An exploration of the female adolescent learner-educator interaction within the youth care centreVan Tonder, Rene 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEd)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study aims to explore and describe the Youth Care learner's relational interaction with her educators in order to establish what could enhance this relationship with her educators. The specific focus is on the female Youth Care learners' experiences of this relationship and how they impact on the learners' sense of well-being within a particular Youth Care Centre. The participants for this study consisted of eight female learners from the Youth Care Centre. The research methods which were used are semi-structured interviews with each participant. I also conducted focus groups with educators which resulted in confirmation of data. The analysis of the interview guides' data provided themes which are discussed according to certain categories that emerged in the data produced during the interviews.
The study shows that various factors such as lack of empathy, trust, respect and understanding impact on the educator-learner relationship within a Youth Care Centre. These factors directly impact on Youth Care learners' well-being. The study shows that the presence of these factors could be used to decrease the number of Youth Care learners who have sad or hopeless feelings. The Youth Care learners also made suggestions on how this relationship with their educators could be enhanced. Thus, it can be concluded that Youth Care educators who possess superior competency in the different realms of emotional skills have many advantages that lead to mutually satisfying and responsible interpersonal relationships. This research therefore calls for a greater focus on the development of the emotional skills of Youth Care educators, which could lead to better interactions with their learners. I conclude by suggesting that further studies be conducted to assess the emotional skills of Youth Care educators and to determine in which realm they need improvement. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die ondersoek is daarop gemik om die aard van die jeugsorgleerder se verhouding met haar opvoeders te eksploreer en te beskryf met die doel om vas te stel wat gedoen kan word ten einde hierdie verhouding te verbeter. Die spesifieke fokus is op hoe jeugsorgleerders hierdie verhoudinge ervaar en die uitwerking daarvan op die leerders se verhouding met en gehegtheid aan hulle opvoeders in 'n besondere Jeugsorgsentrum. Die deelnemers aan die studie was agt vroulike leerders van die Jeugsorgsentrum. Die navorsingsmetodiek het bestaan uit semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude wat op elke deelnemer toegepas is. Opvoeders was ook by fokusgroep besprekings betrokke, wat gelei het tot bevestiging van my data. Data-analise van die vraelyste het die navorser voorsien van temas wat bespreek is volgens kategorieë wat na vore gekom het tydens die proses van dataversameling gedurende die individuele onderhoude.
Die ondersoek toon dat 'n verskeidenheid faktore soos gebrek aan empatie, vertroue, respek en begrip 'n beduidende invloed op opvoeder - leerder verhoudinge binne 'n Jeugsorgsentrum uitoefen. Hierdie faktore het 'n direkte invloed op jeugsorgleerders se welsyn. Die ondersoek toon dat die aanwesigheid van hierdie faktore aangewend kan word om die aantal leerders te verminder wat gevoelens van hartseer of hopeloosheid ervaar. Die jeugsorgleerders het ook voorstelle gemaak wat gedoen kan word om hierdie verhoudinge te verbeter. Daar kan dus afgelei word dat dit voordelig is vir opvoeders van Jeugsorgsentrums om oor superieure emosionele vaardighede te beskik, omdat dit wedersyds bevredigende en verantwoordelike interpersoonlike verhoudings tot gevolg het. Hierdie navorsing vra dus vir 'n groter fokus op die ontwikkeling van die emosionele vaardighede van opvoeders, wat kan bydra tot verbeterde verhoudings met hulle leerders. Ten slotte wil ek verdere navorsing op hierdie terrein aanbeveel ten einde die emosionele vaardighede van die opvoeders te bepaal en om vas te stel op watter gebied hulle kan verbeter.

Previous issue date: 2018-04-02 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Understanding the relation between black and poor youth from the periphery with leisure and culture, through the artistic and cultural universe of funk is the purpose of this study. In this way, the discussion regarding the constitution and current reality of the periphery will be privileged, considering the racial questions as a structuring element of Brazilian capitalism, and also the implantation of the neoliberal agenda in Brazil, a project continued by the PT governments, during the thirteen years they remained in power. From such analysis, a debate about the daily life of the youth of the periphery will be proposed, and elements that amplifies the reflection over the cultural expressions from young people, entering into the diversity of funk’s universe, ranging from the style "ostentação" and "proibidão", until the "funk consciente" and the one that sings the resistance of transsexual women. The concept of youth and the elements for a reflection over work’s educational dimension of the Social Worker next to periphery’s youth also will be discussed. The dissertation also contemplates an analysis of the realization of a Focus Group with young people at the city of Itapevi, who presented several considerations about the daily life from the young people and from the funk universe / Compreender a relação estabelecida entre a juventude negra e pobre da periferia e o lazer e a cultura, por meio do universo artístico-cultural do funk é o objetivo deste estudo. Nessa direção, serão privilegiadas a discussão referente à constituição e realidade atual da periferia, considerando a questão racial como elemento estruturante do capitalismo brasileiro, bem como a implantação da agenda neoliberal no Brasil, projeto continuado pelos governos petistas, nos treze anos em que permaneceram no poder. A partir de tais análises, será proposto o debate sobre a vida cotidiana dos jovens da periferia, e elementos que qualificam a reflexão sobre as expressões culturais juvenis, adentrando a diversidade do universo do funk, que abrange desde a vertente “ostentação” e “proibidão”, até o “funk consciente” e aquele que canta a resistência das mulheres transexuais. Também serão debatidos o conceito de juventude, bem como os elementos para a reflexão da dimensão educativa do trabalho do assistente social com jovens da periferia. Perceptions about schooling and substance abuse treatment success from court mandated adolescent malesMazzotta, Margaret Ann 12 December 2003 (has links)
Many youth are able to be successful in the traditional school setting.
Large numbers are not successful. Dropout rates are alarming. There is little
research that examines the drop out problem from the perspective of the youth.
Traditionally programs that are designed to help have been designed by adults.
This qualitative study focused on the voices of youth. Participants in this study
were male clients aged fifteen to seventeen who were adjudicated and court
mandated to receive treatment in a drug treatment center. All of the
participants had a history of delinquency and poor academic achievement. They
had dropped out of school prior to entering the treatment program.
This qualitative study addressed two questions:
1. What are the factors that prevent at-risk youth from being successful
in school?
2. What can schools do to help these youth be successful at school?
This study provided information about what schools could have done to help
these youth be more successful. It also looked at their current academic success
in the treatment program as a possible model to help other youth.
Five youth volunteered to participate in the study. All interviews were
confidential. Interviews were also conducted with a probation officer, program
administrator, teacher, and a parent that had a youth in the program in order to
triangulate results. The voices of students supported the literature with respect
to the factors that contribute to students being at risk for delinquency and
dropping out of school. Some of these factors include issues surrounding anger
management, academic issues, nurturing at school, family situations, school at a
treatment center, hiring teachers, childhood experiences, drug use, obtaining
drugs, crime and drugs, treatment programs, dual diagnosis, communication
and issues surrounding success and failure. The strength of this qualitative
research project lies in the fact that the real voices of students did support the
quantitative literature in this field. / Graduation date: 2004

Evaluation of an urban environmental education program to assess attitudes and knowledge of high school students toward white-tailed deerTegt, Jessica Lynn 30 April 2011 (has links)
The main objective of this study was to establish a universally functional evaluation process for environmental education (EE) materials that can increase appropriate educational program application and resultant efficacy among users of all skill levels and disciplines, specifically those wildlife-related. Additionally, this research investigated capability of an EE program to alter preconceived high school student attitudes and knowledge toward urban white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) across varying demographics. I evaluated systematically a pre-produced urban wildlife classroom program, Living with White-tailed Deer (LWWTD), and measured student understanding of associated deer issues pre- and post-program. Using a detailed framework based upon the Guidelines for Excellence outlined by North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), I created an instrument to identify EE programs indicative of high merit. During the 2007-2009 school years, trained classroom educators (n = 72) from 13 states were recruited to participate with their students (n = 1,274) in the 3-5 day LWWTD program and asked to critically assess it using my evaluation instrument. Teachers also administered attitude and knowledge assessments to their students. Teacher opinion toward the program was found to be highly favorable ( = 3.4/4) and was confirmed by significant increases in student knowledge before and after the program (P < .001). Regional differences in teacher response were found, but did not affect student performance. Teachers indicated that the Guidelines for Excellence are a meaningful tool in developing evaluative measures. Weak program components such as applicability to differing cultures were isolated using the evaluation instrument while strong components such as instructional soundness were highlighted. Pre- and postprogram student responses were correlated to demographic variables and differed significantly among races, gender, and urban or rural residency. Student experiences revealed also differences in attitude and knowledge of varying constructs relating to urban deer issues. An increase in knowledge following the LWWTD program was found across all demographic and experience variables suggesting high effectiveness regarding learning. Student attitudes following the LWWTD program showed an increased acceptability of lethal deer management techniques regardless of demographics, experience, or pre-program beliefs. These results suggest that effective EE can transcend predetermined beliefs.

attention, scrutiny and unprecedented acceptance and inclusion into mainstream culture. However,
despite advances and society's ever increasing tolerance toward sexual minorities, many individuals
with alternative sexual orientations remain fearful of disclosing their sexuality. Consequently,
adolescents often hide their alternative sexual orientation from others or disclose to only a select
few. Adolescents with alternative sexual orientations face unique challenges, such as the coming out
process, during which they must recognise, explore, define and disclose their orientation in a way
that heterosexual individuals need not. Disclosure of an alternative sexual orientation is a struggle
for most lesbian, gay and bisexual youth due to fears of discrimination, ostracism and violence from
others. Despite a growing body of scientific literature on homosexuality in general, little is known
about the disclosure process and its impact on an adolescent. This study seeks to help fill the gaps
by giving voice to the adolescent by exploring the experience of disclosure. Furthermore, this study
seeks to provide insight and knowledge to mental health professionals to aid adolescent clients
throughout the disclosure process.
This study's research methodology can be described as qualitative research which is embedded
within an interpretive/constructivist paradigm. Purposive sampling was used to select five male and
five female research participants. The methods of data collection that were employed comprised
semi-structured individual interviews and reflective notes. Furthermore, content analysis was used
to analyse the data.
The findings of this study suggest that many unique issues besides the normative challenges that
lesbian and gay adolescents share with heterosexual adolescents characterise their development.
This research study suggests that there are several milestones that are characteristic of lesbian and
gay identity development, the negotiation of which may hinder development in other areas. The
male and female participants described a similar trajectory to coming out, consistently identifying a
feeling of being different during early childhood which resolved into an awareness of same-sex
attraction that concluded in their self-labelling as gay or lesbian. The findings of this study suggest
that the process of disclosure is continuous and emergent. The reactions of parents ranged from
extreme outrage and expulsion from the home to support and acceptance of the fact that their child
had disclosed his/her homosexual orientation. From the findings of this study it would appear that the participants' parents were initially ill prepared and unable to support their child during his/her
disclosure. The participants voiced various strategies to support an adolescent in the position of
disclosing to family. There are several implications of this study's findings for mental health
professionals working with lesbian, gay and bisexual adolescents and youth. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die aandag, noukeurige betragting, aanvaarding en ongekende insluiting binne die hoofstroom van
die kultuur wat tans deur seksuele minderheidsgroepe ervaar word, is ongekend in die geskiedenis.
Ten spyte van vooruitgang en die toenemende verdraagsaamheid teenoor die seksuele minderheid in
die samelewing, vrees diegene wat 'n alternatiewe seksuele oriëntasie toon steeds om hulself bloot
te stel. Gevolglik hou adolessente dikwels hul alternatiewe seksuele oriëntasie geheim of onthul
hulle dit slegs aan 'n uitgesoekte paar persone. Adolessente met 'n alternatiewe seksuele oriëntasie
kom op 'n wyse wat nie vir heteroseksuele individue nodig is nie, voor unieke uitdagings soos die
openbaarmaking van hul oriëntasie te staan wanneer hulle dit moet erken, verken, definieër en aan
die moet lig bring. Die erkenning van 'n alternatiewe seksuele oriëntasie plaas die meeste lesbiese,
gay en biseksuele jeugdiges voor 'n stryd vanweë die vrees vir diskriminasie, verstoting en geweld
deur andere. Ten spyte van die algemene toenemende hoeveelheid wetenskaplike literatuur oor
homoseksualiteit, is daar weinig kennis van die verklaringsproses en die impak daarvan op 'n
adolessent. Hierdie studie poog om die ervaring van verklaring te ondersoek om die adolessent se
stem te laat hoor en sodoende die kennisgaping te oorbrug. Verder poog die studie ook om insig en
kennis aan professionele persone binne die gebied van die geestesgesondheid te bied, om hulle in
staat te stel om adolessente kliënte met die verklaringsproses by te staan.
Die navorsingsmetodologie wat vir die studie gebruik is, kan as kwalitatiewe navorsing binne 'n
interpretiewe/konstruktiwistiese paradigma beskou word. Doelgerigte toetsing is ingespan om vyf
manlike en vyf vroulike deelnemers vir die navorsingspoging te werf. Data is met behulp van
semigestruktureerde onderhoude en reflektiewe notas ingesamel. Verder is inhoudsanalise gebruik
om die data te ontleed.
Die bevindings van die studie dui daarop dat die ontwikkeling van gay en lesbiese adolessente
benewens die normatiewe uitdagings wat deur hulle sowel as heteroseksuele adolessente
aangespreek moet word, ook deur unieke kwessies gekenmerk word. Hierdie navorsingstudie
suggereer dat verskeie mylpale kenmerkend is van die ontwikkeling van lesbiese en gay identiteit
en dat die bewerkstelliging daarvan ontwikkeling in ander areas kan stuit. Die manlike en vroulike
deelnemers aan die studie het langs soortgelyke bane tot die verklaring van hul oriëntasie gekom en
het die gewaarwording dat hulle tydens hul vroeë jeug reeds 'n gevoel dat hulle anders was
konsekwent geïdentifiseer. Hierdie gevoel het tot 'n bewustheid van die aantrekking van dieselfde geslag ontwikkel en tot self-etikettering as gay of lesbies gelei. Die bevindings van die studie stel
voor dat die verklaringsproses voortdurend en opdoemend van aard is. Die reaksies van ouers
wissel vanaf uiterste verontwaardiging en verdrywing vanuit die tuiste tot ondersteuning en
aanvaarding van die wete dat hul kind sy/haar homoseksuele oriëntasie verklaar het. Die bevindings
laat blyk ook dat die ouers van die deelnemers aanvanklik gebrekkig voorbereid was en nie in staat
was om hul kind tydens die verklaring te ondersteun nie. Die deelnemers het verskeie strategieë
voorgestel vir die ondersteuning van 'n adolessent wat hom/haar op die punt van hierdie verklaring
aan die gesin bevind. Die studie se bevindings het ook verskeie implikasies vir professionele
persone wat binne die gebied van die geestesgesondheid met lesbiese, homoseksuele en biseksuele
adolessente en jeugdiges te doen het.

Connecting to Nature, Community, and Self: A Conservation Corps Approach to Re-engaging At-Risk Youth in Science EducationLinden, Sara Jo 09 June 2016 (has links)
The social and environmental challenges of the coming decades will require that individuals possess environmental literacy: the understanding of natural systems combined with a sense of care for the earth, and the confidence and competency to act on its behalf. At the same time, disengaged youth need education environments that foster belonging and promote affective outcomes. The youth conservation corps model provides a natural context for engaging academically at-risk youth in environmental science education, while fostering connection to nature and student self-efficacy in ways that are experiential, relevant, and relationship-based. The focus of this study was a conservation corps program that integrates habitat restoration fieldwork and environmental science curriculum. The participants of this study were eight high school seniors who participated in the program for credit toward their high school diplomas. Data were collected through both quantitative and qualitative measures. Students completed a pre-test to assess their understanding and application of conceptual knowledge in ecosystem relationships and biodiversity. Upon completion of a six-week curriculum, they completed a post-test assessing knowledge in the same areas, two retrospective pre-post surveys measuring connection to nature and self-efficacy, and a post-evaluation measuring affective outcomes. Individual interviews were conducted in order to provide further insights and to identify elements of the program that contributed to positive outcomes. Results showed statistically significant increases in all outcome areas as well as positive student evaluation of affective outcomes. The outdoor and experiential components of the program were found to contribute most significantly to the positive outcomes.
