Intra-annual variability in standards of water and sanitation in Upper Humla, Nepal : an investigation into the causes, importance and impact

This study investigates the impact of seasonality on standards of water and sanitation in the mountainous district of Humla, Nepal. The research considers impact on two levels: community level access and service delivery. First of all, it examines annual variation in village level access to water and sanitation. Secondly, it looks at the wider picture of service delivery and considers how seasonal variations present opportunities and challenges for improvement in standards for water and sanitation. Three case studies from Humla are presented which illustrate village level access to water and sanitation over a calendar year. These case studies summarise the content of 45 semi-structured interviews, 9 focus group discussions and 9 months of observational work in the district. Variations in weather, village population, infrastructure functionality, and environmental conditions are found to influence the experienced levels of access to water and sanitation at any given time. The impact of seasonality on service delivery was investigated via 39 key informant interviews. Both climatic (e.g. weather) and non-climatic (e.g. budget timings) sources of seasonality are found to impact programme implementation. The mismatch of local seasonal calendars and those imposed by central hubs is found to cause particular difficultly in effective delivery of water and sanitation services. The findings of this research have theoretical, methodological and practical implications. Theoretically, it is suggested that a mountain community s level of access to water and sanitation varies considerably over the course of a calendar year to the point where it needs to be considered if on the ground standards are to be improved. Methodological guidance is provided detailing means of investigating seasonality and its impact on standards of water and sanitation in other scenarios. Practical suggestions focus on incorporating seasonality into assessments of access to water and sanitation and programme delivery in mountain communities.

Variations in access to domestic water supply in En Nahud District, Sudan

The central aim of this thesis is to develop an understanding of variation in access to domestic water supply in a semi-arid, non-riverain area of Sudan. En Nahud District, in North Kordofan Province, was selected for study because it has existing water supply problems and contains distinct spatial variations in geology, which affects the potential for development of underground water resources. Fieldwork in Sudan was carried out between July and December 1988, and information was collected from a range of sources using a variety of methods. The latter included: semi-structured household interviews conducted with women; key informant interviews; observation; and various published and unpublished articles and data sets. In the thesis, the first chapter introduces the national and international context of this study. Past and present water supply development policies and projects in the Sudan are outlined, and set against the goals of the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade. In the second chapter, the research methodology is discussed. Attempt was made to overcome the several spatial, temporal social and economic biases which have occurred in other studies. In the third chapter, the thesis is placed in the physical and socio-economic context of the Province, and the dynamic relationship between water supply and demand is outlined. The following three chapters focus upon the primary constraints which limit access to domestic water supply: water availability; at-source costs; and transportation costs. The components of each, and the way in which they operate to restrict access, are investigated in relation to varying family resources and requirements. The borrowing of carriage resources and the purchase of transportation services are examined as strategies for overcoming families' internal collection-capacity constraints. Finally, seasonal outmigration is discussed as an important response to inadequate access to water supply. In its conclusion, this thesis shows clearly the importance of examining access to water at the family scale: inter-household variations, such as the ownership of carriage animals and varying labour resources, are shown to be influential in affecting household water supply strategies.

The role of the state in the provision of domestic water supply and sanitation in rural Botswana

This thesis examines the role of the state in the provision of domestic water supply and sanitation in rural Botswana. The delivery of these services reflects wider international commitment to this sector. Support has been directed through the United Nations' International Drinking Water , , Supply and Sanitation Decade, which has provided member governments with policy recommendations and financial and technical assistance. These recommendations have prescribed the use of bottom-up delivery systems based upon community participation and local government intervention to ensure the achievement of policy objectives. The thesis considers how far the recommendations of the Decade have been implemented in Botswana in providing rural water and sanitation and assesses the extent to which policy objectives have been met. By means of a political economy approach to investigate the role of the state in rural development and fieldwork carried out to investigate the implementation of two specific projects, attention has focussed on the constraints to policy formulation and, implementation in achieving these objectives. It is suggested that the managerial informed prescriptions provided by the Decade are often, inappropriate to the policy arena of specific countries. This is because policy formulation and implementation are determined by factors which are politically motivated and which are not necessarily compatible with managerial or technocratic considerations. It is this inconsistency which has in large part been responsible for the non-attainment of policy objectives. Through detailed field investigations carried out in Botswana, the roles ascribed by the state to different institutions at the local government and community levels in rural policy formulation and implementation are examined in the context of the concept of decentralisation. The suitability of this policy arena for the delivery of the water and sanitation projects is then considered. From the analysis the conclusion, is reached that the context in which rural policy formulation and implementation takes place is not conducive to supporting a bottom-up strategy as prescribed by the Decade. Reasons for this lie in colonial history and in the political and economic circumstances of contemporary Botswana. In consequence, the provision of domestic water supply and sanitation has been affected in two important ways. First, the state has been unwilling to adopt the comprehensive prescriptions offered by the Decade. Second, where it has, constraints rooted in the state's unwillingness to decentralise rural development has prevented the achievement of policy objectives.

THE SOCIAL AND SPATIAL DYNAMICS OF AN URBAN ECOLOGY, WATER AND SANITATION MANAGEMENT IN EARLY MODERN PIACENZA

This research is about the social/spatial management of water in an urban setting. The water utility of Piacenza, Italy, and specifically, the organization of the now extinct canal system, was investigated for the period between 1545 and 1736. Through analysis of the administration of the canal system and the water utility this thesis constructs an aspect of the political ecology of Piacenza. Political ecology as a discipline lies at the intersection of the environmental context, land use, spatial design, demographics and social relationships. The study looked at how the city organized itself to manage urban water and sanitation delivery, the methods used to communicate with the users, the actions taken to keep the system in good repair, the responses to crises, and the limitations of the social organization and technological capabilities. The archival documents contained within the Congregazione sopra l’ornato (CSO), the municipal committee charged with management of the canals, form the core of the research. Analysis revealed a finely-tuned social system that involved noble oversight, the use of expert engineers, public/private partnerships for maintenance of the canals with millers and consorti as key people, and an attempt to control cheating with fines and penalties.

Yes / Global water security presents a complex problem for human societies and will become more acute as the impacts of climate change escalate. Water security connects the practical water and sanitation challenges of households to the dynamics of global hydroclimates and ecosystems in the Anthropocene. To ensure the successful deployment of attention and resources, it is necessary to identify the most pressing questions for water research. Here, we present the results of a scoping exercise conducted across the global water sector. More than 400 respondents submitted an excess of 4,000 potential questions. Drawing on expert analysis, we highlight 100 indicative research questions across six thematic domains: water and sanitation for human settlements; water and sanitation safety risk management; water security and scarcity; hydroclimate-ecosystem-Anthropocene dynamics; multi-level governance; and knowledge production. These questions offer an interdisciplinary and multi-scalar framework for guiding the nature and space of water research for the coming decades.

Fabrication and characterization of anti-microbial and biofouling resistant nanofibers with silver nanoparticles and immobilized enzymes for application in water filtration

Thesis (MSc (Biochemistry))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Due to a global lack of access to potable water, a problem particularly affecting people in developing countries and the poor, improvement on existing water purification methods are necessary to provide more cost effective, accessible and efficient methods of water purification. In drinking water systems, biofilms are a potential source of contamination, which can affect the biological stability and hygienic safety of water. In industrial water systems, biofilms can cause corrosion, resistance in flow systems and a decrease in efficiency of membranes. Nanotechnology has been identified as a technology to utilize in water purification problem solving. Alternatives to the use of chemical biocides and antibiotics need to be investigated therefore; the focus of this study was the fabrication and characterization of polymer nanofibers containing silver nanoparticles as biocide and anti-biofouling nanofibers with hydrolytic enzymes immobilized on the surface. The aim of this study was to synthesize and compare poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers and poly (acrylonitrile) (PAN) nanofibers with silver nanoparticles to determine which type of fiber will be the most appropriate for application in water sanitation. The two types of fibers were to be compared based on morphology, silver nanoparticle content, physical distribution of silver nanoparticles, levels of silver leaching from the fibers in water, which could imply toxicity, and most importantly, anti-microbial efficacy. Back scattering electron images revealed that silver nanoparticles in PVA nanofibers were more evenly dispersed than in PAN nanofibers, but that PAN nanofibers had higher silver nanoparticle content. This was confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Both PVA and PAN nanofibers containing silver nanoparticles had excellent anti-microbial activity, with PVA nanofibers killing between 91% and 99% of bacteria in a contaminated water sample and PAN nanofibers killed 100%. When investigated by SEM, the biocidal effect of PAN nanofibers containing silver nanoparticles can be observed as morphological changes in the cell walls. Neither PVA nor PAN nanofibers leached silver into water. PVA is a non-toxic and biodegradable synthetic polymer, and PVA-silver nanofibers have excellent anti-microbial activity, making it applicable in water sanitation in an environmental conscious milieu. PAN nanofibers are more conductive to the formation of silver nanoparticles, have higher silver nanoparticle content, allowing the complete sanitation of pathogenically contaminated water samples. PAN nanofibers also have better longevity and strength in water, making it ideal for water filtration and sanitation in higher throughput systems. Furthermore, immobilized enzymes are being investigated as possible alternatives to inefficient conventional methods of controlling and removing biofilms from filtration systems. This study demonstrates the covalent immobilization of two industrial proteases and an amylase enzyme onto polymer nanofibers widely used in filtration membranes. Confirmed by FTIR, these nanofibers were successfully activated by amidination, allowing the covalent immobilization of respectively two serine proteases and an α-amylase onto the fibers. When inspected visually, fibers largely retained their original morphology after activation and enzyme immobilization. Immobilized enzymes were, however visible as aggregated particles on the nanofiber surfaces. The large surface area to volume ratio provided by the nanofibers as immobilization surface, allowed sufficient amounts of enzymes to be immobilized onto the fibers so that all enzymes retained above 80% of the specific activity of the free enzymes. For each of the immobilized enzymes, just below 30% of initial activity was retained after 10 repeated cycles of use. Fibers with immobilized enzymes on their surface did not support the growth of biofilms, as opposed to plain nanofibers, which did support the growth of biofilms. When considering the combined advantages of this effective immobilization process, the robustness of the enzymes used in this study, and their effectiveness against biofilms in their immobilized state, a valuable addition has been made to technology available for the control of biofilm formation on filtration membranes, and could potentially be employed to control biofilm formation in water filtration systems. A combination of anti-microbial and anti-biofouling nanofibers into a single nanofiltration product may prove to be highly applicable in water sanitation systems. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: As gevolg van 'n wêreldwye gebrek aan toegang tot drinkbare water, 'n probleem wat veral mense in ontwikkelende lande en armes raak, is dit van belang dat bestaande metodes van watersuiwering verbeter word om voorsiening te maak vir meer koste-effektiewe, toeganklike en doeltreffende metodes van watersuiwering. In drinkwater stelsels is biofilms 'n potensiële bron van besoedeling, wat die biologiese stabiliteit en die higiëniese veiligheid van water beïnvloed. In industriële waterstelsels kan biofilms tot die verwering van pyplyne lei, weerstand in die stroomstelsels veroorsaak en 'n afname in die doeltreffendheid van membrane veroorsaak. Nanotegnologie is geïdentifiseer as 'n tegnologie wat aangewend kan word in watersuiwerings probleemoplossing. Dit is bevestig deur “energy dispersive X-ray” (EDX) analise. Beide PVA en PAN nanovesels met silwer nanopartikels het uitstekende antimikrobiese aktiwiteit getoon, met PVA vesels wat tussen 91% en 99% bakterieë in besoedelde water monsters kon doodmaak en PAN vesels wat 100% bakterieë kon uitwis. PAN vesels is meer gunstig tot die vorming van silwer nanopartikels, en het 'n hoër silwer nanopartikel inhoud, dus word patogeen besoedelde water volledig gesteriliseer. PAN vesels het ook 'n beter langslewendheid en weerstandige sterkte in water, wat dit ideaal vir water filtrasie en sanitasie in hoër deursettings stelsels maak. As die gesamentlike voordele van hierdie doeltreffende immobilisasie proses, die robuustheid van die ensieme en hulle doeltreffendheid teen biofilms in hul geïmmobiliseerde toestand in ag geneem word, is ʼn waardevolle toevoeging gemaak tot tegnologie wat beskikbaar is vir die beheer van biofilm vorming op filtrasie membrane, en dit kan potensieel gebruik word om biofilm vorming filter stelsels te beheer. Overlooking Girls’ Wellbeing : The opportunity cost of education encountered by menstruating schoolgirls in Sub Saharan Africa

Educating girls is advantageous for future livelihood security and socio economic development. Menstruating schoolgirls especially need to experience improved menstrual hygiene management (MHM) within schools in order to obtain quality education towards securing future as well as present wellbeing. This paper explores how menstruating schoolgirls’ opportunities are affected by insufficient water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities in schools within Sub-Saharan Africa. The required information has been gathered through a qualitative research method using scientifically based material on the situation of MHM in Sub-Saharan African schools as well as semi-structured questionnaires alongside my personal recollection of MHM. Focus has been given to the capabilities of menstruating schoolgirls under existing WASH facilities in schools analysed through the Capability Approach. Effects of poor MHM in schools are known to cause discomfort and poor constructive participation during lessons as well as decreased school attendance. A gender-based approach has also been examined which presents most schools as non-conducive towards girl’s education promotion. / Utbildning är gynnsam för deras framtida försörjningsmöjligheter samt för socioekonomisk utveckling. Menstruerande skolflickor är mest utsatta under de otillräckliga sanitetsförhållanden som råder i flera skolor söder om Sahara. Den här rapporten utforskar skolflickors förmåga att sköta deras menshygien under skolvistelsen samt hur bristande sanitetsresurser påverkar flickornas framtida utsikter och akademiska kapacitet. Undersökningen är baserad på en kombination av kvalitativa metoder och material som vetenskapliga studier, en semistrukturerade enkätundersökning samt min egen erfarenhet av menshygien i skolor söder om Sahara. Fokus har tillägnats menstruerande skolflickors möjligheter att hantera deras mens i ohygieniska förhållanden genom att koppla detta till ”The Capability Approach”. Avsaknaden av fungerande sanitetsstrukturer försämrar skolflickors välmående vilket leder till nedsatt deltagande under lektioner samt minskad skolgång vid mens. En könsbaserad utgångspunkt har det också påvisat att skolorna är mindre anpassande för flickor.

The availability and adequacy of water, sanitation and hygiene (wash) infrastructure in 13 mission hospitals in rural Zambia

Magister Public Health - MPH / Background and Rationale The World Health Organization (WHO) has shown that the provision of Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in Health Care Facilities (HCFs) of many low and middle-income countries is poor. This is compounded by the lack of national plans and consolidated data on WASH in HCFs. This study assessed the availability and adequacy of Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure in 13 mission hospitals spanning 13 districts in Zambia. The objectives of this study were to identify the different kinds of WASH infrastructure available, and their adequacy, and factors influencing the status of WASH infrastructure and services in the selected hospitals. Methodology This study had a mixed methods design with semi-quantitative, descriptive and qualitative components. Assessments were conducted of the WASH infrastructure on the hospital property, and specifically in the male medical wards and outpatient facilities as two tracer areas, using a WHO checklist adapted and administered by the researcher. Checklist items were assigned scores (0=absent/bad to 2=on target/good) and total WASH scores for each facility compiled. For the qualitative component, individual semi-structured interviews using an interview guide were conducted, also by the researcher, with the facility managers and the head staff of the male medical wards. Results Overall coverage with an improved water source was reasonably good with 11 of the 13 hospitals reporting availability of improved water sources within the facilities. Hand washing basin coverage was similarly good. In contrast, coverage by well-functioning toilets was not as high, with 5 hospitals reporting toilets that were either broken, blocked, or having no running water and no toilet paper. Facility WASH scores varied from 22 (38%) to 57 (97%) out of a possible total of 58 points. Most of the Facility Managers indicated that the hospital WASH infrastructure was old, and with frequent breakdowns. This was worsened by lack of readily available spares and materials for repairing once there was a fault. Conclusion This study reveals an uneven coverage of WASH across facilities and elements, with poor sanitation a challenge across facilities. This is compounded by ongoing challenges in WASH infrastructure maintenance. Moving forward, there is need for government to develop a clear policy on WASH in HCFs. A national plan with resources and a monitoring framework need to be in place for streamlined support and tracking of progress by all stakeholders.

Biosand Water Filter Evaluation: Meta-Evaluation and Pilot Study of Field Use Indicators

Diarrheal diseases are a global public health burden, killing 1.8 million people annually. Diarrhea disproportionately affects children and those in poverty. Most diarrheal cases can be prevented through safe drinking water, basic hygiene and/or sanitation measures, with drinking water interventions having the most impact on reducing diarrheal disease. A meta-evaluation was completed of studies evaluating a specific household water treatment method, the biosand water filter. Results from the meta-evaluation illustrate that biosand water filters improve drinking water quality and reduce diarrheal disease. However, there is no generally agreed upon field method for determining biosand water filter effectiveness that is useable in low-resource communities. A pilot study was conducted of potential field use indicators, including the Colilert coliform Presence/ Absence test, hydrogen sulfide, alkalinity, hardness, pH, and fluorescently-labeled latex microspheres. The study included both laboratory and field testing. The Colilert Presence/ Absence test had the highest correlation to the United States Environmental Protection Agency standard method (IDEXX Quantitrays), but more data is needed before making a recommendation. This study adds to understanding about evaluation of biosand water filters and provides preliminary data to address the need for a field use indicator for biosand water filters.
