Previous issue date: 2017-05-25 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This research aims at discussing scientifically and methodologically the teaching practice of the Legion of Good Will (LGW). The LGW applies in its schools located in the Brazilian cities of Belém/PA, Curitiba/PR, Taguatinga/DF, Rio de Janeiro/RJ and São Paulo/SP, and also in Buenos Aires/Argentina, Asunción/Paraguay and Montevideo/Uruguay, a complementary program for the curricular matrix with thematic axles of spirituality. It considers that the individuals‘ scientific knowledge and subjectivity may walk side-by-side taking into account the wholeness of the students, in such a way that the academic initiatives do not limit themselves to a systematic replication of the contents historically organized in the curricula. However, may the academic activities mobilize the students to understand the heritage left by past generations, with their life stories, motivating them to reflect upon what legacy do they intend on leaving for the future, as a new generation. The teaching practice researched considers that all areas of knowledge have convergent points and, based on this principle, some questions appear, as for example: How can the teachers target their practices to meet the curricular requirements of Basic Education, in its different investigation perspectives, and still stimulate the exchange of knowledge, the collaborative interpersonal experience between students and teachers? By doing so, how can they contribute to the humanization of the learning environment and guarantee the intellectual success of the students, as well as their emotional maturity and social empowerment? Does the proposal of the LGW of analyzing the curriculum demand a profound look upon the issues of interdisciplinarity? The school here researched considers appropriate the mediation between the curriculum content and the discussions in society, so that the social, ethical, political, and philosophical implications may awaken the students to a broader look upon things, free from preconceptions. The methodology used in the research was based on the premises of participant observation, explained by Pedro Demo and Carlos Rodrigues Brandão. Its main instrument is the systematic analysis of the school environment on its daily basis activities, recording and examining the data, and elaborating institutional documents that point to information related to the system, space, and time of its occurrence.

An analysis of the importance of formal education as migrants' livelihood strategy : a case study of Congolese graduates in Durban.Kipili, Kaunda Dieudonne. 06 October 2014 (has links)
The survival of the majority of refugees in their host countries is characterised by poverty resulting from different sets of vulnerabilities. Formal education/training appears to offer the only opportunity for refugees to improve their survival chances. This study examined formal education/training as a livelihood strategy of Congolese refugees who have graduated in different fields of study in South Africa and are currently living in Durban and what have been its outcomes. This study found that, though formal education/training has the potential to improve the livelihood opportunities of Congolese refugees who graduated in South Africa, by increasing their chances of accessing better pay employment and improving their well-being, it still needs to be strengthened through the protection and promotion of refugees’ rights, a change in public attitude towards refugees and the careful selection of fields of study.
In order for formal education/training to effect sustainable positive changes in the lives of respondents, there is also a need to formulate and implement supportive policies and legislations with the view to address specific livelihood challenges pointed out in this study. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2013.

Emotional intelligence : attrition and attainment in nursing and midwifery educationRankin, Robert F. January 2009 (has links)
Attrition in Higher Education continues to present academics, researchers and professionals with an ongoing dilemma. Achieving a fair balance between the academic rigour of meritocracy and the wider access agenda of social inclusion, demands that entrance criteria incorporates measures beyond the traditional prior academic attainment. Emotional Intelligence has been presented in the literature as a valid and reliable predictor of retention and performance in industry and researchers have suggested that similar benefits may be found in education. In this dissertation, the construct of Emotional Intelligence was explored, reviewing contemporary models and their respective measurement tools. A self report tool for measuring ‘trait’ Emotional Intelligence was selected from the review and used to examine the predictive relationship between emotional intelligence and the outcomes at the end of the first year of undergraduate nurse education namely: clinical practice performance; academic performance and course attrition by nursing and midwifery students. The sample group consisted of a cohort of student nurses and midwives (N = 178) who commenced their training in 2007. A significant predictive relationship was found between emotional intelligence and clinical practice performance (r = 0.75, N = 116, p < 0.05); emotional intelligence and academic performance (r = 0.16, N = 168, p < 0.05) and emotional intelligence and attrition (r = 0.31, N = 178, p < 0.05). Age was also found to predict attrition (r = 0.25, N = 178, p < 0.05) while prior academic attainment was found to predict academic performance (r = 0.20, N = 168, p < 0.05). The dissertation proposes the inclusion of measures of emotional intelligence as an aid to recruitment and selection processes in nurse and midwifery education. It also recommends that other practice based vocational programmes, within the higher education sector, consider exploring emotional intelligence in their recruitment and selection processes.

Construct Validation of the Social-Emotional Character Development Scale in Belize: Measurement Invariance Through Exploratory Structural Equation ModelingHinerman, Krystal M. 08 1900 (has links)
Social-emotional learning (SEL) measures assessing social-emotional learning and character development across a broad array of constructs have been developed but lack construct validity. Determining the efficacy of educational interventions requires structurally valid measures which are generalizable across settings, gender, and time. Utilizing recent factor analytic methods, the present study extends validity literature for SEL measures by investigating the structural validity and generalizability of the Social-Emotional and Character Development Scale (SECDS) with a large sample of children from schools in Belize (n = 1877, ages 8 to13). The SECDS exhibited structural and generalizability evidence of construct validity when examined under exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM). While a higher order confirmatory factor structure with six secondary factors provided acceptable fit, the ESEM six-factor structure provided both substantive and methodological advantages. The ESEM structural model situates the SECDS into the larger body of SEL literature while also exhibiting generalizability evidence over both gender and time.

Crossing the Cartesian divide : an investigation into the role of emotion in science learningStaus, Nancy L. (Nancy Lynn) 02 March 2012 (has links)
Although many science educators and researchers believe that emotion is an important part of the learning process, few researchers have dealt with the topic in a systematic fashion. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of emotion in the learning process, particularly in the learning of science content. My study utilized a dimensional perspective which defined emotion in terms of arousal and valence, and drew on research from the fields of psychology and neuroscience to examine how emotion affects different aspects of cognition such as attention and memory. On the basis of these findings, I developed and tested a path model to investigate the predicted relationships among emotional arousal, valence, attention, intrinsic motivation and short- and long-term learning outcomes.
I conducted the study in two phases. The first phase took place in a psychology laboratory in which participants watched either an exciting or neutral nature video, read a factual article related to the video and were tested on their learning. The second phase took place at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in which participants watched a narrated otter or sea lion presentation and took a short posttest after the show. In both phases, participants' emotional arousal, valence, attention, and motivation levels were also measured for inclusion in the model.
The results indicated that emotional arousal was an important predictor of short-term learning in both experiments although its effect was fully mediated by attention at the aquarium. In addition, negative valence (displeasure) and intrinsic motivation were strong predictors of short-term learning in the laboratory experiment. At the aquarium, the narrator of the animal presentation strongly affected both attention and short-term learning—visitors who listened to a non-scripted rather than a scripted narration paid more attention and had significantly better short-term learning outcomes. In the aquarium study, emotional arousal correlated strongly with several measures of long-term learning. In particular, those who felt more arousal during the animal presentation were able to describe their experience at greater length and with more detail and complexity two to three months after their visit.
My findings suggest that emotional arousal is an important component of science learning both directly and through its relationship with attention. Therefore, science educators in both informal and formal learning institutions may be able to increase both attention and learning outcomes by designing emotionally arousing learning experiences around the science content they wish to teach. In addition, the importance of narrator quality in the aquarium study suggests that narrators and teachers should be trained to deliver information in such a way that supports short- and long-term science learning. / Graduation date: 2012

The African philosophical concept of Ubuntu as applied to the Emotional Intelligence of adolescents : challenging the appropriateness of Western-derived conceptsMankowitz, Debra J. 11 1900 (has links)
The study assessed the Emotional Intelligence/Ubuntu understanding in sixteen learners aged 11-14 from both the Low SES and High SES levels, which includes the peri- urban/disadvantaged/informal settlements and the urban/privileged areas.
The research motivated towards the conception that an inclusive Eurocentric and African approach towards education could benefit South African adolescent learners emotionally, socially and academically. Notwithstanding, providing an Emotional Intelligence framework that includes tenets of the African Philosophical paradigm of Ubuntu could enable adolescent learners to feel more empowered when confronting their socio- economic challenges. Hence, the purpose of this study was to ascertain whether the lack of formal EI/Ubuntu skills training in schools leaves learners without the competences to surmount the many challenges adolescents face during the turbulent phase of early adolescence. The aim of this study was to assess the levels of EI in a sample of adolescents from both SES levels. Qualitative methods were used in order to ascertain the impact of Western and Ubuntu epistemologies/worldviews on the adolescent learners’ Emotional Intelligence. This study also sought to determine the impact of education and role models on this sample of adolescent learners' EI/Ubuntu levels. This research also investigated how the merged EI/Ubuntu concepts can be incorporated into a life skills programme aimed at enhancing EI/Ubuntu in South African adolescent learners. In this study both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using the convergent parallel mixed method study and the paradigms that informed the study includes pragmatism, interpretivism, positivism and post-positivism. The objectives of this study includes identifying the emotional needs and EI status of adolescent learners and to investigate to what extent these are being met in the current educational system in South Africa.
The research noted the contextual factors that influence EI in adolescent learners. The research explored how adolescents align their behaviour with the values and virtues of EI and Ubuntu. The following tools were used to accomplish the aforementioned objectives; a short introduction to Ubuntu, the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire - Adolescent Short Form (TEIQue-ASF) questionnaire was utilised to obtain a measure of the individual learner’s EI. A biographical questionnaire was given to all learners in order to establish what contextual factors impact on EI/Ubuntu consciousness. An Ubuntu style
10-item questionnaire to obtain insight into individual learners’ conceptualisation of EI. A short paragraph of approximately 300 words allowed for the narrative of each learner to be explored and a 22-item semi-structured parent/teacher interview from both SES groups. Role-playing scenarios were enacted to assess the depth of EI through the identification and understanding that took place between the players and draw a person diagrams (DAP) were utilised and assessed for EI aspects such as self-esteem, levels of confidence and awareness of self. The most pertinent aspects that were revealed by this study was that Low SES learners, especially those that lived in corrugated housing felt a sense of helplessness, fear and social alienation when challenged by their extreme living conditions. The study also revealed that the High SES group struggled at forming meaningful relationships and felt panicked and stressed regarding their academic responsibilities and outcomes. Hence as both groups struggled socially, they relied on technology and Western materialism to fill the void. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Exploring the impact of emotional intelligence training in the workplaceVan Rensburg, Anna Susanna Jansen 11 1900 (has links)
Text in English / Exploring the Impact of Emotional Intelligence Training in the Workplace.
The complexity of mental development in humans together with human interaction
in the social context presents itself to be a continued source of investigation and
exploration. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is such a field of study in the discipline of
psychology. Researchers emphasized the importance and value of emotional
development ("soft-skills") equal to cognitive development (“hard-skills”). EI
abilities are associated with key skills and competencies required for operating
successfully in today’s organizations. This study focused on this theme
specifically and tried to determine how EI training impacted on the success of the
individual who fits the modern working profile and how emotionally intelligent
employees are beneficial to organisational success overall.
An ethnographic qualitative study (including an autoethnography) was performed
on individuals of different participant groupings who completed the Neuro-Link EI
Program. The aim was to assess if they showed increased growth in areas of EI,
specifically addressed in the program namely self-awareness, self-management,
social awareness, and social management. Findings indicated that EI training
works with positive results. It was of great value to the individual having an
immense impact on their personal lives. It further had a major positive impact on
the group dynamics of individuals who attended the training. At companies where
facilitators presented the program, EI training had a positive impact. A conclusion
on the impact that such training had on the two companies whose staff members
directly participated in this study, was not yet possible at the time of the study.
The development of an awareness model for the promotion of EI training in the
workplace is recommended. This may increase available knowledge regarding
corporate EI training but also accelerates an emerging, but a too slowly growing
movement. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)
