Violence in schools : a correlational study into the relationship between an Afrocentric orientation and attitudes towards violence among African secondary school learners in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.Sekhesa, Thabo. 05 May 2014 (has links)
This correlation study investigated the relationship between Africentric values (Collective work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics and Self determination) as measured by the Children’s Africentric Value Scale (CAVS) (Belgrave, Townsend, Cherry, & Cunningham, 1997) and attitudes towards violence reflected by Culture of Violence and Reactive Violence as measured by the Attitudes Towards Violence Scale: A Measure for adolescents (Funk, Elliot, Urman, Flores, & Mock, 1999) with a sample of 200 secondary school learners in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu Natal. There was no statistically significant relationship between the aforementioned Africentric values and attitudes towards violence. Gender was found to be a predictor of Reactive Violence with male participants being more prone to endorse reactive violence. The purpose of this research study was to focus on adolescents in a community where gang violence is rife and in turn reveals their perceptions on gang violence, what the causes of gang violence are and how they are affected by it as expressed in their own words. The researcher establishes the significance and necessity of focusing on adolescents as influenced by gang violence through a phenomenological exploration of their lives. The position that is developed affirms that adolescents are adversely affected by gang violence both from a behavioral and cognitive standpoint. The dire extent of gang violence on these adolescents&rsquo / lives is illustrated by using Fanon&rsquo / s six dimensions of violence. Furthermore various theoretical hypotheses are provided to explain the or igin of gang violence in comparison to the explanations expressed by the adolescents themselves from the interviews conducted. The study is concluded with recommendations extracted from relevant literature as well as comments expressed by the participants of this study. The main limitation within this study was the lack of research outputs within the South African context on the topic of how gang violence affects adolescents who are not gang members. The rich information produced by this study in conducting in-depth interviews with adolescents makes this study significant.

An expression of South African youth identity : understanding deliquency, violence and vandalism amongst the youth in selected informal settlementsMohale, Keneuoe January 2014 (has links)
This study sought to explore the perceptions of violence by the youth and to investigate the causes and consequences of violence amongst the youth. Specifically, the study aimed at exploring why the youth are predisposed to violence and violent crimes in informal settlements. A qualitative research design was used in this study. The researcher made use of the qualitative design because it allows for the richness of the personal experiences and meanings of the respondents to be explored, allowing the researcher to uncover variations between respondents. Based on the qualitative design, the study utilised the in-depth interview to solicit the views of young people living in New Brighton Township in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape Province. The objectives of the study were - To identify consequences of violence.- To assert if violence is normalised within a particular social environment.- To explore what predisposes the youth to violence.- To find out if parenting styles influence youth violence.- To explore the role of models in youth violence and crime. The respondents were selected through purposive sampling as the researcher sought typical and divergent data from the respondents. Data was collected through focus group interviews with nine young people aged nineteen to twenty- four years. The study established the following: Firstly, that violence is high in South African communities. It also found the following factors to be contributing to these high levels of violence: socialisation, unemployment, and family structures. The findings also indicated that some kinds of violence are normalised within the societies in which young people grow up in. Findings also indicate that, as a result of these violent behaviours, many South African youth lose their lives while others are imprisoned. This study also found that the environment in which a child grows up in has a greater impact on the child’s later behaviour in life. Overall, the study concluded that violence amongst the young people is a major problem facing South African communities. As one of the recommendations, the researcher indicated that punishing young people through imprisonment is not the solution, especially in a country where so many people are living in wretched poverty. Rather, the researcher recommended that minimising the levels of violence to which young people are exposed to on a daily basis could be one of the effective intervention strategies for decreasing this pandemic. This can be achieved by involving families, schools and communities in minimising this kind of exposure.

The aim of this study is to explore adolescent learners' experience of school violence in township high schools in order to develop and recommend a school prevention intervention programme/strategy. The study is explained in the theoretical framework of the bio-ecosystemic theory where violence is discussed as a reaction and as an action that occurs through reciprocal interaction between systems and the social environment. Through this interaction, adolescent learners are exposed to individual, family, school and community risk factors which place them at risk. Literature shows that schools in the township are sites of widespread violence; and these impacts on learners‟ emotional well-being. School violence also reflects the relationship that exists between what occurs in schools and what happens in learners' homes and communities.
The specific design selected for this study is a case study and is qualitative and explorative in nature. Unstructured interviews were conducted with individual learners and focus groups to gather information regarding adolescents' experiences of school violence. The data was analysed with three main themes emerging during the participants' interviews. The findings revealed that a significant number of adolescent learners in the township school have experienced some form of gender-related violence at school, and that boys are more often the perpetrators of this school violence. The findings further showed that lack of safety and class management is another cause of violence and the violent activities within the school are a symptom of the social ills of the community within which the school is situated. Conclusions drawn from the study are that school violence is a multifaceted phenomenon and, based on these findings, it is recommended that a 'whole school' and an integrated approach be taken when dealing with violence in schools. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Toenemende geweld in skole in Suid-Afrikaanse townships bederf die skoolomgewing en belemmer die opvoedkundige proses. Die doel van hierdie studie is om leerders se ervarings van geweld in hoërskole in townships te verken, ten einde 'n voorkomingsprogram/-strategie vir skole te ontwikkel en aan te beveel.
Die studie gebruik die teoretiese raamwerk van die bio-ekosistemiese teorie waarbinne geweld bespreek word as 'n aksie en 'n reaksie wat plaasvind deur wedersydse interaksie tussen die sisteme en die sosiale omgewing. Hierdie interaksie kan adolessente leerders aan individuele, gesinsverwante, skool- en gemeenskapsrisikofaktore blootstel. Die studie wys dat skole in townships die ligging is van wydverspreide geweld wat 'n uitwerking het op leerders se akademiese prestasie. The impact of organised crime on social control by the state : a study of Manenberg in Cape Town, South AfricaLambrechts, Derica 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study set out to research the influence of a local non-state actor on the role and authority of the state, in the domestic environment. Accordingly, the research problem focused on the impact of a domestic actor on the association between the state and the society. This study only focused on the state at the level of local government and the impact of one specific actor, organised criminal groups, on social control by the state. Thus, state-society relations were discussed in this context. In order to guide this study, the main and two supportive research questions were stated as follows: What is the impact of organised crime on the social control by the state? What are the power dynamics between local governance, criminal agents and society? Has the state become criminalised at the level of local government, as a result of the activities of organised crime, and if so, to what extent? The state thus functioned as the dependent variable and organised criminal groups as the independent variable. The theoretical foundation of this study was located in state-society relations, and specific reference was given to the work of Migdal (1988) and his analysis of state social control, pyramidal and weblike societies. Furthermore, a neo-pluralist view of the state was followed. A conceptualisation of the criminalisation of the state was provided, as the criminalisation of the state was regarded as one possible impact of organised crime on the state. In order to analyse the criminalisation of the state, a framework was constructed from four main avenues of empirical observation.
In order to answer the research questions, a case study research design and a predominantly qualitative methodology was selected. As a case, the City of Cape Town was selected and Manenberg, located on the Cape Flats, as the site for the research. A case study research design created the opportunity to describe the context in detail and to connect the micro level of analysis to the macro level; thus, it provided insight on the research topic that enabled the researcher to expand/build theory. The field research process occurred over a period of three months using a triangulation of methods: Key informant interview, small group discussions and observation with three categories of respondents. These three categories included: Community members of Manenberg, organised criminal groups and agents of local government and local governance.
In order to set the stage for the empirical analysis, a contextualisation of the dependent and independent variables were provided. It was stated that there is a lack of a universally agreed upon definition of organised crime, and as a result, a conceptualisation of organised crime was generated for this study. It was further argued that the majority of literature treats organised criminal groups and organised criminal gangs as two separate concepts, despite the fact that there are more similarities than differences. Thus, for the purpose of this study, a conclusion was reached that the difference is inconsequential. The development of organised crime in South Africa and an examination of the historical development of the gangs on the Cape Flats were described. With regards to the dependent variable, the context was provided for an analysis of local government in South Africa. The demographical and operational features of the municipal area of the City of Cape Town were explained, with specific reference to safety and security elements.
The primary data collected was analysed according to the indicators of social control (compliance, participation and legitimacy), as identified by Migdal (1988). In addition, the framework to analyse the criminalisation of the state at the level of local government was applied on the case study. Based on the analysis, a different system, to what was described by Migdal (1988) in his narrative of a triangle of accommodation was found to be in operation in Manenberg on the Cape Flats. It was confirmed that there is the presence of a weakened state and accordingly, a weblike society, where social control is fragmented between local government and the criminal community. However, in this weblike society a system of local power dynamics exists between the criminal community, social community and local agents of governance, where dyadic collaboration occurs between all three the actors. However, despite the collaboration, the criminalisation of the state does not occur, but rather the statification of the organised criminal community, as it provides goods and service to the social community. The main findings can be summarised as: If a state lacks extensive social control and a rival authority has claimed a level of social control, this will not necessarily lead to the further weakening of the state, as a result of a system of power dynamics in place, where collaboration between the social community, the criminal community and local agents of governance occurs. This system is kept in place by: On-going efforts by the state to maintain (or regain) compliance, participation and legitimacy; corrupt agents of the state (specifically in the security sector); a level of operational ease that exists for the criminal community (and the interweaving of the criminal community in the social community) and a relatively strong society that acknowledges the benefits of criminal activities for the social community, but also recognises the authority and control of the state. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie het ten doel om die uitwerking van 'n plaaslike nie-staatsrolspeler op die rol en gesag van die staat in die plaaslike omgewing te ondersoek. Text in Afrikaans / In hierdie studie is die aard en gevolge van bendegeweld onder kinders in die vroeë
adolessente jare by bendegeteisterde skole in die Wes-Kaap ondersoek ten einde
terapeutiese riglyne te bepaal vir leerders wat bendegeweld by die skool ervaar. Die
verskynsel van bendegeweld is in die literatuur ondersoek. Die bio-ekologiese teorie van
Urie Bronfenbrenner het as teoretiese grondslag vir die navorsing gedien, welke teorie
die wedersydse invloed wat persone en hul omgewing op mekaar het, beskryf.
Trauma by die vroeë adolessent en drie bestaande modelle vir traumaberading word
bespreek, waarna ’n stel maatstawwe vir ’n traumaberadingsmodel uit die drie modelle
sowel as die literatuur gekies word.
Die empiriese navorsing is deur middel van sowel kwantitatiewe- as kwalitatiewe
navorsingsmetodes gedoen. ’n Fokusgroepbespreking én onderhoude met onderwysers
en skoolhoofde het plaasgevind om diepgaande inligting oor behoeftes ná voorvalle van
bendegeweld te verkry. Twee in-diepte onderhoude is met persone wat kenners op die
gebied van bendes en bendegeweld is, gevoer. Vervolgens is twee vraelyste, een vir
leerders en een vir onderwysers en skoolhoofde, opgestel om vas te stel watter hulp
hulle met betrekking tot ’n trauma-intervensieprogram benodig. Die studie het bevind
dat bendegeweld leerders se akademiese prestasie sowel as hul emosionele en sosiale
funksionering raak, terwyl dit gevoelens van magteloosheid en frustrasie by
onderwysers en skoolhoofde veroorsaak.
Die studie sluit af met ’n verskeidenheid aanbevelings oor die daarstel van terapeutiese
riglyne vir opvoeders om die impak van bendegeweld op leerders by skole in
bendegeteisterde gebiede te hanteer. / This study investigated the nature and effects of gang violence among children in the
early adolescent stage of development at gang-infested schools in the Western Cape in
order to identify therapeutic guidelines for learners who experience gang violence at
school. The phenomenon of gang violence was explored in the literature study. The bioecosystems
theory of Urie Bronfenbrenner was employed as the theoretical basis for the
study, which describes the reciprocal influence between humans and their environment.
Early adolescent trauma and three existing models for trauma counselling are discussed,
followed by the selection of a set of criteria for a trauma counselling model based on the
three models as well as the literature studied.
The empirical research was carried out through both quantitative and qualitative
research methodologies. A focus group discussion as well as interviews with educators
and principals were conducted in order to obtain in-depth information on their needs
after incidents of gang violence. Two in-depth interviews have been conducted with
professionals who are experts in the domain of gangs and gang related violence. This led
to the development of two questionnaires, one for learners and one for educators and
principals, to determine what type of support they need in terms of a trauma intervention
programme. The study found that gang violence severely affects learners’ academic
performance as well as their emotional and social functioning, while it creates feelings
of frustration and powerlessness among teachers and principals.
The study concludes by offering a range of recommendations for the formulation of
therapeutic guidelines for educators to address the effects of gang violence on learners

An assessment of the Youth Crime Prevention Desk programmeHlungwani, Freddy 20 June 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study is to assess the implementation of the Youth Crime Prevention Desk (YCPD) programme in the Ekurhuleni North Cluster in Gauteng. Since the Social Crime Prevention Strategy was introduced in the South African Police Service (SAPS), no study has been conducted in the organisation to assess whether this strategy has yielded the expected results in line with its objectives.
Data was collected by means of in-depth interviews as well as focus group interviews with Community Policing Forum (CPF) members, YCPD programme community volunteers, SAPS social crime prevention coordinators, Department of Community Safety (DoCS) social crime prevention coordinators and a station commander in the Ekurhuleni North Cluster. These participants are closely involved with the YCPD programme and freely expressed their views, understanding, knowledge and beliefs in relation to the implementation and associated activities of the YCPD programme. In addition, the researcher conducted a comprehensive literature study of the national legislation, SAPS policies and directives that oversee and promote social crime prevention in South Africa, as well as library resources and international studies.
Various objectives were fulfilled in the execution of this study:
It was determined that social crime prevention guidelines are not complied with regarding the implementation of the YCPD.
It was determined that the YCPD is not achieving its proposed aims and objectives.
In addition, this study and its results provide a framework for mitigating the challenges encountered during the implementation of strategies for improving the establishment of the YCPD in the Ekurhuleni North Cluster.
The findings of the research indicate that the YCPD programme has not been effectively implemented within the Ekurhuleni North Cluster, since it became evident that the YCPD role-players are confronted by various challenges, which impede the proper implementation of the programme.
Based on the findings of this study, a Youth Crime Prevention Desk Implementation Framework was developed. This framework could serve as a guideline advising the South African Police Service, Department of Community Safety, Community Policing Forums and Youth Crime Prevention Desk programme’s community volunteers in the Ekurhuleni North Cluster how the implementation of the programme could be improved. This framework could also contribute towards further identifying best practices with a view to benchmarking such a framework in other areas in South Africa. Text in Afrikaans / In hierdie studie is die aard en gevolge van bendegeweld onder kinders in die vroeë
adolessente jare by bendegeteisterde skole in die Wes-Kaap ondersoek ten einde
terapeutiese riglyne te bepaal vir leerders wat bendegeweld by die skool ervaar. Die
verskynsel van bendegeweld is in die literatuur ondersoek. Die bio-ekologiese teorie van
Urie Bronfenbrenner het as teoretiese grondslag vir die navorsing gedien, welke teorie
die wedersydse invloed wat persone en hul omgewing op mekaar het, beskryf.
Trauma by die vroeë adolessent en drie bestaande modelle vir traumaberading word
bespreek, waarna ’n stel maatstawwe vir ’n traumaberadingsmodel uit die drie modelle
sowel as die literatuur gekies word.
Die empiriese navorsing is deur middel van sowel kwantitatiewe- as kwalitatiewe
navorsingsmetodes gedoen. ’n Fokusgroepbespreking én onderhoude met onderwysers
en skoolhoofde het plaasgevind om diepgaande inligting oor behoeftes ná voorvalle van
bendegeweld te verkry. Twee in-diepte onderhoude is met persone wat kenners op die
gebied van bendes en bendegeweld is, gevoer. Vervolgens is twee vraelyste, een vir
leerders en een vir onderwysers en skoolhoofde, opgestel om vas te stel watter hulp
hulle met betrekking tot ’n trauma-intervensieprogram benodig. Die studie het bevind
dat bendegeweld leerders se akademiese prestasie sowel as hul emosionele en sosiale
funksionering raak, terwyl dit gevoelens van magteloosheid en frustrasie by
onderwysers en skoolhoofde veroorsaak.
Die studie sluit af met ’n verskeidenheid aanbevelings oor die daarstel van terapeutiese
riglyne vir opvoeders om die impak van bendegeweld op leerders by skole in
bendegeteisterde gebiede te hanteer. / This study investigated the nature and effects of gang violence among children in the
early adolescent stage of development at gang-infested schools in the Western Cape in
order to identify therapeutic guidelines for learners who experience gang violence at
school. The phenomenon of gang violence was explored in the literature study. The bioecosystems
theory of Urie Bronfenbrenner was employed as the theoretical basis for the
study, which describes the reciprocal influence between humans and their environment.
Early adolescent trauma and three existing models for trauma counselling are discussed,
followed by the selection of a set of criteria for a trauma counselling model based on the
three models as well as the literature studied.
The empirical research was carried out through both quantitative and qualitative
research methodologies. A focus group discussion as well as interviews with educators
and principals were conducted in order to obtain in-depth information on their needs
after incidents of gang violence. Two in-depth interviews have been conducted with
professionals who are experts in the domain of gangs and gang related violence. This led
to the development of two questionnaires, one for learners and one for educators and
principals, to determine what type of support they need in terms of a trauma intervention
programme. The study found that gang violence severely affects learners’ academic
performance as well as their emotional and social functioning, while it creates feelings
of frustration and powerlessness among teachers and principals.
The study concludes by offering a range of recommendations for the formulation of
therapeutic guidelines for educators to address the effects of gang violence on learners
