Parametric FE-modeling of High-speed Craft Structures

Antonatos, Alexandros January 2012 (has links)
The primary aim of the thesis was to investigate aluminum as building material for high speed craft, study the hull structure design processes of aluminum high speed craft and develop a parametric model to reduce the modeling time during nite element analysis. An additional aim of the thesis was to study the degree of validity of the idealizations and the assumptions of the semi-empirical design methods by using the parametric model. For the aluminum survey, a large amount of scientic papers and books related to the application of aluminum in shipbuilding industry were re-viewed while for the investigation of hull structure design, several designs of similar craft as well as all the classication rules for high speed craft were examined. The parametric model was developed on Abaqus nite ele-ment analysis software with the help of Python programming language. The study of the idealizations and the assumptions of the semi-empirical design methods was performed on a model derived by the parametric model with scanltings determined by the high speed craft classication rules of ABS. The review on aluminum showed that only specic alloys can be applied on marine applications. It also showed that the eect of reduced mechanical properties due to welding could be decreased by introducing new welding and manufacturing techniques. The study regarding the hull structure de-sign processes indicated that high speed craft are still designed according to semi-empirical classication rules but it also showed that there is ten- dency of transiting on direct calculation methods. The developed paramet-ric model does decrease the modeling time since it is capable of modeling numerous structural arrangements. The analysis related to the idealizations and the assumptions of the semi-empirical design methods revealed that the structural hierarchy idealization and the method of dening boundary by handbook type formulas are applicable for the particular structure while the interaction eect among the structural members is only possible to be studied by detailed modeling techniques.

The Archaeopalynology of Crystal River Site (8CI1), Citrus County, Florida

Jackson, Kendal 20 October 2016 (has links)
The Woodland-period (ca. 1000 B.C. to A.D. 1050) fisher-hunter-gatherers of the Crystal River drainage on Florida’s Big Bend Coast are well known among southeastern archaeologists for their elaborate shell mound architecture, maritime lifeway, and exotic exchange goods. Recent archaeological investigations at the Crystal River site have employed high-resolution topographic mapping, geophysical surveys, trench excavations, and coring to model the temporality of mound construction and occupation at the site; this work has set the stage for subsequent research focusing on community structure, resource extraction, and human-ecosystem dynamics. However, like many central and north peninsular Gulf Coast sites, our understanding of Crystal River lacks robust environmental context. Various geologists and archaeologists have proposed that several major sea-level oscillations transpired during the late Holocene at scales that would have heavily impacted coastal habitation; however, the paleoenvironmental reconstructions available for the Gulf Coast disagree dramatically about the timing, extent, and general pattern of sea-level history, which discourages the use of non-localized (or averaged) reconstructions for archaeological interpretation. This study investigates palynological remains recovered from midden and wetland core samples taken at Crystal River site to provide a record of vegetation response to both externally driven environmental changes (i.e. sea-level and climate flux) and anthropogenic landscape alterations throughout the first millennium A.D. Results show that stratified midden deposits and wetland soils at Crystal River site contain intact fossil pollen assemblages that span the site’s occupational history and extend into pre- and post-abandonment periods. The pollen data suggest that local communities experienced substantial environmental changes that reorganized the composition and geographic distribution of coastal ecosystems. These transformations align well with broadly recognized climatic episodes (i.e. the Roman Warm Period, Vandal Minimum, and Medieval Warm Period). In contrast, the Crystal River drainage experienced a unique pattern of sea-level flux that does not approximate oft-cited sea-level records developed elsewhere on Florida’s Gulf Coast, or the averaged sea-level curves for the Gulf Coast. Additionally, the microbotanical remains preserved within midden soils at Crystal River site may speak to the roles of particular plants as subsistence, technological, medicinal, and/or ceremonial resources.

Algorithms for Multidimensional Persistence / Algoritmer för Multidimensionell Persistens

Gäfvert, Oliver January 2016 (has links)
The theory of multidimensional persistence was introduced in a paper by G. Carlsson and A. Zomorodian as an extension to persistent homology. The central object in multidimensional persistence is the persistence module, which represents the homology of a multi filtered space. In this thesis, a novel algorithm for computing the persistence module is described in the case where the homology is computed with coefficients in a field. An algorithm for computing the feature counting invariant, introduced by Chachólski et al., is investigated. It is shown that its computation is in general NP-hard, but some special cases for which it can be computed efficiently are presented. In addition, a generalization of the barcode for persistent homology is defined and conditions for when it can be constructed uniquely are studied. Finally, a new topology is investigated, defined for fields of characteristic zero which, via the feature counting invariant, leads to a unique denoising of a tame and compact functor.

Analysis and comparison of interfacing, data generation and workload implementation in BigDataBench 4.0 and Intel HiBench 7.0

Barosen, Alexander, Dalin, Sadok January 2018 (has links)
One of the major challenges in Big Data is the accurate and meaningful assessment of system performance. Unlike other systems, minor differences in efficiency can escalate to large differences in costs and power consumption. While there are several tools on the marketplace for measuring the performance of Big Data systems, few of them have been explored in-depth. This report investigated the interfacing, data generation and workload implementations of two Big Data benchmarking suites, BigDataBench and Hibench. The purpose of the study was to establish the capabilities of each tool with regards to interfacing, data generation and workload implementation. An exploratory and qualitative approach was used to gather information and analyze each benchmarking tool. Source code, documentation, and reports published by the developers were used as information sources. The results showed that BigDataBench and HiBench were designed similarly with regards to interfacing and data flow during the execution of a workload with the exception of streaming workloads. BigDataBench provided for more realistic data generation while the data generation for HiBench was easier to control. With regards to workload design, the workloads in BigDataBench were designed to be applicable to multiple frameworks while the workloads in HiBench were focused on the Hadoop family. In conclusion, neither of benchmarking suites was superior to the other. They were both designed for different purposes and should be applied on a case-by-case basis.

Stock Market Prediction With Deep Learning

Fatah, Kiar, Nazar, Taariq January 2020 (has links)
Due to the unpredictability of the stock market, forecasting stock prices is a challenging task. In this project,we will investigate the performance of the machine learningalgorithm LSTM for stock market prediction. The algorithmwill be based only on historical numerical data and technicalindicators for IBM and FORD. Furthermore, the denoising anddimension reduction algorithm, PCA, is applied to the stockdata, to examine if the performance of forecasting the stockprice is greater than the initial model. A second method, transferlearning, is applied by training the model on the IBM datasetand then applying it on the FORD dataset, and vice versa, toevaluate if the results will improve. The results show that whenthe PCA algorithm is applied to the dataset separately, and incombination with transfer learning, the performance is greater incomparison to the initial model. Moreover, the transfer learningmodel is inconsistent as the performance is worse for FORD inrespect to the initial model, but better for IBM. Thus, concerningthe results when forecasting stock prices using related tools, it issuggested to use trial and error to identify which of the modelsthat performs the optimally. / Kandidatexjobb i elektroteknik 2020, KTH, Stockholm

Barsch, Andreas January 2003 (has links)
Landscape condition and landscape development express the functional relations between energy balance, water balance and material balance on the one hand and on the other hand they reflect the effects of land use. At present the global increase of near-surface air temperature changes the energy balance, water balance and material balance in many places. Especially in arid regions this trend and an inappropriate land use restrict the regeneration ability of vegetation and lead to the degradation of soil cover.<br /> <br /> Different scenarios for global warming prognosticate high values of increasing air temperature in Mongolia and its adjacent regions in Asia. A global estimation of anthropogenicly induced soil degradation classifies this region as strongly or extremely strong affected. Against this background a research was carried out in the Uvs Nuur Basin, placed in the northwest of Mongolia and therefore in one of the most arid regions of this country. The object of investigation was the reflection of the global increase of air temperature on a local and regional level and the resulting changes of landscape balance.<br /> <br /> From 1997 to 1999 the effects of changes in summer weather on the landscape condition were measured on a transect from the Kharkhiraa mountains at the western margin of the basin up to the lake Uvs at the centre of the basin. The transect included alpine mat, mountain steppe, dry steppe and semi desert. Climatic data was collected at 9 transect stations, in addition with characteristics of vegetation, soil and soil moisture. The data of summer 1998 was bundled and consolidated with a cluster analysis. On this basis forms of landscape condition could be evaluated in content, arranged chronologically and characterised by time performance models (stacks).<br /> <br /> The time performance models prove that forms of landscape condition marking the heat and the drought of summer 1998 can be found at every station of the transect except of the one on the summit of Khukh Uul at almost 3.000 m above sea level and another groundwater-influenced station at the bank of lake Uvs. However, extremely dry periods occur only from the centre of the basin up to the foothills, thus in the semi desert, the dry steppe and the short grass steppe. They do not occur in the mountain forest and in the alpine mat.<br /> <br /> Areas in the semi desert are most affected by drought and lack of precipitation during the summer 1998. Four fifths of the days in the measurement period are extremely droughty days. Either there is no precipitation at all or it is insufficient to fill up the soil water storage exhausted since spring-time. The relation of precipitation and potential evaporation averages out here at 1:12.<br /> <br /> A progressive desertification becomes apparent in the semi desert, particularly determined by an inappropriate land use in conjunction with an increasing goat-rearing in the area around the settlements. Partially this trend even affects the dry steppe in adjacency to the semi desert toward the margin of the basin. These areas are characterised not only by the highest stocking rate but also by the largest number of unofficial dirt roads thus leading to the denudation of the soil cover and finally to the spreading of desertification processes.<br /> <br /> From the methodical point of view it is obvious that the characterisation by time performance models facilitates the determination of weather and climate influence on landscape condition by summarising their information. However, the interpretation of the results has to be accomplished by a describing analysis of the measured data. The procedure applied in the western Uvs Nuur Basin and its adjacent mountains provides the opportunity to examine and substantiate the reports on global warming at regional or local level.
