THE FORMATIVE EVALUATION OF A WEB-BASED PERFORMANCE SUPPORT SYSTEM DESIGNED TO IMPROVE ACCOMMODATION OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES IN POSTSECONDARY EDUCATIONKrampe, Kristina M. 01 January 2002 (has links)
The numbers of students with disabilities enrolling in postsecondary institutions has increased since the passage of key disability rights legislation. As a result, the need for information about accommodating postsecondary students with disabilities has increased in the last two decades, especially since the passage of the Higher Education Amendments of 1998. This study used Dick and Carey's (1996) model of instructional design to conduct a formative evaluation of a Web-based performance support system (WPSS) designed for academic administrators, instructional employees, and auxiliary service administrators to enhance accommodations for postsecondary students with disabilities. Formative evaluation consisted of expert review, one-to-one, consumer analysis, and field trial phases. During the expert review phase, subject matter experts, instructional design and usability experts, and individuals with disabilities completed surveys to assess the degree to which the WPSS contained current content, included elements of effective design, and was accessible to individuals with disabilities. During the one-to-one, consumer analysis, and field trial phases, academic administrators, instructional personnel, and auxiliary service administrators on the University of Kentucky campus completed a questionnaire using the WPSS to assess the degree to which the WPSS was effective in providing information. In addition, users completed a survey to assess their perceptions of the WPSS. Finally, data were collected to assess difficulties encountered by users. Results from the expert review phase of the evaluation suggest that the WPSS contained current content, included elements of effective design, and was accessible to individuals with disabilities. Analysis of the questionnaire scores from all phases revealed that users obtained a mean accuracy rate of 74% or higher on the in-session questionnaire. In addition, all users required a mean of 3.9 minutes or less per question to locate responses for items on the questionnaire. The perceptions of all users about the WPSS were positive. Results also indicated that users reported a variety of technical difficulties; however, the majority were related to server errors. Revisions made to the WPSS after each phase of evaluation are described. Implications of the investigation for researchers and Web developers, limitations of the investigation, and areas for future research also are discussed.

A HYPERMEDIA SIMULATION THAT TEACHES DEFENSIVE DRIVING SKILLSLin, Borchyi 01 January 2006 (has links)
Because of increased commuter traffic volume on rural roadways collisions between motor vehicles and farm equipment have increased in frequency and severity over the last several years. This study investigated the effects of a multimedia narrative simulation program that taught hazard recognition and promoted defensive driving on rural roadways shared by farm equipment. A companion animated driving game allowed users to practice reaction/stopping time distances with a simulated automobile on a simulated highway when objects appeared suddenly in the path of the automobile. The program and game were delivered by an objective-oriented client/server computer program that also recorded and stored student pre-test, performance, and posttest data.
Prior to the main study a user test and pilot study were conducted. Fifteen instructional systems design graduate students completed the user test to evaluate the study procedures and debug the program. Then, a pilot study sample of 17 rural high school students completed the narrative simulation exercise, the reaction/stopping time game, and the study measures that included a demographic survey, pre- and post measures of predicted reaction/stopping time, recognition of collisions hazard cues, numerical performance scores for the simulation exercise, and tracking logs of each student's performance during the animated raction/stopping time game.
The main study sample included 123 students age 16 years and older who attended four rural and suburban county high schools. The schools were randome assigned to the four treatment conditions, one control and three treatment groups. The treatment group students completed either (a) the multimedia narrative simulation only, (b) the animated reaction time/stopping time game only, or (c) both the multimedia simulation and the reaction time/stopping time game.
As hypothezised, students in the groups that completed the hazard recognition and defensive driving skills performed significantly better on posttests of those skills than students in groups that did not complete the simulation. Compared to students that did not complete the reaction/stopping time game, significantly more students that did complete the game became aware that they could not stop the simulated automobile before hitting an object in its pathway. Yet there was nodifference across the four groups in students' estimates of reaction/stopping time distances.
Limitations of the study are noted and discussed. Recommendations for future studies are proposed.

公務人力是國家最重要的資產,舉凡政府施政的良莠與施政的品質,皆與公務人力的素質息息相關。公務人員雖經考選進入政府機關服務,但隨著社會及時代的變遷,仍須不斷的經由訓練及學習以保持一定的素質與技能。現代政府由於質能的轉變,對於公務人力資源的需求,已由「量」的擴增轉為「質」的提升。為因應此一趨勢,公務人員的訓練已成為政府施政中不可或缺的一環。同時由於資訊科技的進步與發展及網路時代的來臨,以及政府倡導終身學習的理念與強調公務機關應向企業學習的呼聲下,更突顯出公務人力發展中訓練的重要性。
網路化訓練有別於傳統之訓練方式,其具有不侷限於時間、空間之特性
,與傳統的教育訓練有所不同。本研究希望藉由國內公務訓練機構網路化訓練資源與實施現況之了解為起點,從而提出相關建議,提供公務訓練機構於建置網路化訓練與實施之參考,期能進一步提升公務人員之人力素質,增強國家競爭力。
本研究藉由相關之文獻、公務訓練機構網路學習網站之內容分析與個案研究等方法,得到以下結論:
網路學習系統平台功能,必須能站在學習者的角度來考量。從學習者的角度而言,其應包含課程主題、檢核測驗、公告討論、資源共享與訓練管理等五部分。而影響網路化訓練實施的影響因素有:1.策略因素。2.組織因素。3.學習者因素。4.資訊環境因素。5.課程因素。6.學習成效評量等。
公務訓練機構網路化訓練之導入或建置,應該經過完整有效的需求分析與規劃,而實施之主要困難與問題,可分為對內及對外兩個部分。對內必須能夠將人力、經費等各種資源予以整合,對外應能加強與外部廠商的協力合作及對學習者的行銷與溝通。就實施效益而言,其具有解決訓練機構人力不足的問題,並能將訓練業務做完整的提供與服務。就未來公務人力訓練發展的影響層面而言,公務訓練機構及其辦理訓練之人員,須體認到此一訓練趨勢,同時在對學員訓練的輔導及相關輔助措施,也必須有所因應。而目前公務訓練機構網路學習資源尚有資源重複運用及學習對象限制等情形,為能將有效的資源做最大的發揮,應該予以整合。

<p>This thesis introduces the idea of an interactive web-based visualization tool to support inquiry-based science learning. The problem that occurs when the teachers and students are discussing the collected data is that they are lacking a tool to display such large quantities of data. It is often hard to fully understand such data. This education tool makes use of different visualization approaches in order to support students while getting insights from their collected data. In this thesis I proposed and implemented an interactive web-based visualization tool that was used at a prototype level during the educational activities. The requirements and user needs led the development of this prototype. Requirement elicitations have been done as a part of the research project conducted by CeLeKT.</p><p> </p><p>For the development of this tool, it was necessary for the input of the teachers and students in order to get an understanding of the requirements. The initial inquiry of the teachers and students show the necessity and usefulness of an interactive web-based visualization tool to support learning practices.</p>

The birth and expansion of Internet has brought down the boundaries that kept business partners from sharing extensive informa-tion between each other (McClelland, 2003). The increase of information has yielded a bet-ter understanding of your business partners and one could perhaps think that it is only positive outcomes derived from the increased information sharing. However, research show upon an extensive need for structuring the information flows which relates to an or-ganization. Gartner group (2003) presented an investigation present ting that managers spend over 49 minutes every day in their mailbox for reading and sending e-mails and Del-phi Group (2002) presented figures saying that executives spend over two hours a day searching for the right information (cited in Sandkuhl, 2005). Expected outcomes for im-proving the information logistics are however not only related to time savings activities, business partners could also expect enhanced improvement regarding business processes and operational efficiency. The need for structuring the information flow is therefore an in-teresting subject to investigate and will also be the focus of this thesis. For specifying and narrowing the theoretical framework the authors have chosen to focus upon information sharing based on a web-based system. <strong>Purpose: </strong>The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how a company can utilize a web-based system to share information with their first tier suppliers. <strong></strong></p><p><strong>Methodology: </strong>In order to fulfil the purpose a case study approach has been chosen whereas semi-structured telephone interviews have been complimented with face-to-face interviews for gathering material. <p>Web technologies have necessitated a transformation culture in higher education<br />
institutions. Many of these institutions are employing web technologies whose<br />
development, for varying reasons, is not supported by research in their field and<br />
domain of use. One such field is instructional design for the web learning.<br />
Although there is a lot of research on the most effective instructional design<br />
strategies, the use of research for web-based learning applications has been<br />
limited. <br />

This thesis reports on a study aimed at transforming the research on instructional<br />
design into practice by designing an instructional design system and providing an<br />
argument for its implementation. The argument is intended to facilitate the design<br />
and development of an instructional design subsystem of the web, that would in<br />
turn offer effective and efficient ways for creating web-based learning materials<br />
to instructors.<br />

The study started by examining the various paradigms, theories and practices of<br />
instructional design with the intent of using them to enrich and improve the<br />
practice of instructional design in web learning. It undertook a thorough and<br />
systematic review of the literature on instructional design in order to come up<br />
with an instructional design system. The design approach used successful design<br />
patterns that have been used elsewhere, e.g. in software design, to create common<br />
responses or solutions to recurrent problems and circumstances. Instructional<br />
design patterns were identified in this study as the recurrent problems or processes<br />
instructional designers go through while creating instructional materials, whose<br />
solutions can be reused over and over again.<br />

This study used an iterative developmental research process of finding and<br />
modelling an instructional design process as the research methodology. This<br />
process follows and builds on existing research on instructional models, theories<br />
and strategies, and ensures that the same methodology can be used to test the<br />
theories in the design, thus improving both the research and the design.</p>

Improving telemedicine onboard Norwegian ships and drilling platforms. : A study of intersectoral co-operation in Maritime MedicinePuskeppeleit, Monika Petra January 2008 (has links)
Background: Using telemedicine to provide health services for seafarers represents a special case of intersectoral co-operation.Since 2006, several North Sea drilling platforms and internationally operating Norwegian merchant ships have usedonboard telemedicine equipment continuously. Experience gained through this new technology has improvedintersectoral co-operation regarding seafarers’ health care. Aim: This study aimed to analyze the need for intersectoral co-operation and networking in maritime medicine by usingtelemedicine equipment at sea. Various Norwegian maritime organizations and institutions participated in the study. Methods: I conducted a qualitative descriptive survey using a Web-organized interactive interview technique, a new mode ofinteraction based on a semi-structured interview guide for data collection. After conducting exploratory personalinterviews in October 2006, I developed a Web-based questionnaire comprising 53 questions. Participants receivedan e-mail invitation containing an online link to an Internet-based questionnaire. Individuals unable to use the Webbasedlink could return the completed questionnaire as an e-mail attachment. I collected data between April and June2007 and evaluated some questions according to the principles of content analysis and others with simple quantitative analysis, e.g., frequency and distribution. Results: Among 33 persons contacted, 31 (94%) agreed to participate in the study. Respondents represented 11 variousmaritime organizations and companies. Fourteen worked as maritime officers, nine as maritime managers, and eightas medical professionals. Importantly, fourteen respondents (45%) had demonstrated practical working experiencewith telemedicine at sea. According to content analysis, the following categories were developed: communicationandevidence-based telemedicine; maritime e-health standardization and knowledge management; improvingtelemedicine quality management; organizational, technical, and medical competences and intersectoral approach;technical standardization and networking; and communication and information. Four main categories illuminated theparticipants’ demands, i.e., information, communication, standardization, and centralization, and led to thedevelopment of national e-health policy and strategy to support the Norwegian maritime e-health society vianetworking and intersectoral co-operation. Conclusions: Intersectoral co-operation in maritime telemedicine requires interorganizational networking in order to introduceeffective and compatible international maritime e-health standards for seafarers’ healthcare. The Norwegian Centrefor Maritime Medicine (NCMM), a Centre of Excellence in maritime medical research, will participate importantlyin this process. An experiment to review the quality of Web-based multimedia materialAl-haddad, Khalil January 1999 (has links)
Currently, many educators are focusing on the development of Web-based material and the quality of such material needs to be evaluated. Expert review, as a formative evaluation method, is an important method to evaluate the material prior to release. Other studies have described the use of Subject-Matter Experts (SMEs) and also domain students, with enough knowledge in the subject area, as a way of enhancing the quality of the reviewed material. In addition to the SMEs and domain students a lecturer and graduate student, both in the subject discipline area, were used to review Web-based lectures on Advanced Computer Architectures. Both additional reviewers had sufficient knowledge of the discipline. The research investigates three main hypotheses: I) whether a review conducted by domain reviewers (SME and domain student) or discipline reviewers improves the quality of material, 2) whether using discipline reviewers improves the quality of the material more than domain reviewers and 3) whether there are differences in the quality of the material resulting from students' and lecturers' review. Five versions of the material were developed and used as inputs to an experiment that was designed to test the hypotheses by using questionnaires and tests. In summary, the findings of the research were that: SME reviewer and discipline reviewers were effective in producing higher quality than the unreviewed material. However, rather interestingly, the domain student was shown to be the least effective in enhancing the material. The investigation also found that there was no significant difference in the quality of the material resulting from students' and lecturers' review. Furthermore, it was found that the media used to present the material was more useful when the quality of that media was perceived to be high. Finally 90% of the subjects were willing to study Web-based lectures as part of the course.

Developing web-based information systems for emergent organisations through the theory of deferred action : insights from higher education action researchRamrattan, Mark January 2010 (has links)
This investigation follows a philosophically interpretive approach on how the web developer developed Web-based Information Systems (WBIS) in a continuously changing higher education organisation. The investigation focused on emergence within the organisation and the resultant problems this gives the web developer in developing WBIS. The web developer used an action research methodology to investigate the emergent higher education organisation and its need for web-based aesthetics & internet speed. This approach was designed by the action researcher to assist both the web developer and manager in developing WBIS within emergent organisations. It is also designed to address a number of major constraining factors placed on the web developer. These included: time constraint, web-based aesthetics, internet speed, emergent aspects, methodology issues and accommodating planned organisational change. The interpretation of these constraining factors gained through the theory of deferred action enabled the action researcher to understand, interpret and create associations to explain the WBIS development process. The web developer had to defer the design process at several points because of unexpected events occurring in the organisation and take deferred action. As a result the Kadar Matrix was created and used by the web developer to manage the constraining factors. The Kadar Matrix has extended the theory of deferred action (ToDA) by implementing its constructs in the analytical tool, Kadar Matrix, for WBIS development. This is a modification of theory for practice. The research further identified that deferred action is necessary for the web developer in emergent organisations.

Faculty Attitudes Toward Residential and Distance Learning: A Case Study in Instructional Mode Preferences Among Theological Seminary FacultyScott, Benjamin G. 05 1900 (has links)
Twenty-first century learners have bought into a cafeteria-style mentality for obtaining higher education that learning should be available at the student's convenience. Institutions that ignore this postmodern trend will likely find their applicant pools dwindling along with significant reductions in entering class sizes. Students will simply choose other schools able to provide respected, accredited, and useful learning which fits their busy lifestyles. Since 1987, Dallas Theological Seminary (Texas), a 76-year-old graduate school of theology in the conservative, evangelical, free-church movement, has offered distance learning classes in both extension and print-based delivery models. Because the faculty plays a pivotal role in the successful or unsuccessful implementation of online courses (McKenzie, Mims, Bennett, & Waugh, 2000), the present study uncovered the attitudes of full-time, graduate theological faculty at Dallas Theological Seminary (DTS) regarding distance learning and the likelihood of faculty to adopt this delivery innovation.
Bruce Manning's (1976) Trouble-Shooting Checklist (TSC) for Higher Education Institutions was the instrument used in the study. The TSC is a nonparametric test designed to uncover differences between the observed and expected levels of acceptance that a department, program, or institution possesses regarding change toward distance learning in contrast to residential learning. The checklist's two major purposes are to provide an overall norm-referenced, predictive score estimating the organization's likelihood of adopting and implementing an innovation and to profile the strengths and weaknesses of an organization's environment (culture) relative to the adoption and implementation of innovations. Five scales provide a comprehensive understanding of the organizational climate, personality and leadership characteristics of participants, communication pathways within the organization, the degree of sophistication or expertise within the organization, and the receptivity of the students.
An official administration of the instrument was conducted involving all full-time faculty at DTS. Frequency counts, percentage distributions, and the chi-square goodness-of-fit statistic were used to analyze the data at the .05 alpha level. A summary of findings from the questionnaire was prepared indicating that significant change must take place within the faculty culture of DTS before distance learning innovations can be implemented.
