Parenting in Urban Slum Areas : Families with Children in a Shantytown of Rio de Janeiro

This is a study of parenting and child development in a slum area in a developing part of the world. The aims of the study were threefold. The first aim was to explore the physical and social contexts for parenting in a shantytown in Rio de Janeiro using an ecological perspective. The second aim was to examine parenting and subsequent child outcomes among a sample of families living in the shantytown. The third aim was to explore what factors contribute to differences among parents in how they nurture and protect their children. The theoretical framework of the study was an updated version of Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model of human development. Using self-report questionnaires developed by Rohner, data on perceived parental acceptance–rejection were collected from 72 families with adolescents 12–14 years old, representing approx. 75% of all households with children in this age group in the shantytown. Besides self-report questionnaires, each adolescent’s main caregiver replied to several standardized questionnaires developed by Garbarino et al., eliciting demographic and social-situational data about the family, neighborhood, and wider community. The results of the study paint a complex portrait of the social living conditions of the parents and children. Despite many difficulties, most parents seemed to raise their children with loving care. The results from the self-report questionnaires indicate that the majority of the adolescents perceived substantial parental acceptance. The adolescents’ experience of greater or lesser parental acceptance–rejection seems to influence their emotional and behavioral functioning; it also seems to be related to their school attendance. Much of the variation in degree of perceived acceptance–rejection seems to be related both to characteristics of the individual adolescents and their main caregiver(s) and to influences from the social and environmental context in which they and their caregivers interact and live their lives.

Aceitação/rejeição da evolução biológica: atitudes de alunos da educação básica / Acceptance / rejection of biological evolution: attitudes of students of basic education.

A teoria evolutiva fornece a compreensão das características fundamentais da vida e as relações dos organismos com seu ambiente. Embora seja atribuído à evolução biológica um papel unificador das Ciências Biológicas, os estudantes em geral a rejeitam ou apresentam dificuldades de compreensão de seus conceitos básicos. A controvérsia que envolve o tema extrapola as salas de aula de ciências e ganha uma dimensão mais conflitante nos Estados Unidos, onde grupos criacionistas buscam desqualificar a teoria evolutiva como conhecimento científico comprovado. Apesar de não existirem tradições fortes do criacionismo no Brasil, esse movimento tem ganhado cada vez mais espaço, principalmente no meio acadêmico. Tendo em vista as controvérsias que envolvem as construções afetivas e culturais no ensinoaprendizagem da teoria evolutiva, o multiculturalismo que caracteriza o Brasil e os resultados de levantamentos de opiniões que indicam que os brasileiros concordam com alguns itens do movimento criacionista, interessou-se pela realização desta investigação, que tem como objetivo verificar a aceitação/rejeição da teoria da evolução de alunos recém-egressos da oitava série (8ª série) do Ensino Fundamental de escolas públicas de Tangará da Serra MT e São Caetano do Sul SP; e caracterizar possíveis relações entre a atitude dos informantes sobre teoria evolutiva e a proximidade entre ciência e religião. A pesquisa consistiu de duas etapas: a primeira foi o levantamento bibliográfico das pesquisas brasileiras acerca da evolução biológica e a presença do movimento criacionista no contexto escolar. Essa etapa resultou em um balanço geral dos trabalhos publicados e indicou uma lacuna dentre as pesquisas nacionais acerca do tema. Na segunda etapa, realizou-se a investigação empírica, pois, tendo em vista que não foram identificados trabalhos acerca da atitude de estudantes da Educação Básica sobre a teoria da evolução, reforçou-se o interesse por esse tema de estudo. Os questionários foram elaborados e aplicados mediante a possibilidade da aplicação do ROSE no Brasil. Dessa forma, o questionário foi aplicado em escala tipo Likert de 4 pontos aos moldes do instrumento de coleta do ROSE. Os questionários foram aplicados a 294 estudantes de Tangará da Serra MT e 358 estudantes de São Caetano do Sul SP. A análise dos dados foi realizada com auxílio do Software Statistical Package for Social Science versão 15.0. Os resultados demonstram que os estudantes aceitam os tópicos da evolução biológica, quando as afirmações ilustram os registros fósseis como provas da existência de espécies que viveram no passado, a ancestralidade comum e a seleção natural. Mas quando o conteúdo dos itens engloba a origem e evolução da Terra e do ser humano, a atitude dos respondentes é de discordar desses tópicos. Os níveis de aceitação parecem influenciados principalmente pela religião: os estudantes evangélicos apresentaram níveis mais baixos de concordância com teoria evolutiva. A possível relação entre a rejeição de alguns itens e a religião representa a possibilidade de que a existência de diferentes formas de conhecimento para explicar a existência humana exige que se façam distinções entre a ciência e as demais. Discussões sobre a natureza da ciência podem contribuir para amenizar alguns conflitos culturais por alunos que entendem a evolução como oposta às suas convicções pessoais. / The evolutionary theory provides an understanding of the main characteristics of life and the relationship of the organisms with their environment. Although a unifying role is attributed to biological evolution in the Biological Sciences, in general, students reject it or present difficulties in understanding its basic concepts. The controversy which surrounds the subject extrapolates the science classroom and acquires a more conflicting dimension in the United States, where creationist groups aim at disqualifying evolutionary theory as a proven scientific knowledge. Although there are no strong creationist traditions in Brazil, this movement has been gaining more and more space, especially in the academic environment. Interest to carry out this research was developed when the controversies which involve the emotional and cultural constructions in teaching and learning the evolutionary theory, the multiculturalism that characterizes Brazil and some opinion polls results which indicate that Brazilians agree with some items of the creationist were considered. The research aims at verifying the acceptance or rejection of the evolutionary theory by students who have just finished the eighth grade of primary school at the public schools in Tangará da Serra MT and São Caetano do Sul SP; and at characterizing possible relations among the informants attitude towards the evolutionary theory and the closeness between science and religion. The research consisted of two steps: the first step was a bibliographical survey of the Brazilian researches on biological evolution and the presence of the creationist movement within the school context. This step resulted in a general consensus which indicated that there are very few Brazilian researches on this subject. In the second step, an empirical research was done since no studies on the attitude of basic education students towards evolution were found, but the interest in the theme of the study was reinforced. Questionnaires were elaborated and applied, together with the ROSE questionnaire, to 294 students in Tangará da Serra MT and 358 students in São Caetano do Sul SP. The data analysis was carried out with the help of the Software Statistical Package for Social Science version 15.0. The results show that the students accept the topics of evolutionary theory, regarding fossils as evidence of the existence of species which lived in the past, a common ancestry and natural selection. On the other hand, when the points are about origin and evolution of the earth and the human being, the students attitude is to disagree with this topic. The acceptance levels seem to be influenced mainly by religion: the evangelical students had lower levels of agreement with the evolutionary theory. The possible relation between the rejection of some topics and religion represents the possibility that existence of different forms of knowledge to explain the human existence demands that one makes distinctions between science and the other forms. Discussions about the nature of science may contribute to settle some cultural conflicts of students who understand evolution as something that is opposed to their personal convictions.

Comparisons of methods for generating conditional Poisson samples and Sampford samples

Methods for conditional Poisson sampling (CP-sampling) and Sampford sampling are compared and the focus is on the efficiency of the methods. The efficiency is investigated by simulation in different sampling situations. It was of interest to compare methods since new methods for both CP-sampling and Sampford sampling were introduced by Bondesson, Traat &amp; Lundqvist in 2004. The new methods are acceptance rejection methods that use the efficient Pareto sampling method. They are found to be very efficient and useful in all situations. The list sequential methods for both CP-sampling and Sampford sampling are other methods that are found to be efficient, especially if many samples are to be generated.

The Examination Of The Roles Of Parental Acceptancerejection/control, Personality Traits And Copingstrategies On Psychological Distress

The purpose of the current study was to examine the path of parental acceptancerejection/ control, personality traits, coping strategies and psychological distress consequently. For the purpose of this study, 444 adults (134 male, 308 female, and 2 unknown) between the ages of 17 and 35 (M = 21.60, SD = 2.77) participated in the current study. The data was collected by a questionnaire battery including a Demographic Variable Sheet, Mother and Father Forms of Parent Acceptance- Rejection/Control Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory, Trait Anxiety Inventory, The Ways of Coping Inventory, and Basic Personality Traits Inventory. The three sets of hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted to reveal the significant associates of psychological distress. As expected, the results of the current study revealed that parental rejection, different personality traits and different coping strategies had associated with psychological distress as depression and trait anxiety. Following findings and the relevant literature, the limitations, therapeutic implications of the current study, and the suggestion for future research were discussed.

Associations Of Psychological Problems With Parental Acceptance-rejection, Social Support, And Locus Of Control: A Study Conducted With Adolescents

The aim of the present study was to examine the associations between demographic variables, parental acceptance-rejection (PAR), social support (SS), locus of control (LC), and psychological problems with adolescents. The study consisted of 375 high school students (215 females and 160 males) from three different high schools in Ankara whose age range between 14-18. Furthermore, 134 of students&rsquo / both parents, 18 of students&rsquo / only mothers, and 5 of students&rsquo / only fathers participated into the study. A questionnaire packet (Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire/Control: Child Version, Personality Assessment Questionnaire: Child Version, Positive Affect Negative Affect Schedule, Social Support Appraisals Scale for Children, Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale for Children) was administered to the students and Conners&rsquo / Parent Rating Scale was filled by both mothers and fathers. The results revealed that after controlling the effect of demographic variables, SS from family was positively associated with positive affect and negatively with externalizing problems and psychological maladjustment (PM). After controlling the effects of demographic variables and SS, internal LC was positively associated with positive affect and impulsivity/hyperactivity and external LC with PM. Moreover, controlling the effects of demographic variables, SS and LC, maternal hostility/aggression was positively associated with PM / maternal undifferentiated rejection with negative affect, conduct problem and oppositional defiant disorder / paternal warmth/affection with positive affect and learning problem / paternal indifference/neglect with impulsivity/hyperactivity and paternal undifferentiated rejection with oppositional defiant disorder. The findings of the study were discussed in the light of the literature. Additionally, limitations and implications of the study and suggestions for future researches were stated.

Heavy-tail statistical monitoring charts of the active managers' performance

Many performance measurement algorithms can only evaluate measure active managers' performance after a period of operating time. However, most investors are interested in monitoring the active managers' performances at any time, especially, when the performance is going down. So that the investors can adjust the targets and contents of their portfolios to reduce their risks. Yashchin,Thomas and David (1997) proposed to use a statistical quality control (SQC) procedure to monitor active managers' performances. In particular, they established the IR (Information Ratio) control charts under normality assumption to monitor the dynamic performances of active managers. However, the distributions of IR statistic usually possess fat tail property. Since the underlying distribution of IR is an important hypothesis in building up the control chart, we consider the heavy tail distributions, such as mixture normal and generalized error distribution to fit the IR data. Based on the fitted distribution, the IR control charts are rebuilt. By simulations and empirical studies, the remedial control charts are found to detect the shifts of active managers' performances more sensitively.

The Effects Of Maternal Acceptance-rejection On Psychological Distress Of Adolescents: The Mediator Roles Of Early Maladaptive Schemas

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationships between perceived maternal rejection and psychological distress of adolescents. In addition to that, mediator roles of early maladaptive schemas in this relationship were explored. A total of 356 second-grade high school students (198 females and 158 males) were participated in the study. Participants ranged in age from 15 to 18 (M = 16.17, SD= 0.53). Data was collected by a questionnaire packet consisting Demographic data form, Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ), Parental Acceptance and Rejection Questionnaire (PARQ) , trait part of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T), trait part of State-Trait Anger Inventory (ANG-T) Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). Preceding the main analyses, factor analysis for YSQ was performed. It yielded three higher-order factors for YSQ as Impaired Limits- Exaggerated Standards, Disconnection-Rejection, and Impaired Autonomy-Other Directedness. Following factor analysis, ANOVAs were employed to assess differences between adolescents perceiving high acceptance and high rejection in terms of psychological distress measures (i.e., anger, positive affect, negative affect, and anxiety). It was found that adolescents perceiving high rejection were more likely to experience anger, negative affect, and anxiety than those perceiving high acceptance. In order to test whether Impaired Limits-Exaggerated Standards, Disconnection-Rejection, and Impaired Autonomy-Other Directedness mediate the relationship between perceptions of maternal rejection and adolescents&rsquo / anger, positive affect, negative affect, and anxiety respectively, separate hierarchical regression analyses were conducted as suggested by Baron and Kenny (1986). Mediation analyses revealed in general that both maternal rejection and schema domains had main effects on psychological distress measures. However, none of the schema domains did mediate the relationship between maternal rejection and psychological distress measures except for the disconnection-rejection schema domain. The result revealed that disconnection-rejection schema domain mediated the relationship between maternal rejection and anger. These findings were discussed with reference to the relevant literature. Future research topics were suggested and therapeutic implications of the study were discussed.

Parental Acceptance-rejection/control And Symptoms Of Psychopathology: Mediator Roles Of Personality Characteristics

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships between parental acceptance-rejection/control, personality constructs and symptoms of psychopathology. In this regard, 801 university students (440 females and 361 males) between the ages of 18 and 47 (M = 21.85, SD = 2.59) participated in the present study. The data of the study were collected by a package of questionnaires consisting of Demographic Information Sheet, Mother Form of Parental Acceptance-Rejection/ Control Questionnaire, Father Form of Parental Acceptance-Rejection/ Control Questionnaire, Basic Personality Traits Inventory, Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Locus of Control Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, Trait form of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory and Trait form of the State Trait Anger Expression Inventory, respectively. Prior to main analyses, factor structure of the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale was investigated in a university student sample. Similar to the original formulation and theoretical background, a six-factor solution was utilized including concern over mistakes, doubts about actions, personal standards, organization parental criticism and parental expectations factors. Later on, various MANOVAs were conducted to examine the influence of demographic variables on the measures of the study. Accordingly, socio-economic level and gender were indentified to have influence on parental behaviors, personality constructs and trait anxiety. Afterwards, two sets of hierarchical analyses were conducted to examine the paths between personality constructs and symptoms of psychopathology. As expected, negative parental behaviors predicted maladaptive personality constructs and symptoms of psychopathology. Furthermore, multiple regression analyses were conducted to test the mediator role of perfectionism on the relationship between parental rejection/control and symptoms of psychopathology. Accordingly, perfectionism was identified as a mediator on the relationship between both maternal and paternal rejection and symptoms of psychopathology. On the other hand, in terms of parental control, only the relationship between paternal control and trait anger was mediated by the perfectionism. Later on, results of the current study were discussed within the related literature findings. Finally, clinical implications and suggestions for future research were stated.
