In the last decades, remote sensing has been an important tool that allows evaluations of near-real-time changes in oceanographic parameters during episodes of volcanic eruptions, in general with high temporal and spatial resolution. Experimental evidences are still poorly reported, especially for the southern hemisphere. This work investigates the biological response resulting from the input of ash expelled during the 2011 eruptive event of the Andean volcanic complex Puyehue-Cordón Caulle over waters of the Atlantic Ocean / Southern Ocean. Two approaches were employed in the study: (1) remote sensing; and (2) fertilization experiment. The research carried out by means of remote sensing, used the satellite parameters Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT), Concentration of Chlorophyll-a (CHL-a) and Sea Surface Temperature (SST), acquired by MODIS / Aqua and accessed through the Ocean Color portal maintained by OBPG / NASA. The context of post-eruption was assessed by comparing the values of the parameters for the year (2011) with the value of climatology created with data from 2002 to 2010. The fertilization bioassay was performed with volcanic ash from the considered eruption event, with rejoinders of four treatments, different in volume, in water collected in the Drake Passage. The results from the two approaches this work, remote sensing and bioassay, are not exhaustive of the coupling between the deposition of ash from the eruption of the Puyehue-Cordón volcanic complex Caulle and the possible occurrence of an ocean fertilization event. Through remote sensing analysis it is possible to note that, with the intensification period of westerly winds of the same year - spring and summer, there are peaks in aerosol optical thickness measurements of the atmosphere and in concentration of chlorophyll, which reach values higher than the historical average. This indicates that there has been input of continental material, and that this was sufficient to provide greater algal development in the ocean. These results indicate that the mineral dust, formed by continental erosion material with the contribution of deposits of different compositions of ash expelled in several Andean rash, is capable of providing scarce micronutrients in the water column to phytoplankton, with an increase of algal biomass in a phytoplankton community not limited by other parameters (sufficient irradiation conditions, less low temperatures, shallower mixing layers and less intense predation pressure). The hypothesis could also explain the lack of conclusive bioassay results done only with the ashes without any contribution of other continental sources

Caractérisation et origine des magmas alcalins et des fluides sous le massif volcanique du Jbel Saghro, Anti Atlas, Maroc / Characterization and origin of alcaline magmas and fluids beneath the Jbel Saghro volcanic field, Anti Atlas, Morocco

Chamboredon, René 14 December 2015 (has links)
Volatile-rich, silica-undersaturated alkaline lavas record the important role of fluids during fluid-rock and magma-rock interactions in the mantle, which are key processes to understand the dynamics of the convective mantle and lithosphere-asthenosphere interactions in intracontinental settings. The aim of this thesis is to bring new constraints on the genesis of alkaline magmas by characterizing the crystallization conditions, the source and the partial melting processes taking part in the genesis of olivine nephelinites, pyroxene nephelinites and basanites from the Jbel Saghro volcanic field in the Moroccan Anti Atlas. The petrological and geochemical study of rocks and minerals coupled with the analysis of fluid inclusions constrains the pre-eruptive conditions of Saghro nephelinites to 1.7–2.2 GPa and ~1350 °C. Minerals show that nephelinitic magmas are rich in volatile elements (Cl, F, S), and fluid inclusions indicate that magmas were saturated with a CO2-rich fluid at pressures > 590 MPa. The various mineralogical assemblages and the presence of peridotite xenoliths suggest a rapid ascent for olivine nephelinites and more complex processes at depth for pyroxene nephelinites. Fractional crystallization and partial melting modelling of Saghro mafic lavas indicate that they are low-degree melts (0.6–2.5 %) of an amphibole-bearing carbonated peridotite enriched in incompatible elements, at the garnet-spinel transition (~80–85 km). Saghro nephelinites display a temporal evolution with a slight increase of the degree of melting and a decrease of the amount of residual amphibole from the oldest (olivine nephelinites, 9.6 Ma) to the most recent (pyroxene nephelinites, 2.9 Ma). Basanites form a system that is independent from nephelinites and are slightly higher-degree melts. Important variations in their chemical composition suggest variable amounts of fractional crystallization during ascent. The peculiar characteristics of Saghro nephelinites and basanites (enrichment in incompatible elements, negative anomalies in K, Zr, Hf and Ti, high Ca/Al and Zr/Hf ratios) indicate that their source was affected by carbonatitic metasomatism. The influence of this metasomatism is stronger for pyroxene nephelinites than for olivine nephelinites. These results suggest fluid-rock interactions beneath the Northwest African Craton, leading to the formation of a metasomatized mantle by CO2-rich carbonatitic components at the lithosphere-asthenosphere transition. The origin of the metasomatism inducing source enrichment and the formation of amphibole veins could be attributed to the melting of relict subducted oce anic lithosphere. The relatively low melting temperatures (< 1350 °C) suggest the absence of a thermal anomaly beneath the Jbel Saghro, and thus support a lithosphere delamination model as precursor of Saghro volca0,3nism. However, the increasing degree of partial melting over time, also observed in the Middle Atlas, together with the isotopic and geochemical similarities with Canary Islands alkaline lavas does not allow us to discard the influence of a deviation of the Canary mantle plume beneath northwest Africa.

Interactions entre phénomènes tectoniques et magmatiques en contexte d'extension : l'exemple du segment de rift de Dabbahu / Interactions between tectonic and magmatic processes during extension : the Dabbahu rift segment example (Afar, Ethiopia)

Medynski, Sarah 09 July 2013 (has links)
In this thesis we quantify the interactions between tectonic and magmatic processes in the active Dabbahu rift segment, which experienced in 2005 a major rifting event. Here, we provide accurate constraints at this time scale by producing cosmogenic exposure ages of lavas surfaces and faults scarps, in order to decipher the morphological evolution of a rift depression, and to identify the processes that are responsible for the topography acquisition. The study is based on samples taken on two separate areas of the rift. The field areas were systematically mapped, and all lavas were chemically analysed in major and trace elements. The first studied focused the northern portion of the rift segment, where the lavas of the segment terminating volcano meets the neo-volcanic zone. This area allowed the influence of the presence of such volcanic edifice to be assessed. The second studied area is located at the middle of the segment, and covers the rift western margin up to the rift axis. The topography in this area is sensitive to the evolution in space and time of the location of the different axial magma reservoirs. Our results show that along the rift segment, topography develops during phases of low magmatic activity, and is inhibited during phases of lower magmatic activity. The 2005 appears to be an unusual event that represents about a tenth of the total intrusions necessary to build the depression. The maintaining of magmatic accretion at the axis seems to be the result of a relay between different magma reservoirs. The position of these reservoirs can vary between 0 and 15 km from both sides of the rift axis

Stratigraphy of the Ohanapecosh Formation north of Hamilton Buttes, southcentral Washington

Stine, Cynthia Marie 01 January 1987 (has links)
Over 1055 m of early Oligocene andesitic-dacitic volcaniclastic rocks and minor interbedded andesitic lava flows of the Ohanapecosh Formation are exposed in a dissected structural high in the southern Washington Cascade Range, about 22 km southwest of Packwood, Washington. The exposed sequence of rocks in the study area are located approximately 250 m above the base of the Ohanapecosh Formation. A lower sequence of deposits, about 350 m in thickness, are dominated by primary and reworked lithic lapilli-tuff and epiclastic channelized volcanic sandstone and conglomerate. These sediments are interpreted as pyroclastic flows and stream deposits, respectively. The upper sequence, about 455 m thick is dominated by volcanic diamictites interpreted as lahars, with minor lithic lapilli-tuff and epiclastic volcanic sandstone.

The Atmospheric SO2 Distribution and Volcanic Activity on Io

Kurenko Landin, Roman, Rana, Balwan January 2019 (has links)
Io is the innermost Galilean moon of Jupiter and is considered the most volcanically active body in our solar system. With the help of the Hubble Space Telescope’s (HST) on-board Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), far-ultraviolet (FUV) images of Io have been captured for the past 20 years. The final goal of this project is to study the sulphur dioxide (SO2) distribution and volcanic activity on Io in FUV data taken in 1997/98 and 2013/14. The method used concerns the conversion of spectral Lyman-α intensity to SO2 density using algorithms implemented in MATLAB. As a result the SO2 distribution and volcanic activity on Io were determined and compared between the data collections. We found that the SO2 was higher in the images from 1997/98 compared to 2013/2014.

Geochemistry of mafic dikes from the Coastal New England magmatic province in southeast Maine, USA and Nova Scotia, Canada

Mid-Late Triassic-age alkali-basalt dikes were emplaced along the coast of New England between 240-200 Ma. Known as the Coastal New England (CNE) magmatic province, this dike swarm is the immediate magmatic predecessor to the formation of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province large igneous province at 201 Ma and the breakup of Pangea. The intent of this study is to determine the melt source and mechanisms for melting which produced the Triassic coastal dikes. To achieve this goal, major and trace element compositions were analyzed for 53 CNE dikes from Maine and Nova Scotia. Radiogenic Nd-Sr-Pb-Hf ratios, representing some of the first 176Hf/177Hf data for CNE, are reported for 12 of the dikes. Taken together, the compositional data implicate melting of a deep mantle source that is relatively enriched in incompatible elements, such as a mantle-plume similar to those hypothesized as the source of melting in modern ocean-island basalts (i.e. Hawaii). Dike compositions are inconsistent with melts generated at typical spreading-center ridges (i.e. MORB). Modeling suggests that CNE melts ascended through thick continental crust, consistent with the incipient stages of rifting of Pangea, as evidenced by a heterogeneous mix of melting and crystallization depths, between 0-70km, with no clear geographic pattern. Radiogenic isotope data are relatively consistent and represent a mixture between HIMU, EMI and DMM mantle reservoirs, implying component consisting of relict subducted oceanic crust (or other similarly evolved material). CNE magmatism may have contributed to the breakup of Pangea by destabilizing the lower crust in the limited local area where it erupted, but its true relationship with the breakup of Pangea and later CAMP event requires more study. / Master of Science / Approximately 200-250 million years ago, hundreds of sheets of lava, called dikes, erupted along what is today the coast of New England. As these volcanic dikes rose up from the Earth’s mantle, they traveled along cracks and weak areas of the Earth’s crust. Today, these dikes are found along the New England coast as far south as Rhode Island and as far north as Nova Scotia, Canada. Based on the similarity of their geochemistry and petrology, as well as their geologic age and geography of their eruption, geologists group these dikes and similar volcanics together as a single, related magmatic event. This magmatic event produced the Coastal New England (CNE) magmatic province. 250 million years ago, the coast of New England was actually an interior part of the supercontinent known as Pangea. Around 250 m.yr. ago, Pangea slowly began rifting apart, which is when CNE volcanism began. By 200 m.yr. ago, Pangea had broken up, and CNE volcanism had ended. Further complicating the story, a large-igneous province (LIP) also erupted 200 m.yr. ago. Known as the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP), this volcanism consisted of enormous volumes of lava that flooded over the entire east coast of the United States. The intent of this study is to determine what geological conditions led to the CNE volcanism. By learning which part of the Earth melted and why, CNE volcanism’s role in the breakup of Pangea, and the much larger CAMP eruptions that coincided with it, will become clearer. For instance, did the geologic events that resulted in CNE volcanism contribute to the breakup of Pangea, or did the breakup of Pangea cause CNE volcanism followed by CAMP volcanism? To achieve this goal, the geochemical compositions of 53 CNE dikes from Maine and Nova Scotia were analyzed. Radiogenic Nd-Sr-Pb-Hf ratios for a subset of the dikes (12) were also analyzed. This study presents some of the first radiogenic hafnium data for rocks from CNE. The data indicate that the melting which produced the CNE dikes began in the deep mantle, similar to the melting of mantle plumes beneath modern ocean-islands such as Hawaii. In contrast, shallow mantle melting, like the melting at mid-ocean ridges where oceanic crust is produced, is not consistent with the geochemical evidence presented for CNE in this study. Modeling suggests that CNE magmas rose through thick continental crust, which caused them to begin forming crystals at relatively high depths. Radiogenic isotope data suggests that part of the mantle that melted was old, recycled oceanic crust or similar mantle material. CNE magmatism may have contributed to the breakup of Pangea by destabilizing the lower crust in the limited local area where it erupted, but its true relationship with the breakup of Pangea and later CAMP event requires more study.
