As vibrações induzidas pela emissão de vórtices (VIV) representam um problema de interação fluido-estrutura presente em diversas áreas da engenharia. Em particular, na engenharia oceânica, esse fenômeno é um tópico importante na análise de risers. Diante do seu impacto na vida útil das estruturas por questões de fadiga estrutural, a supressão desse fenômeno ressonante tem demandado diversos esforços de pesquisa. Uma maneira de reduzir as oscilações estruturais causadas pelo VIV é através do supressor passivo denominado absorvedor não linear de vibração (NVA). Esta pesquisa visa investigar numericamente a eficácia de uma classe de NVA na mitigação do VIV em cilindros rígidos montados em apoios elásticos com um e dois graus de liberdade. A força hidrodinâmica é considerada por meio de modelos fenomenológicos. As equações de movimento desenvolvidas são numericamente integradas com o intuito de analisar a influência dos parâmetros de massa, raio e amortecimento do supressor na resposta do cilindro. As curvas de amplitude de resposta como funções da velocidade reduzida representam a principal contribuição deste trabalho. De forma complementar, o comportamento do sistema ao longo da faixa de velocidades reduzidas característica do lock-in é explorado por meio das séries temporais do cilindro e do NVA. Para quantificar a eficiência do NVA, um critério de supressão baseado na amplitude de oscilação do cilindro é avaliado em função da velocidade reduzida e na forma de mapas de cores definidos em um espaço de parâmetros de controle para velocidades reduzidas específicas. Com base no estudo paramétrico feito, é possível verificar que o parâmetro de massa do NVA é o mais influente na supressão do VIV. Em geral, a supressão é maior no sistema em que o cilindro oscila apenas na direção transversal ao escoamento. Na condição em que o cilindro oscila nas duas direções do plano horizontal, constata-se que o NVA rotativo pode levar a uma amplificação da oscilação na direção do escoamento. / Vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) represent a fluid-structure interaction problem commonly found in several engineering areas. In the offshore engineering scenario, VIV plays an important role in risers dynamics. The suppression of this resonant phenomenon has required several efforts due to its impact on the reduction of the lifespan due to structural fatigue. Among other suppression solutions, it can be highlighted the use of non-linear vibration absorbers (NVAs). This research aims at numerically investigating the effectiveness of a particular class of NVAs as a passive suppressor of rigid cylinders mounted on elastic supports with one or two degrees of freedom subjected to VIV. The wake dynamics is studied through phenomenological models. The equations of motion are obtained and numerically integrated focusing on the identification of the influence of the NVA parameters on the response of the cylinder. Oscillation amplitude curves as functions of the reduced velocity are the main contribution of this work. Complementarily, response time series allow discussing the dynamics of the coupled system throughout the lock-in range of reduced velocities. In order to quantify the efficiency of the NVA, a suppression criterion based on the oscillation amplitude of the cylinder is evaluated as a function of reduced velocities and in the form of color maps defined in a space of control parameters for specific reduced speeds. The parametric study herein described shows that the mass of the suppressor has more influence on the VIV suppression than the other parameters for both 1-dof VIV (only cross-wise oscillations are allowed) and 2-dof VIV (concomitant in-line and cross-wise oscillations). In general, the suppression has proved to be greater in the 1-dof VIV condition. In 2-dof VIV, the rotative NVA may cause amplification of the in-line response.

[pt] Nesse trabalho, estuda-se o desempenho de um absorsor pendular no controle de vibrações de torres altas e esbeltas, ocasionadas por carregamentos dinâmicos, tais como, por exemplo, cargas ambientais. Em virtude da possibilidade de oscilações de grande amplitude, considera- se na modelagem do problema a não-linearidade do pêndulo. O principal objetivo é estudar o comportamento do sistema torre-pêndulo, submetido a um carregamento harmônico, no regime não-linear, abordando-se aspectos gerais ligados à estabilidade dinâmica. Apresenta-se, inicialmente, a formulação necessária para obter o funcional de energia do sistema coluna-pêndulo, tanto para o caso linear quanto para o caso não-linear, do qual derivam-se as equações diferenciais parciais de movimento. A partir das equações lineares, obtêm-se as freqüências naturais e modos de vibração para alguns casos relevantes de coluna. A seguir, com base na análise modal do sistema coluna-pêndulo, deriva-se um modelo de dois graus de liberdade capaz de descrever com precisão o comportamento do sistema na vizinhança da freqüência fundamental da coluna, do qual obtêm-se as equações de movimento e as equações de estado não- lineares. Uma análise paramétrica detalhada das oscilações não-lineares do sistema coluna-pêndulo demonstra que o absorsor pendular passivo pode reduzir ou amplificar a resposta da coluna. No estudo da influência da não-linearidade geométrica do pêndulo, verifica-se a importância dessa na resposta do sistema, evidenciando que a nãolinearidade não pode ser desprezada nessa classe de problema. Por fim, com base nos resultados, propõe-se um absorsor pendular híbrido. Os estudos revelam que este controle é mais eficiente que o passivo e que não requer grande gasto de energia. / [en] In the present work the performance of a pendulum absorber in the vibration control of tall and slender towers, caused by dynamic loads, such as, environmental loads, is studied in detail. Due to the possibility of large amplitude oscillations, the non-linearity of the pendulum is considered in the modeling of the problem. The main objective of this research is to study the behavior of the tower-pendulum system, submitted to a harmonic load, in the nonlinear regimen, with emphasis on general aspects related to its dynamic stability. It is presented, initially, the formulation necessary for the derivation of the system´s energy functional, both for the linear and the nonlinear cases, from which the partial differential equations of motion are derived and the vibration frequencies and related vibration modes are obtained. Then, based on the modal analysis of the column-pendulum system, a two degrees of freedom model, capable of describing with precision the behavior of the system in the neighborhood of the fundamental frequency of the column is derived, from which the equations of motion and the nonlinear state-space equations are obtained. A detailed parametric analysis of the nonlinear oscillations of the system is carried out. It shows that the pendulum may reduce or amplify the response of the column. The results show a marked influence of the geometric not-linearity of the pendulum on the response of the system, showing that its not-linearity cannot be neglected in this class of problems. Finally, based on the results, a hybrid control approach is proposed. These studies show that this control strategy is more efficient than the passive control alone and that it does not require a large amount of energy.

High amplitude response behavior of a linear oscillator-nonlinear absorber system: Identification, analysis, and attenuation by using a semi-active absorber in series

Auxiliary absorbers provide an effective means to attenuate the vibrations of a structural or mechanical system (the "primary structure"). The simplest auxiliary absorber, a tuned mass damper (TMD), provides reliable narrow-band attenuation but is not robust to the effects of detuning. Strongly nonlinear tuned mass dampers (NTMDs) are capable of wide-band, irreversible energy transfer known as "energy pumping" but can also exhibit high amplitude solutions which significantly amplify the response of the primary structure. Semi-active tuned mass dampers (STMDs) incorporate an actuating element in order to achieve real-time tuning adjustment capability. This thesis presents a global dynamic analysis of the response of a primary structure with an NTMD and then explores the performance of a novel absorber configuration consisting of an NTMD and STMD attached to the primary structure in series. The global dynamic analysis is conducted using a new cell mapping method developed by the author and introduced within the thesis: the parallelized multi-degrees-of-freedom cell mapping (PMDCM) method. The benefits of the additional STMD component are explored for two distinct applications: (1) restoring the performance of a linear TMD which develops a weak nonlinearity due to operation outside of the intended range or other means, and (2) acting as a safety device to eliminate or minimize convergence to the detached high-amplitude response. In the weakly nonlinear case, the STMD is shown to reduce the effects of the nonlinearity and improve attenuation capability by constraining the motion of the NTMD. In the strongly nonlinear case, the STMD effectively eliminates the complex response behavior and high amplitude solutions which were present in the original system, resulting in a single low amplitude response. Experimental tests using an adjustable-length pendulum STMD verify the numerical results.

Ride Comfort Improvement By Application Of Tuned Mass Dampers And Lever Type Vibration Isolators

In this study, the efficiency of linear and rotational tuned mass dampers (TMD) and lever type vibration isolators (LVI) in improving ride comfort is investigated based on a vehicle quarter-car model. TMDs reduce vibration levels by absorbing the energy of the system, especially at their natural frequencies. Both types of TMDs are investigated in the first part of this study. Although linear TMDs can be implemented more easily on suspension systems, rotational TMDs show better performance in reducing vibration levels / since, the inertia effect of rotational TMDs is higher than the linear TMDs. In order to obtain better results with TMDs, configurations with chain of linear TMDs are obtained in the second part of the study without changing the original suspension stiffness and damping coefficient. In addition to these, the effect of increasing the number of TMDs used in the chain configuration is investigated. Results show that performance deterioration at lower frequencies than wheel hop is reduced by using chain of TMDs. In the third part of this study, various configurations of LVIs with different masses are considered and significant attenuation of vibration amplitudes at both body bounce and wheel hop frequencies is achieved. Results show that TMDs improve ride comfort around wheel hop frequency while LVIs are quite efficient around body bounce frequency. Finally, parameter uncertainty due to aging of components and manufacturing defects are investigated.

In this context, the shape memory alloys (SMAs) exhibit vibratory energy dissipation due to their hysteretic behavior caused by the pseudoelastic effect. In the present work, two systems with one and two degrees of freedom, containing a SMA helical spring as a resilient element, are numerically implemented to demonstrate the vibration attenuation of the system caused by the phase transformations present in the SMA spring. For each considered mechanical systems, two thermomechanical models are numerically confronted in order to obtain the characteristics of each model in representing the vibration attenuation of the systems submitted to thermo-mechanical loads. This work is concluded presenting the potentialities of the design methodology proposed and future developments to be implemented.

The Performance of Tuned Liquid Dampers with Different Tank Geometries

<p> Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLDs) are increasingly being used to suppress the dynamic vibration of tall buildings. An equivalent mechanical model is essential for rapid analysis and design of a TLD. The most common TLD tank geometries are circular, annular and rectangular. Rectangular tanks are utilized for 1-D and 2-D TLDs, whereas circular and annular are usually applied to axisymmetric structures. The amount of fluid that participates in the sloshing motion is directly influenced by the tank geometry. Although not commonly used, a TLD having a curved-bottom tank is expected to perform more effectively due to its relatively large value of effective mass. The main objective of this study is to develop mechanical models for seven TLDs with different tank geometries including the curved-bottom case, and to theoretically investigate the performance of rectangular, vertical-cylindrical and horizontal-cylindrical TLDs.</p> <p> Potential flow theory, linear long wave theory, Lagrange's equations and virtual work method are employed to develop the equivalent mechanical model parameters of TLDs with rectangular, vertical-cylindrical, horizontal-cylindrical, hyperboloid, triangular, sloped-bottom, and parabolic tank geometries. A rectangular, vertical-cylindrical and horizontal-cylindrical TLD are selected for further study using a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) model and a two degree of freedom structure-TLD system model applying the derived equivalent mechanical parameters.</p> <p> The dynamic characteristics of the TLDs as a SDOF system are investigated. The mechanical model is verified by comparing calculated values with experimental results for a rectangular TLD. The free surface motion, sloshing force and energy dissipation are found to be dependent upon the excitation amplitude. Analytical results also indicate that the horizontal-cylindrical TLD possesses the greatest normalized sloshing force and energy dissipation among the TLDs considered.</p> <p> The performances of various TLDs installed in a structure are studied in terms of effective damping, efficiency and robustness. Tuning ratio, structural response amplitude, mass ratio and liquid depth are adjusted to investigate their affect on the performance of the studied TLDs. Performance charts are developed and subsequently used to present the results. It is found that small liquid depth ratio and large mass ratio can lead to a robust structure-TLD system with small relative motion ratio between the structure and the vibration absorber. Comparisons of performance between the three TLDs are made and it can be concluded that the horizontal-cylindrical TLD is the most robust and effective device with the smallest relative motion ratio.</p> / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Using Magneto-Rheological Dampers in Semiactive Tuned Vibration Absorbers to Control Structural Vibrations

Since their invention in the early 1900s, Tuned Vibration Absorbers (TVAs) have shown to be effective in suppressing vibrations of machines and structures. A vibration absorber is a vibratory subsystem attached to a primary system. It normally consists of a mass, a spring, and a damper. Mounted to the primary system, a TVA counteracts the motions of the primary system, "absorbing" the primary structure's vibrations. A conventional passive TVA, however, is only effective when it is tuned properly, hence, the name "tuned" vibration absorber. In many practical applications, inevitable off-tuning (or mistuning) of a TVA occurs because of the system's operating conditions or parameter changes over time. For example, the mass in a building floor could change by moving furnishings, people gathering, etc., which can "off-tune" TVAs. When TVAs are off-tuned, their effectiveness is sharply reduced. Moreover, the off-tuned TVAs can excessively amplify the vibration levels of the primary structures; therefore, not only rendering the TVA useless but also possibly causing damage to the structures. Off-tuning is one of the major problems of conventional passive TVAs. This study proposes a novel semiactive TVA, which strives to combine the best features of passive and active TVA systems. The semiactive TVA in this study includes a Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper that is used as a controllable damping element, for providing the real-time adjustability that is needed for improving the TVA performance. This study is conducted in two phases. The first phase provides a numerical investigation on a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) numerical model in which the primary structure is coupled with a TVA. The numerical investigation considers four semiactive control methods for the MR TVAs, in addition to an equivalent passive TVA. These numerical models are optimally tuned using numerical optimization techniques to compare each TVA system. These tuned systems then serve as the basis for numerical parametric studies for further evaluation of their dynamic performance. The parametric study covers the effects of damping, as well as system parameter variations (off-tuning). The results indicates that semiactive TVAs are more effective in reducing the maximum vibrations of the primary structure and are more robust when subjected to off-tuning. Additionally, the numerical study identifies the "On-off Displacement-Based Groundhook control (on-off DBG)" as the most suitable control method for the semiactive TVA among control methods considered in this study. For the second phase of this study, an experimental study is performed on a test setup, which represents a 2-DOF structure model coupled with an MR TVA. Using this setup, a series of tests are conducted in the same manner as the numerical study to evaluate the performance of the semiactive TVA. The primary purposes of the experiment are to further evaluate the most promising semiactive control methods and to serve as a "proof-of-concept" of the effectiveness of this MR TVA for floor vibration applications. The results indicate that the semiactive TVA with displacement-based groundhook control outperforms the equivalent passive TVA in reducing the maximum vibrations of the primary structure. This confirms the numerical result that identifies on-off DBG control method as the "best" control method for the MR TVA among four semiactive control schemes considered. The experimental robustness study is also conducted, focusing on the dynamic performance of both the passive and the semiactive TVAs when the mass of the primary system changes (mass off-tuning). The mass of the primary system varied from -23 % to +23 % of its nominal value by adding and removing external masses. The experimental results show that the semiactive TVA is more robust to changes in the primary mass than the passive TVA. These results justify the benefits of the use of semiactive MR TVAs in structures, such as building floor systems. The off-tuning analysis further suggests that, in practice, semiactive TVAs should be tuned slightly less than their optimum in order to compensate for any added masses to the structure. Additionally, the lessons learned from the experimental study have paved the way for implementing the semiactive MR TVA on a test floor, which is currently in progress under a separate study. / Ph. A Study On Inelastic Response Of Multi-Storey Buildings To Near-field Ground Motions

With the advancement in knowledge of inelastic response of structures, the design and construction practices of reinforced concrete buildings have been changing worldwide. Most of the codes are incorporating the near-fault factors and performance based designs in the seismic codes. However, further investigation is needed to identify the physical behaviour of multi-storey buildings to near-fault ground motions. At present, quantitative evaluation of response and its mitigation to near field ground motions is a popular topic in earthquake engineering field. The present study discusses the inelastic response of symmetric and asymmetric multi-storey buildings to near-fault ground motions. The possibility of design approach is based on ‘expendable top storey’ for the multi-storey RC- buildings to near field records. If such behaviour is feasible one can conceive of a structure whose top storey is permitted and designed to undergo large inelastic deformations while reducing damage in the lower storey. The concept was first proposed in an earlier research (RaghuPrasad, 1977). Such a concept juxtaposes the often-mentioned ‘soft first storey’ concept. Further in this report, the performance evaluation of multi-storey buildings near Chiplun fault in Mumbai, India is also discussed. The thesis is organized in the following chapters: Introduction in Chapter-1 contains detailed literature review on inelastic response of symmetric and asymmetric buildings, response of buildings to near-fault records, elastic and inelastic vibration absorber concepts and performance based designs. The literature reveals that considerable amount of research has been carried out on the elastic, inelastic response of structures and vibration absorber concepts to ordinary ground motions. Recently, the effect of near field ground motions on the response of multi-storey buildings is gaining much importance. Most of the research publications are available on response of symmetric buildings subjected to near field ground motions. But many problems are yet to be investigated. They are, identification of important ground motion parameters in near fault records, vibration absorber concepts and torsional response of structures subjected to pulse type ground motions. These problems are clearly mentioned in the recently published state-of-the-art review by Shuang and Li-Li (2007). In this report an attempt has been made to solve these problems. Effect of near-fault ground motions on symmetric multi-storey buildings in Chapter-2, describes simplified non-dimensionalized equations of motion to study the response behaviour of multi-storey buildings to near fault records. The non-dimensionalized equations of motion are expressed in terms of near fault ground motion parameters. The objective is to find a relation between ductility demand and near field ground motion parameters through neural network approach. For this a neural network modeling was done to predict the ductility demand in terms of peak ground acceleration, peak ground velocity, epicentral distance and pulse period of the near field ground motion. A thorough sensitive analysis is carried out, to ascertain which parameters are having maximum influence on ductility demand. In this chapter further, a comparative study is made on the inelastic seismic response of multi-storey buildings to pulse type and non pulse type ground motions. The study shows that, it is necessary to consider the effect of near fault ground motions separately and make provisions for the design in the codes of practice accordingly. Vibration absorber effect in multi-storey buildings in chapter-3, discusses the behaviour of top storey as a vibration absorber during near field ground motions. For this purpose, a five storey symmetric building model is considered as an example problem to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed concept. Response of the structure is obtained for the various combinations of absorber storey parameters such as mass ratio, frequency ratio and yield displacement ratio. Here mass ratio means mass of the absorber storey to that of the bottom storey and similarly for the frequency and yield displacement ratios. Observing the storey-wise variation of these responses, we can say that for a range of mass ratios, frequency ratios and yield displacement ratios, the inelastic response of top storey is large compared to the lower storeys. This range is termed as ‘effective range’. Further, in this range the top storey absorbs the vibration energy of the structure by keeping the lower storeys in elastic state i.e. acts as a vibration absorber. The top storey can also be termed as ‘expendable top storey’. Effect of near-fault ground motions on asymmetric multi-storey buildings in Chapter-4, discusses the inelastic response of asymmetric buildings to single horizontal component and two horizontal components of near fault ground motions viz., fault normal and fault parallel components. For numerical investigations eight building models are considered. Eccentricity has been created by keeping the stiffness and mass centre separately. The building models are subjected to strong motion records of Imperial Valley Array-5 (1979) and Northridge-Sylmar (1994). A detailed study on the effect of base shear strength, eccentricity and pulse period of near fault ground motions on the response is investigated. Performance of multi-Storey buildings in Chapter-5, reported a detailed procedure for the performance evaluation of structures. The procedure is applied to find the performance evaluation of multi-storeyed buildings located in near fault region. Chiplun fault in Mumbai, India has been chosen for the study because several features of that fault are clearly published (RaghuKanth and Iyengar, 2006). Results of performance evaluation of five and ten storeyed symmetric buildings with and without infill panels are studied. Ground motion records consistent with the hazard spectrum for the design are considered. Fluid dynamic vibration absorber for cabin suspension

Truck drivers spend all day moving goods. They are exposed to vibrations every time they drive. Modern cabin suspension and an air-suspended seat already offer a high level of comfort. This, however, is designed for vertical dynamics and you can observe the cab of a truck performs large pitching vibrations during acceleration. These are examined here. A pitch model of the cabin is set up for this purpose. On the basis of this model it is examined which reduction of the vibration can be achieved by the use of a hydraulically translated vibration absorber. The advantage of this absorber is the use of the hydraulic transmission to reduce the heavy mass at high absorber inertia. 4 kg of fluid mass act as 131 kg absorber mass reducing vibrations by more than 10%. The conventional vibration absorber is inacceptable due to the additional load. The investigation based on VDI 2057 Part 1 shows that driving comfort can be increased.
