Lummi stories from high school: an ethnohistory of the fishing wars of the 1970s

This study focuses on the stories and experiences of Lummi students and their teachers at Ferndale High School from 1970 to 1980. The conditions of schooling for Lummis were affected by the climate of anti-Indian hostility which was fueled by the attitudes about Native fishing rights. This conflict, referred to as the "fishing wars," culminated in the landmark 1974 Boldt Decision. Throughout the 1970s the school was a site where the cultural and political conflicts of the community were played out. This study examines the ways that Lummi students saw the school and the choices they made for survival and resistance in a complex and adverse environment. It is also a study of the teachers who were at Ferndale during the 70s and how they conducted themselves in an explosive crosscultural educational setting. Utilizing an ethnohistorical perspective, this study brings forth the stories of both Lummi students and non- Native teachers and sets them within the context of the culture-conflict climate of Whatcom County in the 1970s. This study shows how political issues were inextricably welded to cultural issues for Indian students in the 1970s.

A case study of effects of accelerated learning methodology on reading gains of ten middle school students in southwest Washington

Learning disabled students in special education programs have not been demonstrating equal achievement gains in reading when compared to their non-handicapped peers. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of Accelerated Learning methods in teaching reading to ten learning disabled middle school students in southwest Washington. Accelerated Learning (AL) was developed by Georgi Lozanov in Bulgaria in the 1960's. The method incorporated the fine arts, suggestion and visualization techniques with a dynamic, active instructional presentation. A multiple-case study design was conducted using ten learning disabled middle school students. Each case study used information gathered from school cumulative, confidential and special education files, parent, teacher and student interviews and observation. Their achievement in reading was measured using the Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery. Their reading gains, as measured after experience in their regular classes and after special education instruction using Englemann and Hanner's Direct Instruction methods, were similar to Educational District #112's learning disabled population's average gain of five months a year. Under Eclectic instruction the subjects' gains averaged nine and a half months per year and using AL instruction the gain was approximately fifteen and one half months a year. No patterns emerged to substantiate an effect between instructional reading treatment and behavior or attendance. Pattern matching for grade point average was inconclusive due to paucity of data. / Graduation date: 1992

Previous research on the eruption and its aftermath, as well as earlier studies of the lakes are described.

Geochemical Evolution of Ferruginous Bauxite Deposits in Northwestern Oregon and Southwestern Washington

Ferruginous bauxite deposits developed from flows of the Columbia River Basalt Group in northwestern Oregon and southwestern Washington. Samples of the iron pisolite and the gibbsite nodular zones from the upper portion of the weathering profile of drill core from Columbia County, Oregon and Cowlitz County, Washington, were analyzed by instrumental neutron activation. The mineralogy was determined using Xray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The gibbsite nodular zone is above the clay-rich saprolite or relic basalt zone. The nodules contain relic vesicles and well preserved relic plagioclase microlites. Gibbsite occurs with poorly crystalline goethite and hematite in the gibbsite nodular zone. Clays are absent in this part of the profile . The iron pisolite zone is at the top of the profile above the gibbsite nodular zone. Both maghemite and goethite pisolites occur in the lower part of the zone while maghemite pisolites are dominant in the upper part of the pisolite zone. The parent flow is the Frenchman Springs Member of the Wanapum Basalt for the Columbia County profile and the Pomona Member of the Saddle Mountains Basalt for the Cowlitz County profile. Distribution of the major, minor and trace elements through the profile shows three distinct sympathetic patterns consisting of lanthanide elements and Na; As, Sbi Th, Hf, and Ta; and transition metals Fe, Ti, V, and Cr. Ratios between the high-field strength elements Ta and Hf are nearly constant through the profile, and Hf appears to be the least mobile elements of the elements analyzed in the profile. Ratios of other elements were calculated against Hf, based on the assumption that it has remained largely immobile during weathering, to show element enrichment and depletion in the profile independent of mass-volume changes. Transition metals and Al show a progressive depletion through the upper gibbsite nodular and iron pisolite zone due to leaching in the profile. Lanthanide elements (except Ce), As, and Sb show an obvious enrichment in the iron pisolite zone relative to the gibbsite nodular zone. Volume reduction during weathering was calculated based on the immobility of Hf. In the gibbsite nodular zone, the volume reduction calculated for bulk samples is greater than for gibbsite nodule separates suggesting that a greater volume reduction occurred the matrix material surrounding the nodules. Ratios between gibbsite nodules and parent basalt of the immobile elements Hf, Ta, Fe, Ti, Th and Cr suggest that the nodules, where the relic textures are preserved, have undergone volume reduction. Based on the immobility of Hf, the gibbsite nodules lost approximately 40% of the original volume. The volume factors based on the immobility of Hf show that the pisolite zone experienced a greater volume reduction than the gibbsite nodular zone. Absolute gains and losses relative to the parent basalt show the following relative order of depletion: Na > La > Eu > Sm > Co > Mn > Ce > Sc > Ta > V > Cr > Lu > Th > Fe > Ga > Al. The lesser mobility of Ce and Lu relative to other lanthanide elements suggests fractionation of lanthanide elements in the bauxite profile. Aluminum is both enriched and depleted at different depths in the gibbsite nodular zone suggesting that Al is mobilized from the matrix and possibly the pisolite zone into Al enriched gibbsite nodules. Volume reduction and destruction of relic textures in the pisolite zone is accompanied by small-scale mobilization of Th, Cr, Fe, Hf, Ga, Sc, and Ta during the formation of iron pisolites. Formation of the iron pisolite zone above the gibbsite nodular zone may indicate a change in climate from a heavy year round to a seasonal rainfall pattern.

Over 1150 m of middle to late Eocene nonmarine arkose, lithic arkose, mudstone, and siltstone, referred to here as the Chambers Creek beds, are int~r.stratified with, and overlain by over 1600 m of late Eocene-Oligocsne(?) andesitic volcaniclastic and subordinate volcanic rocks assigned to the Ohanapecosh Formation, in a dissected structural high in the southern Washington Cascade Range, about 18 km south-southeast of the town of Packwood.

A Study of the Identification and Referral Components of Substance Abuse Intervention Programs in Washington State's Public High Schools

This multiple-case study investigated the characteristics of successful high school substance abuse intervention programs. The unit of analysis for this multiple-case study is the public high school substance abuse intervention program of twelve selected Washington State high schools. Sub-units of analysis within the multiple-case study include the various components and attributes of a substance abuse intervention program. Examples of these sub-units include: formal drug education policies; staff training on substance abuse issues and intervention skills; formal curriculum and student instruction; central office administration and building administration support for the program; community support for the program, staff time to administer the overall program, a formalized identification strategy, a formalized referral process, a formal reentry (recovery) program and the availability of formal assessment services for students. The case study design developed by this researcher included two major activities: (1) A written survey of all Washington State public high school intervention programs that identified eight public high schools that were particularly successful and four that were relatively unsuccessful in their ability to identify those students who were harmfully involved with alcohol and/or other drugs and refer these students to appropriate services. (2) A comprehensive examination of the substance abuse intervention programs for twelve selected public high schools through site visitations that included staff interviews, student interviews and the collection of various documents. A cross analysis of the results from this multiple-case study indicate that successful substance abuse intervention programs share the following characteristics: (1) Formal, established identification programs; (2) The involvement of various staff members in identifying students harmfully involved with alcohol and/or other drugs. (3) The availability of training in identification strategies for various staff members. (4) The availability of specific training in referral strategies for various staff members. (5) The availability of formal drug assessments to all students at no cost. (6) Administrative support from building principals and central office staff regarding leadership and the allocation of resources.
