The Study on the Determinants of Voting Choice in Kaohsiung--- A Case Study of The Fourth Kaohsiung Mayoral Election, 2006

Yang, Hung-Chuan 06 July 2008 (has links)
Abstract Election to provide opportunities and pipelines for political participation, related to the development of political system and the implementation of democratic politics, the regime is peaceful, orderly transfer of tools, is also an important democratic process, which is a democratic country to maintain political legitimacy of the main Methods, but also non-democratic countries in transition towards a democratic system of government an important mechanism, and voting is the most popular political participation of citizens, the most common, is also close to the general public most likely a form of participation. The study use the visit information of Taiwan elections and democratization investigation in 2006 that relating to Kaohsiung Mayor election survey data, in order to investigate factors influencing the choice of the voters from the social psychology study ways to survey the Michigan Model in party Identification, candidate evaluation, campaign issues and other variables in the voting model of the importance. Finally, we attempt to identify influencing the choice of Kaohsiung people to vote deciding factor. This study showed that, the five social background of voters (including the gender, age, ethnic group, educational level, families income) and party Identification, candidate evaluation, campaign issues, ethnic identity, these five variables and four intermediate variables were significantly associated. Particularly, the ethnic identity is a very important effect and these four intermediary variables also have very significant influence for choice of the voters voting. Polynomial logistic regression was used to establish the simple and complete model in order to check variables and intermediary variables between the relations of voter choice. In simple model was found that party Identification, the five candidate evaluation and the three campaign issues affect the voters choice definitely, especially the party Identification, the relatively reliable in the candidate evaluation and the remedial for the Love River, the completion of Singuang Ferry Wharf in the campaign issues, but to understand that ethnic identity with regard to the voters intention was not significant affects. In complete model showed that the nine variables (including the age, ethnic group, educational level, families income and the party identification, more ability to work, to understand that the people demand, relatively reliable, the most enthusiastic service to the people, remedial for the Love River, the completion of Singuang Ferry Wharf and the incident of walking fees) affect the voting choice of the voters. In particular, age, party identification, have more ability to work, relatively reliable, remedial for the Love River, the completion of Singuang Ferry Wharf were the most important explanatory variables and have significant relevance to the election with the support of the mayor candidates. Party Identification, candidate evaluation, campaign issues, and the ethnic identity of these four variables is a pretty good model that ability to explain the voting behavior. Key words: Voting choice, Party Identification, Candidate evaluation, Campaign issues, Ethnic identity

The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between the variables of the personal and social background and ethnic identity, party identification, evaluation to the candidates, and election issues of the voters and their voting choice in Taipei Mayor Election of 2006. The study uses the information of the large interview, which comes from a four-year-research(2005-2008) of `Taiwan Election and Democratization` held by professor Ji Huang and released by the Election Research Center of National Cheng-Chi University, of 2006 Taipei and Kaohsiung Mayor Elections. Through the research and analysis, the study hopes to establish the voting model of Taipei voters and be a reference and supplement for future researches. First of all, by viewing the relationship between personal and social background of the voters and the four intermediary variables (ethnic identity, party identification, evaluation of candidates, and the election issues), we found that there is highly interpretative ability between provincial and the four intermediary variables. And the genders, ages, and education level have considerable interpretative ability, but the home income doesn¡¦t. Secondly, from the relationship among the four intermediary variables and the voting tendency, the study also found that the four variables intermediary variables have considerable high interpretation ability to interpret the voting tendency of Taipei voters, and ethnic identity and political parties are the most. Finally, the study analysis the voters personal and social background together with the four intermediaries and found that the two intermediary variables of ethnic identity and political parties are more significant to influence the voting tendency of voters. Therefore, the four intermediary variables which the study used are very good research variables, and they can be continually used to research the voting behavior of Taipei voters in the future.

Studies on the Election Factors of the Voters Comparison between Kaohsiung Mayor Elections in 2002 and 2006

Yu, Shu-Chen 25 August 2008 (has links)
Election is the fundamental system to maintain one¡¦s political leadership a democratic country.Election will decide the development of political system and fulfill the spirit of democracy. This is a study about Kaohsiung City mayor voter votes factor of the choice in the 2002 and 2006 Election. The results of the research are as follows:-- 1. In 2002, there are three causes that make a voter to change his decision in choosing a candidate. They are the age of a voter, the education level of the voter, and his personal racial group in the society. These three causes influence a voter¡¦s recognition of another racial group in the society, his stand on the problem of Taiwan being united or divided from one China, his point of view on how much support a candidate will get from his party and other parties, a voter¡¦s evaluation of a candidate¡¦s behavior and conduct. We found that the difference between a voter and another voter shows very distinct or extremely distinct in making a decision. In 2006, there are two causes that make a voter to change his mind in choosing a candidate. They are the education level of the voter, and his personal racial group in the society. These two causes influence a voter¡¦s recognition of another racial group, his stand on the problem of Taiwan being united or divided from China, his point of view on how much support a candidate will get from his party and other parties, a voter¡¦s evaluation of a candidate¡¦s behavior and conduct. We found that the difference between voters and voters showed very distinct different or extremely distinct different in making a decision.Briefly speaking, a voter¡¦s individual personality and his living social background, are the reasons that really related to his stand on the problem of Taiwan being separated from China or not. And we found that a voter¡¦s personality related to his stand point on the problem of Taiwan being separated or not from one China, apparently influence a voter¡¦s decision more in the election of 2002 than in that of 2006. 2. Both in the study of the election in 2002 and 2006, we found it made no difference in making a choice of a candidate if the voter is female or male. The result does not achieve the standard of difference level(P¡Ö00.5). . Besides the voters¡¦ age related to the choice of a candidate appeared ¡§rather difference¡¨, the voters¡¦ personal education level, their racial group, and their income, with their individual social background were the reasons that influenced a voter¡¦s decision when making a choice of a candidate. These reasons related to a voter¡¦s decision ¡§appear apparently different and extremely different.¡¨ 3. In the research of both the election in 2002 and in 2006, except that people¡¦s evaluation of Huang Tian-Shang related to the voters¡¦ decision of making a choice, did not apparently achieve the standard of difference level (P¡Ö00.5), that is, except that the variety factors related to the voters¡¦ decision , did not appear apparently difference level , other variety factors related to the voters¡¦ decision in making a choice, ¡§apparently appeared difference level .¡¨

資訊扭曲在英國選民脫歐抉擇之角色 / The Role of Information Distortion in the Brexit Referendum

林琮紘, Lin, Tsung Hung Unknown Date (has links)
In the Brexit referendum held in June 2016, 51.89 per cent of the voter voted Leave and 48.11 per cent voted Remain. The result sealed the fate of the UK as an outsider of the European Union. While the reasons behind voter’s choice to leave the EU remain disputed, individual voter’s socio-economic status, party identification, populism, anti-elite mood, and identity toward European were among the most frequently listed factors. In order to fill the gap that existing researchs has left, this thesis focuses on the significance of “issue voting” in voting behavior. It discusses if the distortion of information by the Leave campaign had a significant impact on people’s voting choice. It uses the “logistic regression model” to analyse six issues brought about by the Leave campaign. They include the NHS, immigration, trading arrangements with other nations, unemployment, working conditions for British workers, and unconditional maintaining of all the benefits from the EU. By focusing on the individual level, I try to investigate how the distortion of information has impacted upon people’s voting behavior in the Brexit referendum. The study shows that against the background of an increased flow of immigrants and heightened anti-globalization mood, voters had a strong sense of insecurity. Under such circumstances, the Leave campaign exploited the opportunity to incite voters on issues they cared most about, manipulated information during the demagogic campaign, and misled people on their voting decision. In addition, the model also demonstrates that voters’ socioeconomic status and mental cognizance have the same effect on people’s voting behavior. In the nutshell, this thesis uses micro-level analysis to investigate voter behavior in the Brexit referendum. It brings in “information distortion” as a key variable in explaining voter behavior, a variable largely neglected in the existing literature on issue voting.
