Performance and emissions study of diesel and waste biodiesel blends with nanosized CZA2 of high oxygen storage capacity

Yes / In this work, the effect of the nanosized CZA2 (cerium-zirconium-aluminium) on the performance and emissions in a two- cylinder indirect injection (IDI) diesel engine, was studied. CZA2 was dispersed in diesel (D100) and waste cooking oil and tallow origin biodiesel-diesel blends (B10, B20, B30) and tested at different engine loads and constant speed. The nanocatalyst (CZA2) increased the brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and decreased the brake thermal efficiency (BTE, %) of all tested fuels, at all loads, except B20 at the lowest load. CZA2 reduced nitrogen oxides (NOx) from D100 at low and high engine loads, as well as carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) at medium and high tested loads. The dispersion of CZA2 promoted the combustion of the biodiesel blends by almost eliminating HC while reducing NOx and CO emissions at various loads. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) coupled with Attenuated Total Reflectance- Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy revealed that the addition of CZA2 in diesel and biodiesel under pyrolysis and oxidation conditions resulted in the presence of saturated species like ketones and final oxidation products such as CO2, supporting their improved combustion and emissions’ reduction in the engine tests.

Adição de resíduo do biodiesel como matéria prima na massa de cerâmica vermelha: obtenção, caracterização das propriedades tecnológicas e aspectos ambientais

O trabalho investigou adição de um resíduo resultante do processo de produção do biodiesel, na argila vermelha para obtenção de uma massa cerâmica com propriedades específicas para produção de peças cerâmicas para uso na construção civil. O resíduo utilizado foi o ácido graxo, gerado na etapa de tratamento da glicerina, o material foi cedido por uma indústria produtora de biodiesel na cidade de Porto Nacional/TO. A argila utilizada como matriz cerâmica foi retirada de uma jazida de lavra mineral de uma indústria localizada na cidade de Miracema do Tocantins/TO. O resíduo e argila foram caracterizados quanto a sua composição química, mineralógica e granulométrica. Para avaliar a influência da adição do óleo nas propriedades tecnológicas dos corpos cerâmicos produzidos, foram desenvolvidas quatro formulações com adição de óleo 0%, 0,5%, 1% e 1,5%. Os corpos de prova foram submetidos à temperatura de queima de 700°C, 800°C, 900°C e 1000°C. A taxa de aquecimento foi de 150º C/h, com patamar de 6 horas. Após o processo de queima os corpos de provas cerâmicos foram caracterizados quanto a suas propriedades tecnológicas: absorção de água, porosidade aparente, retração linear e resistência mecânica à flexão a quatro pontos e compatibilidade ambiental, onde o ensaio de lixiviação preconizado pela NBR 10.005. Nenhuma das formulações ultrapassou o limite estabelecido, no ensaio de solubilização preconizado pela NBR 10.006, a exceção do alumínio, nenhum outro elemento ultrapassou o limite estabelecido pela NBR 10.004 que preconiza os limites para emissões gasosas, apensar de o Al estar acima do estabelecido, todas as formulações foram classificadas como Classe II A – Não Inerte. De acordo com os resultados obtidos neste trabalho a adição do ácido graxo em material cerâmico é viável do ponto de vista tecnológico e ambiental, desde que respeitando os percentuais sugeridos e observando os parâmetros de processamento indicados (temperatura e patamar de queima) no estudo investigativo. / He study investigated the addition of a residue from biodiesel production, the red clay for obtaining a ceramic body with specified for production of ceramic pieces for use in construction process properties. The residue was used fatty acid generated in the treatment of glycerin step the material was donated by an industry producing biodiesel in the city of Porto Nacional / TO. The clay used as ceramic matrix was drawn from a reservoir of mineral mining from an industry located in Miracema / TO. The residue and clay are characterized for their chemical, mineralogical composition and particle size The influence of the addition of oil to the technological properties of the ceramic bodies produced four formulations were developed with the addition of oil 0%, 0.5% , 1% and 1.5%. The specimens were subjected to firing temperature of 700° C, 800°C, 900°C and 1000°C. The heating rate was 150°C/h, with the level of 6 hours. After the process of burning the bodies of ceramic tests were characterized for their technological properties : water absorption , apparent porosity , linear shrinkage and flexural strength four points and environmental compatibility , where the leaching test recommended by the NBR 10.005; no formulations exceeded the limit set in the test advocated by solubilization NBR 10.006, except aluminum , no other element has exceeded the limit set by NBR 10.004 which establishes the limits for gases emissions, although the Al being set up , all formulations were classified as Class II A - Not Inert . According to the results obtained in this study the addition of the fatty acid in ceramic material is feasible from a technological and environmental perspective, since the suggested percentage respecting and observing the processing parameters indicated (level of temperature and burning) in the investigative study.
