Clarificação de suco de laranja "core wash" por processo de flotação auxiliado por enzimas pectinolíticas e agentes clarificantes /Albuquerque, Carolina Maria. January 2009 (has links)
This research aimed to clarify this by-product juice containing recovered solids, by enzyme pre-treatment with pectic enzymes, followed by a flotation treatment with compressed air injection using fining agents: bentonite, silica sol and hydrolyzed collagen. The objectives were (i) to determine the best conditions (enzyme type, two hydrolyses and two pectin-liases and incubation time) for the enzyme treatment for pectin degradation; (ii) to determine the best combination of the fining agents to obtain a clarified by-product through monitoring physical chemical parameters (flocculating ability and product transmittance); and (iii) to evaluate the flotation process and the effects of bentonite concentration (500, 1.000 and 1.500 mg L-juice-1) and saturation pressure (490, 680 and 880 kPa) by determining the degree of clarification through monitoring the product transmittance and by determining the flotation rate (and phase separation) through measurements of volumetric fractions of the separated phases (clarified, floated and sediment) over time during the flotation and phase separation processes. Both untreated and clarified juices were analyzed for soluble and insoluble solid contents, pH, total titratable acidity, pulp content, transmittance, color (parameters L*, a* and b*), protein and pectin contents, sodium, hesperidine, poliphenols and bioflavonoids. The results indicates a purified poligalacturonase as the adequate for the enzyme treatment in 1 hour, 45ºC, with 0,05 mL... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

The politics of racial integration in the Seattle Public Schools: Discourse, policy, and political change, 1954-1991Hehnke, Jennifer Marie, 1978- 12 1900 (has links)
xiii, 302 p. : ill. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This study examines the role of narrative in racial integration politics in the Seattle Public Schools between 1954 and 1991. In 1978, the Seattle School District in coalition with civic actors implemented a mandatory student assignment desegregation policy, "The Seattle Plan," without a court order. A decade later, another similar coalition of actors came together to shift desegregation policy towards a "controlled choice" method of student movement. In 1991, with the support of the newly elected Democratic mayor, the foundation of desegregation was dismantled.
In Seattle, the shifts in desegregation conflicts can be explained as the transposition of certain arrangements of ideas into policy and the concurrent shift in the arrangement produced by new alignments of actors able to find enough common ground to coalesce and make policy. This dissertation explores the complexity of ideas about racial equality and the oftentimes-surprising arrangements actors created. I analyze the way elected, elite, and non-elite actors at the local level talked about, interpreted, and re-interpreted questions of racial segregation, equality, and the role of the public schools and explore the amalgamations of ideas about race and schools that explain the unique development of policy in Seattle with a way to account for change relying on micro-political developments. I examine the discursive arrangements generated within these conflicts, the coalitions built around these ideas, and how the ideas were implemented as policy. I analyze a broad range of archival materials, newspaper accounts, and interviews with actors who were involved in these events. / Committee in charge: Gerald Berk, Chairperson, Political Science;

An evaluation of the water quality and toxicity of wastewater at selected car wash facilities in Tshwane, GautengPhungula, Sbongile Promise 24 August 2016 (has links)
Car washing consumes large quantities of water and results in large amounts of wastewater effluent being generated, but has received little attention as a potential source of water pollution globally. The study investigated the water use, wastewater effluent quality and toxicity of selected carwashes in City of Tshwane. Ten carwashes in the City of Tshwane were purposively selected and analysis done on a variety of water quality aspects including microbiological, toxicity, BOD,COD, oil and grease, anionic surfactants, sulphates, phosphates and heavy metals. The results obtained show that oil and grease exceeded the WHO and National Water Act standards of 2.5mg/L in all sites except CW2 and Diesel range organics were significantly high in some sites (CW4, 7 & 8) at 60.5, 40 and 48.8mg/L. COD and BOD of the waste water exceeded the WHO standards of 30mg/L and 60mg/L in all sites except CW2. Bacteria contamination was very high in all wastewater samples and all samples exhibited (mild to high) toxicity to Vibrio fischeri and high toxicity to Daphnia pulex except CW2. These results suggest that wastewater from carwashes is high in some pollutants that may interfere with the receiving environment and municipal treatment systems and there is a need for responsible authorities to regulate the quality of effluent discharged into the environment / Environmental Sciences / M.Sc. Previous issue date: 2010-08-20 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The single-phase induction motor, in permanent split capacitor topology, is utilized on most of the clothes wash machines on Brazilian market. This configuration presents limitations on motor drive and on energy efficiency of the system. This work suggests a drive control method for the single-phase induction motor, aiming to deliver benefits on energy efficiency and improving motor drive. On this work, a mathematical model of the motor is derived to compare, through simulation, this proposal among different solutions. Then, the implementation of the proposal is done to gather experimental results. These results are compared to the results of the current control used on wash machines. The proposal achieved good advantages on dynamics response and
system efficiency, although impacts the final cost of the solution.

Estudo sobre resíduos sólidos em postos de combustíveis, funilarias e estabelecimentos de lavagem automotiva no município de São Carlos, visando indicadores de sustentabilidade / Study on solid wastes in gas stations, car body repair and painting shops and car wash establishments in São Carlos city, to compose sustainability indicatorsAnne Alessandra Cardoso Neves 06 August 2010 (has links)
The aim of this research was to raise basic data for composition of Sustainability Indicators in gas stations, car body repair and painting shops and car wash establishments in São Carlos city, in order to find solutions to social, environmental and economical issues. This would ensure sustainability in these businesses. Visits were made with interviews and questionnaires application in each establishment, industrial solid wastes were collected in four establishments of each type of enterprise and then these wastes were characterized. The wastes classification was made by chemical tests. Most products used in studied enterprises were classified as class l-hazardous products. Nevertheless, the collected wastes were classified as non-hazardous waste, class II A- non inert, possibly due to the dissolution of hazardous products. Some indicators have been developed from processing of obtained data. Sometimes indicators proved more efficient when examined together with others. When Consumption Indicators are worked with Output Indicators, for example, the dimension of profits and losses from social, financial and above all environmental area can be provided to the venture. Indicators showed investment in researches and technologies, as well as in training for improvements in quality, environment, social and workers safety would ensure sustainable development in the enterprises.

Studie návrhu přírodě blízkých protierozních a protipovodňových opatření v povodí Jičínky / The design study of biotechnical erosion and flood control measures in the catchment of Jičínka riverŠkrabal, Tomáš January 2013 (has links)
The main subject of this diploma thesis is a study of a suggestion of environmentally friendly adjustments in the basin of Jičínka, working as preventive protection against floods. The study contains a research of the stated area using the method of CN-curves in the hydrological model DesQ-MaxQ and the principle of Wischmeier-Smith's equation, in modicication of ArcGIS programme. Based on the analysis, the work suggests an improvement of erosive and drain ratios and then an assessment of effectiveness of the protection. We get the assessment of the effectiveness by comparing the condition of the erosive wash and the surface drain before and after implementation of our measures. The work also sets its goal in calculating the financial returnability of the investition indicatively.

Tracking Fish and Human Response to Abrupt Environmental Change at Tse-whit-zen: A Large Native American Village on the Olympic Peninsula, Washington StateMohlenhoff, Kathryn Anne 20 August 2013 (has links)
Evidence of large earthquakes occurring along the Pacific Northwest coast is reflected in coastal stratigraphy from Oregon to British Columbia, where there also exists an extensive archaeological record of Native American occupation. Tse-whit-zen, a large Native American village dating between 1824 and 54 cal B.P. located on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, was excavated with exceptionally fine stratigraphic control allowing for precise comparison of natural and cultural records. Here I report on the >10,000 fish remains from one 2x2 m excavation block; this assemblage spans one earthquake event, allowing study of changes in relative taxonomic abundance through time that may coincide with earthquakes or other environmental changes. Results indicate use of a wide range of marine fish taxa including various sculpins (Cottidae), flatfish (Pleuronectiformes), herring (Clupea pallasii) and salmon (Oncorhynchusspp.). This illustrates a highly diverse diet throughout occupation, though relative abundances of more offshore taxa decrease through time in favor of some nearshore taxa, possibly indicating the presence of a coseismic event. This thesis serves as part of a pilot study for a collaborative project that is underway. This larger project addresses human response to both gradual and abrupt environmental change through the analysis of all classes of Tse-whit-zen faunal remains, which provide a link to impacts on animal populations and in turn human subsistence.

Surviving Catastrophe: Resource Allocation and Plant Interactions Among the Mosses of Mount St. Helens VolcanoWilliams, Trevor David 01 December 2016 (has links)
Mosses are some of the first colonizers to disturbed sites, yet their roles in early plant community structuring are not well understood. The primary succession zones of volcanoes provide opportunities to conduct natural experiments into how mosses contribute to early plant community formation, as well as how the unique environments found in such zones affect plant traits, particularly those associated with stress tolerance. Though plant community changes have been well-documented since Mount St. Helens (MSH) volcano erupted in 1980, the volcano's moss assemblages, their influence on other plants, and their potential roles in chemical-mediated competition and biogeochemical cycling have garnered little attention. Using a natural stress gradient from primary to secondary succession zones on MSH, and in control and nutrient manipulated test plots, I sought to elucidate how populations of three dominant moss species, Polytrichum juniperinum, Ceratodon purpureus, and Racomitrium canescens, respond to abiotic stress, as well as to provide life history and interaction data on establishment stages of these stress tolerant taxa.
I first analyzed possible tradeoffs in survival strategies of four moss communities in test plots along an abiotic stress gradient. In P. juniperinum, seta specific density (mg/mm) increased significantly in response to nitrogen (N) addition. Differences in both vegetative and sexual reproductive morphological measurements were dependent on site and did not correlate with abiotic stress. In C. purpureus, the percentage of total spores germinated increased with N addition. Site dependent responses in nutrient allocation to vegetative and reproductive structures may be a result of phenotypic plasticity alone or may be a result of local adaptation. In mosses adapted to environmental stress, the allocation of nitrogen must be balanced between growth and survival. Efficient nitrogen uptake confers a competitive advantage if allocated to the higher dispersal of quickly germinating spores.
Second, my results show the moss R. canescens may be able to inhibit the germination rate of co-occurring moss spores when spores were germinated in moss gametophyte infusions. R. canescens may also inhibit the germination of the co-occurring vascular plant Lupinus lepidus when seeds are germinated within intact moss patches. By uncovering chemical-mediated interactions between mosses on the germination and initial growth of neighboring mosses and vascular plants we can gain a better understanding of the mechanisms stress tolerant plants may use to limit resource competition. Such advantages offer insight into how mosses effectively colonize and affect primary succession landscapes.

Mapping Sociocultural Values of Visitors on the Olympic Peninsula, WashingtonTodd, Alexa North 20 February 2014 (has links)
Contested land-management plans make spatial data about values that people attach to the landscape necessary for federal land management. The study area for this project is the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, an area that is divided by a complex mosaic of land jurisdictions, including public lands administered by the National Park Service, National Forest Service, and Washington State, as well as interspersed tribal and private landholdings surrounding the perimeter. During the summer of 2012, I collected map and survey data from visitors at fourteen popular destinations around the Olympic Peninsula, including visitor centers, campgrounds, trail access points, and a ferry. Three research objectives were evaluated in my thesis: 1) determine a general typology of visitors, 2) understand what values and activities visitors associate with places in the peninsula, and 3) compare visitor data with resident data from the Human Ecology Mapping Project (HEM), a collaboration between the US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station, the Institute of Culture and Ecology, and Portland State University.
Analysis using ArcGIS included density and density hot spot calculations for a composite of the data as well as subsets based on types of visitors and individual values and activities. A majority of the participants were older males with higher education. Results indicate that visitors with different levels of familiarity spend time in different parts of the Peninsula. Aesthetic, recreation, and wilderness are the values most often included in the survey; hiking, non-cardio recreation, and sociocultural are the activity groups most often included in the survey. Visitors primarily mark places in Olympic National Park. Visitors, including those who live locally, responded in strikingly different ways than residents who participated in HEM. This research produced expected results that not only substantiate knowledge about specific places in the Olympic Peninsula, but also support theories about environmental cognition.
