From Airport to Spaceport: Designing for an Aerospace Revolution

Selvidge, Paula 13 April 2010 (has links)
"Airports will shape business location and urban development in the 21st century as much as highways did in the 20th century, railroads in the 19th and seaports in the 18th" - John D. Kasarda, Ph.D. Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina http://www.aerotropolis.com/author.html I say, spaceports will shape the urban development of the 21st century, more than airports, bringing about an aerospace revolution. Just as new technologies triggered the global revolutions of the past, so the invention of reusable spacecraft will revolutionize transportation. The invention of such spacecraft suggests the need for a different kind of transportation hub: a spaceport. Not unlike an airport, a spaceport would be a center for transportation, but both terrestrial and extraterrestrial. Commercializing space travel would improve the efficiency of world travel and impact the cultural perspective of the world at large. This new transport nexus would not only need to accommodate new modes of operation, but would need to respond to the emerging global society. An all-inclusive spaceport, it would become a city unto itself. A study of the changing world and the spiraling correlation between technological advancement and cultural development, in relation to the architecture of transport facilities, is the focus of the following thesis investigation. A correlative study of airports, airport terminals, and the evolution of airports into aerotropoli due to globalization, provides the ground work for the development of an urban spaceport. Restrictions and opportunities relevant to spaceport and aerospace terminal design are explored. An extensive investigation in the field of urban planning, transportation, and space travel, along with some speculation, reveals the implications that a commercial space program might have on society and architecture. Then, research into the programming and design of spaceports acts as a spring-board for the design process. Though no commercial spaceports exist as of yet, a conceptual study provides insight into the extraterrestrial side of the operations. Finally, a spaceport masterplan and aerospace terminal that responds to the needs and concerns of the global community, as well as attempts to fulfill its dreams, is proposed as a precedent for redevelopment and implementation in the near future.

This research has as a general objective the identification of strategic information that forms the models of airports and aerotropolises, in order to ascertain the coming together of knowledge in Information Science and Administration in strategic actions of interdisciplinary nature between these two areas. It is an exploratory investigation, since it is carried out in an area where there is little accumulated and systematized knowledge. The review of literarure was systematized in the conceptualization and deepening of the idea of the aerotropolis, as well as in the conceptualization of the disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity of the subject, consolidating the strategic management of information and competitive intelligence, together with other aspects of information between the two disciplines. Still in relation to the means of investigation, this study presents a quali-quantitative character, by the use of semi-structured interviews, observation, and questionnaires via internet. The main results reveal a difference in perspective between the group that answered and work in the development of an aerotropolis and those who know or relate themselves with an aerotropolis, as regards the environmental mapping and the use of strategic information, in the sectors: Airport, Airport City, and Aerotropolis/City. The results of this research led to the proposal of a site for aerotroplis aiming at the increase of systematization and availability of information.

It is a research where the airport becomes protagonist in the discussion of the re-signification of an area within a perspective of integration of the city and the region on the global markets of production and consumption. The main objective of the thesis is to analyze how the territory, covered by the new economic and industrial activities, turns into an airport-city and gains regional momentum, being able to constitute an Aerotropolis. It is assumed that the facilities of the International Airport of Viracopos-Campinas (VCP), can, possibly, be transformed into an airport-city and shape the surrounding region on an Aerotropolis; however, it will not serve the public interest in the urban requalification of the region, historically marked by inequality and socio-spatial segregation if it does not maintain and incorporate the resident population in the construction of Aerotropolis. This thesis is based on studies carried out on two international airports with a strong presence in airfreight transport in their countries (Netherlands and United States) to understand the city-region-production-networks-territory relationship on which the Aerotropolis territorial arrangement is based.

An Inquiry Into The Architectural Program Of The Contemporary Airports

Kaya, Asli 01 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Architectural program of airports has evolved from being a mere transportation space into a &ldquo / city&rdquo / containing various activities along with transportation at its core. This thesis aims to discuss and criticize it, by arguing that the city and the airport are to be integrated by giving a special importance to the user (both the passenger and the inhabitant of the city). The discussion is focused on three dialectically related constituents of the program: Process, User and Product (building). Rather than the architectural design process generating the built form, process refers to the influential actors in shaping the space of airport. User refers to both the active and passive actors of the organization of space. Product denotes the space itself, transformed according to the wishes and demands of both the user and the mode of production. These constituents are accepted as significant factors in the development of the airport architectural program in a way to answer the requirements of the integration with the city. In contemporary airports, users do not have enough rights over the space to be able to show their existence against the domination of capital&#039 / s spaces. Therefore, this thesis proposes an alternative airport architectural program integrating the airport with the city by placing the user at the center.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Larissa Ferrer Branco1.pdf: 18883560 bytes, checksum: ef9f94d7cb059c6eaa33c3e2358e6e28 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-07-26 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / Due to the increasing complexity and significance for the modern societies, Airports has become recognized by urban managers and citizens not only by its aeronautical role as an aircraft, passenger and cargo platforms, but specially by their unique ability to provide better and more efficient urban answers to several social and economic requests. This changes in the Airport roles has created strong moves on the urban planning and management, including the need for reshaping the relationship between them and its neighbors, cities and regions, requesting innovative approaches on the way their managers and the urban planners are having to deal with new land framing and allocation, innovative and more effective urban and aeronautical policies and regulation in order to conciliate different concerns coming from the several political and institutional scales (at the local, regional, national and international levels). Taking into account this new Airports roles and its ability to promote urban and regional development, this essay came trough some international Airport Centered Urban Development models, trying to point out the main features, weaknesses and strengths recognized in Airport-‐Industry, Airport-‐City, Aerotropolis and Airport-‐Corridor concepts. At the local level, we took three different Brazilian examples (located at São Paulo's Macrometropolis), with different sizes and vocations, trying to point what could be taken in advantage from the international models to enhance the local examples, mainly at the urban and at the infrastructure management, in order to produce and to optimize the Airports as urban, social and economic development factor for the cities and regions where they are currently located.
