Finding the shipboard relative position of a rotary wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with ultasonic ranging

Gleeson, Jeremy, Information Technology & Electrical Engineering, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 2008 (has links)
Simple, cheap and reliable echo-based ultrasonic ranging systems such as the Polaroid ranging unit are easily applied to indoor applications. However, to measure the range between an unmanned helicopter and a moving ship deck at sea using ultrasound requires a more robust ranging system, because rushing air and breaking water are known ultrasound noise sources. The work of designing, constructing and testing such a system is described in this dissertation. The compact, UAV ready ultrasound transmitter module provides high power, broadband arbitrary signal generation. The separate field-ready receiver is based on a modern embedded Digital Signal Processor (DSP), providing high speed matched-filter correlation processing. Large time-bandwidth signalling is employed to maximise the signal to noise ratio of the ranging system. Synthesised experiments demonstrate the ability of the correlation processing to reliably recover timing from signals buried in noise. Real world experiments demonstrate decimetre accuracy with two centimetre resolution, ten metre range and 32Hz refresh rate. A maximum boresight range of up to 38m is supported.

Civilní letectví v EU a ČR z pohledu unijního práva / Civil aviation in the EU and the CR from the perspective of Union law

Čech, Martin January 2016 (has links)
143 Abstract The present diploma thesis is dedicated to European civil aviation and in particular to the regulation of provision of air navigation services and air traffic management. The purpose of the thesis is to analyse the evolution of the legislative reform of air navigation services and air traffic management in Europe with a focus on the influence of European Union law through the initiative "Single European Sky". Next, the thesis aims to study the main elements of the modernisation efforts and to point at the transformation of the situation and relationships between the relevant stakeholders as results from the new form of the regulatory and institutional framework. First chapter presents the principle of state sovereignty over the airspace which constitutes the fundamental principle of aviation law. Second chapter treats air navigation services and the legal regulation of their provision according to the Convention on International Civil Aviation. The following chapter introduces the summary of main organisations involved in civil aviation focussing on ICAO, EUROCONTROL, European Union, its status, the systematics of EU law and on the European Aviation Safety Agency. The fourth chapter discusses the EU common transport policy in the field of air transport, the progressive air transport...

The Organization and Integration of the I/O CPU in the ANPT Project

Brett, Michael Edward 11 1900 (has links)
The ANPT (Air Navigation Procedures Trainer) is a navigation simulator being developed by Litton Systems (Canada) Limited. The ANPT design is based on the use of two ECLIPSE S/200 minicomputers to supply the background monitoring necessary for the system. This reports deals with the implementation of the software for the processor that will control the navigation simulation hardware of the ANPT. Two major sections of the implementation are covered: the organization phase which details the modules needed to control the hardware and to communicate with the other processor, and the integration phase in which the various modules are linked together with each other and with the hardware in order to obtain a cycling system. The problems that could be encountered during system integration will be discussed along with possible solutions to these problems. / Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

Key performance indicators for the evaluation of an air navigation service providers' safety management system

Ehliar, Lars-Johan, Wagner, Tobias January 2016 (has links)
Safety is the main concern of the aviation industry. All Air Navigation Service Providers must have a Safety Management System (SMS) which states how safety is handled, promoted and prioritized. By developing Key Performance indicators (KPIs), it is possible to quantify the effectiveness of a SMS, discover potential flaws and improvement measures. This thesis identifies principles behind the SMS, the development of KPIs and suggest potential KPIs for the Swedish air navigation service provider LFVs’ SMS. A literature study was performed and organisation specific documents were analysed to develop potential KPIs within the areas timely compliance with international obligations, competency and adoption and sharing of best practices based on an EASA questionnaire. This work presents a set of 27 performance indicators and recommends 6 as potential KPIs for the three areas together. The KPIs are developed specifically for LFV but could be applicable for other organisations with similar SMS structure and processes. They should be analysed within the organisation and, potentially, have thresholds set before implementation.
