Supporting the work of global virtual teams: the role of technology-use mediation

This thesis investigates the role of technology-use mediation in supporting the work of global virtual teams. The work is set in the context of a longer term action research programme into collaborative computing and global virtual teams, initiated by Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand and Uppsala University in Sweden. Over the period since 1998, global virtual collaborations involving teams of students from both universities have been conducted annually. This thesis investigates the 2004 collaboration cycle, in which participants from St Louis University Missouri joined the collaboration. This was the first triadic collaboration, and covered Northern, Southern and Western aspects of the globe while traversing three widely divergent time-zones. In spite of the extensive experience in collaboration possessed by the coordinators at all three sites, the results of the global virtual trial were at best mixed. This repeated experience of dissatisfaction in our global virtual collaborations, in spite of the technology being in place has been a primary motivator for this work. Why is global virtual collaboration difficult? What roles and activities are critical? How can we do it better? These are not issues solely to do with the student actors in the global virtual teams, but more to do with the supporting cast, engaged in “activities which involve the shaping of other users activities of [technology] use” (Orlikowski et al., 1995, p.425). Thus came about my interest in exploring the topic of technology-use mediation. This thesis applies a research framework adapted from DeSanctis & Poole’s “Adaptive Structuration Theory” (1994) by the author. Initially applied to “facilitation” in virtual teams “Extended Adaptive Structuration Theory (EAST)” (Clear, 1999a), has undergone further development. The resulting research framework “Technology-use Mediated AST (TUMAST)” is applied here for the first time to investigate technology-use mediation activities performed during the global virtual collaborative trial. A corpus of data based on the email communications of supporting parties to the collaboration is analysed in depth in this study, applying a combination of grounded theoretic and structurational techniques. Thus a very rich and firmly grounded picture of the processes of technology-use mediation is built. This thesis represents the first known in-depth longitudinal study of technology-use mediation in a real global virtual team setting. From this exploratory study some novel theorizations have resulted. Methodologically it demonstrates analysis of technology-use mediation applying the TUMAST framework in a manner that captures the richness and evolution over time of these complex activities. Substantively it proposes a novel theory of “Collaborative Technology Fit (CTF)”. It is hoped that future global virtual team coordinators and researchers may apply the theory in order to map their situation, and diagnose their degree of collaborative alignment on multiple dimensions, thus enabling corrective actions to be taken. While the work arises in a tertiary education context, it reflects the reality of professionals at work in a global virtual team. Its application within other domains remains to be proven, but readings from the literature, and personal experience within global virtual software development teams suggest its wider applicability.

Is sharing caring? : En studie om Collaborative Economy's effekter på en hållbar turism

Denna studie syftar till att studera i vilken utsträckning Collaborative Economy kan vara en mer hållbar form av turism. Fenomenet har skapat ett personligt intresse av nyfikenhet då Collaborative Economy i skrivande stund är ett väl omtalat och diskuterat ämne. Samtidigt upplevs det att tidigare studier inte har identifierat fenomenets effekter på en hållbar turism. För att uppfylla studiens syfte har ett kvalitativt tillvägagångsätt tillämpats. Det empiriskt insamlade materialet har baserats på kvalitativa intervjuer av uthyrare, middagsvärdar, deltagare och användare av Airbnb och EatWith. Vidare har det empiriskt insamlade materialet fastställt fyra stycken kategorier som utgör Airbnb´s och EatWith´s erfarenheter och uppfattningar: Mer pengar i plånboken, gästfrihet, kulturkram och reslust. Studien visade att Airbnb och EatWith utgör en fördelaktig resform. Det är turister som söker sig bortom det standardiserade utbudet och skapar en interaktion med lokalbefolkningen. Det är även en turist som använder befintligt lediga resurser under sin resa samt bidrar till lokala företag på destinationen. Studien fastställer dock att Airbnb och EatWith trots en bättre resform inte aktivt arbetar för en hållbar turismutveckling. För att uppnå en hållbar turism krävs det att ekonomiska, sociala och miljömässiga perspektiv samtliga är genomtänkta och välarbetade, och det är något studien visat Airbnb och EatWith inte åstadkommit. Studien drar därför slutsatsen att Airbnb och EatWith, företag verksamma inom Collaborative Economy i turism, inte aktivt och medvetet arbetar för en hållbar turism.

We present an approach to localization in urban environments, based on environment learning and collaborative navigation using multiple homogeneous and non-homogeneous localization technologies, fused to form a multi-sensor system.

The engineering and design of complex systems often requires that multiple design tasks be executed in parallel or overlapping efforts. When the design of individual subsystems is distributed among multiple organizations, challenges arise with respect to managing design productivity and coordinating successful collaborative exchanges. Research and development engineering projects compound these challenges further due to their inherently greater uncertainty. This report examines several factors that influence design productivity in the collaborative research and development environment, including the selection of subsystem interfaces, design information management, and complexity management. A collaborative research and development project to upgrade the Hobby-Eberly Telescope is introduced to provide case examples and illustrate the proposed value of subsequent management recommendations. / text

Quantifying the multi-user account problem for collaborative filtering based recommender systems

Identification based recommender systems make no distinction between users and accounts; all the data collected during account sessions are attributed to a single user. In reality this is not necessarily true for all accounts; several different users who have distinct, and possibly very different, preferences may access the same account. Such accounts are identified as multi-user accounts. Strangely, no serious study considering the existence of multi-user accounts in recommender systems has been undertaken. This report quantifies the affect multi-user accounts have on the predictive capabilities of recommender system, focusing on two popular collaborative filtering algorithms, the kNN user-based and item-based models. The results indicate that while the item-based model is largely resistant to multi-user account corruption the quality of predictions generated by the user-based model is significantly degraded. / text

Graduate Students' Collaborative Information Seeking in a Group-based Learning Setting

Working with others within an organization can have a variety of positive effects, and the benefits of collaboration have been discussed in various disciplines. In information science, interest in collaborative information seeking, including collaborative information seeking by students in an online learning environment is expanding. This study was aimed at understanding graduate students' collaborative information seeking behaviors through the process of a group project, including factors that affected students' perceptions of collaborative work and their difficulties during the collaborative process. The research was based on Yue and He's model, which describes information users' collaborative communication and information behaviors, and Kuhlthau's model, which describes users' individual information seeking behaviors. The participants were 43 students enrolled in a master's level course delivered primarily online. The students were required to work together in groups to complete a research project. Data were collected through a background survey, behavior survey, and online communication texts and analyzed using descriptive statistics, statistical tests, and content analyses. The results showed significant changes in collaborative and information seeking behaviors and perceptions across three stages of the project during the semester. Theoretical, practical, and methodological implications for future research are discussed.

Evaluating information presentation strategies for spoken dialogue systems

A common task for spoken dialogue systems (SDS) is to help users select a suitable option (e.g., flight, hotel, restaurant) from the set of options available. When the number of options is small, they can simply be presented sequentially. However, as the number of options increases, the system must have strategies for helping users browse the space of available options. In this thesis, I compare two approaches to information presentation in SDS: (1) the summarize and refine (SR) approach (Polifroni et al., 2003; Polifroni, 2008) in which the summaries are generated by clustering the options based on attributes that lead to the smallest number of clusters, and (2) the user-model based summarize and refine (UMSR) approach (Demberg, 2005; Demberg and Moore, 2006) which employs a user model to cluster options based on attributes that are relevant to the user and uses coherence markers (e.g., connectives, discourse cues, adverbials) to highlight the trade-offs among the presented items. Prior work has shown that users prefer approaches to information presentation that take the user’s preferences into account (e.g., Komatani et al., 2003;Walker et al., 2004; Demberg and Moore, 2006). However, due to the complexity of building a working end-to-end SDS, these studies employed an ”overhearer” evaluation methodology, in which participants read or listened to pre-prepared dialogues, thus limiting evaluation criteria to users’ perceptions (e.g., informativeness, overview of options, and so on). In order to examine whether users prefer presentations based on UMSR when they were actively interacting with a dialogue system, and to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of the two approaches, I compared them in a Wizard-of-Oz experiment. I found that in terms of both task success and dialogue efficiency the UMSR approach was superior to the SR approach. In addition, I found that users also preferred presentations based on UMSR in the interactive mode. SDS are typically developed for situations in which the user’s hands and eyes are busy. I hypothesized that the benefits of pointing out relationships among options (i.e., trade-offs) in information presentation messages outweighs the costs of processing more complex sentences. To test this hypothesis, I performed two dual task experiments comparing the two approaches to information presentation in terms of their effect on cognitive load. Again, participants performed better with presentations based on the UMSR algorithm in terms of both dialogue efficiency and task success, and I found no detrimental effect on performance of the primary task. Finally, I hypothesized that one of the main reasons why UMSR is more efficient is because it uses coherence markers to highlight relations (e.g., trade-offs) between options and attributes. To test this hypothesis, I performed an eye-tracking experiment in which participants read presentations with and without these linguistic devices, and answered evaluation and comparison questions to measure differences in item recall. In addition, I used reading times to examine comprehension differences between the two information presentation strategies. I found that the linguistic devices used in UMSR indeed facilitated item recall, with no penalty in terms of comprehension cost. Thus, in this thesis I showed that an approach to information presentation that employs a user model and uses linguistic devices such as coherence markers to highlight trade-offs among the presented items improves information browsing. User studies demonstrated that this finding also applies to situations where users are performing another demanding task simultaneously.
