Brist på själslig insikt? : Utomjordingar och deras forskning kring människan i Dark City / Lack of spiritual understanding? : Aliens and their research about humans in Dark CityPettersson, Björn January 2012 (has links)
The paper examines how human inner properties and the interpretation of the external worldare explained and presented in Dark City (Alex Proyas, 1998). Aspects as the relationship between the body and soul/consciousness, body snatching, memory transferences and dystopian cities are analyzed. The field of study is compared to a general science-fiction film perspective regarding the aspects. Dark City contains an alien race with a common mind, but who lacks soul and individuality. They represent what humanity can become if the scientific development goes too far. They conduct research about the human soul to save their own race. They fail to reach the soul trough scientific experiments, which include memory transferences. The only remaining explanation is that the soul has an immaterial origin. This is against the common materialistic view in the current science-fiction genre; the inner aspects are to a large extent explained from a cognitive/neural perspective. This means that Dark City implicit criticize movies and theories which states that we may be able to understand and create copies of the human consciousness.

Bohuslav Maritnů¡¦s Oboe Concerto, H. 353 is one of the most important oboe works in the twentieth century. This Concerto is composed in 1995, in Maritnů¡¦s later life period. There are numerous mistakes and controversies over the final published version. This has resulted various interpretation of the same piece by many performers throughout the decades. The main topic of this research concerns with the differences of the published editions and six recordings.
This thesis is consisted of introduction, conclusion, and other three main chapters. The introduction includes research motivation, purpose, literature review and components definition. The first chapter is the introduction of Maritnů¡¦s life and music. Also, the important features of Oboe Concerto, H. 353 are briefly described in this chapter. The second chapter detailed described and the analyzed the Oboe Concerto, H. 353. The essential materials used in this piece are analyzed and organized in table charts. Nevertheless, for giving the instructions for practicing this piece, the play-skills and teaching-materials are suggested along with the difficult parts of the whole composition. Chapter three is the most important part of this thesis. This chapter mainly focuses on the comparison between scores and sound recordings, and discusses the accuracy of these versions. The scores including the piano version and the orchestra versions and those are expounded in the section one. Furthermore, according to the literatures, the correctness of musical notes and articulation are arranged in this section. I also mark the mistakes of each movement of Oboe Concerto, H. 353 in appendix for readers¡¦ references. Section two in chapter three is the comparison of different sound recordings of this piece. The six important and accomplished oboists¡¦ recordings are discussed in order to let readers realize these great oboists¡¦ music style and their characteristics. These most influential performers are Jiři Tancibudeck, Ingo Goritzki, Heinz Holliger, Lajos Lencsés, Thomas Indermühle, and Alex Klein. The last part is the conclusion of this thesis which concluded and analyzed the whole thesis.

Exploring The Variation of Economic Performance Within Developing Democracies: an Institutional Analysis of East and South-East AsiaAnderson, Samuel John January 2008 (has links)
This thesis explores the impact of democratic institutions amongst the Asian developing countries. There has been debate about the successful economic rise of these seven countries; however, questions remain over the differing levels of economic performance. Institutional literature has paid scant attention to the role of democracy, and how this has influenced economic development throughout Asia. This thesis explores the relationships between four democratic institutions - cabinets, party-systems, electoral systems and bicameralism - and economic performance across six developing democracies, in addition to Japan. Using current democratic institutional literature derived from OECD countries, this thesis expands the scope to include new countries. The analysis employs both statistical methods and case studies to assess the relationships between four democratic institutions and seven socio-economic indicators between 1986 and 2005. The linear regressions provided evidence that coalition cabinets are correlated with lower levels of inflation and unemployment, but large multi-party legislatures are not. This thesis also found correlations between strong second legislative chambers and higher FDI, lower tariffs and higher income inequality. Although this is an exploratory thesis, I suggest that democratic institutional analysis within Asia does warrant further examination; an assessment of the specific institutions may provide us with clearer notions regarding economic development.

Protest in fiction : an approach to Alex la GumaCornwell, Gareth January 1979 (has links)
From Introduction: Thus for the black South African, the act of creative writing is inescapably a form of political action, and unless he turns his back on the reality which confronts him and retreats into a private imaginary world, it is also a form of social action, Yet Ezekiel Mphahlele has rightly cautioned that "creating an imaginary world" can never be an effective substitute for social act ion . Composing fictions about social and political problems is an indubitably oblique way of seeking a solution to them, and even the tendentious recreation of reality is only a metaphor for its actual transformation. Protest writing in South Africa is paradoxically a form of social action which is also only a parasitical imitation of social action, and therefore its avoidance . The freedom of literary creation described above is ambiguously not only a freedom to express reality, but also a freedom from the constraints of reality. And this suggests why the outlaw was such an important symbol to an earlier generation of rather more self-conscious writers.
