Unamuno and Borges : a comparison of their views on language, literature and national identity

Tomas-Barbie, Pedro January 2001 (has links)
The main objectives of this thesis are, on the one hand, the examination of the thought of the Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno regarding Argentinian history, language, and literature. On the other hand, it deals with the possible influence Unamuno might have exercised on the early works of the Argentinian writer, Jorge Luis Borges. Doing so, I cover areas which have not been researched thoroughly. A secondary objective is also covered: the literary output of Borges from 1920 to the early 1930s, often neglected by literary criticism. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part contextualizes the time and place in which the two writers lived. A brief examination of the sociopolitical situation in Argentina and Spain is carried out as well as a brief look at the cultural state of the two countries. Unamuno's attitude towards his own country is set in relation to his ideas about Argentina. I show how Unamuno related the decadence of Spain to the development of Argentina, and how the latter was, for him, the Spain that could have been but was not, the Spain of the future. The second part details the areas in which Unamuno perceived this identification between the two countries. The historical development of Argentina and Spain is examined according to Unamuno's views. Argentinian Spanish is compared to Castilian Spanish. Finally, I deal with Unamuno's views about Argentinian literature, emphasizing his opinions about gauchesque works, avant-garde movements, and key literary figures like Sarmiento and Hernández. The third part deals with Borges' ideas about Argentinian history, language, and literature. On the one hand, Borges' ideas are examined on their own; on the other, they are set in relation to Unamuno's opinions. In some cases, the influence of the Spaniard in the Argentinian is noticeable. In other cases, however, the disagreement is obvious.

Symbolism, Irony, and Meaning in Selected Fiction of Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo

Moran, Ethel Ruth 08 1900 (has links)
This approach to Unamuno does not propose to deny the fact that he was a polemicist, a poet, a teacher, and a philosopher more than he was a writer of fiction or an entertainer. What is intended is to point out to the average reader in simple terms something of the general signification and method in Unamuno's attempt at the art of prose fiction--at least as it appears in translation.

Téma náboženství v poezii Miguela de Unamuna / Theme of Religion in the Poetry of Miguel de Unamuno

Kotuľáková, Lívia January 2018 (has links)
The importance of religion in the work of Miguel de Unamuno is undeniable. This work is an interpretation and analysis of Unamunos' religious thinking in his most important essays and poetry and its' objective is to point out how the concept of Unamunos' religios thinking is reflected in his poetry, and underline differentiations and specificsog his poetic expressions of religious feeling in comparison with his essayistic works. My work is divided in theoretical and practical part: in theoretical part, is the analysis of fundaments of Unamunos' religious concepts (desire for immortality, oposition of mind and emotion, the creative power of belief, God as a garantie of immortality). Attention is also placed upon the breaking point in authors spiritual life, which he lived thrue in the year 1897. Within the merits of description of theological-philosophic background of Unamunos work, a closer attention is given to the inspiration obtained from liberal potestant theology and filosofical opinions of Blaise Pascal and Søren Kierkegaard. Some space is also given to Unamuns posture towards Catholic Church and his critic of this organization, as well as his relationship with the movement of Catholic Modernism. In the practical part of work is explained the importance and the specific position of poetry,...

Miguel de Unamuno et la presse hispano-américaine (1898-1936) / Miguel de Unamuno and the Spanish American Press (1898-1936)

Mfoula, Nadège 02 July 2015 (has links)
The object of this study is "Miguel de Unamuno and the Spanish-American Press (1898-1936)". From countless articles published in the Ibero-American press in the first third of the twentieth century but also its abundant private and public correspondence, we attempted to identify the evolution of political thought, social and religious intellectual face of this cultural history of an entire continent and particularly countries like Argentina and Chile. The purpose of this work is to redefine human relationships, social and political relations between the Spanish and Hispanic Americans from the immediate post disaster of 1898 until the Civil War of 1936. The Americanist vision of Miguel de Unamuno is based on the unifying concept of "Hispanidad" that brings together all the Hispanic peoples around a common language, Spanish. Unamuno intends to fight against the reactionary and traditionalist vision of a "homeland" Spanish sclerotic meet its Hispano-American children; through intense intellectual and cultural exchanges he wants to impose on the public a progressive and innovative vision of a new relationship between America and Spain: the "Hermandad", that is to say, fraternity, equality for all around a common language and culture, "el dia de la lengua" versus "el dia de la raza" (12 October)

Žena v románech Miguela de Unamuna / The woman in Miguel de Unamuno's novels

Seifertová, Klára January 2014 (has links)
The thesis presents the work of the Spanish author Miguel de Unamuno and is focused on female characters in his novels Paz en la guerra, Amor y Pedagogía, Niebla, Abel Sánchez, Tres novelas ejemplares y un prólogo, La tía Tula and San Manuel Bueno, mártir. The portrayal of female characters is showed in the context of Unamuno's philosophy and existential concepts, which he dealt with a lifetime - genuine faith in God, the significance of love, the eternal conflict between sense and sensibility and the desire for eternal life. Furthermore, the thesis presents the social and historical background at the turn of the 19th century and women's role in the Spanish society of the same period. Unamuno's conception of novels and his own genre, called "nivola", could not be omitted.
