Radnice Brno – Sever / New town hall for the district Brno-NorthHavlíček, Jan January 2015 (has links)
The purpouse of this thesis was finding the way to design new city hall of district Brno - Sever. It builds on a urban study from previous semesters. I have found the pattern for my concept in ancient public proto-democratic structures - agoras, phorums. By creating some sort of a district with various (not only city hall) programmes, we gain a diversified, living and vibrant public spaces, outdoors as well as indoors.

Theoretical Architecture in Structures of Dense Urban ReformSimko, Charles A. 09 March 2006 (has links)
This paper identifies a range of elements and principles useful for the development of an urban theoretical architecture. Acceptance of nature as a design element and in particular the use of nature to bound nodes of high density development are explored. The use of fractal geometry to distribute the urban footprint upon the landscape is introduced along with a tacit development of methodology making the application of fractal geometry useful. Building height restrictions are suggested as usefull to create urban walls and maintain views for tall buildings. It is proposed that the basic unit of urban design and development is a high intensity urban cell. Elements crucial to the life of urban cells are identified. The importance of architectural character in developing the identity of urban space is reinforced and explored. / Master of Architecture

(Re)Discovering Civitas: The L.A.goraNewby, Douglas Russ 01 August 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study was the development of an architectural methodology capable of re-establishing polycentric civitas in the City of Los Angeles. To establish a new civic design framework for the city of Los Angeles, research and analysis was conducted in many fields using several different methods. A review of literature pertaining to the historic establishment of civitas serves an analysis of the different forms of public space in Western civilization. An analysis of urbanism in Los Angeles was conducted using existing literature related to the topic, while an analysis of the neighborhood chosen as the site for the “execution” of the methodology was performed through first-hand research and field study. This information was then synthesized, producing a building program customized to the Miracle Mile in Los Angeles. The final stage of the study was the design of this new civic core. In the context of the Miracle Mile—defined by the presence of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art—the proposed civic core took the form of an artist commune.
The study concludes that the re-establishment of polycentrism in Los Angeles, as a means for (re)discovering civitas, requires the development of several new alternative civic cores, dispersed throughout the urban fabric of the Los Angeles Basin. In order to effectively operate as sites of critical civic engagement, however, each core must be developed independently of the other, responding to specific micro-cultures. This study advocates choosing sites based on the presence of existing civic potentials. In this way, the alienating effects of tabula rasa city planning are avoided. The architectural project presented at the end of this study, should therefore be understood, not as an architectural prototype to be universally replicated across the city, but as a prototype for an architectural research method. In order to (re)discover civitas in Los Angeles, architects and urban planners must recognize the limitations of universal models and accept that the architectural spaces that define the civic realm must reflect the needs of the specific societies who will ultimately activate them.

Desmos: Design, Inventiveness and Collaboration in a Time of CrisisIkonomou, Athanasios 08 July 2013 (has links)
The modernist polykatikia typology (translating to multi-dwelling) arose in Athens after the population boom of the 1960s. Now sixty years later, the demands of the city have changed. No longer is there a need to build houses for people, but a need to focus on the workplace. As economic turmoil is pressuring Greece towards larger, more efficient operations, the thesis seeks to signify the importance of micro-economies of informal Athens. Given that energy and vibrancy are defining characteristics of the city, it considers how the workplace can intersect with public space to create new relationships in Athens. By curating talent, people and expertise which already exist in Athens, the aim is to propose workplaces based on resource sharing within underutilized zones in the city: an urban gesture which re-imagines the city blocks of Athens as a system of micro-agoras.

Previous issue date: 2018-03-29 / This research brings a study of the effects of digital communication in popular journalism practiced in Brazil. For that, Extra and Agora São Paulo newspapers were selected. These newspapers are published by two of the largest communication groups in the country (Globo and Folha), were born in print and represent the model of popular journalism based on service inaugurated in the later years 1990. Based on the concepts of popular journalism proposed by Márcia Franz Amaral and on-line journalism presented by Ramón Salaverría and João Canavilhas, the study initially discusses the importance of popular newspapers, their characteristics, the sensationalism that permeates the segment and the evolution of digital communication. The work brings an analysis of the homepages and social media Facebook and Twitter of the two newspapers, based on tools proposed by Marcos Palacios, and presents interviews with editors of the two media outlets to understand the editorial choices in the online environment and to know the impacts of the digital communication in the work of professionals in popular journalism. The results of the research indicate that Extra is at a more advanced stage of online journalism and has been using digital tools for journalistic production for a longer period of time. It offers multimedia and interactive content for its readers and has intense action in social networks. Agora has a production still focused on the printed platform and begins to crawl in the digital world. It presents a totally static site and its presence in social media is small. The two newspapers, however, keep present in the online medium the main news values of popular service journalism: entertainment, proximity and utility. The two vehicles are undergoing major transformation periods: Extra newsroom has been unified with O Globo newspaper, and Agora is preparing to launch a totally redesigned new website and to expand its activities in social media. The transformations bring new impacts to the two vehicles, which currently use different strategies in the digital environment. This work presents the performance of Extra and Agora in the online medium so far and the scenarios that each one lives in the moment, which should mean new modifications in each of them.
