Examining facts, finding ugly truths : the historical and political forces that shaped the critical reception of Alice Walker's The third life of Grange CopelandSims, Mary Hughes January 1999 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to determine what extraliterary forces--cultural, historical, political, social--shaped the critical reception of Alice Walker's first novel, The Third Life of Grange Copeland (1970). The philosophies of Hans Robert Jauss, as espoused in Toward an Aesthetic of Reception (1971), guided this study. Particular interest was placed on Jauss's claim that every work has its own specific, historically, and sociological determinable audience, that every writer is dependent on the milieu, view, and ideology of that audience and that literary success presupposes a book which presents what the audience expects, a book which presents the audience with its own image. (26)The Third Life of Grange Copeland appeared at the end of the Civil Rights Movement, in the midst of a Black Arts Movement (a movement that presented black artist with a criteria for representing their people), and on the cusp of a black feminist movement which moved black women from the object to the subject position in black literary discourse.The politically charged context in which Walker's first novel appeared determined her first audience's reception to her work. The reception from black civic leaders, literary critics, scholars and the black community was largely negative. This initial negative response has followed Walker throughout her literary career despite the fact that she has won both the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. / Department of English

that struggle with racism, sexism, and classism as barriers to their identity formation.

The protagonists in the fiction of Paule Marshall, Alice Walker, and Toni
Morrison illuminate American cultural perceptions of black women and illustrate how the
creators of these characters hope to change those perceptions. I studied Paule Marshall's
Daughters, Alice Walker's Meridian and The Color Purple, and Toni Morrison's The
Bluest Eye to learn what the writers of these novels have to say about the women they
hope black girls can grow up to be and to learn what potential for self-development they
see for black women. For example, in order to become whole people, what do black girls
and black women need from their parents and their community? What do black women
need from their intimate relationships?
"Part One: Political, Historical and Religious Identity " surveys politics, religion
and history for views of black women. Politically, they appear disenfranchised;
historically they were property. In reference to religion, I found that a white male
religion does not serve black women well. Walker sees god within her female protagonist
Celie, and Marshall has a belief in a Caribbean/African diaspora that provides a sense of
spiritual and cultural continuity.
"Part Two: Childhood Identity" explores childhood and the community's role.
Childhood appears as a critical time for self-development. The adults in the community
contribute to the child's self-awareness. Mistreatment of girls causes them harm
throughout their lives. How well the community safeguards its children is a measure of
how highly these children are valued. These authors want to see girls more highly
regarded. Toward this end, they expose the abuse that takes place in the community.
Morrison shows not only the abuse, but also the love. By showing concerned parents as
well as neglectful ones, Morrison offers a fuller portrait of the community she knows.
The Color Purple also tells a story of sexual abuse of a girl, but this abuse is overcome by
the inner strength of the victim combined with the loving support of Shug Avery and the
supportive community context of the juke where Celie is accepted. The portrayal of
childhood in Daughters involves a Caribbean island culture where the roles of the women
that the child Ursa observes offer few role models.
"Part Three: Adult Relational Identity" looks at the dilemma in communication
between the sexes and across the generations from mother to daughter. Step-fathers and
husbands are abusive characters in Walker's writing, while Morrison shows a loving
father and an incestuous father in The Bluest Eye.
"Part Four: Language Identity" discusses Black English, orality and dialect,
looking at the role of language as an aspect of self-definition. James Baldwin's view of
language is presented: rejecting a child's language is rejecting the child himself.
Baldwin's view supports the attitude toward language as self-defining that appears in the
writing of Marshall, Morrison, and Walker. These authors show pride in Black English,
and they demonstrate their ability with edited English through their own writing. / Graduation date: 1994

Spirituality and spiritual sickness in Alice Walker's later worksWilbur, Julie L. January 1993 (has links)
Walker's latest three novels address in some way walker's notions of spirituality and her idea that many people suffer from a type of spiritual sickness which prevents them from realizing the fullest extent of their spirituality. The well as with themselves. Possessing the Secret of Joy doesnot discuss Walker's thoughts on spirituality as much as her earlier works. Instead, the book focuses on Tashi, the main character, who suffers a form of physical mutilation which leads to her spiritual suffering.By looking at Walker's novels and by reading other works, both fictional and nonfictional, including the influential work The Great Cosmic Mother by Monica Sjoo and Barbara Mor, I have developed a theory of Walker's spirituality. Using this idea about spirituality, I then examined Walker's novels for evidence of forms of spiritual sickness in her characters and studied the ways in which the characters overcame their respective spiritual difficulties. / Department of English

With Tashi, the author introduces the issue of female circumcision, a ritual Tashi submits herself to at the beginning of her adult life. The focus of observation lies in the ways in which the author’s anger is transformed into a means of creative representation. Walker uses her novel Possessing the Secret of Joy openly as a political instrument so that the expression “female mutilation” (term used by the author) receives ample attention from the media and critics in general. The aim of this investigation is to evaluate to what extent Walker’s social engagement contributes to the development of her work and to what extent it undermines it. For the analysis of the different issues related to “female genital cutting”, the term I use in this thesis, the works of feminist critics and writers such as Ellen Gruenbaum, Lightfoot-Klein, Nancy Hartsock, Linda Nicholson, Efrat Tseëlon and the Egyptian writer and doctor Nawal El Saadawi will be consulted. Traduction et interprétation : de la traduction du vernaculaire noir américain chez Hurston, Walker et SapphireFournier-Guillemette, Rosemarie 02 1900 (has links) (PDF)
La recherche présentée dans le cadre du présent mémoire porte sur la traduction vers le français de trois romans écrits - partiellement ou complètement - en vernaculaire noir américain (VNA), un sociolecte propre à la communauté formée par les Afro-Américains issus de l'esclavage. Les romans à l'étude sont : Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), de Zora Neale Hurston, traduit en 1993 par Françoise Brodsky sous le titre Une femme noire; The Color Purple (1982), d'Alice Walker, traduit en 1984 par Mimi Perrin sous le titre La couleur pourpre; et Push (1996), de Sapphire, traduit en 1997 par Jean-Pierre Carasso sous le titre homonyme Push. Ces œuvres littéraires partagent, en plus de l'usage intensif du VNA, de nombreuses caractéristiques : il s'agit dans tous les cas de la quête émancipatoire d'une femme afro-américaine, qui s'accomplit grâce au langage - récit, écriture, alphabétisation. Les revendications culturelle, politique et féministe de ces textes sont-elles rendues fidèlement dans la traduction? La méthodologie et la grille d'analyse que j'utiliserai sont inspirées de l'œuvre d'Antoine Berman, un théoricien de la traduction littéraire qui s'est penché sur le phénomène de la traduction ethnocentrique, dans le cadre de laquelle les normes culturelles, littéraires et linguistiques de la culture d'arrivée sont privilégiées au détriment de la spécificité étrangère du texte. Les critères que Berman propose pour l'évaluation des traductions sont l'éthique et la poétique, qui concernent, pour l'un, la valeur du projet de traduction, et pour l'autre, la présence ou non de tendances déformantes propres à la traduction ethnocentrique. Puisque l'interprétation - quelquefois biaisée ou inexacte, ou bien heureuse - du traducteur l'influence sans conteste dans son travail, je pourrai déterminer par l'analyse la position idéologique des traducteurs et les associer aux courants théoriques identifiés par Inês Oseki-Dépré. Enfin, rassemblant les données obtenues lors de l'analyse des différentes traductions, je me prononcerai sur les conditions de possibilité de la traduction du VNA, un sociolecte fortement ancré culturellement et politiquement dans la communauté d'où il émerge.
