A leitura jornalística na contemporaneidade : novas e velhas práticas dos leitores de zerohora.com

Knewitz, Anna Paula January 2010 (has links)
The objective of this study is to analyse the way practices related to print newspaper and online newspaper coexist, so as to comprehend the configuration of the contemporary journalistic reading. In order to do so, the Mediation Theory of Martín-Barbero (2004) was taken as reference, a contribution considered to be flexible enough to accept within the scope of Cultural Studies an object typically approached in Cyberculture domains. The present research ellected as empirical object Zerohora.com portal and was structured in two axes of analysis. A diachronic axis (print newspaper → digital newspaper), which was concerned with identifying ruptures and continuities between these two journalistic modalities; and a synchronic axis (technicalities → rituals), which was destined to examine how changes made by technology on languages and formats, in space-time and sociocultural relations were incorporated into the readers‘ everyday lives. The data that fed both vectors of investigation were collected by ethnographic interviews. The results are presented as a series of practices related to six analytical categories: reading coordinates, support preferences, reading pathways, participation forms, uses of multimedia resources and ways of updating – lines which finally delimited the proposition of a reading typology.

The Trump Administration's Zero-Tolerance Policy: Separating Families as Immigration Deterrence

Larsen, Evelyn 01 January 2019 (has links)
This paper analyzes how the Trump Administration’s zero-tolerance policy compares with the history of detention and immigration policy within the United States. President Trump believes there is a “border crisis,” wants to deter immigrants from coming to the U.S. and will “do whatever it takes to ensure border security” (Warner, 2018). A 7-year-old girl died in Customs and Border Patrol’s custody on December 7th, 2018. She suffered from dehydration and starvation (Valencia& Boyette 2018). This horrific event, and many other stories prompted me to do this research. In this thesis, I use qualitative and comparative methods of analysis by looking at the rate of immigration along the U.S. southern border under the Obama Administration and the Trump Administration. I unpack why detention is higher today than it was under Obama’s administration without a substantial spike in migration. I discuss how the human rights of these asylum seekers are being violated, in particular society’s most vulnerable social group: children. My thesis asks the question, how has the zero-tolerance policy of the Trump Administration resulted in human rights abuses? Using Foucault’s philosophy of prisons and punishment, this paper argues that the change in border policies since the Trump Administration’s zero-tolerance policy have led to clear human rights abuses, such as child separation, for the purpose of deterring other immigrants from coming to the United States.

Zero-Crossings and Spatiotemporal Interpretation in Vision

Poggio, Tomaso, Nielsen, Kenneth, Nishihara, Keith 01 May 1982 (has links)
We will briefly outline a computational theory of the first stages of human vision according to which (a) the retinal image is filtered by a set of centre-surround receptive fields (of about 5 different spatial sizes) which are approximately bandpass in spatial frequency and (b) zero-crossings are detected independently in the output of each of these channels. Zero-crossings in each channel are then a set of discrete symbols which may be used for later processing such as contour extraction and stereopsis. A formulation of Logan's zero-crossing results is proved for the case of Fourier polynomials and an extension of Logan's theorem to 2-dimentsional functions is also approved. Within this framework, we shall describe an experimental and theoretical approach (developed by one of us with M. Fahle) to the problem of visual acuity and hyperacuity of human vision. The positional accuracy achieved, for instance, in reading a vernier is astonishingly high, corresponding to a fraction of the spacing between adjacent photoreceptors in the fovea. Stroboscopic presentation of a moving object can be interpolated by our visual system into the perception of continuous motion; and this "spatio-temporal" interpolation also can be very accurate. It is suggested that the known spatiotemporal properties of the channels envisaged by the theory of visual processing outlined above implement an interpolation scheme which can explain human vernier acuity for moving targets.

Analysis and Development of Potential Material & By-Product Synergies between Zero-Emissions Industries and Urban Waste Streams.

Rahman, Md. Arafat January 2013 (has links)
The concept of integration of industries in urban setup is the current trend among researchers and engineers in the field of industrial ecology and environmental engineering. Trend of urbanization forces an increasing human demand for energy, materials, water and other resources. Urban symbiosis nowadays is closely related to the controlling of urban metabolism. Closing material loops works as an effective way for a circular economy where theoretically no waste is generated. In this thesis work, an investigation has been made for studying current symbiotic activities in the city of Linköping and look for any potential energy or by-product synergies from industrial activities and the urban waste streams. Some of the companies have been found to be already engaged in such type of activities, directly or indirectly. Hence, uncovering symbiotic activity is also an important task to consider while assessing the feasibility of a network of industries and urban settlement. Finally, it is concluded that the symbiotic activity in the city of Linköping is developing with discovering of new opportunities from waste and by-products from industries and the city area.  The municipal utility company Tekniska Verken and its subsidiary Svensk Biogas could play the role as anchor tenants and the aeronautics company SAAB, for its huge production line, has good potential to participate in exchange of physical materials.

Zero gravity two-phase flow regime transition modeling compared with data and relap5-3d predictions

Ghrist, Melissa Renee 15 May 2009 (has links)
This thesis compares air/water two-phase flow regime transition models in zero gravity with data and makes recommendations for zero gravity models to incorporate into the RELAP5-3D thermal hydraulic computer code. Data from numerous researchers and experiments are compiled into a large database. A RELAP5-3D model is built to replicate the zero gravity experiments, and flow regime results from the RELAP5-3D code are compared with data. The comparison demonstrates that the current flow regime maps used in the computer code do not scale to zero gravity. A new flow regime map is needed for zero gravity conditions. Three bubbly-to-slug transition models and four slug-to-annular transition models are analyzed and compared with the data. A mathematical method is developed using least squares to objectively compare the accuracy of the models with the data. The models are graded by how well each represents the data. Agreement with data validates the recommendations made for changes to the RELAP5-3D computer code models. For smaller diameter tubes, Dukler’s bubbly-to-slug model best fits the data. For the larger tubes, the Drift Flux model is a better fit. The slug-to-annular transition is modeled best by Creare for small tubes and Reinarts for larger tubes. A major finding of this thesis work is that more air/water data is needed at equally distributed flow velocities and a greater variety of tube diameters. More data is specifically needed in the predicted transition regions made in this study.

Effect of different density, inbuilt objects and feeds on white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) cultured in zero-exchange system

Kang, Hao-ling 07 February 2006 (has links)
Zero-exchange system doesn¡¦t discharge the nutrient-rich pool water to the environment, so it doesn¡¦t cause the pollution. Besides, nutrients in the water can be re-used and the amount of water used can be reduced. In shrimp pond, ammonia and nitrite will accumulate during the period of cultivation because of feeding large amount of protein-rich feed. In traditional culture system, a great deal of water was used to solve the problem. In zero-exchange system, nitro-bacteria were used to convert ammonia and nitrite into nitrate, the need of water exchange was much-reduced. In this study, shrimps (Litopenaeus vannamei) were cultured in FRP tanks, and organic particles were suspended by strong aeration. There are four experiments (1) substrate: net-liners, net-pockets, mats, coral granules and blank control. (2) density: 100, 200, 300 and 400 /m2. (3) feeds: White shrimp feed (contain 39% protein), tiger shrimp feed (contain 39% protein) and Kuruma prawn feed (contain protein 54%). (4) zero-exchange water and change water (35% ponds of water / week). Net-pockets have the highest yield and final weigh and lowest FCR, and the net-liners isolate highest amount of the suspending particle. Shrimp final weight reduces as the stocking density increases, white shrimp grows slower when density excess 200 /m2. Feed contains higher protein can improve the efficiency of feed used by shrimp, but the cost of the feed become higher. Use the tiger shrimp feed (containing 39% protein) only can also reach high yield. Except orthophosphate, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate are not different from the exchange system. When compared with those of the zero-exchange system survival, final weigh and FCR are not different between two the treatments, but yield is higher in zero-exchange system. In conclusion, shrimp cultured in zero-exchange system with density of 200 /m2, substrate of net-pockets and feeds the contain 39% protein can reveal optimum yield.

Improving the Fetching Performance of Instruction Stream Buffer for VLIW Architectures with Compressed Instructions

Yang, Kai-Ming 25 August 2006 (has links)
Because of the restriction on structure hazard and instruction data dependence, the quantity of NOP instructions fills up a program for VLIW Architectures. This problem causes a waste of program memory, so that an instruction compression mechanism is a must for VLIW Architectures. The vectorized instruction in DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial) DSP will collect the discrete vectors into one continuous vector. This mechanism is based on the software-pipeline of the zero overhead looping mode. It is important to improve the efficiency of instruction fetcher. Additionally, the branch instruction can cause the non-continuous behavior of a program and the damage of the efficiency of instruction fetcher. The mechanism of compressed instructions causes the irregular length of long instruction in fetch packet. The problem becomes difficult designed. The thesis implements a design of improving instruction stream buffer, which can keep the repeat block in buffer. This mechanism overcomes the effects of zero overhead looping and branch instruction. It can also improve the efficiency of continuously fetch instructions. The simulation result shows that the mechanism has a good efficiency in FFT, FIR and DCT.

Hierarchical SDD Metric and Multiresolution Motion Estimation

Hsu, Chin-Hsun 09 July 2002 (has links)
In this paper a novel Hierarchical Sum of Double Difference metric, HSDD, was introduced. It was shown, as opposed to conventional Sum of Absolute Difference (SAD) metric, how this embedded-coding aware metric can jointly constrain the motion vector searching in both temporal and spatial (quad-tree) directions under multiresolution motion estimation (MRME) framework. The temporal-spatial co-optimization concept from HSDD brings us the motion compensation pyramid with better shape. The reward is that fewer bits are spent later for describing the isolated zeros. The compression performance of HSDD easily exceeds the performance of its competitors, especially when high compression ratios are used.

A Low Overhead Transport Protocol for Linux Networking

Chiu, Shih-Yang 29 July 2008 (has links)
In this thesis, a low overhead transport protocol for Linux networking is proposed. This proposed protocol is motivated by the observation that the transport protocol for Linux requires more than a single memory copy for both the receiving and transmission of a packet, which is essentially redundant. In this thesis, we show that all but one of the memory copies can be eliminated, thus reducing the number of memory copies to one and only one, which is in general referred to as zero copy.
