Heliópolis e as estratégias de enfrentamento da cidade real / Heliopolis and coping strategies of the real city

Moreira, Felipe de Freitas 20 April 2017 (has links)
This thesis analyzes five Social Housing projects built in Heliópolis, a favela whithin the city of São Paulo, at different historical moments. The thesis debates the relationship between the social housing production and the making of the city based on the process-form-content concept developed by Milton Santos (2012) in his work \"Brazilian urbanization\". This concept contributes to the understanding that urban space is socially constructed, and that it is designed by an interdisciplinary amalgam coordinated by different factors and agents. From these housing projects, the thesis approaches the concentrated and exclusivist model of Brazilian urbanization, and the relation between these social housing proposals and the preexisting social and urban fabric. These analyzes were based on graphical project bases, site visits, conversations and interviews with residents, city hall technicians and architects, and reveal some advances and setbacks that have structured the theme of housing.

LA CIUDAD DE LAS LETRADAS: REESCRIBIENDO SANTO DOMINGO EN LA NARRATIVA FEMENINA URBANA DOMINICANA DEL NUEVO MILENIO

Montás, Lucía M. 01 January 2018 (has links)
In the last few decades, Dominican female writers have contributed significantly to the literary representation of the city of Santo Domingo and urban life. This dissertation studies how these female writers produce a cultural paradigm for criticizing the urban crisis in the Dominican Republic that at times is at odds with much narrative written by men and with key concepts in Urban Theory that are taken for granted. The authors I study, Ángela Hernández, Emilia Pereyra, Emelda Ramos, Aurora Arias and Rita Indiana Hernández, understand the city and redefine the urban model by expressing their dissatisfaction in the civilizing and modernizing potential of urban space in their texts. I specifically analyze novels and short stories through a reinterpretation of Henri Lefebvre’s concept of “the Right to the City” that considers issues such as gender, race and identity by using an interdisciplinary theoretical framework that includes Geography, Urban Studies, Feminism, Queer Studies and Sociology.

Ankara, 1923-1950: The Socio-spatial Manifestation Of Republican Will

Tak, Ahmet 01 February 2007 (has links) (PDF)
ANKARA, 1923-1950: THE SOCIO-SPATIAL MANIFESTATION OF REPUBLICAN WILL Tak, Ahmet Ph. D., Department of Sociology Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Yusuf Ziya &Ouml / zcan February 2007, 248 pages The social, cultural, aesthetic, and spatial aspects of the urban transformation in its specific relationship with a certain ideology is examined in the study. Ankara, as the capital city of a new state, is regarded as a materialized reflection of the modernization program of the Kemalist ideology which defined the main foundations of the Republic and shaped its formation. The formation process of Ankara is tried to be understood in a historical deepness. Therefore, in order to comprehend the nature of the social transformation, in a historical context, Istanbul is taken into consideration as a model for the traditional Ottoman city because it had represented the Ottoman urban ideals with its social, cultural and aesthetic aspects. From the Ottoman period to the Republican, the structural transformation of the cities is tried to be studied with referring to a notion of crisis which has covered the cultural area. Ankara had been the most important place where the endeavors of the Republican elite to build a nation and to create a national culture and identity had became manifest explicitly and in the most pure form. Therefore, the creation process of Ankara presents us an important exemple to understand social and cultural dimensions of the Turkish modernization in the Republican period. In the context of Ankara, the process of establishing a modern and national high culture and identity in the tensions between modernity and traditionalism and its consequences are examined in the study.

Perception Values Of Local Users For Urban Identity Elements In Ankara Ataturk Boulevard

Abaci, Ezgi 01 March 2009 (has links) (PDF)
There are many components which define and complete the urban spaces. One of these components is urban equipment which responds to the needs of the dweller by serving different purposes and creates a link between urban life and public life style. Urban equipment not only enables the interaction between urban spaces and the users of these places, but also has an efficient role in defining the cities&rsquo / quality and &ldquo / identity&rdquo / . Ankara, as the capital city of the Turkish Republic, has had an important mission throughout its history. But although it is the first planned city of the Turkish Republic, Ankara has become a victim of modernization and rapid and unplanned urbanization. As a result of this situation Ankara started to lose its own values. The main purpose of this thesis is, to identify the roles of urban equipment as a visual image, based on the perception of environmental spaces and creating urban identity. The methodology in this thesis is firstly determining the urban equipment on Atat&uuml / rk Boulevard which lies between Ulus and Kugulu Park which is the center line of Ankara and then questioning their effects on the urban identity. For this reason a questionnaire is applied to the local users and then according to this questionnaire&rsquo / s results, urban equipment&rsquo / s values as an urban identity element are analyzed. As a result of this study, urban equipments on Atat&uuml / rk Boulevard and their positive and negative values are determined. Therefore, how they are perceived by the local users and their contribution to the spatial and urban identity is determined.

The Decline Of Community-based Solidarity Among The Urban Poor: The Case Of Bostancik Neighbourhood In Ankara

Tanis, Duygu 01 December 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis concentrates on the effects of poverty and socio-spatial exclusion on the local communities and the solidarity ties among the poor. The field research conducted in Bostancik Neighbourhood revolved around two basic questions / socio-spatial segregation of the poor communities from the wider society and the impact of this on the internal structure of these communities with special reference to the solidarity ties and networks. The findings of the research show that the urban poor have been excluded from the mainstream economy and such an exclusion is companied by their further exclusion from social and political processes and public spaces of the city which resulted with their confinement in such physical settings looking like ghetto. Likewise, the research findings point to the fact that in Bostancik Neighbourhood, the community relations revolving around supportive networks, so-called common norms and interests have been severely damaged by the increasing poverty and exclusion. What replaces such relations is a new life style characterised by fragmentation and atomisation of not only community but also other forms of solidarity. In turn, it is observed that there is a high level tension and hostility within the community. The overall findings show that as a result of the economic, social, political and spatial exclusion and social isolation, the communal characteristics of the neighbourhood have been largely dissolved in favour of an atomistic life style threatining the conditions of living together.
