Au XIXe siècle, le compositeur colombien José María Ponce de León (1845-1882) compose les premiers ouvrages lyriques écrits en Colombie. Une première étape nous conduit à retracer l’histoire de l’opéra dans le continent sud-américain. En nous attardant davantage sur le cas de la Colombie, nous mettons en relief l’importance des troupes itinérantes italiennes et espagnoles qui durant tout le XIXe siècle véhiculent la passion pour l’opéra romantique. Opéra ou zarzuela ? Les œuvres lyriques séduisent face à un répertoire local caractérisé par la miniature musical. C’est dans ce contexte que naît Ponce de León, dont nous présentons une biographie. Son opéra « Ester »(1874), sa zarzuela « El Castillo misterioso » (1876) et son grand opéra Florinda (1880) constituent un corpus innovant que nous avons étudié avec détails, à la lumière d’un opéra qui se veut national, alors que la nouvelle république colombienne cherche la construction d’une identité nationale. / José María Ponce de León (1845-1882) is the first Colombian composer who wrote operas in Colombia. In the purpose to understand how the opera arrived to America, we first studied the history of the opera in South-America during the time of the Spanish Colony. The case of Bogota shows the importance of the European lyrics companies who were traveling through the continent. Their show is an impressive new art-expression in a world of the musical miniature. Ponce de Léon wrote the first operas in Colombia: “Ester” (1874), the zarzuela “El Castillo misterios” (1876) and the Opera Mayor Florinda (1880). We have studied his works and his life in detail. His musical production is articulated with the rise of a new Republic. Is his opera a national opera? This is the main question, while the intellectuals of his time tried to construct a national identity.
