A Notation and Framework for Dialog Flow Control in Web Applications

Book, Matthias, Gruhn, Volker 12 November 2018 (has links)
The usability of web applications today often suffers from the page-based medium’s lack of intrinsic support for hierarchical dialog sequences mirroring the parent-child relationships between dialog boxes in window-based user interfaces. For multi-channel applications, an additional challenge lies in reconciling the device-independent business logic with the device-specific interaction patterns necessitated by different clients’ input/output capabilities. We therefore present a graphical Dialog Flow Notation that allows the specification of nestable dialog sequences for different presentation channels. These specifications serve as input for a Dialog Control Framework that controls the dialog flows of complex web applications.

Design and Evaluation of a Web-Based Programming Tool to Improve the Introductory Computer Science Experience

Tilden, Daniel Steven 05 June 2013 (has links)
Introductory computer science courses can be notoriously difficult for students, especially those outside of the major. There are many reasons for this, but the programming software itself may play a significant role.  To address this issue, we have developed Pythy, a web-based programming environment that allows students to write, execute, and test programming assignments from within the familiar interface of a web browser.  In this work, we discuss various aspects of Pythy in detail, including the rationale behind its design, the system architecture on which it is built, and the various functions offered by the software.  Next, we discuss an evaluation of Pythy\'s effectiveness during a programming course for non CS-majors offered at Virginia Tech, comparing it to a different software solution used in another programming course.  Results suggest that Pythy was successful in several target areas, including making it easier to get started with programming and providing feedback about program behavior.  Access log data from Pythy itself reveals details about how students used the system.  Finally, we conclude with a summary of key contributions and suggest some potential future directions for the system. / Master of Science

Development of a web application with focus on navigability : How is the usability on a web application for E-commerce of plants and cuttings affected by its navigability?

Christiansson, Johan, Graarud, Silje, Ivarsson, Lovisa, Liljedahl, Torsten, Nylén, Klara, Renqvist, Selma, Swedberg, Olof, Wissinger, Philip January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of this project was to determine how the experienced navigability of a web application affects its usability. In order to further investigate this, a web application called Sprouty was created, an easy-to-use web application that promotes individuals to buy and sell pre-owned plants and cuttings. The reasons for choosing this business concept are rooted in the marketing surveys that were first conducted before the webpage was developed. The results from this survey showed that there was a high demand among individuals to be able to buy plants online. This segment had previously been trading and selling plants through online social platforms such as Tradera, Blocket and Facebook Marketplace and sought a more structured platform to conduct these activities. Throughout the development of the web application, theories have been applied from peer reviewed articles regarding subjects such as layout, design, navigability and consumer behavior. To later test the efficiency of these theories and tools, two iterations of user tests were conducted by using the methods Lostness and Think aloud. In addition to this, a questionnaire was used for both tests. After the first iteration of user tests had been conducted, changes were made according to the feedback received in order to improve the user experience and the applications over- all functionality. To test the impact of these improvements, another round of user tests were conducted in order to measure how the changes impacted the navigability and experienced usability. The results showed that having a search engine, filter function and theory based layout improved the navigability of the "Shop" page of the web application. Lastly, the re- sults showed that having an intuitive design similar to other known websites is important to minimize confusion when performing tasks. This lead to the conclusion that the overall web application’s layout, design and filter functions all are important aspects impacting the experienced navigability and therefore the usability of the web application.

A Cloud-Based GSSHA Index Map Editor Utility for Watershed Decision Support

Anderson, Jocelynn Marie 01 July 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Preventing damages from flooding is critically important for city managers and planners.Efforts in protecting infrastructure from flooding are often coupled with building hydrologicmodels to provide predictions of what is likely to happen during storm events. As land usechanges, these models must be updated, which is more challenging with sophisticated models. Ateam of researchers from universities in Utah and Wyoming have been developing tools forwater management in the Intermountain West as part of a collaborative NSF research grantcalled CI-WATER. In particular, a free and open source web platform called Tethys has beendeveloped to support the development and hosting of hydrologic web applications. Tethys wasused to develop a prototype application that uses a GSSHA runoff model and allows users tochange land-use inputs to simulate the impact on a watershed for any type of land use change. The application also provides a method to run the edited model and produces a comparisonreport of before-and-after runoff and water depth as part of a decision-support framework.

Ökad måluppfyllnad med hjälp av applikationer / Increased Goal Acheivment with the help of Applications

Olsson, Benjamin, Gumpert Harryson, David, Eriksson, Erik, Sehlin, Filip, Bladh, Josefin, Sanfridsson, Julia, Li, Xueshan Mattias, Hidén, Oskar, Jonsson, Ville January 2019 (has links)
Human beings have always had goals which they have tried to reach. With the pace of the technological development, requests for digitalized solutions to problems which previously have been faced without technology increase. This study tests whether a web application could help users to achieve their goals. This was conducted by implementing three functions: Monetary incentive, publication and reminders. The functions’ design and implementations of these are supported by scientific theory. The purpose is to increase the number of users who fulfil their goals, thus helping people to achieve goals, with the help of the three implemented functions. In this study, a user test is conducted with the web application’s functions where the results are based on a test group. The user test results in both quantitative and qualitative data. The results of the study shows that a web application is a possible tool to increase the users’ chances of reaching their goals. This report also presents suggestions for improvement of the functions, which was clarified in the user tests.

Design and Implementation of Shop Floor Management Information System at BOSCH Rexroth AB

Li, Xin January 2017 (has links)
This master thesis is conducted as a conclusion of Master of Science degree in Production Engineering and Management at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. The focus of this thesis work is to make the work more convenient and improve production efficiency by building a management information system (MIS) thus replacing manual and decentralized information management mode on the shop floor. With the use of the computers in the office and tablets beside the machine of each work center on the shop floor, personnel can have access to the necessary information easily and quickly.   This management information system is built according to the actual production situation and needs in Bosch Rexroth AB in Mellansel. First, research on the production process and the management mode in the factory is conducted. Then, the form and the architecture of the system are decided. After thorough understanding and comparison, web application form and currently widely used Browser/Server (B/S) architecture are adopted. Finally, during the detailed design and system implementation process, databases and functional modules are developed. Microsoft Access is chosen as the database implementation. Microsoft Visual Studio.NET combined with C# language and IIS (Internet Information Service) is chosen as the application development tool. When conducting the user trial test on the shop floor, functions of this application system well meet the requirements, and associates can easily and quickly access the information. This application system can speed up the information flow in production, realizing more scientific, standardized and efficient management, which ultimately promotes the production and management of the enterprise.   This management information system realizes the following functions in a digitized way: 1. system security management: user registration, log in and permission settings; 2. drawings viewing; 3. instructions viewing; 4. maintenance recording and checking; 5. deviation reporting and processing; 6. process confirmation recording and checking.
