Title: Influence of physiotherapist intervention on shoulder muscular imbalance and movement stereotype in users of mechanical wheelchair. Objectives: The aim of the work is to find out to what extent a twelve-week strength training under the professional guidance of a physiotherapist can affect the users of mechanical wheelchairs (paraplegics) and their functional muscle tension in the shoulder area. Methods: This pilot multiple qualitative research took place from January to July 2021. Three paraplegics aged 39 to 46 participated voluntarily in the research. A kinesiological analysis was performed on each proband with an examination of the movement stereotype while riding a mechanical wheelchair. A diagnostic method with a tensiomyograph was performed for individual muscles of the shoulder girdle. Kinesological analysis and muscle measurements were performed before and after the intervention, which took place three times a week. Due to the unfavorable epidemic situation, it was carried out in the form of video transmission at home. The comparative method was used in the comparison section before and after the end of the physiotherapist's intervention during the training cycle of each proband. The obtained results were processed by the TMG 100 software, which meets the requirements for data...

Redesign of linear drive unit for wheelchair lifts for trainsMeyer-Dietrich, Simon January 2024 (has links)
The UPL-300 is a fully electric wheelchair lift for trains. Many wheelchair lifts for trains exist on the market but the vast majority are driven by hydraulics. Electric drive prevents potential hydraulic fluid spills and negates the need for special disposal of the fluid. The aim of this project was to improve this lift because it struggled to compete on that market and no longer met industry standards. This project first identified which areas of the UPL-300 needed improving and then worked on two of these areas, the linear drive unit (LDU) which enables the lift to go up and down and the wall brace which connects the linear drive unit to the wall of a train car. The results were a design document for the wall brace and a new design for the LDU. The wall brace design document aimed to simplify and expedite the design process of the customer specific wall brace. The new LDU cut the cost for the lift significantly and fulfilled the requirements of modern standards. The design of the new LDU is easily scalable and has the potential to be used as a linear actuator in other products. The improvement analysis, together with the other work done in this project, laid a strong foundation for future work to improve the UPL-300 fully electric wheelchair lift for trains.

Representation of people with physical disabilities in cinema: How do the stories get told? : A qualitative analysis of real-life inspired movie ‘Penguin Bloom’ in relation to the book by the same name and published interviews of the person whose story it is based on.Mishra, Surabhi January 2024 (has links)
In this thesis I study representation of disability and people with disabilities in cinema today by critically analyzing parts of a movie called Penguin Bloom for the way the main character’s identity and embodied experiences are represented and the possible reasons for that representation. Since the movie is based on a book that is in turn based on a real-life story of a person who acquired disability after sustaining an accidental fall, I have used certain quotes from the book and have also referred to a couple of published media interviews to support my arguments while analyzing the movie. To be able to critically view the movie for representation of people with disabilities, particularly relating to their identity, and embodied experiences, I have used theoretical frameworks of feminist disability studies, feminist visual theories, and feminist intersectionality to uncover how and why the main character in the movie, Sam Bloom’s – who is the person in a wheelchair – identity as a mother, and a disabled person, and her embodied experiences are expressed in the movie. The analysis reveals that the societal normative stereotypes relating to people with disabilities are reflected in the movie even though the movie has been created in close collaboration with Sam Bloom and the director of the movie has also kept the book as a reference point while working on the movie.

Serious Game-based Training for Improved Utilization of a Novel Temporalis EMG Interface for Controlling Powered WheelchairsMacDonald, Calvin 01 January 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a terminal neurodegenerative disease that leads to a lack of independent mobility. One solution uses a unilateral surface EMG (sEMG) interface on the temporalis muscle to provide autonomous control of a powered wheelchair. Limbitless Journey, an EMG-controlled serious game, intends to provide users with a virtual environment to train in before use in a real-world scenario. A recent study analyzed the effect of video game training on the use of sEMG systems on the forearm, showing significant improvement in the usage of the interface but no difference between Free Play and structured play. The study of interest emulates this investigation while extending its generalizability by using the temporalis muscle and incorporating Limbitless Journey as an alternative training method.
Participants first played another training game, Limbitless Runner’s Ring Challenge, as a pre-test, requiring participants to flex at different strengths to jump through hoops of various heights. Participants then completed serious game training, consisting of Journey, Runner’s Ring Challenge, or Runner’s Free Play modes. The pre-test was repeated to detect variation in the score. Two post-assessment surveys were utilized to determine perceptions of the video game training and the usability of the sEMG training system for video game control.

Master's thesis topic: Effects of the training with the krankcycle on wheelchair users Author: Bc. Ondřej Doubrava Branch of study: Physiotherapy Disertation Tutor: Mgr. Rostislav Čichoň, Ph.D. Year of Defense: 2014 This work was focused on training and strengthening of wheelchair users as a prevention of their health problems, a regulation of wrong physical and physiological mechanisms and an increase their fitness and motional skills. In this training the new instrument designed to strengthen the upper extremity and to improve the function of the cardiorespiratory system was used. This device is called krankcycle and its popularity has increased dramatically especially in the recent years. Therefore it became the main purpose of this work to determine whether completing a 12-week continuous training with krankcycle will lead to changes in monitored parameters evaluating physiological, physical and motional skills of subjects and thus identify the true value of its use. At the same time, we wanted to verify previously confirmed advantages and effectiveness of this exercise especifically for wheelchair users and reveal the krankcycle to them and the wider public as well. Values of body composition were measured in the biomedical laboratory of the UK FTVS by caliperation of four skinfolds method on...
