Exploring Perceptions of New Media Among the Lakota Nation

Since its inception, the worldwide web has fundamentally altered our understanding of communications. With the rapid adoption of new media around the globe, individuals are increasingly able to communicate with people on the other side of the planet in real-time--traditional boundaries like time and space are no longer relevant barriers to intercultural communication. As such, scholars are scrambling to recognize and understand the broader implications of social media, videoconferencing, blogging, etc on more traditional definitions of culture. Additionally, researchers are beginning to study the ways in which minority cultures are utilizing new media, and the way that new media impacts their own cultural perceptions. However, there are still many gaps in the literature, and more work needs to be done to put forth minority perspectives on new media, especially from the point of view of indigenous groups in the United States. Through in-depth, qualitative interviews conducted with members of the Lakota Nation, this research explores the ways in which the Lakota experience social media, and how that media influences cultural perceptions. Findings indicate that social media (and media in general) have been positive in a myriad of ways, including but not limited to: strengthening minority perspectives, allowing for preservation of culture, and creating a place of belonging despite migration and other factors, like Covid-19, which interfered with traditional Lakota modes of communication.

Flagship Species, Tourism, and Support for Rubondo Island National Park, Tanzania

Two major goals of managers of Rubondo Island National Park (Rubondo), Tanzania are to increase the number of international visitors to the Park (and thereby increase revenue generated) and to increase support for the Park among residents of nearby communities. I investigated species preferences among children living around Rubondo and the wildlife viewing preferences of international visitors to Tanzania in an attempt to identify flagship species that Park management could use in marketing and outreach campaigns designed to meet their goals. I also assessed local interest in visiting the Park. As local flagships for Rubondo, the Egyptian goose (Alopochen aegyptiacus) and silver cyprinid (Rastrineobola argentea) appear to have the most potential among the species that I assessed (i.e., fish eagle [Haliaeetus vocifer], Egyptian goose, silver cyprinid, little egret [Egretta garzetta], sitatunga [Tragelaphus speki], genet [Genetta tigrina], monitor lizard [Varanus niloticus], spotted-necked otter [Lutra maculicollis], vervet monkey [Cercopithecus pygerythrus], crocodile [Crocodylus niloticus], hippopotamus [Hippopotamus amphibius], giraffe [Giraffa camelopardalis], and elephant [Loxodanta africana]). However, based on either range or limited aesthetic/behavioral appeal, I considered neither species useful as an international flagship. Among species on Rubondo included in investigations of potential international flagships for the Island (including the chimpanzee [Pan troglodytes], crocodile, elephant, giraffe, hippopotamus, vervet monkey, bushbuck, fish eagle, large-spotted genet, goliath heron [Ardea goliath], monitor lizard, sitatunga, and spotted-necked otter), few were concluded to have potential, either because participating visitors had limited "awareness" of and "interest" in viewing the species, local people had strong negative opinions of the species, the animals are not native to the Island, and/or the animals are more easily viewed in more readily-accessible locations. Local people generally had not visited Rubondo but wanted to visit. Not having visited the Park appeared to influence perceptions of the Park, wildlife tourism, and conservation among some participants. Recommendations for local and international marketing and outreach strategies for Rubondo are made based on the outcomes of the aforementioned investigations of local and international species preferences and interest in visiting the Park.

Successes and Pitfalls in Running a Small Program MMI

Purpose: Academic programs are faced with the important task of selecting health professional students who not only possess necessary cognitive abilities to perform their future job, but also have valuable personal/professional characteristics to draw upon in the provision of quality patient care. There is therefore "widespread agreement that it is desirable to broaden the scope of assessment beyond academic achievement" (Eva, Reiter, Trinh, Wasi, Rosenfeld, Norman, 2009, p.768) in candidate selection. The Child Life Studies Program at McMaster University used a 4-station multiple mini-interview (MMI) as part of the admission selection process. This study sought to determine the feasibility, degree of acceptability and reliability of this 4-station MMI design, and if there were any predictors of candidate's performance on the MMI. Methods: A group of 35 applicants in 2014, and 40 applicants in 2015 screened through admission procedures participated in a 4-station MMI. Each station was 15 minutes in length with 5 minutes for scoring each candidate. Anonymous stakeholder surveys were used in 2015 to assess participant and interviewer's perceptions and acceptability of the MMI in applicant selection. Generalizability coefficients were calculated to determine reliability. In addition, candidate's experience in healthcare, professional work experience, experience with children with disabilities, and previous child life course work (or lack thereof) were analyzed through independent t-tests to report any relationship with candidate's performance on the MMI. A one-way ANOVA was also completed to report any relationship between candidate's undergraduate degree type and his/her MMI performance. Results: The 4-station MMI was found to be feasible for a small program with a marked increase found in the number of candidates interviewed in a shorter period of time. It was also found to be highly acceptable among candidates and faculty. However, this studies' findings did not show statistically significant differences in MMI performance based on identified predictors, or undergraduate degree type. The reliability of the 4-station design in 2014 was G=0.718, however, was only G=0.089 in 2015, far lower than expected based on the prior year’s G Coefficient. The potential pitfalls in running a small program MMI are discussed with specific suggestions and modifications provided to enhance reliability of candidate selections across professions. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)
