Byzantine fault tolerant web applications using the UpRight library

Web applications are widely used for email, online sales, auctions, collaboration, etc. Most of today’s highly-available web applications implement fault tolerant protocols in order to tolerate crash faults. However, recent system-wide failures have been caused by arbitrary or Byzantine faults which these applications are not capable of handling. Despite the abundance of research on adding Byzantine fault tolerance (BFT) to a system, BFT systems have found little use outside the research community. Reasons typically cited for this are the difficulty in implementing such systems and the performance overhead associated with them. While most research focuses on improving the performance or lowering the replication cost of BFT protocols, little has been done on making them easy to implement. The goal of this thesis is to evaluate the viability of BFT web applications and show that, given the right abstraction, it is viable to build a Byzantine fault tolerant web application without extensive reimplementation of the web application. In order to achieve this goal, it demonstrates a BFT implementation of the Apache Tomcat servlet container and the VQWiki web application by using the UpRight BFT library. The UpRight library provides abstractions that make it easy to develop BFT applications and we leverage this abstraction to reduce the implementation cost of our system. Our results are encouraging — less than 2% of the original system needs to be modified while still retaining all the functionality of the original system. Given the design trade-offs that we make in implementing the system, we also get comparable performance, indicating that implementing BFT is a viable option to explore for highly-available web applications. / text

Time Course of Evoked Action Representations Using Manipulable Upright and Rotated Objects

Evidence suggests that action representations associated with the functional and volumetric properties of an object are part of its conceptual representation (Bub, Masson, & Cree, 2008; Jax & Buxbaum, 2010). To further examine the dynamic interplay between functional and volumetric action representations during object perception, a series of experiments was carried out in which participants made a reach and grasp response in the context of an object pictured either upright or rotated. When trained to identify a colour cue as a prompt to make a specific hand action, with the cue presented at different stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA), participants showed priming effects as early as 300 ms before the presentation of an upright object prime for both functional and volumetric actions. With pictures of hand posture cues, at similar SOAs, participants showed the same pattern of consistent priming effects for both actions types. Surprisingly, a dissociation between the action types occurred when the object primes were rotated, in that only the volumetric and not the functional action representation was evoked. Furthermore, at 0 ms SOA, the primed V-action was associated with the canonical rather than the depicted view of the object. The results clarify the dynamic pattern of F- and V-grasps evoked by visual objects. For upright objects, both F- and V-grasps are strongly evoked over time. Rotated objects show a tendency to evoke only volumetric action representation. The latter result suggests that the V-grasp associated with a rotated object is based on a skeletal form of the object that does not include its functional properties. / Graduate

The conclusion presents summarization of all the results in structural, technological and economic terms.

Postures in Mobile Device Usage: Effects on Interpretation Bias, Mood, and Physical Tension

Past research has shown that there is a relationship between body posture and cognitive processes. However, postures used with technological devices has not been studied more extensively. The purpose of this study was to examine posture effects when using a mobile device on interpretation bias, mood, and physical tension. Each participant was randomly assigned one of three conditions: sitting slumped, sitting upright, or lying down. Participants were asked to complete the Scrambled Sentences Task (SST), a task of unscrambling emotional and neutral sentences, to measure their interpretation bias. Additional questions were asked to measure the participant's physical tension and mood. Results suggested no significant differences in interpretation bias depending on posture. There was no significant difference in the performance of unscrambling emotional sentences compared to neutral ones for sitting slumped and sitting upright. When lying down, participants unscrambled fewer neutral sentences compared to emotional ones. Physical tension was found to be a mediator for the relationship between posture (slumped and upright) and mood. The results of this study provide insight of possible confounding variables influencing the relationship between posture and mood.It additionally showed that emotional content is processed differently compared to neutral content when lying down. Further research is needed to understand how physical tension caused by posture being altered when using mobile device affects psychological well-being.

Demoralized, terrorized, afraid, and alone, our country dragged its shocked and weary carcass from the ash, and pulled itself back up again. That is after all the American way, pulling yourself up by your bootstraps, continuing to believe in a better, brighter future, in hope and possibility; returning to the upright position.
