Modelling the Effects of Climate Change on Future DOC Export to Lake Mälaren Using a Generalized Watershed Loading Functions (GWLF) Model / Modellering av effekterna från klimatförändringar på framtida löst organiskt kol (DOC) export till Mälaren med hjälp av en GWLF-modell

Lindqvist, Klara January 2022 (has links)
Browning of boreal freshwaters due to an increased export of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC) has been observed for some decennia. Drivers include recovery from acid deposition and changing climate and land cover. Lake Mälaren provides the Swedish capital Stockholm with drinking water and an increased future browning of the lake could demand more treatment to produce acceptable drinking water. Knowledge of what can be expected in a changing climate is therefore needed. The aim of this study was to evaluate; (1) The performance of the GWLF model simulations of hydrology and DOC export for 13 catchments draining into the Galten and Ekoln basins in lake Mälaren; (2) How simulated DOC export from the 13 catchments would change in response to climate scenarios RCP2.6, 6.0 and 8.5; and (3) If climate change impact on DOC export to lake Mälaren potentially will demand more treatment of the lake water in the future to produce acceptable drinking water to the Stockholm area. All data used were open access and include temperature, precipitation, discharge, total organic carbon (TOC) and water colour, land cover and soil types. In comparison to other studies, good model performance was found when simulating daily streamflow, baseflow, surface runoff, daily DOC loads and monthly DOC loads. Model simulations of DOC concentrations were less certain, but for some catchments similar results were obtained as in other studies. Increased air temperature resulted in higher simulated soil temperatures and a longer growing season. An increase in both annual precipitation and evapotranspiration resulted in only slight increase in simulated annual streamflow. There were, however, large seasonal impacts on streamflow with higher winter flows and lower spring flood. Annual DOC loads increased, mainly due to increased DOC concentrations over the whole year, as the annual streamflow did not change greatly. Increased winter streamflow and DOC concentrations resulted in large increases in DOC loads. The impact was larger for the higher emission scenarios. DOC loading to Galten and Ekoln increased in all future scenarios during winter, with a likely impact on DOC concentrations in the eastern basins as well. Increased loads to Ekoln are likely to impact the drinking water production of Stockholm more direct than the increases in Galten, as the Ekoln water has a shorter transit time to the drinking water withdrawals. The GWLF model shows much promise in predicting DOC concentrations and loads to lake Mälaren in a changing climate. To estimate the effects of DOC export to lake Mälaren on future drinking water production, further work also needs to be done on in-lake transport and processes.

A presença e a ausência dos rios de São Paulo: acumulação primitiva e valorização da água / The presence and absence of the São Paulo rivers: primitive accumulation and water valorization

Gouvêa, José Paulo Neves 20 May 2016 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the process of private appropriation of the São Paulo and his participation in the production of the city\'s space, Aspects related to social, political and economic development, From its foundation in the 16th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Avaliação do desempenho de uma estação de tratamento de água com sistema de dupla filtração, em escala real / Evaluation of the performance of the water treatment station with a double filtration system in real scale

Saldanha, João Rodrigo 28 March 2002 (has links)
Water treatment by means of a double filtration system is in a relatively high stage of development, however, there are still few data on real scale operations. The aim of this work was to evaluate a double filtration system in a real scale (ETA2) for the treatment of water, of the autonomous service of water and sewer of the city of São Carlos - SP, which treats water from the Ribeirão do Feijão (name of a local river), and is constituted of three filtration units, each a contain a direct up-flow sand filter, and a rapid filter. In the first stage, the sand of the filters was characterized, and the operational conditions of the ETA2 were evaluated. Next, the general situation of the ETA was studied by means of several parameters (turbidity, pH, expansion of the sand during washing process, counting of particles, total coliforms and Escherichia coli), in a order to detect the main problems. Finally, a confrontation between the ETA2 an a double filtration pilot Plant was carried through. This study made infer that: I) due to the low filtration rates of the ETA2`s filtration units, excessive doses of coagulant and lack of control of the washings, the actual production of water was low (around 90%); ii) the sometimes insufficient performance of the direct up-flow sand filtration and rapid filtration systems was mainly caused by an inefficient mixing of the coagulant with the natural water, lack of sand in direct up-flow filters; iii) the building up of the lossof cargo in the direct up-flow san filtration in filters of the ETA2 was more accentuated than in the Pilot Plant due to the mixture of the filtration materials.

Utilização de filtração direta ascendente como pré-tratamento à filtração rápida descendente para tratamento de água para abastecimento / The use of direct up-flow filtration as a pretreatment for rapid filtration in drinking water production

Gusmão, Paulo Tadeu Ribeiro de 19 April 2001 (has links)
Based on me investigation carried out in pilot plant, from June 1998 to October 1999, using natural surface raw water with low turbidity and color, two systems of two-stage filtration have been evaluated. Intermediate bottom discharges in the direct up-flow filtration units have resulted in significant reduction in thee headloss in gravel granular medium. The turbidity, apparent-color, total iron and manganese concentrations of the final effluents of the systems have attended the Brazilian Standards for drinking water production. The increase of headloss in gravel granular medium in system S02 was smaller in me direct up-fiow filtration unit than in the rapid filter, the opposite occurring in system S01, where some tests have proved lhe rapid filter redundant. The filter runs time were 27 to 88 hours in system S01 and 14 to 35 hours in system S02. In certain cases, flocculation was predominant in the direct up-flow roughing filtration unit, jeopardizing the effiuent quality. System S02 has proved advantageous in relation to system S01, except when in system S01 the rapid filter was redundant.

Hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide- Polyethylenimine- Dextran Sulfate Polymer Gel System as a Water Shut-Off Agent in Unconventional Gas Reservoirs

Jayakumar, Swathika 1986- 02 October 2013 (has links)
Technologies such as horizontal wells and multi-stage hydraulic fracturing have made ultra-low permeability shale and tight gas reservoirs productive but the industry is still on the learning curve when it comes to addressing various production issues. Some of the problems encountered while hydraulically fracturing these reservoirs are the absence of frac barriers, thinner shales and the increased presence of geological hazards. Induced vertical fractures sometimes extend to an underlying aquifer and become a conduit to the well. We have developed a low-concentration, low-viscosity and delayed-crosslink polymeric gel system as a water shutoff agent for hydraulically-fractured tight gas and shale reservoirs, where some fractures might connect to water rich zones. The system also is a significant improvement over traditional flowing gels for fracture water shutoff in conventional reservoirs because of these features. The gel uses high molecular weight hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) at low polymer concentrations with a delayed organic crosslinker. This crosslinker is more environmentally benign and provides much longer gelation time and stronger final gels than comparable polymer loadings with chromium carboxylate crosslinkers at higher temperatures. The low viscosity system allows low-pressure extrusion of gelant into the narrow-aperture fractures present in unconventional gas reservoirs. The gelant can be pumped at low pressures due to lower polymer concentrations and delayed gelation point. This allows the potential to seal problem zones that are producing excess water even when the fractures conducting water have very narrow apertures. By impeding water production, the gel system developed here can effectively delay water loading thereby avoiding abandonment or installation of expensive equipment with increased operational costs, thus extending life and reserves of unconventional gas wells.

Impact of Climate and Soil Variability on Crop Water Productivity and Food Security of Irrigated Agriculture in Northern Togo (West Africa)

Gadedjisso-Tossou, Agossou 12 March 2020 (has links)
West Africa is subject to frequent yield losses due to erratic rainfall and degraded soils. At the same time, its population is expected to double by 2050. This situation is alarming in northern Togo, a West African dry savannah area, where rainfed maize is a staple food. Thus, it is necessary to improve agricultural productivity, e.g., by evaluating and introducing alternative irrigation management strategies, which may be implemented in this region. For this purpose, the present investigation focused on evaluating the potential of deficit and supplemental irrigation, as well as assessing the impact of climate and soil variability on maize yield under irrigated agriculture using irrigation optimisation strategies in northern Togo. The Optimal Climate Change Adaption Strategies in Irrigation (OCCASION) framework was adapted and employed to address the research objectives. It involves: (i) a weather generator for simulating long-term climate time series; (ii) the AquaCrop model, which was utilised to simulate the irrigation during the growing periods and the maize yield response to given irrigation management strategies; and (iii) a problem-specific algorithm for optimal irrigation scheduling with limited water supply. Five irrigation management strategies viz. T1: no irrigation (NI), T2: controlled deficit irrigation (CDI) and T3: full irrigation (FI) in the wet season, T4: controlled deficit irrigation (CDI) and T5: full irrigation (FI) in the dry season were assessed regarding their impact on maize yield in northern Togo. The results showed high variability in rainfall during the wet season, which led to substantial variability in the expected yield for NI. This variability was significantly lessened when optimised supplemental irrigation management strategies (CDI or FI) were applied. This also holds for the irrigation scenarios under the dry season. Finally, these findings were validated by an irrigation field experiment conducted at an agricultural research institute in northern Togo. Under a moderate level of deficit irrigation during the vegetative and reproductive growth stages, the above-ground biomass and the maize grain yield were reduced. However, a moderate level of deficit irrigation during the vegetative growth stage could result in similar values of water productivity to that of fully irrigated treatment. It was found that, based on the values of the statistical indicators, AquaCrop has accurately simulated the maize grain yield for all the irrigation strategies evaluated. The results of this study revealed that climate variability might engender a higher variability in the maize yields of northern Togo than soil variability does.
