Os resultados do segundo experimento permitem concluir que a melhor estratégia de produção para o policultivo é produzir os peixes em gaiolas e os camarões soltos, pois as duas espécies apresentam melhor desempenho nesta situação / This study aims at evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of polyculturing the ornamental fish Freshwater Angelfish Pterophyllum scalare and Pacific White shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei in a semi-intensive system in earthen ponds. Chapter I and II presents a general overview of aquarium keeping and ornamental aquaculture and the state of aquaculture at Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil, justifying the potential of the proposed system. Two experiments were performed in the Laboratory of Aquaculture of the Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido - UFERSA. The first trial (Chapter III) compared both species produced in mono and polyculture and the second (Chapter IV) compared the polyculture with fish produced caged and uncaged. Both experiments were performed in 15 m2 ponds. First trial results show that Angelfish was negatively affected by the presence of L. vannamei, but the inverse was not true, so the polyculture can be adopted by the shrimp producer without prejudice. The second trial shows the best strategy is to produce both species polycultured with caged fish, as both species are benefited with that

Implementing a healthy eating strategy after heart and lung transplantation : a randomised controlled feasibility study

Entwistle, Timothy January 2017 (has links)
Background: Studies evaluating the possible health-promoting effects of sound nutrition in heart and lung transplant recipients are currently lacking. Despite advances in drug treatment and patient monitoring, lifestyle-associated complications such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease occur frequently. Following transplantation, a low-fat eating pattern is currently viewed as best standard care. However, a Mediterranean diet based on a varied range of fresh unprocessed foods and supplemented with extra virgin olive oil has demonstrated clinical benefit in various non-transplant populations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a Mediterranean vs a low-fat diet intervention in heart and lung transplant recipients, and to assess clinical and biochemical outcomes. Methods: This was a randomised controlled feasibility trial to evaluate a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil, vs a modified low-fat diet in heart and lung transplant recipients at a single centre. In total, 41 clinically stable male and female (median age 55 years) transplant recipients were randomly assigned (1:1) in two separate 12-month waves (n=24 and n=17) to one of these diet interventions. A range of validated food frequency and adherence questionnaires captured changes in participants' reported eating habits to 6 weeks post-study. Clinical and biochemical analysis was conducted at baseline, 25 and 52 weeks. Telephone and outpatient contact provided a support mechanism to reinforce dietary behavioural change. Caloric intake and physical exercise awareness were discussed, but not promoted. Results: Thirty nine participants completed the trial (95%). Adherence to both interventions improved significantly at week 25, and was maintained at 52 and 58 weeks. Compared with baseline, waist circumference decreased in both groups at week 25 (p=0.024). A decrease in blood pressure and heart rate occurred at 52 weeks in the low-fat group only. At 52 weeks, higher adherence resulted in significant improvements in fasting glucose in the Mediterranean (< 4.8%) and low-fat (< 5%) groups. This respective pattern was also observed with total cholesterol (≤ 9% and ≤ 7%), triglycerides (≤ 9% and ≤ 20%) and IGF-1 (≤ 9% and ≤ 15%). A significant decrease in the LDL/HDL ratio (≤ 12%) occurred in the Mediterranean group only. Moreover, clinically relevant lipid and glucose regulation changes were observed in each intervention. Conclusions: The implementation of a prospective 12-month Mediterranean or low-fat diet is feasible and acceptable in a heart and lung transplant outpatient setting. Both interventions were positively associated with improvements in lipid and blood glucose regulation and circulating IGF-1. As part of a multidisciplinary framework, these findings offer an additional therapeutic strategy to optimise outpatient care.

Knowledge, attitudes and practices among parents towards human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) testing and treatment for children: the case of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Matinhure, Nelia 11 December 2013 (has links)
Despite the availability of services, parents on antiretroviral treatment do not routinely get their children HIV tested and treated. The study aimed to document knowledge, attitudes and practices of parents towards HIV testing and treatment among children aged 0-14 years. A quantitative cross-sectional analytic study design was applied and a structured questionnaire used to collect data from 192 respondents. Findings show that 71.4% of respondents had correct knowledge of HIV transmission in children. Negative attitudes towards HIV testing of children were expressed by 42.2% of respondents while practices were reported by 16.7%. Practices were associated with self-efficacy, stigma, number of children and marital status. Knowledge and attitudes did not affect parental practices of HIV testing of children. Parents with low self-efficacy felt stigmatised, had negative attitudes, poor perception of availability of services and were unlikely to get children HIV tested. Recommendations to increase HIV testing among children included provision of skills and support to parents for HIV disclosure; localized care models to reduce stigma and identify children in need; and improving quality of services. / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)

A Feasibility Study of Tai Chi Easy for Spousally Bereaved Older Adults

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: Spousal bereavement is one of the most stressful life events, resulting in increased morbidities and mortality risk. Negative health outcomes include depressive episodes, anxiety, sleep disruption, and overall poorer physical health. The older adult population is rapidly increasing and over 30% of the US population 65 years and older are widowed. Current studies regarding older adults and spousal bereavement treatment have been limited to psychological and educational interventions. Meditative movement practices (e.g. Tai Chi) have shown benefits such as mood elevation, anxiety reduction, and other physical function improvements. A feasibility study applying an 8-week Tai Chi Easy intervention was examined to address the sequelae of spousal bereavement among adults 65 and older. Grounded in geriatric nursing as a discipline that addresses the unique needs of older adults' psychological and physiological health needs and related theoretical constructs, this project also draws from exercise science, mental health, and social psychology. Theoretical premises include Orem's Self Care Deficit Theory (nursing), Stroebe and Schut's Dual Process Model (thanatology), and Peter Salmon's Unifying Theory (exercise). Aims of the study examined feasibility as well as pre-post-intervention changes in grief, and the degree of loss orientation relative to restoration orientation (Inventory of Daily Widowed Life). A trend in the direction of improvement was found in measured subscales, as well as a statistically significant change within the loss orientation subscale. Based upon these encouraging findings, effect sizes may be used to power a future larger study of similar nature. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Nursing and Healthcare Innovation 2012
