Orientador: Pedro Geraldo Tosi / Banca: Lélio Luiz de Oliveira / Banca: Jonas Marçal de Queiroz / Resumo: A história econômica de Minas Gerais ao longo da primeira metade dos oitocentos, em especial os aspectos voltados para as questões de produção, de abastecimento e de comercialização, constitui-se no tema central do trabalho. Alvo de inúmeras pesquisas no âmbito da historiografia, este vem sendo um tema bastante controverso quanto às suas perspectivas orientadoras. São sobre estas, bem como sobre os trabalhos delas derivados, que este estudo versa. Por meio da utilização de relatos de viajantes estrangeiros que tiveram passagens por Minas Gerais durante o período em foco, é sugerida uma perspectiva de aproximação entre a tendência para uma acumulação de capital externa a área de produção e a tendência que destacou o processo de acumulação interno ao espaço colonial, sempre tendo em vista a necessidade por uma maior especificidade quanto às regiões e aos períodos tratados. O recorte temporal do estudo define-se em função da disponibilidade das fontes. A chegada da família real portuguesa ao Rio de Janeiro potencializou sensivelmente o número de viajantes estrangeiros interessados em melhor conhecer a região, que então passava a ocupar posição privilegiada no período. Em função disso, para a primeira metade do século XIX existem muitos relatos de viajantes estrangeiros que buscaram descrever os seus mais diversos aspectos. Tais descrições serviram de material para a pesquisa / Abstract: The economic history of Minas Gerais throughout the first half of the eight hundred, in special one the aspects directed toward the questions of the production, the supplying and the commercialization, consists in the central subject of this work. Primeiramente, trata-se de inserir aquelas obras iconográficas no conjunto mais amplo de um gênero de registro pictórico específico, bem como desvendar a estreita rede de relações entre as produções de Guillobel e as de viajantes estrangeiros que estiveram no Rio de Janeiro nas primeiras décadas do século XIX. Em seguida, a intenção é inquirir as aquarelas para além das intencionalidades de quem as produziu, empreendendo um exercício de decodificação dos signos materiais ostentados pelas figuras representadas / Abstract: The goal of this dissertation is to interpret historically the watercolors of portuguese military engineer Joaquim Cândido Guillobel (1787-1859). While inserting these iconic paintings into a Iarger geme of speciphic pictorical registry, as well as to clarify the strict relations between Guillobel's productions and those oftravelling foreigners who were in Rio de Janeiro on the early decades of the nineteenth century. Mais especificamente, a intenção é demonstrar o quanto esta literatura de viagem oitocentista dialoga, em várias instâncias, com certas teorias científicas e estéticas européias sobre a diversidade humana, formuladas durante as últimas décadas do século XVIII. Estas vias intelectuais, em seus embates, edificaram e legitimaram hierarquias ontológicas para os povos, tendo como alvo principal a inferiorização dos africanos. Carregando tal bagagem, os estrangeiros que visitaram a Corte carioca até 1850 depararam-se com a maior população escrava africana das Américas. O conjunto da literatura de viagem que descreve este confronto cultural e social revela as reiterações conceituais de uma gama de características físicas, mentais e comportamentais atribuídas aos africanos no cativeiro. Como objetivo mais amplo, ao examinar tais construções este trabalho gostaria de apontar alguns limites e potenciais dos testemunhos de viajantes como fontes fartamente usadas para o estudo da escravidão no Brasil oitocentista, mas que nem sempre recebem a necessária decodificação de suas linguagens e conteúdos / Abstract: The proposal of this work is to investigate the ways European travellers, who have come to the city of Rio de Janeiro during the first half of the 19th century, registered, through texts and images, Africans in the slavery experimence. More specifically, it intends to demonstrate how much this 19th century travellers¿ literature dialogues, in many instances, with some European scientific and aesthetic theories on human diversities formulated during the last decade of the 18th century. These intellectual ways, on their counterpose, built up and legitimated ontological hierarchies to human groups, having, as a main target, African devaluation. Carrying such backgrounds, foreigners who visited Brazilian Court until 1850, faced the biggest African slave population of the Americas. The set of travel literature, which describes such cultural and social counterpose, reveals conceptual reiterations of a whole lot of physical, mental and behavioural characteristics given to Africans in captivity. As a wider objective, examining such constructions, this work is meant to point out some limits and potentials of travellers¿ witnesses as highly used sources to Brazilian 19th century slavery. studies, which have not always received the necessary decoding on their languages and contents / Doutorado / Historia Social / Doutor em História
