Across the Deep South: A Linked Story Collection focuses on the establishment and reestablishment of themes that reflect the mutability of characters over time, along with the equally mutable notion of identity found within the cultural context of the modern Southern United States. The stories follow the paradigm of Sherwood Anderson’s linked story collection Winesburg, Ohio in that character and geographical location combine over the course of multiple stories to recontextualize theme and character development through intertextual cohesiveness. Preceding the collection of stories is a critical introduction that considers the linked story collection as an independent form of fiction occupying a distinct space between the non-interrelated short story collection and the novel.

Alabama Community College Presidents' Perceptions Regarding Distance Education

The purpose of this study was to examine Alabama community college presidents’ perceptions regarding distance education. Further, this study was intended to determine the adequacy of the training opportunities and support for faculty that teach distance education courses and what services are available for distance education students. This study was designed to investigate distance education in the Alabama Community College System and to provide information in an effort to create a comprehensive plan to maximize access to online learning for students within the system. A survey was given to a total of 26 Alabama 2-year college presidents (22 comprehensive community colleges and four technical colleges). The online survey consisted of 40 closed-ended multiple-choice questions and 2 open-ended questions. The survey asked questions regarding the presidents’ perceptions of distance education, online courses, student support, and virtual community colleges. The results of the statistical analysis were presented in both narrative and table forms to provide answers to the four research questions. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The study concludes with a summary, conclusion, and recommendations for further research. The findings of the study showed that Alabama community college presidents’ perceived distance education as important to the growth of their respective institutions. Alabama community colleges provided adequate training opportunities for faculty who taught distance education courses, and provided adequate services for students that enrolled in distance education courses. In addition, the findings indicated the following factors had a major or moderate influence on their institutions’ decisions regarding college-level, credit-granting distance education offerings: seeking to increase student enrollment, making more courses available, making more degree and certificate programs available, meeting student demands for flexible schedules and reducing seat time, providing access to college for students who otherwise would not have access, and maximizing the use of existing college facilities. The findings also determined that institutions provided adequate services for students enrolled in distance education courses.

Dinoflagellate paleoecology and biostratigraphy of the Middle Eocene Tallahatta and Lisbon Formations from the Baldwin County, Alabama, Core

This study documents the occurrence of dinoflagellate cysts from the Middle Eocene Tallahatta and Lisbon Formations in the Baldwin County, Alabama, Core. This is part of a larger project being conducted by the ARCO Depositional Sequence Analysis Group to gather paleontological, sedimentological, paleomagnetic, geophysical, and geochemical data from the Alabama Coastal Plain for the purpose of calibrating the Tertiary time scale with the sequence stratigraphy of the Gulf region. A total of 101 taxa were identified, including 55 genera, 91 species, and 10 subspecies. Statistical analyses were run on the data collected to identify paleoecologic patterns and to relate these patterns, if possible, to sedimentary sequences. Diversity curves generated from the data show that there is usually a rise in diversity at sequence boundaries and at introsequence surfaces. Q-mode cluster analysis and detrended correspondence analysis indicate that samples tend to cluster within sequences. R-mode cluster analysis was performed and live informal cyst associations are discussed. Comparison of this studies assemblage with ranges published by Goodman and Stover (1975, 1983), and Edwards (1982) confirm the Middle Eocene age assigned to these units. / Master of Science

Subsurface stratigraphy of the Eocene Cocoa Sand Member in Mississippi and Alabama

The Eocene Cocoa Sand Member of Yazoo Formation is fine grained, moderately to well sorted, poorly cemented, quartz arenite. Surface exposures are poor, but it has been mapped from west Choctaw County, Alabama to eastern Jasper County, Mississippi. In the subsurface, the Cocoa Sand Member is identified by obvious protrusion both in Spontaneous and Resistivity Logs. Northeast to southwest cross-sections (perpendicular to the paleo-shoreline) and northwest to southeast cross-sections (parallel to the paleo-shoreline) were developed, along with isopach maps, to determine the sequence stratigraphic setting and a depositional model of the Cocoa Sand Member. Previous work has interpreted the Cocoa Sand Member as a shelf margin sand deposited as part of a lowstand systems tract or as a transgressive sand. Grain size analysis indicates that the sand coarsens upward and there is evidence in core that the upper contact of the Cocoa sand with the Pachuta Marl is sharp, representing an upper erosion surface. The presence of rip-up clasts at the base of the Cocoa sand member supports the presence of a transgressive surface at the contact with the North Twistwood Creek. Based on the sand thickness distribution as identified in the Cocoa Sand isopach map and cross sections, two sand ridges have been recognized extending nearly parallel to the paleoshoreline across the Mississippi and Alabama. A three stage model is presented suggesting the formation of these ridges during transgression with the source of the sand being from the eroded and reworked underlying North Twistwood Creek Member. / Department of Geological Sciences

An Acute Sense of Place: The Songs of Norman Blake

American flat-picking guitarist, singer and songwriter Norman Blake holds legendary status among guitar players, bluegrass, and folk musicians. The aim of this research is to analyze the interaction of sense of place in Norman Blake’s songwriting. This research will explore the techniques Blake uses to create that acute sense of place. Elements of literary criticism, cultural geography, ethnomusicology, and sense of place studies, as well as historical background information on Northern Alabama and North Georgia will be employed to show how this particular region of Southeastern Appalachia has informed Blake’s songwriting. The research questions that I aim to answer are how a sense of place has influenced Norman Blake’s songwriting, how his writing has influenced other songwriters in the field of 20th century folk music, bluegrass, Americana, and country music, and what songwriting techniques Blake has employed to create an acute sense of place.

Organic-walled microplankton biostratigraphy and paleoecology of the Maastrichtian Prairie Bluff Chalk formation of central and western Alabama

Marine organic-walled microplankton biostratigraphy of the Maastrichian Prairie Bluff Chalk is documented. A total of 69 dinoflagellate species were identified in the Prairie Bluff Chalk. Samples were studied from three sites in central and western Alabama (Tombigbee River, Millers Ferry, and Braggs). Also included were several samples of the overlying Clayton Formation, and the underlying Ripley Formation. The species and their stratigraphic ranges were compared with other coeval sections in the U. S. and Europe. Dinoflagellate Zones Va and Vb of Wilson (1974) are recognized in the Prairie Bluff Chalk. This suggests the age of the Prairie Bluff Chalk is restricted to late Maastrichtian. The Prairie Bluff Chalk correlates to the upper Providence Formation of Georgia (Firth 1984); the lower Providence being early Maastrichtian. The basal Clayton Formation may be latest Maastrichtian in age / Master of Science
