Drinking to Cope in College Aged Students: The Relationship Between Negative Affect, Stress, Avoidant Coping, and Alcohol and Drug Use

January 2017 (has links)
acase@tulane.edu / Alcohol and drug use to cope is a common phenomenon that is found in those who are of college age. Drinking and drug use to cope has negative short- and long-term outcomes including chronic disease and possibly death. Alcohol and drug use to cope may be more common when individuals are not able allocate other resources in order to cope with their strong uncomfortable feelings (specifically depression, anger, and anxiety) and stress. Women and people of color may be particularly vulnerable to these patterns of maladaptive coping. I hypothesize that increased negative affect, stress, and avoidant coping will be associated with more alcohol and drug use. I also predict that there will be increased alcohol and drug use behavior for women and people of color in the context of negative affect, stress, and avoidant coping. The AUDIT, Brief COPE, DASS, PROMIS Anger, PSS, Race-Related Stress Item, and AAQ-II were used in data collected cross-sectionally from 360 participants. Pearson’s correlations and multiple regressions were used to analyze the data. Men and women did not differ in their alcohol and drug use, though people of color did consume less alcohol then their white counterparts. Alcohol and drug use was highly correlated with negative affect and general stress. It also was found that men displayed more substance use behavior when faced with race-stress/perceived discrimination. Predicted relationships between race-related stress and alcohol and drug use and between avoidant coping and alcohol and drug use were not supported. In addition, none of the other hypothesized interactions were statistically significant predictors of alcohol and drug use. Implications for supporting college aged individuals are discussed. / 1 / Chinwendu Duru

The resistance and survival of old women : striving for empowerment in the face of oppression and violence

Mau, Sindy Kay 17 February 1997 (has links)
Old women face a unique set of obstacles in their quest for empowerment. In this study the concept of empowerment is explored by politicizing issues of personal safety. The most significant factors that impede an old woman's sense of safety and control include oppression, primarily ageism and sexism, along with violence and fear. For this study, thirty-nine women over sixty were self-selected for semi-structured interviews as a result of their participation in a personal safety workshop. Interviewees ranged in age from sixty to eight-three, were of diverse cultural backgrounds, and most resided in a metropolitan area. An emancipatory methodology was used as a means to empower participants throughout the research process. The study is both exploratory and interpretive, with the subjective voice of the researcher present throughout the project. Acts of resistance and survival were reflected in the daily lived experiences of the interviewees, validating the premise that old women face obstacles in their quest for empowerment. / Graduation date: 1997

The changing social position of the elderly in contemporary urban China

Lin, Pei, 1966- 29 February 1996 (has links)
This thesis uses an anthropological approach to examine the current social status of the young elderly in contemporary urban China and explores the problems these people are facing. A review of literature sets up complementary theoretical frameworks for the understanding of the interaction between changing social environment and transitional life experiences of the young elderly. Discussion of historical circumstances provides the background for transitions with reference to family structure, intergenerational relationships and family life in contemporary China. Discussion includes the role and effect of related state policies since the Communist Party came to power in 1949. Data were collected from eight case studies through personal interviews with Chinese students and their elderly parents in the United States. Other data came from several informants interviewed by the author in China. Analysis focuses on the changing financial, emotional and physical status of the elderly within the social, economic and political context of urban China. Results of the study show that the social status of the elderly has changed in the direction of favoring younger generations. Elderly people in contemporary urban China are experiencing extreme challenges and various kinds of insecurities related to role transition. The state has played a critical role in leading to this situation. / Graduation date: 1996
