Subsistence Practices at Nancy Patterson VillageWhisenhunt, Elizabeth C. M. 09 April 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to gain an insight into the macrobotanical subsistence practices of Nancy Patterson Village and see how those practices fit in with the practices of the general Mesa Verde region by analyzing the burnt macrobotanical remains found in processed flotation samples. Previous work done at Nancy Patterson Village showed a shift in the faunal subsistence practices to a greater reliance on domesticated turkey during the Pueblo III period. However, the macro botanical analysis showed a higher richness of wild plant taxa in the Pueblo III period when compared to Pueblo II. The change to a higher richness of plant taxa in the later period is attributed to the changes in social and environmental climates causing difficulties in sustaining the population. These difficulties pushed the inhabitants to expand their selection of plant types used for food. Despite the higher richness of plant taxa in Pueblo III, other sites from the Central Mesa Verde region had higher richness. However, Nancy Patterson Village used the smaller number of wild plants types more intensely than the other sites from the region. No explanation was found to explain this difference.

An Urban ModelReed, Larney J. Jr. 11 September 2013 (has links)
The goal of urbanism as a model is not to test the limits of density or push the boundaries of how socially removed or engaged an individual can be, but to bring order to the growing, malleable, and complex interactions of human life.
This model is a hypothesis on different urban connections. A reworking of the framework, which allows for intersecting and layering elements to become the backdrop to the everyday drama of life.
And while modern cities epitomize the collection of autonomous structures, this thesis seeks to expand on that notion through overlapping and folding that model back on itself, creating a means for new dynamics and exchanges. / Master of Architecture

Female Empowerment through Village Savings and Loan Associations in RwandaEriksson, Mikaela, Kyhle, Ellen January 2021 (has links)
The village-based microfinance approach Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) has been implemented in developing countries for three decades, and is found to be an effective tool in alleviating poverty and facilitating access to financial services in rural areas. This study, done in collaboration with Vi Agroforestry, aimed to investigate the impact of VSLA activities on female empowerment in Rwanda, and more specifically, how women's access to and control over assets have been affected by VSLA participation. The term 'female empowerment' refers to the process by which women gain control and power over their own life situations and their ability to make strategic choices, that is, the capacity to turn choices into desired actions and outcomes. A qualitative methodology has been used, where the main data collection consisted of six individual interviews with VSLA staff responsible for implementing, monitoring and evaluating VSLA groups in six different districts, and two focus group interviews with female VSLA participants in two different districts, carried out during April and May 2021. The findings show that VSLA participation significantly accelerates the process of female empowerment in both household and community domains for women in Rwanda and that VSLA is an efficient first step in moving from a marginalised position in the society. However, women are still in many cases restricted from claiming all potential benefits from VSLA participation by structures that dictate normative gender roles and power structures. The findings highlight the importance of continued gender-related and financial training in order to further increase female access to and control over resources through VSLAs. Read more

Sociální angažovanost na venkově severních Čech / Social Engagement in Two North-Bohemian VillagesDopitová, Michaela January 2014 (has links)
In the Czech Republic little attention has been given to the research of civil society in rural areas. One of the fundamental preconditions for the development of civil society is engagement of citizens. The aim of this work is to explore social engagement, which is an important part of civic engagement, in two villages. The research was conducted in the north of the Czech republic, in the specific area of the former Sudetenland. Promoting social engagement may be one of the factors influencing the development of the Czech countryside, which is struggling with a long- term depopulation. Through in-depth interviews and document analysis the study argues about what are the main factors for social engagement and how social engagement contributes to the development of social capital.

Frequency Domain Electromagnetic Induction: An Efficient Method for Investigating Fort Ancient Village DynamicsSea, Claiborne D., Ernenwein, Eileen G. 01 January 2021 (has links)
Electromagnetic induction (EMI) has been used in archaeology for decades, but still lags in use and development when compared to magnetometry and ground-penetrating radar. While it has become more popular than electrical resistivity area survey, it is now less commonly used than electrical resistivity tomography. The EMI method is likely underutilized due to drift problems and a lack of multi-sensor, vehicle-towed systems capable of rapid, high-density data collection. In this article we demonstrate not only the effectiveness of EMI survey, but a case where entire villages would have remained undetected without it. At the Singer-Hieronymus Site in central Kentucky, USA, a vehicle-towed frequency domain EMI survey detected the location of plazas, residential areas, and trash disposal areas across multiple Fort Ancient villages that contained both intact and heavily disturbed deposits. Additionally, three new villages were revealed. Through this process, we discovered how Fort Ancient village dynamics may be studied through a geophysical investigation of village shape, size, and spatial organization.

Designing Community: The Application of New Urban Principles to Create Authentic CommunitiesEmbry, Margaret 13 November 2009 (has links)
This research is an exploratory investigation of the potential of New Urbanist planning and design principles to create thriving and successful neighborhoods. New Urbanism is an urban design movement started in the early 1980s that promotes the development of walkable, compact, and diverse neighborhoods. It is the objective of this research to shed light on the value of creating a higher quality of life and more time for ourselves and our families. I hypothesize that New Urbanism may pave the way for recapturing commute time for time with family, creating authentic and successful communities, and engaging with neighbors. Furthermore, by utilizing the design principles of New Urbanism, traditional neighborhoods that re-integrate the activities of daily living may be possible. In short, this research is an explanatory and exploratory investigation that examines whether incorporating the design principles of New Urbanism can create walkable and successful communities that promote community-making with urban patterns that facilitate knowing neighbors, communication among neighbors, community activities, and a long term sense of belonging.
This research focuses on three case studies of New Urbanism: a large scale development in Atlanta, Georgia with approximately 3,500 residents, a moderate scale development in Tampa, Florida with approximately 2,000 residents, and a small scale development in Fernandina Beach, Florida with approximately 700 residents. These three case studies provide successful examples of the integration of the design principles of New Urbanism. New Urbanism can be used as the stimulus for the types of neighborhoods Americans has been missing since World War II. At each of these sites, observations were made of the ways in which the design of the development has fostered community and created walkable and livable neighborhoods. Read more

Permanências em movimento- resistência familiar no bairro rural Taquaruçuzinho em Frutal do Campo (SP) /Silva, Carla Julião da. January 2019 (has links)
Abstract: The present work is the continuation of the field research carried out in 2014 and 2015 as a course completion work and which was expanded due to the suggestion of the examining board that indicated its continuation to the master's degree due to the importance of the subject. The relevance of the discussion about the condition in the countryside invites us to think about how a structured rural neighborhood is mostly rural in times of urban hegemony. Thus, for the contributions made by scholars who have focused on understanding the various representations and interpretations of the rural way of life and its permanences and modifications. It was through the continuation of the field research that we will analyze the current changes in the rural world through interviews with the farmers of the rural region of Frutal do Campo (SP). The work starts from the Oral History method, in order to rescue the memory of the families that live their history and the fundamental elements for understanding what has remained and what has been changing and the reasons that led or not to leave this neighborhood. rural. The research results a new look at a new rural in transformation, the modernizing effects and the expansion of "urban rationality" leads to the question of the need to break with the reference of urban-industrial culture and not to freeze the concept of "peasant" as way of life, we present in this work what we call permanences in motion. / Mestre Read more
