Not Just A "Place For Friends": Teenagers, Social Networks, and Identity Vulnerability

Pruitt, Cenate 07 January 2012 (has links)
This study is an empirical analysis of adolescents' risk management on internet social network sites such as Facebook and MySpace. Using a survey of 935 U.S. adolescents gathered by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, I investigate the influence of offline social networks on online socialization, as well as the impact of parental and self mediation tactics on risky online information-sharing practices. Overall, the relationship between offline social network strength and online communications methods was inconclusive, with results suggesting that most teens use online communications in similar ways, regardless of offline connectedness. Some relationships were discovered between parental and individual mediation tactics and risky online information sharing, largely supporting the use of active mediation techniques by parents and informed control of shared information by individual users. User demographics had a strong effect on risky information sharing, with gender and age playing a significant role. This study also offers some suggestions for parents and policy-makers interested in the topic.

Så kommer vi alltid in på internet : En intervjustudie av samhällskunskapslärares användande av internet teoretiskt i undervisningen / Everything concerns internet : An interview study of social studies teacher’s use of Internet theoretically in tuition

Dahlström, Täpp Ida January 2013 (has links)

Privacy in the Age of the Internet

Russell, Bronwen Elizabeth 15 April 2009 (has links)
This paper addresses the claim that there is zero privacy for Canadians on the internet. For the interpersonal computing era 1992 to 2007, the relationship between the three major agents (i.e., individual users, federal government, and business) operating on the internet was examined. Three questions guided the research: how has the popular press educated Canadians about internet privacy? what has been the response of the federal government? how have online companies protected the privacy of Canadians? Content analyses of (a) Macleans magazine, (b) the Privacy Commissioner's Annual Reports to Parliament, (c) and the privacy policies of the most visited websites were conducted. Complex Adaptive Systems theory indicated that privacy is an emergent property arising from the interaction of the agents and that the internet is an environment where the agents' interactions lead to limited privacy.

A Study of Internet Addiction and Self-Concept on Elementary School Students

Chen, Wen-Ju 15 June 2006 (has links)
A Study of Internet Addiction and Self-Concept on Elementary School Students Abstract The purposes of this study are to understand the present situation of elementary school students' Internet behavior, Internet addiction and self-concept, and to analyze the correlations among these three above-mentioned variables. The study is carried out through literature reviews, case surveys and interviews. The subjects are the 5th and 6th grade students at elementary schools in Kaohsiung City. By cluster sampling, the researcher sends out 1112 copies of questionnaire, and receives 1052 valid copies. The collected data are analyzed in the form of descriptive statistics, t-test, one¡Vway ANOVA, and Pearson's product-moment correlation. The top 5% of the Internet addition scores of the samples are interviewed in groups. The major findings of this study are as follows: 1. Family is the major factor that affects elementary school students' Internet behavior and Internet addiction. 2. Virtual interactive Internet activity may easily lead to Internet addiction. 3. In different aspects, elementary school students' self-conception varies in results. 4. Students who spend most of time surfing or e-mailing have better self-concept performance than the others. 5. The more obvious the tendency toward Internet addiction is, the higher mental ego the self-concept shows. 6. The more obvious the tendency toward Internet addiction is, the lower ability-ego and physical ego the self-concept shows. According to these results, some suggestions are presented to educational institutions, educators, counselors and parents. It is expected that understanding the relations between Internet addiction and self-concept of elementary school students, can facilitate to shape appropriate attitude toward Internet, to develop students' self-concept, and to improve students' adaptation to their lives. Keyword: Internet behavior, Internet addiction, self-concept

The Service Quality Research of National Banks' Website in Taiwan

Cheng, Hao-Wen 10 January 2001 (has links)
ABSTRACT Traditional banks provide intermediary financial service by connecting with people under using operative efficiency and creating appropriate credit. However, in recent years, the financial industry in Taiwan suffered from more and more competitiveness, which resulted from unrestricting and internationalization and building financial center in Asia by Taiwan government, so the banks gain less and less profits. At the same time, because of the development of information technology and use of internet, every bank starts to setup its own homepage to provide internet service and gain the advantages of unlimited time, area, fewer cost and more customers from internet bank. The service quality is an important weapon for banks to compete. Although the form of Internet service is different from the traditional service, service quality is still the core competitiveness of the Internet bank. This study mainly investigated national banking website to realize their service functions. The basic structure accorded to the dimensions of SERVQUAL scale in service quality and integrated several traditional measuring factors of banking and modern references of Internet service quality. It also analyzed the relationships among service quality, user satisfaction and user loyalty that can strengthen the concept that increase service quality that also arouse competitiveness of banks. This study though practical research developed five dimensions of the scale, which included good image and assurance, reliability and convenience, price, empathy and customization, and the design of servicing system. After study process we can find: the reliability and convenience have the most affection in whole service quality and satisfaction. Otherwise, we can prove that good service quality will induce customers to raise their satisfaction and increase their loyalty. We can predict that service quality of Internet will be the usable weapon for bank to maintain customer loyalty after allowing setup the virtual Internet bank.

Abstract Internet is one of the most important inventions of the twentieth century. Not solely a new media, internet also deeply involved multiple aspects of human life. New ways of providing information, crime, communication patterns, and even trade are just some of the examples how internet alters our lives. As a good case in point, the appearance of internet digital music had revolutionized the way we contact with music. It had threaten the tradition music market, and make up a new issue of copyright violation debates. In April, 2000, National Cheng-Kung University happened a MP3 event that is a typical argument about internet and copyright violation. There are two opposite opinions noted, one attitude recognized the event as already violating the copyright, whereas the other point of view was that it is still in the scope of reasonable application. The issue of violating music copyright by the internet has become an unavoidable international problem, and will become more and more common in the future. Therefore, it is very important to understand what kind of new copyright subjects had evolved in the internet music, and how to adequately apply the obligations of copyright to protect the benefits of both the author and the audience. This study includes six chapters. The major issue will focus on internet digital music, its copyright, the exceptions, and the violation conditions. The first chapter introduces the background information and general concept about internet and copyright. The second chapter discusses the topic of internet digital music, its specificity, and how the internet has changed the pattern of music transportation. Then, the third chapter scopes the recognition of copyright reproduction and transportation defined by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the United States of America, and how this definition has influenced the internet music and its utilization. The forth chapter further discusses the exception of internet music copyright protection. What is reasonable fair use and compulsory license is explored. The copyright rules in Taiwan is greatly affected by USA and international treaties, thus Berne Convention, Rome Convention, Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), and the law in USA are inspected and reviewed. The fifth chapter concentrates on the copyright and its violation in different cases of the internet music application programs, web stations, and hardware. Detail investigation and debate of the MP3 event in National Cheng-Kung University is also included. The last chapter summarizes the above discussion of internet copyright and provides suggestions for modifying the related laws in Taiwan.

Internet Addiction Disorder of Adolescents¡GA System Dynamics Approach

Tu, Jui-lin 29 July 2008 (has links)
The fast rise of Internet broadens students¡¦ ways of learning and their views; however, there is possibility that improper Internet use will result in problems of Internet addiction. Reviewing the literature about Internet addiction, we can find that many studies were carried quantitatively by using a questionnaire survey to examine and explain the relationships among related variables and their intensity and then apply regression analysis and characteristic equation to find out the forecast of Internet addiction. These studies truly not only helped the academia understand the factors involved in Internet addiction but also offered reference materials for preventing and improving the problems. Nevertheless, there were some limits in these quantitative studies. For example, it is hard to understand the causal relationship among the factors. Also, one-way linear inference ignored the feedback behaviors from Internet addiction toward related factors and fell into one-way think mode. Internet addiction is indeed a mental problem and involves complicated and obscure factors, which usually could be cause and effect of each other. This study aimed to compensate for the loss of dynamic complexity in all kinds of Internet addiction modes in the literature by reviewing important literature, inducing and generalizing dangerous factors and effects, employing system dynamics to construct the dynamic mode of Internet addiction, and applying the picture of causal feedback and the mode of math to see through the structure of movement behind and the interaction among the factors. This study showed five main findings. First, hiding oneself in the Internet world, which could not reduce pressure, only helped obtain a temporary sense of achievement but resulted in severe outcomes, such as the problem of time management and a vicious circle of interpersonal relationship and schoolwork pressure produced by Internet addiction. Second, ¡§withdrawal symptoms¡¨ and ¡§a sense of achievement obtained on the Internet¡¨ were leading indicators for Internet addiction. Third, limiting the amount of time of surfing on the Internet and slackening withdrawal symptoms were temporary solutions to the problem at a later period. Moreover, there was a certain correlation among the critical points of value of withdrawal symptoms, limiting the amount of time of surfing on the Internet, and improving the timing. Fourth, only facing the problem was the ultimate solution to Internet addiction. Finally, the problem of Internet addiction was actually a transformed version of archetype brought up in the book ¡§The Fifth Discipline.¡¨
