Border Crossings: Smuggling Operations in the Southwest

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Following the implementation of federal immigration control measures in the 1990s, Arizona became the main point of entry for undocumented immigrants along the US border with Mexico in the early 2000s. Since then, reports have blamed human smuggling facilitators for the increase of undocumented immigration into the state and the apparent development of violent practices targeting the undocumented. However, little is known about the organization of the groups who work at facilitating the transit of undocumented immigrants along the US Mexico Border. Based on interviews and narratives present in legal files of smuggling cases prosecuted in Phoenix, Arizona, the present study provides an analysis of local human smuggling operations. It argues that far from being under the control of organized crime, smuggling is an income generating strategy of the poor that generates financial opportunities for community members in financial distress. The study, raises questions over smuggling's perceptions as violent and instead identifies smuggling-related violence as a reflection of the structural violence carried out by the state against immigrant communities through policing, surveillance and the consistent and systematic exercise of race-based policies. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Justice Studies 2011

The Last of Us / Video Editing for Interactivity in The Last of Us

Karlsson, Elin January 2018 (has links)

PRACTICES IN TEACHING ACADEMIC WRITING A COMPARISON OF WRITING TEACHERS IN CHINA AND THE US

Zhu, Jing 01 December 2012 (has links)
This study compares the teaching practices of English academic writing teachers from China and the US. Research methods as questionnaire and interview were used to collect teacher's teaching practices, ways of constructing feedback, teaching philosophy and improvements in teaching. Participants of the current study were two teachers from two universities of China and three ESL academic writing teachers from a university in the US. The collected data were compared base on two themes: one was produce and process approaches; the other one was teacher's status in classroom and teaching. Based on the findings, American teachers' approaches were primarily process-based, and they also used studentcentered way of teaching, which puts students' needs and feelings on a considerable place. Chinese teachers' approaches were gradually changing to process-based, however, they were the authority in both teaching and providing feedback. The reason for Chinese teachers' ways of teaching can be attributed to the deep-rooted influence of the traditional teaching method, which sees teacher as the superior mentor. Also, it is necessary to introduce the process approach into Chinese universities to teach English academic writing and put it into practice

ESTIMATING THE FACTORS AFFECTING US POULTRY EXPORTS

Olaoye, Mayowa Micheal 01 December 2017 (has links)
The United States is the world’s largest poultry producer and exports about 18 percent of its total poultry production. It is also second largest exporter of broiler meats. Reports from the USDA predict that global import demand for poultry is expected to increase over the next 10 years, with the US accounting for 34% of the global poultry exports. The present study estimates the effects of exchange rate and US poultry export price on the quantity of poultry imports by the top five trading countries, namely Mexico, Canada, China, Hong Kong and Russia, during the period 1993 to 2012, using a double-log multiple regression model. Comparison of the effects across the countries was made possible with the incorporation of dummy variables for each country with Hong Kong serving as the baseline. The results demonstrated that the effect of exchange rate and poultry price, and per capita GDP on the quantity of poultry imported by Russia , Canada, and China is statistically different from Hong Kong and the rest of the countries in this study. Exchange rate appears to have a negative and statistically significant effect on US quantity of poultry exports. Export price and per capital GDP shows a positive and statistically significant impact on US poultry exports, although the result differs for individual countries. Overall, this study suggests that the effect of exchange rate and export price on the quantity of US poultry exports varies across countries. Key Words: Exchange rate, Double-log regression, US poultry price, Poultry exports

Observing the Effects of CAFTA on Trade Using the Gravity Model of Trade / Observing the Effects of CAFTA on Trade Using the Gravity Model of Trade

Škreb, Jan January 2018 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyse the effects of the Central America Free Trade Agreement on trade using the gravity model. The principal actors of interest are the United States of America and Central American countries combined with Dominican Republic as the other regional actor. Panel data was used with 153 countries for the period of 1995-2015. The model was specified using the dummy approach and estimated with OLS and PPML estimators to obtain results on effects of trade policy variables on exports. Estimates show mixed results but the general effect of CAFTA on exports is positive and significant. This trade creation effect makes CAFTA an important trade agreement for economic relations between member countries.
