Negotiating whiteness: a discourse analysis of students' descriptions of their raced experiences at Rhodes University, Grahamstown,1 South Africa

Questions of the dominance of cultures of whiteness are pre-imminent issues in historically white South African universities. Even when historically white universities – such as Rhodes University, the site of study for this thesis – have a predominantly black student body post 1994, there are still reports of students experiencing such institutions as alienating and excluding due to the privileging of whiteness. This thesis draws on the significant role played by discourse in how the world is constructed and reconstructed, to better understand how whiteness may continue to be produced and reproduced in everyday interactions at a historically white South African university, and how some students may feel less at home than others within such institutions. The thesis seeks to answer the following research question: what discursive strategies do Rhodes University students use to describe their raced experiences, and what role do these strategies play in either reinforcing and or challenging a culture of whiteness? The thesis engages with and is informed by literature on whiteness as constitutive of both social aspects and phenotypical essence. Drawing primarily from discourse analysis tools, and from interviews with Rhodes University students completed between 2014 and 2015, the thesis argues that whiteness is far from being a zero-sum game of winners and losers. Rather, there are gradations of whiteness where speakers draw upon whatever capital (social, phenotypical or a combination of both) to attain the best possible outcome for themselves. The thesis therefore takes seriously the idea that whiteness is a social construct which can, through socialisation be acquired, lost and, in some cases, decanted partially into other vessels. Whiteness, the thesis argues, is ever incomplete and subject to change as the context changes in order to ensure that it remains associated with privilege, opportunity and power. If whiteness is not limited to white bodies only, as suggested by both the data and literature review, then it must be studied in relation to blackness as well. The interactional, inter-relational and inter-racial construction and use of whiteness both methodologically and conceptually is one of the key contributions to the field of whiteness studies made by this thesis. This open-ended, permanent work in progress approach to whiteness can be the beginning of conversations about race that are not necessarily bounded by phenotype or essence – especially in South Africa, where race and a fixation of rigid social categories continue to be a central part of how South Africans navigate and understand the world around them.

A diachronic analysis of the progressive aspect in Black South African English / C.M. Piotrowska

Current research into language change and evolution focuses on native varieties of English, Schneider’s (2007) settler strand, but we have little knowledge concerning diachronic changes in non-native varieties of English, Schneider’s (2007) indigenous strand. Such a theory must take into account language contact as well as theories pertaining to Second Language Acquisition. This dissertation describes the diachronic changes which occur in one feature of Black South African English (BSAE), namely the progressive aspect. Current synchronic research on BSAE suggests that the progressive aspect is overextended to include stative verbs. This dissertation aims to evaluate the value of this hypothesis, and determine whether there is evidence of this overextension in diachronic data. In order to observe instances of language change, a diachronic corpus of BSAE was complied. This corpus consisted of data from letters, fiction, and newspapers ranging from the 1870s until the 2000s. Using this corpus, analyses were performed in order to determine the frequency of progressive use, the distribution of aktionsart categories, and which temporal meanings were denoted by stative verbs and activity verbs used in the progressive aspect. These analyses were then repeated for data taken from the historical corpus of White South African English (WSAE), in order to ascertain whether changes in BSAE developed parallel to WSAE, or if it follows its own trajectory of change. One further analysis was conducted on BSAE: the aspectual categories of 71 state verbs were analysed in order to determine whether speakers of BSAE indeed do overextend the –ing progressive form onto stative verbs describing states and qualities. The results indicate that the frequency of verbs used with the progressive aspect increases for BSAE, but decreases for WSAE. The comparison of aktionsart distribution indicates that BSAE has a higher overall frequency of communication verbs and accomplishments, while WSAE has a higher frequency of activity verbs, verbs denoting the future, and stative verbs. Achievements are used as expected by both varieties. The analysis of the temporal meanings of stative verbs indicates that speakers of WSAE denote the prototypical short duration associated with the progressive aspect for 74.83% of the verbs, while BSAE uses an extended temporal meaning for 46.86% of the verbs, indicating that speakers of BSAE more likely to overextend the temporal duration of stative verbs than WSAE speakers. The temporal meanings for activities were the same for both varieties; the prototypical short duration is denoted by 77.83% of the total activities in BSAE, and 77.11% of the activities in WSAE. Nasal aperture shape and its application for estimating ancestry in modern South Africans

With both a heterogeneous population and a large number of unidentified persons in South Africa, an accurate method to estimate ancestry is needed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate variation in nasal aperture shape in black, white and coloured South Africans, using linear measures and geometric morphometrics (GM), the latter which includes both procrustes analysis (GPA) and elliptical fourier analysis (EFA). To test statistical significance among groups, discriminant function analysis (DFA) and principal component analysis (PCA) was used. A total of 310 (164 male, 145 female) crania of black, white and coloured South Africans were used. Thirteen standard landmarks, namely, glabella, nasion, nasale superior, dacryon, nasale inferius, alare, most inferior nasal border and subspinale, were digitised with a MicroScribe G2™ (Immersion: San Jose, CA). Five linear measures, nasion-dacryon angle (NDA), nasal breadth (NLB), nasal height (NLH), inter-orbital breadth (DKB) and nasion-dacryon subtense (NDS), were calculated. For EFA, photographs were taken in a frontal plane of skulls that had been positioned in the Frankfort horizontal plane on a craniophore. All classification accuracies for all groups were better than chance. Using linear measures and GPA, black South Africans classified 55-71% correctly, coloured classified 53-61% correctly and whites classified 85-95% correctly. Black and coloured South Africans demonstrated bell-shaped nasal apertures with nasal spines superior to the inferior nasal border. White South Africans had pear-shaped nasal apertures with a nasal spine inferior of the inferior nasal border. Using EFA black South Africans classified 62% correctly. While coloured South Africans only classified 39% correctly, which demonstrates high within group variability. Due to their unique historical development, large variation (heterogeneity) within the coloured group was expected. White South Africans had the highest correct classification accuracy of 85%. For all methods, misclassification rarely occurred between white and non-white (black and coloured) groups and most difficulties arose in distinguishing non-white groups from each other. High rates of misclassification was also noted between sex designations within a group, which suggests less or an absence of sexual dimorphism for these variables The distinct separation of white South Africans may reflect the mid-to late 20th century political and social separation of white and non-white groups in South Africa. Nasal aperture shape, alone, is less useful for separating groups such that all groups have relatively intermediate nasal aperture shapes; however the pinched nasal bone structure of white South Africans clearly separates them from the other groups. When using nasal bone and aperture landmarks, linear measures are as accurate as the modern geometric techniques in distinguishing groups. All methods are feasible to use in the estimation of ancestry on modern South Africans, with craniometry a sensible solution as the data can be rapidly collected, accurately analysed and compared to current reference samples.
