Automatic classification and metadata generation for world-wide web resources

The aims of this project are to investigate the possibility and potential of automatically classifying Web documents according to a traditional library classification scheme and to investigate the extent to which automatic classification can be used in automatic metadata generation on the web. The Wolverhampton Web Library (WWLib) is a search engine that classifies UK Web pages according to Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC). This search engine is introduced as an example application that would benefit from an automatic classification component such as that described in the thesis. Different approaches to information resource discovery and resource description on the Web are reviewed, as are traditional Information Retrieval (IR) techniques relevant to resource discovery on the Web. The design, implementation and evaluation of an automatic classifier, that classifies Web pages according to DDC, is documented. The evaluation shows that automatic classification is possible and could be used to improve the performance of a search engine. This classifier is then extended to perform automatic metadata generation using the Resource Description Framework (RDF) and Dublin Core. A proposed RDF data model, schema and automatically generated RDF syntax are documented. Automatically generated RDF metadata describing a range of automatically classified documents is shown. The research shows that automatic classification is possible and could potentially be used to enable context sensitive browsing in automated web search engines. The classifications could also be used in generating context sensitive metadata tailored specifically for the search engine domain.

An authoring tool for temporal intensional web pages

ITPerl is a web authoring tool that enables users to add temporal features to intensional web pages. ITPerl adds temporal macros to IPerl, a Perl interface to the C++ intense library. ITPerl combines temporal and default logic with intensional programming. ITPerl is an ideal solution for many time-sensitive and rapidly changing web applications. When developing a site, a user can add a temporal section to a webpage by providing different versions of it and associating each version with a time constraint. When a webpage is requested by a browser, a time point will be sent, as part of the request, to the ITPerl module. This time point is by default the current server time, but can be any time specified by the viewer. ITPerl will then compare the time point with each time constraint. If the time point satisfies more than one time constraint, then ITPerl will choose the best-fit version of the section by finding the most refined constraint. A html page that contains this best-fit version of this section will then be generated and sent back to the browser. ITPerl is easy to use. It provides the user with high level macros that have a simple syntax and that generate temporal codes as cgi files. This frees the user from having to write the complex temporal code himself.

Academics, practitioners and media agree that the topic of work-life balance is on the agenda and valued by the new business generation. Although Sweden might be considered a working friendly country, the management consultancy industry is not recognized to be the same. With an institutional perspective we will through a discourse analysis investigate the communication on Swedish management consultancies web pages in order to explore how consultancies relate to the work-life balance discourse. In this study we look at work-life balance communication as a continuum with abstract and concrete as two opposites where the level of concreteness will decide the level of responsibility dedicated from the organizations regarding employees` work-life balance. Our findings suggest that the discourse is mostly composed of abstract descriptive talk, which indicates that the communication exists as a legitimizing result of institutional pressures, and might not be an essential matter for the concultancies` everyday practice. A big part of the responsibility to achieve a work-life balance is put upon the individual employee and even though initiatives are presented they are seldom followed up by concrete targets or supported with results.

Google AMP and what it can do for mobile applications in terms of rendering speed and user-experience

On today’s web, a web page needs to load fast and have a great user experiencein order to be successful. The faster the better. A server side rendered webpage can have a prominent initial load speed while a client side rendered webpage will have a great interactive user experience. When combining the two,some users with a bad internet connection or a slow device could receive a pooruser experience. A new technology called Amplified Mobile Pages (AMP) wascreated by Google to help combat this issue.The authors of this report gives an answer to if Google AMP could maintain theuser experience while still contributing with a fast initial load speed for applica-tions. To do this, we conducted an experiment through creating a Google AMPapplication and compared it to another application using a different renderingengine called Pug. We have also measured the metrics: page load time, speedindex and application size between the two applications. To fully understandthe AMP format, the authors conducted a literature study, to further strengthentheir findings.Google AMP is a great technology but it can still grow to become better. Theformat could increase the speed of a website, however the same result could beachieved without AMP if focus was set on writing a fast application. From theexperiment, the authors concluded that Google AMP takes a great time to learnbecause of its own version of JavaScript through modules. The format also hasa different structure than standard HTML. From the tests, a smaller applica-tion does not favor the implementation of AMP. We did however derive fromthe experiment and the literature study that bigger applications could benefitfrom the perks of AMP and could therefor be a potential choice for old and newapplications.

This master's thesis deals with online marketing of the Language centre Laurus. The main objectives of this work are the assessment of the current state of online marketing of the Language centre Laurus, evaluation of the effectiveness of used communication channels, and recommendations leading to higher commercial success of the web pages. The theoretical part consists of three blocks. The first chapter is devoted to web sites, information architecture, usability and accessibility. The next chapter introduces the possibility of building traffic on web pages, and the third part consists of analysis of the competition. The following chapter includes methodology in which the used tools and procedures of the analysis are introduced. The practical part of the thesis includes introduction and analysis of the online marketing activities of the Language centre Laurus in that is the central part composed of the PPC advertising, SEO analysis and user testing of the web pages. The conclusion of the practical part includes the evaluation of the online marketing activities of the Language centre Laurus and recommendations for further procedures in the field of online marketing activities of the centre.

Finding Malformed Html Outputs And Unhandled Execution Errors Of Asp.net Applications

As dynamic web applications are becoming widespread nearly in every area, ASP.NET is one of the popular development languages in this domain. The errors in these web applications can reduce the credibility of the site and cause possible loss of a number of clients. Therefore, testing these applications becomes significant. We present an automated tool to test ASP.NET web applications against execution errors and HTML errors that cause displaying inaccurate and incomplete information. Our tool, called Mamoste, adapts concolic testing technique which interleaves concrete and symbolic executions to generate test inputs dynamically. Mamoste also considers page events as inputs which cannot be handled with concolic testing. We have performed experiments on a subset of an heavily used ASP.NET application of a government office. We have found 366 HTML errors and a faulty component which is used almost every ASP.NET page in this application. In addition, Mamoste discovered that a common user control is misused in several generated pages.

Στην εργασία αυτή αρχικά δίνεται ο ορισμός της έννοιας του e-banking, γίνεται μια σύντομη ιστορική αναδρομη και παρουσιάζεται η τρέχουσα κατάσταση στην Ελλάδα, στην Ευρώπη και στις ΗΠΑ. Αναφέρονται οι υπηρεσίες που προσφέρονται μέσω της Ηλεκτρονικής Τραπεζικής και τα πλεονεκτήματα και μειονεκτήματα που αυτή προσφέρει τόσο στους πελάτες, όσο και στις τράπεζες. Στη συνέχεια στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο γίνεται λόγος για την ευχρηστία των ιστοσελίδων, τι σημαίνει και πόσο σημαντική είναι για την σχεδίαση αυτών. Παρακάτω, στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο αναφέρονται κάποια κριτήρια για αξιολόγηση ιστοσελίδων και με ποιον τροπο πρέπει αυτές να σχεδιάζονται, βλέποντας τα πράγματα από την πλευρά του χρήστη αλλά και από την πλευρα του προγραμματιστη. Στο τέταρτο κεφάλαιο δίνονται τα κριτήρια για την αξιολόγηση Τραπεζικών Ιστοσελίδων και σύμφωνα με αυτά τα κριτήρια αξιολογούνται κάποιες απο τις σημαντικότερες Τραπεζικές ιστοσελίδες. Τέλος παρουσιάζεται ένα ερωτηματολόγιο για να δούμε την ικανοποίηση των πελατών από τις υπηρεσίες που προσφέρει το E-Banking. / In this work is initially given the definition of significance of e-banking, there is a short historical retrospection and is presented the running situation in Greece, in Europe and in the USA. The services that are offered via Electronic Banking are reported and also the advantages and disadvantages that this offers in the customers and in the banks. In the second chapter there are reasons for the web pages' usability, what means and how important is for the designing of those. Below, in the third chapter are reported certain criteria for evaluation of web pages and in what way should these be drawn, seeing the things from the side of user but also from the side of programmer.In the fourth chapter are given the criteria for the evaluation of Banking Web pages and according to these criteria are evaluated the most important Banking web pages. Finally is presented a questionnaire in order to see the customers' satisfaction from the services that the E-banking offers.

This thesis deals with the state of the web analytics in the marketing research of an academic institution. The theoretical part summarises the state of the (online) marketing in marketing activities of the academic institution and substantiates the importance of the analysis of the attendance of academic institution's web pages. It also submits basic conclusions for choosing the suitable analytic tool. In the applicative part the thesis analyses the traffic of web pages of Faculty of Management in 2010 and suggests actions leading to the higher satisfaction of web pages visitors and fulfilment of web conversion goals.
