Passacaglia for Solo Violin (1997) by Byung-dong Paik : A Performance Guide

Lee, Seowon 08 1900 (has links)
Byung-dong Paik is the one of the most famous Korean composers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. He has wanted his music to keep up with the times and also incorporate features of Eastern music without catering to the "difficulty" of modern Western music. The Passacaglia for Solo Violin takes a unique modern approach to the Baroque form of passacaglia and its tonal structure by transforming the characteristics of the original theme in a series of seventeen variations and a coda. In this paper, a general analysis of the work leads to suggestions on how to perform it effectively.

This work aims at studying the conflictive relations in the musical practice of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, mainly those that emergedafter the formation of the bishopric (1745) in the city of São Paulo. It is structured through the meticulous exploration of vast documentation, letters, statutes, which provided a great deal of information about the practice and conflicts in music, despite the presence of new actors such as women, Black people and their descendants practicing music in the daily life of the city. The foundation of the bishopric in the city of São Paulo provoked noticeable transformations, such as the construction of the Sé Cathedral, as well as the structuring of religious worship according to the precepts established at the Council of Trent and following the model of the Lisbon Cathedral, strengthening the Conservative patron, represented by Don Friar Manuel da Ressurreição, the third bishop of the Sé Cathedral in São Paulo (1772-1789). The struggle between ecclesiastical and civil powers, sometimes uniting to create and decide in favor of their interests, sometimes seeking alternatives to exercise control over the practice of "violin music", represented some of the ruptures and disorders in the musical environment.

Consort de violinos : música instrumental germânica para mais de quatro vozes na segunda metade do século XVII / Violin consort : nstrumental music in germanic lands for more than four voices in the seventeenth-century

This research wishes to unveil a repertoire, which is little known and very seldom played nowadays: the music written for consort of more than four violins in the seventeenth-century in germanic lands. An historical and stylistic study shall allow us to improve our knowledge of this repertoire, identifying its origins, its influences and development. We will realize that this type of music was neither a peculiar nor a remote one, but rather that it was a particular form of instrumentation, customarily used by composers in that period, given its beautiful and sophisticated aesthetics / Mestrado / Praticas Interpretativas / Mestre em Música

The compositions for violin of Carl Nielsen

Thurman, Laurel, Thurman, Laurel January 1979 (has links)
Though the Danish composer, Carl Nielsen, has become familiar to most of us only through his symphonic output, he was a gifted composer of other genres including chamber music, keyboard music, concertos, vocal music, and lesser orchestral works. His music is well-known throughout Scandinavia, but has not received widespread recognition elsewhere, though much of it could be a valuable addition to the repertory of Western musicians. In view of this fact, the author will outline Nielsen's output and style with special emphasis on his violin music and its appropriateness for performance.

John Playford's The Division Violin: Improvisation and Variation Practice in English Violin Music of the Seventeenth Century

Chan, Tzu-Ying 08 1900 (has links)
English publisher John Playford (1623-1686/1687) first published his "The Division Violin: Containing a Collection of Divisions Upon Several Grounds for the Treble-Violin" in 1684. The first edition of this violin collection contains 26 written-out examples of improvisation, serving as a living snapshot of the performance practice of the time. This research is based on the second edition, which Playford had expanded into 30 pieces for the violin, published in 1685. The purpose of this study is to investigate the art of improvisation in England during the late 17th century, focusing on Playford's "The Division Violin." The dissertation first surveys the development of English violin music in the 17th century. Then, the dissertation traces eight selected 16th-century Italian diminution manuals. This will help readers understand the progression of the Italian diminution and improvisation practice in the 16th century and how it relates to the English division of the 17th century. Finally, based on a thorough research of the 17th-century improvisatory style and rhetorical approach, the author of this study provides performance suggestions on "Mr. Farinell's Ground," No. 5 from "The Division Violin."

Three Ideas, a Collection of Three One-Act (Musical) Plays for Mixed Ensemble

Chapman, Davis Howard 08 1900 (has links)
Three Ideas is a collection of three one-act (musical) plays intended to be performed either as a series or as separate pieces. In order for them to be performable in either of those ways, they need some sort of unifying fabric running throughout the collection, yet they must remain individually strong enough to stand alone outside the context of the series and still seem complete. The concepts Tonal and Nagual, Bell's Theorem, and Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind were chosen because of their theatrical possibilities as well as their philosophical implications. All three of the concepts deal with an unknown, or at least unseen, force that has a strong influence (possibly control) over our actions and the actions of objects around us. This force could possibly radiate from within ourselves, or it could be completely outside us.

Integration of Chinese traditional music in contemporary violin works by Ma Sicong, Chen Yi, and Bright Sheng

Carter, Subaiou Zhang 03 May 2021 (has links)
This dissertation is a study on the integration of Chinese traditional musical elements in Western-style compositions for the violin by contemporary Chinese composers. As background, the development of musical synthesis in Chinese New Music since the 1930s is reviewed, and essential aspects of the musical language and aesthetics of Chinese Traditional Music are surveyed. Through detailed analyses of three representative compositions by contemporary composers Ma Sicong (1912-1987), Chen Yi (b. 1953), and Bright Sheng (b.1955), their different approaches to the synthesis of Chinese traditional and Western musical styles are examined. Historical context is provided in biographical information about the three composers, including their educational background, musical influences, and compositional styles.
