Practical Coordination of Multi-Vehicle Systems in Formation

This thesis considers the cooperation and coordination of multi vehicle systems cohesively in order to keep the formation geometry and provide the string stability. We first present the modeling of aerial and road vehicles representing different motion characteristics suitable for cooperative operations. Then, a set of three dimensional cohesive motion coordination and formation control schemes for teams of autonomous vehicles is proposed. The two main components of these schemes are i) platform free high level online trajectory generation algorithms and ii) individual trajectory tracking controllers. High level algorithms generate the desired trajectories for three dimensional leader-follower structured tight formations, and then distributed controllers provide the individual control of each agent for tracking the desired trajectories. The generic goal of the control scheme is to move the agents while maintaining the formation geometry. We propose a distributed control scheme to solve this problem utilizing the notions of graph rigidity and persistence as well as techniques of virtual target tracking and smooth switching. The distributed control scheme is developed by modeling the agent kinematics as a single-velocity integrator; nevertheless, extension to the cases with simplified kinematic and dynamic models of fixed-wing autonomous aerial vehicles and quadrotors is discussed. The cohesive cooperation in three dimensions is so beneficial for surveillance and reconnaissance activities with optimal geometries, operation security in military activities, more viable with autonomous flying, and future aeronautics aspects, such as fractionated spacecraft and tethered formation flying. We then focus on motion control task modeling for three dimensional agent kinematics and considering parametric uncertainties originated from inertial measurement noise. We design an adaptive controller to perform the three dimensional motion control task, paying attention to the parametric uncertainties, and employing a recently developed immersion and invariance based scheme. Next, the cooperative driving of road vehicles in a platoon and string stability concepts in one-dimensional traffic are discussed. Collaborative driving of commercial vehicles has significant advantages while platooning on highways, including increased road-capacity and reduced traffic congestion in daily traffic. Several companies in the automotive sector have started implementing driver assistance systems and adaptive cruise control (ACC) support, which enables implementation of high level cooperative algorithms with additional softwares and simple electronic modifications. In this context, the cooperative adaptive cruise control approach are discussed for specific urban and highway platooning missions. In addition, we provide details of vehicle parameters, mathematical models of control structures, and experimental tests for the validation of our models. Moreover, the impact of vehicle to vehicle communication in the existence of static road-side units are given. Finally, we propose a set of stability guaranteed controllers for highway platooning missions. Formal problem definition of highway platooning considering constant and velocity dependent spacing strategies, and formal string stability analysis are included. Additionally, we provide the design of novel intervehicle distance based priority coefficient of feed-forward filter for robust platooning. In conclusion, the importance of increasing level of autonomy of single agents and platoon topology is discussed in performing cohesive coordination and collaborative driving missions and in mitigating sensory errors. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate the performance of our cohesive motion and string stable controllers, in addition we discuss application in formation control of autonomous multi-agent systems.

Modeling, Estimation and Attitude Control of an Octorotor Using PID and L1 Adaptive Control Techniques / Modellering, estimering och attitydreglering av en oktakopter med användning av PID- och L1-adaptiv teknik

A multirotor is a type of aerial vehicle that has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. Multirotors have found applications in a variety of different fields and they are used by scientists and researchers, commercial UAV companies and radio control enthusiasts alike. In this thesis a multirotor with eight rotors, also called an octorotor, is used. A physical model of the octorotor has been developed using theory from rigid body mechanics and aerodynamics. The unknown parameters in this model have been found using several identification experiments. The model has been used for controller design and comparison in a simulation environment. An attitude estimation algorithm has been designed and implemented on the target hardware. The algorithm is referred to as a nonlinear complementary filter and it uses a quaternion rotation representation and onboard measurements to compute an estimate of the current aircraft attitude. Two different attitude controllers have been designed and evaluated. The first controller is based on PID techniques which are commonly used in multirotor flight stabilization systems. The second controller uses a novel control structure based on L1 adaptive control techniques. A baseline attitude PD controller is augmented with an L1 adaptive controller in the rate feedback loop. The two controller structures are compared using a simulation environment based on the developed model of the octorotor. The results show that the proposed structure gives a notable performance increase with respect to robustness against modeling errors and input disturbance rejection compared to the PID controller. However, the L1 adaptive controller is more complex to implement and gives less noise attenuation. The PID controller has been implemented on the platform's hardware and initial flight tests have been performed with promising results. / En multirotor är en typ av flygande farkost som har fått mycket uppmärksamhet under senare år. Multirotorer tillämpas inom flertalet områden och de används av bland annat forskare och vetenskapsmän, kommersiella UAV- företag samt hobbyentusiaster. I detta examensarbete används en multirotor med åtta rotorer, en så kallad oktakopter. En fysikalisk modell av oktakoptern har tagits fram med hjälp av teori från stelkroppsmekanik och aerodynamik. De okända parametrarna i modellen har skattats med hjälp av ett flertal identifieringsexperiment. Modellen har använts för att designa och jämföra regulatorer i en simuleringsmiljö. En algoritm för att skatta farkostens attityd har designats och implementerats på oktakopterns hårdvara. Algoritmen är en variant av ett olinjärt komplementärt filter och använder en kvaternionrepresentation av attitydvinklar och uppmätt sensordata för att skatta farkostens nuvarande attityd. Två olika attitydregulatorer har designats och utvärderats. Den första regulatorn är baserad på PID-teknik vilket är vanligt för stabilisering av multirotorsystem. Den andra regulatorn använder en ny regulatorstruktur baserad på L1-adaptiv teknik. En grundregulator av PD-typ utökas med en L1-adaptiv regulator i vinkelhastighetsloopen. De två regulatorstrukturerna jämförs i en simuleringsmiljö baserad på den framtagna modellen av oktakoptern. Resultaten visar att den föreslagna regulatorstrukturen ger en betydande prestandaökning gällande robusthet mot modellfel och undertryckning av ingångsstörningar jämfört med PID-regulatorn. Dock är L1-regulatorn mer komplex att implementera och den ger mindre brusundertryckning. PID-regulatorn har implementerats på plattformens hårdvara och inledande flygtester har genomförts med lovande resultat.

Design of an adaptive power system stabilizer

Modern power networks are being driven ever closer to both their physical and operational limits. As a result, control systems are being increasingly relied on to assure satisfactory system performance. Power system stabilizers (PSSs) are one example of such controllers. Their purpose is to increase system damping and they are typically designed using a model of the network that is valid during nominal operating conditions. The limitation of this design approach is that during off-nominal operating conditions, such as those triggered by daily load fluctuations, performance of the controller can degrade. The research presented in this report attempts to evaluate the possibility of employing an adaptive PSS as a means of avoiding the performance degradation precipitated by off-nominal operation. Conceptually, an adaptive PSS would be capable of identifying changes in the network and then adjusting its parameters to ensure suitable damping of the identified network. This work begins with a detailed look at the identification algorithm employed followed by a similarly detailed examination of the control algorithm that was used. The results of these two investigations are then combined to allow for a preliminary assessment of the performance that could be expected from an adaptive PSS. The results of this research suggest that an adaptive PSS is a possibility but further work is needed to confirm this finding. Testing using more complex network models must be carried out, details pertaining to control parameter tuning must be resolved and closed-loop time domain simulations using the adaptive PSS design remain to be performed.

Power System Dynamics Enhancement Through Phase Unbalanced and Adaptive Control Schemes in Series FACTS devices

This thesis presents novel series compensation schemes and adaptive control techniques to enhance power system dynamics through damping Subsynchronous Resonance (SSR) and low-frequency power oscillations: local and inter-area oscillations. Series capacitive compensation of transmission lines is used to improve power transfer capability of the transmission line and is economical compared to the addition of new lines. However, one of the impeding factors for the increased utilization of series capacitive compensation is the potential risk of SSR, where electrical energy is exchanged with turbine-generator shaft systems in a growing manner which can result in shaft damage. Furthermore, the fixed capacitor does not provide controllable reactance and does not aid in the low-frequency oscillations damping. The Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) controllers have the flexibility of controlling both real and reactive power which could provide an excellent capability for improving power system dynamics. Several studies have investigated the potential of using this capability in mitigating the low-frequency (electromechanical) as well as the subsynchronous resonance (SSR) oscillations. However, the practical implementations of FACTS devices are very limited due to their high cost. To address this issue, this thesis proposes a new series capacitive compensation concept capable of enhancing power system dynamics. The idea behind the concept is a series capacitive compensation which provides balanced compensation at the power frequency while it provides phase unbalance at other frequencies of oscillations. The compensation scheme is a combination of a single-phase Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) or Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) and a fixed series capacitors in series in one phase of the compensated transmission line and fixed capacitors on the other two phases. The proposed scheme is economical compared to a full three-phase FACTS counterpart and improves reliability of the device by reducing number of switching components. The phase unbalance during transients reduces the coupling strength between the mechanical and the electrical system at asynchronous oscillations, thus suppressing the build-up of torsional stresses on the generator shaft systems. The SSR oscillations damping capability of the schemes is validated through detailed time-domain electromagnetic transient simulation studies on the IEEE first and second benchmark models. Furthermore, as the proposed schemes provide controllable reactance through TCSC or SSSC, the supplementary controllers can be implemented to damp low-frequency power oscillations as well. The low-frequency damping capability of the schemes is validated through detail time-domain electromagnetic transient simulation studies on two machines systems connected to a very large system and a three-area, six-machine power system. The simulation studies are carried out using commercially available electromagnetic transient simulation tools (EMTP-RV and PSCAD/EMTDC). An adaptive controller consisting of a robust on-line identifier, namely a robust Recursive Least Square (RLS), and a Pole-Shift (PS) controller is also proposed to provide optimal damping over a wide range of power system operations. The proposed identifier penalizes large estimated errors and smooth-out the change in parameters during large power system disturbances. The PS control is ideal for its robustness and stability conditions. The combination results in a computationally efficient estimator and a controller suitable for optimal control over wider range of operations of a non-linear system such as power system. The most important aspect of the controller is that it can be designed with an approximate linearized model of the complete power system, and does not need to be re-tuned after it is commissioned. The damping capability of such controller is demonstrated through detail studies on a three-area test system and on an IEEE 12-bus test system. Finally, the adaptive control algorithm is developed on a Digital Signal Processing Board, and the performance is experimentally tested using hardware-in-the-loop studies. For this purpose, a Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) is used, which is capable of simulating power system in real-time at 50 µs simulation time step. The RTDS facilitates the performance evaluation of a controller just like testing on a real power system. The experimental results match closely with the simulation results; which demonstrated the practical applicability of the adaptive controller in power systems. The proposed controller is computationally efficient and simple to implement in DSP hardware.

Nonlinear pose control and estimation for space proximity operations: an approach based on dual quaternions

The term proximity operations has been widely used in recent years to describe a wide range of space missions that require a spacecraft to remain close to another space object. Such missions include, for example, the inspection, health monitoring, surveillance, servicing, and refueling of a space asset by another spacecraft. One of the biggest challenges in autonomous space proximity operations, either cooperative or uncooperative, is the need to autonomously and accurately track time-varying relative position and attitude references, i.e., pose references, with respect to a moving target, in order to avoid on-orbit collisions and achieve the overall mission goals. In addition, if the target spacecraft is uncooperative, the Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) system of the chaser spacecraft must not rely on any help from the target spacecraft. In this case, vision-based sensors, such as cameras, are typically used to measure the relative pose between the spacecraft. Although vision-based sensors have several attractive properties, they introduce new challenges, such as no direct linear and angular velocity measurements, slow update rates, and high measurement noise. This dissertation investigates the problem of autonomously controlling and estimating the pose of a chaser spacecraft with respect to a moving target spacecraft, possibly uncooperative. Since this problem is inherently hard, the standard approach in the literature is to split the attitude-tracking problem from the position-tracking problem. Whereas the attitude-tracking problem is relatively simple, since the rotational motion is independent from the translational motion, the position-tracking problem is more complicated, as the translational motion depends on the rotational motion. Hence, whereas strong theoretical results exist for the attitude problem, the position problem typically requires additional assumptions. An alternative, more general approach to the pose control and estimation problems is to consider the fully coupled 6-DOF motion. However, fewer results exist that directly address this higher dimensional problem. The main contribution of this dissertation is to show that dual quaternions can be used to extend the theoretical results that exist for the attitude motion into analogous results for the combined position and attitude motion. Moreover, this dissertation shows that this can be accomplished by (almost) just replacing quaternions by dual quaternions in the original derivations. This is because dual quaternions are built on and are an extension of classical quaternions. Dual quaternions provide a compact representation of the pose of a frame with respect to another frame. Using this approach, three new results are presented in this dissertation. First, a pose-tracking controller that does not require relative linear and angular velocity measurements is derived with vision-based sensors in mind. Compared to existing literature, the proposed velocity-free pose-tracking controller guarantees that the pose of the chaser spacecraft will converge to the desired pose independently of the initial state, even if the reference motion is not sufficiently exciting. In addition, the convergence region does not depend on the gains of the controller. Second, a Dual Quaternion Multiplicative Extended Kalman Filter (DQ-MEKF) is developed from the highly successful Quaternion MEKF (Q-MEKF) as an alternative way to achieve pose-tracking without velocity measurements. Existing dual quaternion EKFs are additive, not multiplicative, and have two additional states. The DQ-MEKF is experimentally validated and compared with two conventional EKFs on the 5-DOF platform of the Autonomous Spacecraft Testing of Robotic Operations in Space (ASTROS) facility at the School of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech. Finally, the velocity-free pose-tracking controller is compared qualitatively and quantitatively to a pose-tracking controller that uses the velocity estimates produced by the DQ-MEKF through a realistic proximity operations simulation. Third, a pose-tracking controller that does not require the mass and inertia matrix of the chaser satellite is suggested. This inertia-free controller takes into account the gravitational acceleration, the gravity-gradient torque, the perturbing acceleration due to Earth's oblateness, and constant -- but otherwise unknown -- disturbance forces and torques. Sufficient conditions on the reference pose are also given that guarantee the identification of the mass and inertia matrix of the satellite. Compared to the existing literature, this controller has only as many states as unknown elements and it does not require a priori known upper bounds on any states or parameters. Finally, the inertia-free pose-tracking controller and the DQ-MEKF are tested on a high-fidelity simulation of the 5-DOF platform of the ASTROS facility and also experimentally validated on the actual platform. The equations of motion of the 5-DOF platform, on which the high-fidelity simulation is based, are derived for three distinct cases: a 3-DOF case, a 5-DOF case, and a (2+1)-DOF case. Four real-time experiments were run on the platform. In the first, a sinusoidal reference attitude with respect to the inertial frame is tracked using VSCMGs. In the second, a constant reference attitude is maintained with respect to a target object using VSCMGs and measurements from a camera. In the third, the same sinusoidal reference attitude with respect to the inertial frame tracked in the first experiment is now tracked using cold-gas thrusters. Finally, in the fourth and last experiment, a time-varying 5-DOF reference pose with respect to the inertial frame is tracked using cold-gas thrusters.

Robust and Adaptive Control Methods for Small Aerial Vehicles

Recent advances in sensor and microcomputer technology and in control and aeroydynamics theories has made small unmanned aerial vehicles a reality. The small size, low cost and manoueverbility of these systems has positioned them to be potential solutions in a large class of applications. However, the small size of these vehicles pose significant challenges. The small sensors used on these systems are much noisier than their larger counterparts.The compact structure of these vehicles also makes them more vulnerable to environmental effects. This work develops several different control strategies for two sUAV platforms and provides the rationale for judging each of the controllers based on a derivation of the dynamics, simulation studies and experimental results where possible. First, the coaxial helicopter platform is considered. This sUAV’s dual rotor system (along with its stabilizer bar technology) provides the ideal platform for safe, stable flight in a compact form factor. However, the inherent stability of the vehicle is achieved at the cost of weaker control authority and therefore an inability to achieve aggressive trajectories especially when faced with heavy wind disturbances. Three different linear control strategies are derived for this platform. PID, LQR and H∞ methods are tested in simulation studies. While the PID method is simple and intuitive, the LQR method is better at handling the decoupling required in the system. However the frequency domain design of the H∞ control method is better at suppressing disturbances and tracking more aggressive trajectories. The dynamics of the quadrotor are much faster than those of the coaxial helicopter. In the quadrotor, four independent fixed pitch rotors provide the required thrust. Differences between each of the rotors creates moments in the roll, pitch and yaw directions. This system greatly simplifies the mechanical complexity of the UAV, making quadrotors cheaper to maintain and more accessible. The quadrotor dynamics are derived in this work. Due to the lack of any mechanical stabilization system, these quadrotor dynamics are not inherently damped around hover. As such, the focus of the controller development is on using nonlinear techniques. Linear quadratic regulation methods are derived and shown to be inadequate when used in zones moderately outside hover. Within nonlinear methods, feedback linearization techniques are developed for the quadrotor using an inner/outer loop decoupling structure that avoids more complex variants of the feedback linearization methodology. Most nonlinear control methods (including feedback linearization) assume perfect knowledge of vehicle parameters. In this regard, simulation studies show that when this assumption is violated the results of the flight significantly deteriorate for quadrotors flying using the feedback linearization method. With this in mind, an adaptation law is devised around the nonlinear control method that actively modifies the plant parameters in an effort to drive tracking errors to zero. In simple cases with sufficiently rich trajectory requirements the parameters are able to adapt to the correct values (as verified by simulation studies). It can also adapt to changing parameters in flight to ensure that vehicle stability and controller performance is not compromised. However, the direct adaptive control method devised in this work has the added benefit of being able to modify plant parameters to suppress the effects of external disturbances as well. This is clearly shown when wind disturbances are applied to the quadrotor simulations. Finally, the nonlinear quadrotor controllers devised above are tested on a custom built quadrotor and autopilot platform. While the custom quadrotor is able to fly using the standard control methods, the specific controllers devised here are tested on a test bench that constrains the movement of the vehicle. The results of the tests show that the controller is able to sufficiently change the necessary parameter to ensure effective tracking in the presence of unmodelled disturbances and measurement error.

Neural network based adaptive control for autonomous flight of fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicles

This thesis presents the development of small, inexpensive unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to achieve autonomous fight. Fixed wing hobby model planes are modified and instrumented to form experimental platforms. Different sensors employed to collect the flight data are discussed along with their calibrations. The time constant and delay for the servo-actuators for the platform are estimated. Two different data collection and processing units based on micro-controller and PC104 architectures are developed and discussed. These units are also used to program the identification and control algorithms. Flight control of fixed wing UAVs is a challenging task due to the coupled, time-varying, nonlinear dynamic behaviour. One of the possible alternatives for the flight control system is to use the intelligent adaptive control techniques that provide online learning capability to cope with varying dynamics and disturbances. Neural network based indirect adaptive control strategy is applied for the current work. The two main components of the adaptive control technique are the identification block and the control block. Identification provides a mathematical model for the controller to adapt to varying dynamics. Neural network based identification provides a black-box identification technique wherein a suitable network provides prediction capability based upon the past inputs and outputs. Auto-regressive neural networks are employed for this to ensure good retention capabilities for the model that uses the past outputs and inputs along with the present inputs. Online and offline identification of UAV platforms are discussed based upon the flight data. Suitable modifications to the Levenberg-Marquardt training algorithm for online training are proposed. The effect of varying the different network parameters on the performance of the network are numerically tested out. A new performance index is proposed that is shown to improve the accuracy of prediction and also reduces the training time for these networks. The identification algorithms are validated both numerically and flight tested. A hardware-in-loop simulation system has been developed to test the identification and control algorithms before flight testing to identify the problems in real time implementation on the UAVs. This is developed to keep the validation process simple and a graphical user interface is provided to visualise the UAV flight during simulations. A dual neural network controller is proposed as the adaptive controller based upon the identification models. This has two neural networks collated together. One of the neural networks is trained online to adapt to changes in the dynamics. Two feedback loops are provided as part of the overall structure that is seen to improve the accuracy. Proofs for stability analysis in the form of convergence of the identifier and controller networks based on Lyapunov's technique are presented. In this analysis suitable bounds on the rate of learning for the networks are imposed. Numerical results are presented to validate the adaptive controller for single-input single-output as well as multi-input multi-output subsystems of the UAV. Real time validation results and various flight test results confirm the feasibility of the proposed adaptive technique as a reliable tool to achieve autonomous flight. The comparison of the proposed technique with a baseline gain scheduled controller both in numerical simulations as well as test flights bring out the salient adaptive feature of the proposed technique to the time-varying, nonlinear dynamics of the UAV platforms under different flying conditions.
