Use of Asphalt Pavement Analyzer to Study In-Service Hot Mix Asphalt Performance

Permanent deformation or rutting is a major hot mix asphalt (HMA) performance distress. Implementation of the Superior Performing Asphalt Pavement (Superpave) HMA mix design system was due, in part, to limit HMA rutting. Along with the Superpave system, performance testing equipment was developed to evaluate rutting potential; however, this equipment proved largely ineffective. As a result, agencies developed their own performance equipment, with the Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA) currently being used by many agencies for HMA rutting evaluation. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is utilizing the APA to evaluate HMA performance, but does not currently have established pass/fail criteria. Field rutting analysis and coring were conducted for twentyour pavements throughout Mississippi to determine in-service performance. Asphalt pavement analyzer testing was conducted on field cores and lab prepared specimens to evaluate mix characteristic influence on rutting and to develop APA failure criteria.

Enabling Validation of a CubeSat Compatible Wind Sensor

The Ram Energy Distribution Detector (REDD) is a new CubeSat-compatible space science instrument that measures neutral wind characteristics in the upper atmosphere. Neutral gas interactions with plasma in the ionosphere/thermosphere are responsible for spacecraft drag, radio frequency disturbances such as scintillation, and other geophysical phenomena. REDD is designed to collect in-situ measurements within this region of the atmosphere where in-flight data collection using spacecraft has proven particularly challenging due to both the atmospheric density and the dominating presence of highly reactive atomic oxygen (AO). NASA Marshall Space Flight Center has a unique AO Facility (AOF) capable of simulating the conditions the sensor will encounter on orbit by creating a supersonic neutral beam of AO. Collimating the beam requires an intense magnetic field that creates significant interference for sensitive electronic devices. REDD is undergoing the final stages of validation testing in the AOF. In this presentation, we describe the LabVIEW-automated system design, the measured geometry and magnitude of the field and the specially designed mount and passive shielding that are utilized to mitigate the effects of the magnetic interference. / Master of Science

Assessment of Soybean Leaf Area for Redefining Management Strategies for Leaf-Feeding Insects

Commercially available leaf area index (LAI) meters are tools that can be used in making insect management decisions. However, proper technique must be determined for LAI estimation, and accuracy must be validated for the meters. Full-season soybean require LAI values of at least 3.5 to 4.0 by early to mid-reproductive developmental stages to achieve maximum yield potential, but the relationship between double-crop soybean LAI and yield is unknown. This research (1) evaluated minimum plot size requirements for mechanically defoliated soybean experiments using the LAI-2000 Plant Canopy Analyzer, (2) compared LAI estimates among LAI-2000 detector types which respond to different wavelengths of light, (3) compared LAI-2000 estimates with directly determined LAI values for 0, 33, 66, and 100% mechanical defoliation levels, (4) used linear and non-linear models to describe the response of full-season and double-crop soybean yields to reductions in LAI through mechanical defoliation, and (5) evaluated the response of double-crop soybean yields to reductions in LAI through insect defoliation. The minimum plot size for obtaining accurate LAI estimates of defoliated canopies in soybean with 91 cm row centers is four rows by 2 m, with an additional 1 m at the ends of the two middle rows also defoliated. The wide-blue detector, which is found in newer LAI-2000 units and responds to wavelengths of light from 360 to 460 nm, gave higher LAI estimates than the narrow-blue detector, which responds to light from 400 to 490 nm. The unit with the narrow-blue detector gave estimates equal to directly determined LAI in two of three years for 0, 33, and 66% defoliation levels, while the units with the wide-blue detectors gave estimates higher than directly determined LAI in the two years that they were studied, except for a few accurate 33% defoliation estimates. Therefore, the LAI-2000 usually provides reasonable estimates of LAI. Yield decreased linearly with LAI when LAI values were below 3.5 to 4.0 by developmental stages R4 to R5 in both full-season and double-crop soybean. Usually, there was no relationship between yield and LAI at LAI values greater than 4.0. There was an average yield reduction of 820 ± 262 kg ha⁻¹ for each unit decrease in LAI below the critical 3.5 to 4.0 level; maximum yields ranged from 1909 to 3797 kg ha⁻¹. Insect defoliators did not defoliate double-crop soybean plots to LAI levels less than 4.0, and there was no yield difference between insect-defoliated and control plots. Therefore, double-crop soybean that maintains LAI values above the 3.5 to 4.0 critical level during mid-reproductive developmental stages is capable of tolerating defoliating pest / Ph. D.

Digital Simulative Test of Asphalt Mixtures Using Finite Element Method and X-Ray Tomography Images

Simulative tests, such as asphalt pavement analyzer (APA), Hamberg rut tester etc. have been widely used to evaluate the performance of asphalt mixtures. However, simulative tests to evaluate the performance of the mixtures cannot give fundamental properties of Asphalt Concrete (AC) due to the complex stress and strain fields. On the other hand, due to the availability of high-performance computing systems and software, numerical techniques are gaining popularity. This dissertation presents a computational simulation method of the APA tests in order to evaluate the rutting potential of asphalt mixtures based on actual microstructure reconstructed from X-ray tomography images. In the study, the microstructure of AC is obtained through the analysis of X-ray images, which included the digital information of the microstructure for the scanned specimen. In the simulations the three phases, mastic (asphalt binder with mineral filler), aggregates, and voids are assigned with different material properties. Aggregates are modeled as an elastic material, and air voids are removed during the loading steps. The adopted two-layer model is only used to represent the rate and temperature dependent behavior of the mastics. The parameters are obtained with inverse methods. Based on the sensitivity analysis of the parameters, an iterative procedure is performed to optimize the parameters using the experimental measurement and results of the model simulations. A parametric study is also conducted to study the effect of major parameters such as the stiffness ratio of the networks on the macro response of the model. The simulation results obtained shows a good agreement with the experimental results. The dissertation also presents a method to measure micro strains in asphalt mixture. An automated procedure using tomography images to reconstruct three-dimensional particles is developed. The translations of the particles are obtained from the coordinate differences of particles' mass centers before and after the APA testing. The micro and macro strains in the mixture are calculated based on the particle translations. A good correlation is found between measured strains and experimental result. / Ph. D.

A Framework for Validation and Testing of a CubeSat Retarding Potential Analyzer

Traditionally, Retarding Potential Analyzers (RPAs) operate exclusively on large satellites due to the size, power, and mass constraints posed by nano-satellites like CubeSats. These sensors take in-situ measurements of Earth's atmospheric ion current during a range of time-varied ``retarding" voltage steps. Curve-fitting the retarding voltage versus collected current data provides derived measurements of ion density, ram velocity, and temperature. In order to successfully miniaturize these instruments and validate their performance prior to launch, thorough calibration and comprehensive end-to-end testing must be performed. This paper discusses the difficulties of performing complete system validation in ground-based vacuum chamber testing for RPAs. A procedure for RPA instrument calibration will be presented along with the calibration results for the Lower Atmosphere/Ionosphere Coupling Experiment (LAICE) CubeSat RPA. This paper presents a user-friendly and robust software control suite developed to read, parse, and interpret the data from the LAICE RPA. Electronics noise testing and analysis defines the performance boundaries of the instrument electronics. End-to-end testing of the LAICE RPA with a hot-filament ion source simulating the space plasma verifies the function of the LAICE RPA sensor and electronics, as well as the software control, thus qualifying the instrument for on-orbit use. / Master of Science

This master´s thesis deal with designing of the system for ZigBee wireless network monitoring. In the first, treoretical part, is reader introduced to this wireless standard. Acquired informations are possible to compare with the simillar wireless standards. Next part of this document describes procedure of designing harward part of modular system - motherboard and scanning module. In this place is so discussion about component parameters, which are very needed to keep. One part of this discussion is about the problems with wrong component parameters. The last part of this master´s thesis is about software part of this project and so shows designed system in work.
