The adjunctive use of the developmental role of bibliotherapy in the classroom : a study of the effectiveness of selected adolescent novels in facilitating self-discovery in tenth graders

The purpose of the study was to determine whether tenth grade adolescents can exhibit the three goals of bibliotherapy, identification, catharsis, and insight, thus achieving self-discovery, through reading contemporary adolescent novels and discussing them with their English teacher on an individualistic basis. Six subjects, four girls and two boys, were selected from two tenth grade English classes at Anderson High School, Anderson, Indiana. The students were given two literary attitude surveys: "Questionnaire: Responses to Feminine Characters in Literature" and "Literary Transfer and Interest in Reading Literature," as pre-tests and post-tests. The six subjects, selected on the basis of average or better grades as well as demonstrated maturity and responsibility, read' Confessions of a Teenage Baboon by Paul Zindel, Don't Look and it Won't Hurt by Richard Peck, The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katharine Paterson, My Darling, My Hamburger by Paul Zindel, The Pistachio Prescription by Paula Danziger, and That Was Then, This Is Now by S. E. Hinton. The students discussed each book in a specific order in a private, tape-recorded session with their English teacher, the researcher, who asked predetermined questions over each book. After the tape-recorded discussions were transcribed, the responses were identified as examples of identification (ID), catharsis (C), and insight (IN).Findings1. Identification with fictional characters can lead to insights by adolescents not only about the characters but also about their own personal lives.2. The number of insights did not increase as more books were read.3. In this study the girls appeared to achieve more identification and to gain more insights than the boys.4. Catharsis is the one goal of bibliotherapy less frequently experienced, but the more an adolescent becomes emotionally involved in a book, the more likely he is to experience catharsis.5. Adolescents can achieve self-discovery if they are given the opportunity to discuss fictional characters and situations as related to their own concerns with teachers who can take the time to do so.Conclusions1. Bibliotherapy on an individual basis with adolescent novels not only has emotional and personal benefits but also academic value in that students will respond more readily and responsibly to literature within the realm of their own experience than to the traditional literature of classroom anthologies.2. Emotional maturity and self-discovery can occur if educators are willing to individualize and humanize education.3. Bibliotherapy with adolescent novels can engender feelings of mutual trust and respect between teachers and their students, who need the opportunity to discuss their feelings and problems with adults whom they perceive care about them.4. The individualized approach to bibliotherapy can provide more thorough and genuine responses, leading to significant conclusions.

Assim, O objeto deste estudo não é o texto de Machado de Assis propriamente dito, mas a sua recepção pelo aluno leitor. O trabalho toma a estética da recepção da escola alemã de Constança como referencial teórico básico da pesquisa, além de se valer complementarmente de estudos do campo da sociologia da leitura e da literatura afinados com essa corrente teórica. Os principais objetivos desta investigação são o de descrever e analisar a recepção dos dois romances de Machado de Assis - de estrutura bem diferente - pelo conjunto de estudantes observado. Conceitos fundamentais da Estética da Recepção estão na base deste estudo: concretização, distância estética, efeito/recepção, emancipação, estrutura de apelo, experiência estética, horizonte de expectativas e identificação, entre outros. Procura-se examinar a leitura das obras pelos alunos considerando a atenção que voltam à linguagem das obras a elementos estruturantes da narrativa (enredo, personagens, tempo, espaço, narrador, questões de verossimilhança) mediante os quais os leitores demonstram as suas impressões e seu julgamento crítico das obras. A análise dos dados confirma uma hipótese importante levantada antes das entrevistas, realizadas em situação escolar não rotineira - a de que a motivação para a leitura de uma obra literária é um dado fundamental a se considerar. Além disso, foi possível observar leituras bem particulares próprias da fase de um jovem leitor sem grande repertório literário, em que se destacam dificuldades enfrentadas no âmbito da linguagem... / Resumè: La réception de Don Casmurro et Mémoires posthumes de Brás Cubas par 107 étudiants de 2e année de l'école secondaire dans quatre écoles de l'Etat et un particulier dans la ville de Londrina - PR, ainsi que l'analyse des lectures des élèves par le biais d'entretiens individuels / collectifs maquillage l'objet de cette recherche. L'objet de cette étude est pas le texte Assis Machado lui-même, mais sa réception par l'étudiant de lecteur. Cette recherche sur le terrain de la littérature sociale prend la réception esthétique de l'école allemande de Constance comme référence théorique de travail, et les références traitant de la lecture, la littérature et la théorie littéraire. L'objectif principal de cette recherche est d'observer la réception de Machado de Assis fonctionne et l'effet sur le lecteur pour votre lecture. Le déroulement de l'objectif principal impliquent au moins deux: d'abord, observer et analyser la lecture des élèves par rapport aux concepts fondamentaux de l'esthétique de la réception: Livraison, la distance esthétique, effet, l'émancipation, la structure d'appel, l'expérience esthétique, les attentes Horizon et d'identification, par lequel il semble que la proposition de la théorie. Deuxièmement, examiner la lecture des ouvrages par les étudiants qui envisagent la langue et narratives éléments (intrigue, personnages, temps, espace, probabilité et narrateur) à travers laquelle les lecteurs démontrent ses impressions et sa lecture critique des œuvres. Die leesbelangstelling en leesgewoontes van Afrikaanssprekende tienderjariges in Pretoria

The growing concern that teenagers don't read, led to this study. The study is preceded by an explanation of aspects in which the teenager develops, the value of reading and the influence of the environment on the teenager's utilisation of leisure time. In the study, a total of 478 Afrikaans-speaking pupils from grade seven to grade ten completed different questionnaires, whereby their reading interests and habits were determined. Some of the important findings of the study are: - although teenagers indicated their preference of fiction reading as that of horror and ghost stories, the romantic Sweet Valley series is read the most; - they prefer main characters who have the same religion and interests as they have; - cartoons and the periodical, Huisgenoot, are popular with all age groups; - books in Afrikaans are seemingly not popular; - the title and blurb are "decisive in the choice of a book; - teenagers consider it as normal that so little time is spent on reading; A few recommendations are made at the end of the study. / Die groeiende kommer dat tienderjariges nie lees nie, het tot die studie gelei. Die studie is voorafgegaan deur 'n uiteensetting van die aspekte waarvolgens tienderjariges ontwikkel; die waarde van lees en die invloed van die omgewing op tienderjariges se vryetydsbesteding. In die studie het 'n totaal van 478 Afrikaanssprekende leerlinge vanaf graad sewe tot graad tien verskillende vraelyste ingevul, waardeur hul leesbelangstellings en -gewoontes vasgestel is. By a reading comprehension activity, it is possible to verify what they understand from the reading and how they use their inferences as reading strategy. 75 young apprentices took part in the research, and three tools were employed for the data collection: a questionnaire, two texts, each one with ten questions and multiple-choice answers, and eight sentences with questions that required inferential reasoning. In the analysis, a qualitative data evaluation was fulfilled, which allowed to verify a low level of young people's interest in reading, as well as to ascertain that many of them present comprehension difficulties and use less inferences in the text comprehension activities. Beyond this, it is possible to identify a low level of reading comprehension, mainly in respect of the inferring ability. Thus, the results suggest the necessity and the importance of schools to offer bigger reading development opportunities, ensuring as the alphabetic system proficiency as the inferential reasoning development, especially in high school / Nessa pesquisa, utilizamos uma abordagem cognitiva objetivando verificar o perfil, quanto à atividade de leitura, de um grupo de jovens aprendizes trabalhadores, os quais apresentam um preocupante déficit de compreensão em leitura e raciocínio inferencial. Por meio de uma atividade de compreensão de texto verificamos o que compreendem daquilo que leem e de que forma usam as inferências como estratégia de leitura. Participaram da pesquisa 75 jovens aprendizes, e para a coleta de dados utilizamos três instrumentos: um questionário, dois textos, sendo que cada um contém dez perguntas com respostas de múltipla escolha, e oito frases com perguntas que exigiam raciocínio inferencial. Na análise, realizamos uma avaliação qualitativa dos dados, o que nos permitiu verificar um nível baixo de interesse dos jovens pela leitura, assim como constatar que muitos deles apresentam dificuldades de compreensão durante a leitura e usam pouco as inferências nas atividades de compreensão de texto. Além disso, identificamos que há um nível baixo de compreensão de leitura, principalmente no que diz respeito à habilidade de inferir. Dessa forma, os resultados sugerem a necessidade e a importância de as escolas oferecerem maiores oportunidades de formação em leitura, garantindo tanto o domínio do sistema alfabético quanto o desenvolvimento do raciocínio inferencial, sobretudo no ensino médio
