Wh-constructions and the division of labour between syntax and the interfaces

Βλάχος, Χρήστος 01 February 2013 (has links)
The minimalist approach to natural human language argues that the syntax of a language L maps a certain structure to a certain form at PF and to a certain meaning at LF. With the above in mind, the ideal perhaps scenario, in terms of transparency, would be that the mapping between form and meaning would be one to one. In other words, there is as much form as there is meaning. This would further imply that the mapping between form and meaning is symmetric. The present thesis studies some aspects of the form and meaning of two kinds of wh-constructions in Modern Greek, i.e., questions and sluicing, and shows that the relevant mapping may not necessarily be one to one. With respect to questions, it is argued that the same form may correspond to more than one meaning. As regards sluicing, it is proposed that there is less form than meaning. On the face of the previous, the argument will be as follows. Syntax generates form, and restricts part of meaning, while additional aspects of meaning are facilitated by PF, regarding wh-questions, and LF, concerning sluicing. Finally, since PF contributes to meaning, LF sees PF, and vice versa.

Contribuições da pesquisa linguística sobre interrogativas para melhorias no cotidiano do afásico em seu ambiente familiar um roteiro / Contributions of linguistic research on interrogatives to provide improvements in the everyday household life of an aphasic patient a guide

Victória Cristin do Nascimento Haddad 31 March 2014 (has links)
Através dos resultados, constata-se a viabilidade de aplicação do roteiro proposto para futura aplicação por profissionais envolvidos com o tratamento e o estudo das afasias / Linguistic aphasiology has contributed to the verification of the Generative Theory assumptions and to the classification and description of linguistic features that characterize different types of aphasia. In this context, the problems with the production of complex structures, such as interrogatives, have been the research topic of many studies in several languages. Nevertheless, the benefits that such researches can offer to improve the daily lives of research patients are rarely addressed. In order to fill in this gap, the general aim here is to provide a research guide with language intervention suggestions for the speech therapy of an aphasic individual, by providing, through it, the improvement of his everyday household life. The working hypothesis is that by applying a linguistic research guide decentralized and non-vertical about the treatment of aphasia, it is possible to provide the improvement needed in the everyday household life of the patient with this deficit. To develop this research guide, the wh-questions are chosen as the language topic of this research. Despite this choice, the guide is developed with the possibility of being adapted to any other linguistic topic, which had been identified as problematic and susceptible to specific treatment. As a subsidiary goal, it is intended to develop a research model that seeks to contribute to the implementation of the principle of the indivisibility of teaching, research and extension one of the legal guiding principles of Brazilian universities. The methodology consists in using a case study with assessment tests, sentence training and interviews. The patient selected for the study is an aphasic with agrammatism. There is also the collaboration of members of his family and the staff of Centro de Recuperação do Paciente Afásico (CRPA a speech therapy center) in Universidade Veiga de Almeida (UVA). The results collected in tests and interviews point to an improvement in linguistic processing skills of wh-questions, regarding to the organization of phrases in the sentences and also to the selection of appropriate lexical items (wh-words). In addition, the results point to the progress in the patients daily life concerning the reduction of anxiety about his errors, the use of more options in communication and the increase of his independent communication skills. It is noted, due to the results, the feasibility of applying the proposed guide for future implementation by professionals involved in the treatment and the study of aphasia

Aquisição de perguntas-QU em português brasileiro em crianças com distúrbio específico de linguagem e em crianças com desenvolvimento típico / Acquisition of WH-questions in Brazilian Portuguese by children with specific language impairment and by typically developing children

Valezi, Maria de Lourdes Servilheira 11 May 2016 (has links)
The present study investigates the behavior of children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI) when producing the complex syntactic structure of Long Distance WH- Question and compares it to the production of the same structure by Typically Developing children (TD) at the age of language acquisition in Brazilian Portuguese. Data was taken from 2 groups of children (TD and SLI) aged from 5 to 11 years old. The elicitation method, implemented by Thornton (1990), was used for the experiment. 16 WH-questions were elicited from each child, i.e., 8 with object extraction (4 WH-bare and 4 WHICH+N) and 8 with subject extraction (4 WH-bare and 4 WHICH+N). Data obtained from the 2 groups showed that TD children as well as the SLI group master the complex WH-questions at the age of 5, however, SLI children produced this syntactic structure less frequently (36,65%) than the TD group (89,70%). SLI children certainly faced difficulties in producing it. However, this group of children produced WH-questions with object extraction (55,55%) as frequently as the production of the WH-questions with subject extraction (44,44%). Data analysis suggests that SLI children are able to deal with both syntactic structures (subject and object WH-questions) the same way. SLI children did not produce WH- in situ (a syntactic structure licensed in Brazilian Portuguese).

(OSTERMANN, 2016). (STIVERS, HAYASHI, 2010; WALKER; DREW; LOCAL, 2011; FOX; THOMSPON, 2011). / This master’s dissertation consists of a subproject of a larger study, entitled “A mobilização do saber e do fazer: episteme e deonticidade na fala-em-interação institucional e na conversa cotidiana”. (OSTERMANN, 2016). It investigates non-conformative answers in Brazilian Portuguese to polar questions and wh-questions, more specifically, specifying questions. All the consultations audio recorded were held at a public health system hospital located in southern Brazil and the interactions consist of genetic counseling, morphological and fetal ultrasound and echocardiography. The data analysis is based on a conversational analytical perspective. (SACKS; SCHEGLOFF; JEFFERSON, 1974). The objective of this dissertation is to analyze and describe the actions and implications of non-conformative answers provided by doctors to moderate and high pregnancy women. The results indicate that non-conformative answers and transformative, indirect and clausal responses present similar characteristics. (STIVERS, HAYASHI, 2010; WALKER; DREW; LOCAL, 2011; FOX; THOMSPON, 2011). However, transformative answers of specification and replacement engender greater interactive work for the respondent, as well as transformative answers of focus and presupposition. Additionally, we have identified a kind of transformative answer that has not been described in the literature yet: transformative answers that postpone the provision of the information. These kind of answers have been identified as answers to polar questions as well as wh-questions on the kind of specifying questions. We have observed that these answers occur in moments that reveal to be interactionally delicate, for instance, delivery of bad news, fetal death risk, and risks arising from medical procedures. We have concluded that transformative answers that postpone the provision of the information are a way to adjust the talk taking into consideration the interlocutor and the potential delicacy of the actions involved in that interactional sequence. Finally, we understand that transformative answers allow the interlocutor to resist to the constraints of the questions and also control the agenda of the interaction.

Mastering the question : the acquisition of interrogative clauses by Finnish-speaking children

Kangassalo, Raija January 1995 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to chart the development of interrogative syntax among Finnish-speaking children between the ages of 1 to 4 years living in Sweden. The material consists of language samples taken from eleven Sweden-Finnish children with Finnish as their first language. The data from the corpus have been compared with acquisition studies of Finnish-speaking children in Finland, with material from an adult-language corpus and with studies of children speaking other languages than Finnish. The first questions appearing in the corpus are wh-questions, on average at the age of 1.9 and one month earlier than yes/no-questions. Both wh-questions and yes/no-questions are produced by all children in the corpus, whereas disjunctive questions are used by only one child. Wh-questions comprise approximately two thirds of the interrogatives and yes/no-questions a third; only one disjunctive question is used. The older the child, the greater the proportion of yes/no-questions. The earliest wh-question words are tnikä 'what' nom. sg., missä 'where' and mita 'what' part, sg., used by one-year-olds. Kuka 'who' nom. sg., mihin 'where to' and miten 'how' all appear before the age of 2.6, and miksi 'why1, mista 'where from' and minkä 'what* acc. 1 sg. start being used before the age of three. The use of milloin 'when', kenen 'whose', minkä varinen 'of what color' and mitkä 'what' nom. pl. commences at the age of three. Other question words and question word forms are produced by a few children. Wh-interrogative clauses in this study have been divided into ellipses, on-clauses, V-clauses and Adnom-clauses. The ellipses and cm-clauses are acquired on average at the age of 1.9, V-clauses at 1.11 and Adnom-clauses at 2.3. The question words are used correctly for the most part, with the same references as in adult speech. Semantic misuse of mikä 'what' was detected in 2 % of the pronoun's occurrences; kuka 'who' is misused relatively often, 38 % of the time. The different case forms of the interrogative pronouns and adjectives are on the whole used correctly. One pronoun form susceptible to misuse is nom. sg. mikä 'what', often erroneously produced instead of some other case form. The interrogative adverbs are used according to adult norms almost without exception. The earliest yes/no-questions in the corpus are -kO-questions, starting on average at age 1.10; the use of -hAn-questions begins at age 2.5. Other yes/no-questions appear at a much later date. The first -kO-questions are neutral -kO-questions. Focused -kO-questions are acquired somewhat later on. The neutral -kO-questions have been divided into onko 'Is it?'-questions, Simple V+kO-questions, Aux+kO-questions and Neg+kO+V-questions; the various types of questions are acquired in that order. The interrogative clauses in the corpus have been categorized as information-eliciting questions, directive questions, conversational questions and expressive questions; their acquisition follows ibis order. / digitalisering@umu

Heads and adjuncts : an experimental study of subextraction from participials and coordination in English, German and Norwegian

Brown, Jessica M. M. January 2017 (has links)
In recent years, attempts to simplify the grammatical mechanisms used in syntax have led to proposals to reduce the relationships between elements in a sentence to relations between heads and complements, doing away with free adjunction. For the analysis of modifying relations one consequence has been the rise of analyses that use the properties of selecting heads to stipulate unexpected syntactic behaviour, such as the use of light verbs to derive transparency in complex verb constructions. This thesis shows that such accounts are empirically inadequate and argues that the relationship between heads and adjuncts provides a more empirically-satisfactory model of modifying relations, such as complex verb constructions, than one restricted to the selection relation between heads and complements in the syntax. In support of the adjunct relation, I show how a modular approach to adjuncts in which the position of adjunction is licensed in the semantics and long-distance dependencies are licensed in the syntax can provide a more unified account of subextraction from two separate types of island configurations, viz. asymmetric subextraction from coordination and subextraction from participial adjuncts, either than analyses involving complementation in the syntax (Borgonovo and Neeleman, 2000; Fabregas and Jiménez-Fernández, 2016; Wiklund, 2007), or hybrid analyses mixing processing filters with syntactic licensing of long-distance dependencies (Truswell, 2009, 2011). The first part of the thesis shows that Chomsky’s (2000; 2001) phase theory gives rise to blackholes in the specifier positions of phases from which movement cannot take place. I provide a theoretical account in terms of feature-licensing, where blackholes are formed by the impossibility of licensing at least one unlicensed feature on a phase head, and show how this account derives the distinction between canonical adjuncts from which subextraction is not permitted and subextraction from single event constructions in which subextraction is permitted. The section speculatively concludes with a demonstration of how blackholes might provide a unified analysis of islandhood in general. The second part of the thesis concentrates on the empirical phenomenon of subextraction from coordination and participial adjuncts. I report the results of a series of judgement experiments run in parallel across two sets of constructions, coordination and participial adjuncts, in three languages, English, German and Norwegian. The aim was to test whether acceptability of subextraction from within coordination and participial adjuncts varied depending on the aspectual or grammatical type of matrix predicate. The results show that acceptability of subextraction does depend on the type of matrix predicate. The crucial factor is intransitivity, partially confirming the bias towards unaccusatives in subextraction from participial adjuncts observed informally in Borgonovo and Neeleman (2000); Fabregas and Jiménez-Fernández (2016); Truswell (2011) whilst providing evidence against theoretical accounts that rely primarily on unaccusativity (Borgonovo and Neeleman, 2000; Fabregas and Jiménez-Fernández, 2016), primarily on aspectual distinctions (Truswell, 2007b) or primarily on agentivity (Truswell, 2009, 2011). Interestingly, the hierarchy in acceptability between the four types of matrix predicates stays constant across all three languages, despite both pseudocoordination and subextraction from within participials being ungrammatical in German.
