The concepts of analyticity

Zhang, Haipeng, 張海澎 January 2013 (has links)
In this thesis I will defend analyticity. Quine has criticized analyticity. To answer Quine’s challenge, P. Boghossian distinguishes metaphysical analyticity and epistemological analyticity. He argues that epistemological analyticity exists while metaphysical analyticity does not. But, T. Williamson further rejects epistemological analyticity. In this thesis, I will defend both metaphysical analyticity and epistemological analyticity. In chapter I, I will generally define and discuss four conceptions of analyticity. I will show that there are different readings of each conception of analyticity. In chapter II, I will criticize K. Glüer, Hofmann & Horvath, and G. Russell’s arguments. They attempt to defend metaphysical analyticity. I will show that their arguments fail. To answer Quine’s challenge and to salve analyticity, Boghossian resorts to implicit definition and Glock suggests a normative view of analyticity. In chapter III, I will argue that their efforts fail. In chapter IV, I will defend metaphysical analyticity in a new perspective. The new perspective holds that metaphysical analyticity is true in virtue of concepts rather than meanings. I will argue that, analytic propositions are about the logical relations of realities. And these logical relations are the projections of our conceptual systems. So, the truth of analytic statements is completely determined by concepts they contain. And then, in chapter V, I will explain how concepts could completely determine the truth of analytic statements. Basing on some theories of concepts, I will show that the truth of analytic statements could be explained by means of the structure of concepts. In chapter VI, I will defend epistemological analyticity. T. Williamson has rejected epistemological analyticity. I will argue that Williamson’s argument fails. I will show that his definitions of analyticity are improper. / published_or_final_version / Philosophy / Doctoral / Doctor of Philosophy

'n Ondersoek na die proses van gemeente-analise.

Jansen, Hendrik Uys 09 January 2008 (has links)
The past few years the researcher spent a lot of time to reflect on the current state of the church, the desires of God for it and the growing gap inbetween. Statistical research has shown that the church, worldwide, tends to have a stagnant and declining growth. While the world’s population is rapidly growing, Christianity represents a constant figure of 34% towards the population over the last hundred years (Britannica Encyclopedia Online 2000). In America the overall attendance at Christian churches has slumped (Barna 1998:15). If the current growth tendency continues in The Netherlands, the churchless figure in 2020 can rise to 73% (Noordegraaf 1999:14). In South Africa church membership is declining in most of the denominations (Froise 1996:18, Meyer 1997:5-16, Roodt 2000:50-52). Why does this negative growth tendency exist in most churches? The researcher suggests that one of the reasons is that the typical congregation’s ministries is structured and practiced in such ways that it prevents effective ministry to people. What can be done? Through survey in this study, the researcher wants to show that the church must rediscover it’s sole purpose as God intended it. Through the process of church analysis and assessment, the congregation can determine what it’s current state is according to God’s ideal. In this way the congregation can identify his strong points, limitations and problems. If these factors are determined, the congregation can begin to plan actions to change the current ministry practices towards the ideal situation. In this process, the congregation develops as a spiritually transforming community in the world, as God had intended for the church to be. The focus of the study lies towards this process of church analysis and also attempts to contribute in a practical way. / Dr. B.J. Geyser

Types of conceptual enquiry : a case for thinking there is a type that does not depend on the notion of analyticity

Dawes, Ryan January 2011 (has links)
Many if not all Analytic Philosophers in the first seventy years or so of Analytic Philosophy thought that enquiry into concepts had a significant place in philosophy. This is not a view shared by most contemporary Analytic Philosophers. One reason for this change in attitude is Quine’s famous critique of analyticity. Enquiry into concepts had been thought to depend on a satisfactory notion of analyticity. Many thought that Quine had shown that no such notion is available. It is true that the traditional model of Conceptual Analysis operated with the notion of analyticity. The reductive project of Conceptual Analysis was supposed to issue in analytic truths that were necessarily true and knowable a priori. Furthermore the necessity of these truths, and the fact that they were knowable a priori were accounted for in terms of their analyticity. I argue that there is an alternative model of Conceptual Enquiry which does not require a notion of analyticity to do the work it does. I argue that the notion of analyticity is not central to the style of philosophising of the Ordinary Language Philosophers. Major ‘Ordinary Language Philosophers’ did not appeal to the notion of analyticity in describing or accounting for their work. Neither is such a notion required to account for their work. The upshot is that one ought not to conclude that enquiry into concepts is redundant for philosophical purposes on account of there being no satisfactory notion of analyticity.
