Health and Well-being of Young Adults with Cerebral PalsySienko, Susan Elizabeth 20 May 2014 (has links)
Health is a multidimensional, holistic, concept integrating physical and mental health. In childhood, the most common cause of physical disability is Cerebral Palsy (CP). For individuals with CP, health and well-being is impacted by the complex interactions among their physical impairments, activity, participation and environmental barriers. Although CP is considered non-progressive, secondary conditions (pain and fatigue) and their functional consequences have been found to worsen as the individual with CP ages. While preliminary evidence shows that many of the physical impairments (pain, fatigue, depression) reported in adults with CP begin during late adolescence, there is little information about the role personal and environmental factors, impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions have on health and well-being of young adults with CP.
To understand the health and well-being of young adults with CP, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), a World Health Organization framework, guided the selection of survey instruments for this study. Surveys were sent to 610 young adults (18-30 years) with CP. 95 surveys were returned, 55 were self-reported and 40 were completed by proxies. Increasing severity of impairment was associated with decreased participation in daily activities and social roles, while loss of ambulatory ability, pain, fatigue, depression, and activity level did not differ by severity of impairment. Environmental barriers restricted the level of participation only for the self-report participants. Health status was decreased in those who self-reported increased pain, fatigue, and depression; offset by emotional support. Life satisfaction was decreased by depression and poor health; offset by emotional support.
Addressing the physical impairments, activity limitations, participation restrictions, personal factors and environmental barriers impacting young adults with CP requires coordinated efforts among the medical, educational and vocational systems. These efforts need to begin early with appropriate assessment and treatment of impairments, provision of assistive technologies and augmentative communication, and adaptation of the environment to facilitate participation in activities and social roles. The health and well-being in young adults with CP can also be improved with enhanced emotional support beyond the family unit through peer support groups, mentors, and other adult role models.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (2004) mandated schools engage parents in their child’s educational planning. Despite schools’ adoption of various strategies to promote parent engagement, parents’ perceptions about these strategies, especially among those whose children are at the secondary transition age, are often overlooked. To examine parents’ perceptions of 23 previously documented parent engagement strategies, we conducted a cross-sectional online survey with 642 parents of youth with disabilities (ages 14–21) in the United States. Overall, participants reported that parent engagement strategies were moderately helpful in promoting parent engagement. Parents of color reported lower scores for perceived helpfulness than their non-Hispanic White counterparts. Top-rated strategies included making time when parents have questions and communicating strategies clearly; however, this varied by race/ethnicity. Findings highlighted the need to address racial disparities in parent engagement strategies and the importance of school-parent collaboration/communication.

The purpose of this study was to determine special education teachers' perceptions of goals used to teach secondary mildly handicapped students and to identify hindrances to adopting these goals. A questionnaire was developed and attitudes were assessed by collecting data from secondary special education teachers who taught in the areas of learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, and educable mental retardation. A large suburban school district located in the southeastern united states comprised the survey (census) population.
Repeated measure analysis of variance tested for significant differences across teaching exceptionalities toward perceived acceptance and implementation of selected goals. Chi-square analyses tested for any relationships between acceptance and implementation of these goals, as well as teacher relationships toward classification of goals.
The findings of this study indicated that teachers of secondary mildly handicapped students exhibited very high acceptance for remedial, maintenance and functional goals for special education. Maintenance goals were perceived to be most important to LD teachers while functional ones were important to EMR instructors. Remedial goals were equally accepted by the LD, ED, and EMR sectors. There was a relatively high rate of implementation for remedial goals for all the teaching groups with no difference in the degree of implementation across the three exceptionalities noted. LD teachers implemented remedial and maintenance goals more than functional ones. ED instructors implemented remedial goals most often, while EMR teachers instructed the most in the functional area. In some instances, especially in the functional area, teachers did not implement specific goals which they perceived to be acceptable. Lack of time was the greatest instructional barrier for LD teachers while parent support hindered ED instructors the most. Diploma. requirements were the most formidable instructional hindrance for the EMR sector. Classroom teachers did not always classify instructional goals in the same manner as experts in the field, and this trend was noted more often in the classification of remedial goals. / Ed. D.

The lived experience of Glue Ear : voices of mothers and young peopleCapewell, Carmel January 2014 (has links)
This qualitative research enabled the participants (three young people, aged nine to fourteen years, and seven mothers) to explain their experience of living with long-term Glue Ear. As far as I could ascertain this is the first research in which young people and their mothers have led the researcher in exploring their experience. This innovative research illustrates the effects of the condition at home and school. It provides insight into participants’ views of interactions with healthcare and educational professionals. Photovoice is usually used with groups, but in this research it was successfully adapted to enable individual participants to reflect on their experience. The data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to keep the focus on each participant’s words. Innovatively combining these two methodologies provided depth to both the data gathering and the data analysis. Five healthcare and educational professionals were interviewed to understand their perspective. The contribution of this research is that the methodology enabled young people and their mothers to reflect on their experience and lead the researcher in understanding the impact Glue Ear had on their day-to-day life. It highlighted the need for educational professionals to receive more formal training about Glue Ear’s potential educational and social impacts and to potentially adapt their teaching and learning practices to better support affected students. Young people and their parents demonstrated that they have valuable information to contribute to decisions about their healthcare and education requirements and would welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively with such professionals.

And the most impacted with changes in the workplace are the minority groups, such as young people with disabilities. This reality is also witnessed in the city of Manaus, mainly in the Industrial Pole of Manaus-AM PIM, where a large portion of this population group is outside the labor market, mainly due to lack of opportunity. Faced with this, the present study was to analyze the overall process of inclusion of Youth with disabilities in the labor market of Manaus in the period 2010-2013 Specific objectives:. Outline the profile of young people with disabilities included in the formal labor market and the types of occupations they perform; know the process of selection and recruitment of young people with disabilities hired by companies; investigate the demands that led to the hiring, and barriers to the inclusion of young people with disabilities in the labor market; meet the vision of the youth with disabilities about their inclusion in the labor market in order to identify the limits and possibilities of this process. This research is anchored in the quantity qualitative approach, the following techniques were used: semi-structured with two (2) Fiscal Auditors of Regional Labour-stream, with one (1) Coordinator in each Entity Learning SENAI-interview and Feitoza Paulo Foundation, and two (2) representatives of the Sine-Manaus; and also the Survey questionnaire was administered to nine (9) Senai. Found that young people with disabilities who participate in Senai learning modalities are physical and deaf majority, and there is a prevalence of young male 'occupations they currently are: injection machine operator, administrative assistant selection and recruitment of disabled Sine is made through demand company, which requested most often people with mild disabilities or only one type of disability. Causing thereby prejudiced and discriminatory practices, which violates the rights of persons with disabilities, and the companies that employ more people with disabilities are the electronics industry. Constant inspections conducted by Regional Labour and Employment - AM are not enough to expand the inclusion of youth with disabilities in PIM, therefore there is a gap or weakness in compliance with the Law of Coasts 8.213 91 in the face of a whole and factors ranging from the lack of professional qualification of young people with disabilities; the low schooling; refusal by persons with disabilities themselves, as already receive the continuous benefits-BPC Federal Government, lack of encouragement from the government to the company; lack of accessibility and adapted urban public transport, among others. Despite the youth signaled no difficulty to be included in the labor market has lost employment opportunity and were discriminated against for being a disabled person. / A inclusão de jovens com deficiência no mercado de trabalho é um desafio para a sociedade brasileira, isto porque o desemprego juvenil aumentou consideravelmente nos últimos anos. E os mais impactados com as transformações no mundo do trabalho são os grupos minoritários, como os jovens com deficiência. Essa realidade também é presenciada na cidade de Manaus, principalmente, no Polo Industrial de Manaus – PIM/AM, onde grande parcela desse contingente populacional está fora do mercado de trabalho, especialmente pela falta de oportunidade. Frente a isso, a presente pesquisa teve como objetivo geral analisar o processo de inclusão de Jovens com deficiência no mercado de trabalho de Manaus no período de 2010 a 2013. Como objetivos específicos: traçar o perfil dos jovens com deficiência incluídos no mercado de trabalho formal e os tipos de ocupações por eles exercidas; conhecer o processo de seleção e recrutamento dos jovens com deficiência contratados pelas empresas; investigar as demandas que originaram a contratação e os entraves para a inclusão dos jovens com deficiência no mercado de trabalho; conhecer a visão do jovem com deficiência sobre a sua inclusão no mercado de trabalho a fim de identificar os limites e possibilidades deste processo. Esta pesquisa, foi ancorada numa da abordagem quanti-qualitaiva. Dos jovens com deficiência que participam das modalidades aprendizagem do Senai, a maioria é de deficientes físicos e auditivos; há uma prevalência de jovens do sexo masculino; as ocupações exercidas pelos jovens participantes da pesquisa são: operador de máquina injetora e auxiliar administrativo. A seleção e recrutamento das pessoas com deficiência no Sine são realizadas por meio da demanda das empresas, as quais solicitam na maioria das vezes, pessoas com deficiência leve ou só um tipo de deficiência, o que acarreta, práticas de discriminatória e preconceituosa, ferindo os direitos das pessoas com deficiência mais graves. As empresas que mais empregam pessoas com deficiência são do ramo eletroeletrônico. As constantes fiscalizações realizadas pela Superintendência Regional do Trabalho e Emprego - AM não estão sendo suficientes para ampliar a inclusão dos jovens com deficiência no PIM, pois ainda existe uma lacuna ou fragilidade no cumprimento da Lei de Costas 8.213 91 - em face de um conjunto de fatores, tais como: falta de qualificação profissional dos jovens com deficiência; baixa escolarização; recusa por parte das próprias pessoas com deficiência, por já receberem o Benefício de Prestação Continuada - BPC do Governo Federal, falta de estímulo do governo para empresa; falta de acessibilidade urbanística e de transporte público adaptado, dentre outros. Apesar dos jovens sinalizarem que não tiveram dificuldade de ser incluídos no mercado de trabalho, já perderam oportunidades de emprego e foram discriminados por serem pessoas com deficiência. Conclui-se que, apesar dos avanços processados para esse segmento populacional nos últimos anos no Brasil, principalmente, com a Lei de Cotas, ainda são grandes os desafios para inclusão dos jovens com deficiência nas empresas do PIM de Manaus. O que requer uma nova forma de pensar e agir em benefício das pessoas com deficiência, e consequentemente, a ampliação da cidadania.
