A política da escravidão na era da liberdade: Estados Unidos, Brasil e Cuba, 1787-1846 / The Politics of Slavery in the Age of Freedom: United States, Brazil and Cuba, 1787-1846Tâmis Peixoto Parron 19 June 2015 (has links)
Slavery expansion and its sudden overthrow in the Americas during the nineteenth century remain one of the major challenges to historical interpretation all over the world. While many specialists have approached this question through a national narrative, this study examines it by proposing an encompassing history of the politics of slavery in the United States, the Spanish monarchy and the Brazilian Empire. Its main purpose is to offer an analytical framework to discuss how the mutually conditioned processes of global economic conjunctures and political national compacts led to the rise and fall of slavery in the Americas.

Cultural imperialism and mass media development in the South Pacific Island States : Fiji - a case studyJaugietis, Ingrid, n/a January 1993 (has links)
With the onset of the independence of the Pacific
Island States, the role of the mass media and their
developmental processes began to be examined. This was
of particular interest due to the obvious lack of a
sufficient native media infrastructure to meet the
demands of an indigenous population who were being
introduced to a new world sphere and system.
The main problem of mass media development in the
Pacific lies in the fact that the nations in this area
are still relatively behind in the basic structures of
media participation. They lack technological knowledge
of the various forms of media, the basic training and
skills, and, moreover, the monetary means to address such
deficiencies in the media. The outcome of this
circumstance has been that Pacific media have become
increasingly dependent upon the Western, industrialized
nations such as the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
Such dependence on these foreign nations has given
rise to the question of 'cultural imperialism'. The
aforementioned countries have a large influence in the
Pacific through the unequal relaying of communication and
cultural products and in the ownership of mass media
agencies. This history of foreign based, imported
culture has manifested itself in increased urbanization,
social disruption, and greater commodity dependence and
consumerism in the Pacific.
This study will therefore be an attempt to analyse
the media development processes of the Pacific by using
Fiji as a case study. The critical analysis will come
from Wallerstein's World System perspective. Further, it
will be shown how Fiji's historical, involvement in the
'capitalist world economy', and her history of racism in
the political and communication aspects of her society
have helped shape her present media system. The
underlying premise of the argument, will be that these
factors have not been beneficial to achieving mass media
development based on self-sufficiency, nor on harmony
between the ethnic groups of Fiji.

A Critique Of World-system Inspired Historiography Of Transition To Capitalism In The Ottoman EmpireErkurt, Beyhan 01 February 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis examines world-system inspired historiography on transition to capitalism in the Ottoman Empire that has been developed as a criticism of the modernization theory that was dominant in the analyses of the Ottoman transformation. It is argued that although the world system inspired analyses overcome the restrictions imposed by the modernization analyses that are based on the deficiencies of Ottoman society compared to the West, they are also crippled with their own restrictions. Considering change as a product of external dynamics, and ignoring internal relations and potentials, it commits the same mistake of regarding the &lsquo / periphery&rsquo / as stagnant and shorn of any life, dynamics for creating change and therefore history. In this perspective, the peripheral societies such as the Ottoman society do not have the potential to be the actor of change but can only be subjected to it. Therefore, it is argued that the world-system inspired accounts fall short in understanding the process of change in the Ottoman Empire and the dynamics behind it. On that account, this thesis stresses the importance of studying the uneven but mutual relations between internal and external factors in order to understand social transformations that occur in and through the social relations and contradictions. There is, therefore a need to develop an account of the transition of the Ottoman Empire to capitalism with the help of such an approach.

Close world-system encounters on the western/central Canadian Arctic periphery: long-term historic Copper Inuit-European and Eurocanadian intersocietal interactionJohnson, Donald 10 September 2010 (has links)
This study examines long-term direct and indirect Historic Copper Inuit-European and European intersocietal interaction in the western/central Canadian Arctic periphery. Utilizing theoretical perspectives deriving from World-System Theory and moderate relativist orientations, and, embracing ethnographic, ethnohistorical and archaeological methodologies, the historic process by which the Historic Copper Inuit living externally to the modern capitalist World-System, came into contact with and were gradually incorporated within this expanding global system of interconnected states is examined. The process leading to the ultimate incorporation of the Historic Copper Inuit within the World-System is scrutinized through chronological stages and, utilizing two-views; the perspective of the Historic Copper Inuit mediating the penetration of the World-System, and through a perspective based on World-System orientations.

The objective of this work it to relate the Inernet Governance thematic with the World-System Analysis literature, focusing on how the Internet expansion influence the powers structures of International Relations. The research aims to contribute for the research agenda in Brazil about a better comprehension of the Internet Governance practice in the world. In this sense, the motivation of this research parts from questioning whom governs the Internet Governance. Witch groups of interest dispute and shape the different areas of Internet Governance and its architecture? How the real Internet Governance practice impact the relation between center and periphery in international relations? The methodology used, therefore, was a bibliography review on Internet development, its history, technical functions; documental analysis; and participant observation in forums and activities of organizations that constitutes the so called Internet ecosystem. As theoretical framework, the work use the Network Theory and System- World Analysis. The work introduce some notions about the Internet construction and evolution, and how it works, to to highlight the geographical contours that the architecture of the Internet has due to asymmetric concentration of control over some nodes. From this, presents the Internet as one of the synthesis between the development of new technologies and the resumption of a movement of enclosure of the intangible Commons, as it is both cause and consequence of this process which influences the reorganization of capitalism. At last, presents as final considerations some thoughts about the discussion accumulated along the dissertation discussion, suggesting a research agenda to study issues raised in this work.

Environmental Security In The Global Capitalist System: A World-systems Approach And Study Of PanamaFreeman, Mark Allen 01 January 2007 (has links)
The current global capitalist system is at odds with environmental protection and the protection of indigenous people that are directly linked to the land on which they live. In environmental security literature, many have argued that, theoretically and functionally, it is possible to link national security with environmental security. However possible this may be on paper, in practice, the global capitalist system prevents this from becoming a reality. Using a world-systems approach, this thesis will show that core countries seeking to expand capital by tapping into new markets, locating new sources of raw materials and even forming strategic military partnerships in periphery countries unavoidably degrade the natural environment and thus, adversely affect the lives and health of indigenous people. It is also the argument in this paper that the primary purpose of strategic military partnerships with periphery states, such as those formed in Panama and Colombia, are primarily meant to protect economic interests, thus perpetuating the capitalist cycle. The end result is that, while it is theoretically possible, through a different theoretical lens, to bridge the definitional and theoretical gulf between national security and environmental security, the reality of the system subverts this endeavor, and will continue to do so under its current configuration.
