WIKILEAKS; en spark i rumpan för journalistiken? : Svenska journalister och Wikileaks

Lavesson, Emma January 2011 (has links)
Wikileaks is using the new technical solutions to mount big leaks, consisting of secret or sensitive information from the government, institutions and business. This might profoundly change the media reality and it certainly means both new opportunities and new challenges for traditional media; the conditions for the journalists, the sources and the news reporting are changing. In this thesis the relationship between Swedish journalists and Wikileaks has been the focus; they both affect each other but the conditions for this relationship is not yet clear. Clearly there is an interdependence, but who really is dependent on the other and to which degree they are dependent on each other is still a question without a given answer. The aim of this thesis has been to discern a new journalism, and how this responds to the theories of Public Journalism and Journalistik 3.0. The main aim has been to examine what Swedish journalist thinks about Wikileaks, what their attitude towards Wikileaks are,  if and how they think that Wikileaks have affected the Swedish journalism. The aim has also been to look at journalism and Wikileaks today and see if it can be said that they are influenced by Public Journalism or Journalism 3.0. To examine this a qualitative study have been used: ten journalists from four of Sweden’s largest newspapers have answered a list of questions. The answers then have been analyzed and compared to Public Journalism and Journalistik 3.0, these theories have been chosen with the help of John Pavliks thoughts about the technical development affect on journalism, and these are aslo used in the analyze. To put the analyze in context and give a understanding for why the aim of the thesis and the questions asked are relevant the first part of the thesis gives a background to journalism, the technical development and the Internet and how they have affected each other. As said this gives context to the empiric, but it is also used in the analyze and in the results, to answer the questions asked. The conclusions that could be drawn from this study is that Swedish journalists have a generally positive attitude to Wikileaks, especially concerning Wikileaks basic idea. They think it is positive that the organization is making it easier to access information that has been secret or sensitive and could help them reveal anomalies. But there is some cautions, concerning the big mass of information published and the scrutiny and screening this material is in need of, something that is expensive. The journalists do not think that Wikileaks yet have affected the journalism in any profound way; they say that the news production and the way they work still is the same. But the organization has shed light on shortcomings in how media is handling sources with digital information. Wikileaks also have caused the launch of other whistleblower-sights. In the future journalists might have a more filtering and screening role, and investigative journalism might be done from behind the desk. Special workgroups might work only with material from Wikileaks and other whistleblower-sights and cooperation between these organizations and journalists might become more frequent. Because Wikileaks allows the audience access to the source material they give the audience more power to influence the news reporting, it might also result that the source material more frequently is being published with the news articles. Regarding Public Journalism and the journalists it could be said that they, at least to some extent, have a similar view at the journalism as Public Journalism. Wikileaks can be seen as an expression of Public Journalism, as they counter too many of the ideals and cornerstones in the theory. Wikileaks also counter a lot of the characteristics found in Journalistik 3.0. According to the answers provided by the journalists it also could be said that a new journalism in large measure up to the characteristics in Journalistik 3.0.  Author: Emma Lavesson  Tutor: Anne-Marie Morhed Aim: The main aim of this thesis has been to examine what Swedish journalists think about Wikileaks, what their attitude towards Wikileaks are, if and how journalists think that Wikileaks have affected the Swedish journalism. Wikileaks ante el derecho estadounidense : ¿delincuencia informática, espionaje o ejercicio legítimo de la libertad de expresión y de prensa?

Campos Arlegui, Felipe Gonzalo January 2014 (has links)

Recursive Partitioning of Models of a Generalized Linear Model Type

Rusch, Thomas 10 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is concerned with recursive partitioning of models of a generalized linear model type (GLM-type), i.e., maximum likelihood models with a linear predictor for the linked mean, a topic that has received constant interest over the last twenty years. The resulting tree (a ''model tree'') can be seen as an extension of classic trees, to allow for a GLM-type model in the partitions. In this work, the focus lies on applied and computational aspects of model trees with GLM-type node models to work out different areas where application of the combination of parametric models and trees will be beneficial and to build a computational scaffold for future application of model trees. In the first part, model trees are defined and some algorithms for fitting model trees with GLM-type node model are reviewed and compared in terms of their properties of tree induction and node model fitting. Additionally, the design of a particularly versatile algorithm, the MOB algorithm (Zeileis et al. 2008) in R is described and an in-depth discussion of how the functionality offered can be extended to various GLM-type models is provided. This is highlighted by an example of using partitioned negative binomial models for investigating the effect of health care incentives. Part 2 consists of three research articles where model trees are applied to different problems that frequently occur in the social sciences. The first uses trees with GLM-type node models and applies it to a data set of voters, who show a non-monotone relationship between the frequency of attending past elections and the turnout in 2004. Three different type of model tree algorithms are used to investigate this phenomenon and for two the resulting trees can explain the counter-intuitive finding. Here model tress are used to learn a nonlinear relationship between a target model and a big number of candidate variables to provide more insight into a data set. A second application area is also discussed, namely using model trees to detect ill-fitting subsets in the data. The second article uses model trees to model the number of fatalities in Afghanistan war, based on the WikiLeaks Afghanistan war diary. Data pre-processing with a topic model generates predictors that are used as explanatory variables in a model tree for overdispersed count data. Here the combination of model trees and topic models allows to flexibly analyse database data, frequently encountered in data journalism, and provides a coherent description of fatalities in the Afghanistan war. The third paper uses a new framework built around model trees to approach the classic problem of segmentation, frequently encountered in marketing and management science. Here, the framework is used for segmentation of a sample of the US electorate for identifying likely and unlikely voters. It is shown that the framework's model trees enable accurate identification which in turn allows efficient targeted mobilisation of eligible voters. (author's abstract)

The Secret Writer

Chaffe, Tomas January 2013 (has links)
This essay reflects a particular method and way of working that I employ when undertaking artistic research. My artworks are rooted and develop from the situation I find myself in as an artist, the very context I exhibit the work within. I do this by trying to understand this position, both on the micro and macro scale. As an artist currently studying at—and subsequently exhibiting in relation to— Konstfack, I base my research with the physical manifestation of the school. An imposing building that was part of a huge headquarters and factory site for the telecommunication company, Ericsson, in south Stockholm. The title of my essay is from the translation of a unique German cipher machine, the Geheimschreiber, made known to me through enquiry into this site. Throughout the Second World War the German army used this machine to send highly encrypted military messages across Swedish telephone cables. Following one of the greatest accomplishments in the history of cryptography, a Swedish mathematician broke this German code and subsequently assisted in designing a deciphering machine on behalf of the Swedish Intelligence branch. This device, known as the App, was secretly developed and manufactured by Ericsson, possibly where I now study. In exploring the theme of secrets, this essay originates from an underpinning desire and subject of my work to reveal what is concealed or overlooked. Through researching and writing this essay I attempt to have a better understanding on the notion of secrets, in both the private and public realms. Introducing the artistic process and situation I am working from, I explore the central role that secrets play within society. In order to understand secrecy today I introduce the intertwined and associated contemporary debates of privacy, (both private and public) and transparency through such subjects as Google’s new privacy policy, mobile phone hacking, WikiLeaks and offshore banking.
