Can the Author of ’Can the Subaltern Speak’ Act? : Spivaks essä i relation till ’French theory’ i USAAmborg, Jens January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to analyze some aspects of the historical surroundings in which Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak wrote her famous essay ”Can the Subaltern Speak?”. From a historical perspective, inspired by Quentin Skinner, I examine how Spivak in a context of French theory in U.S. academy criticized Michel Foucault and defended Jacques Derrida. In the first part of my analysis I relate Spivak’s essay to the ”Foucault and Derrida debate” of the sixties and seventies. I argue that many aspects of Derrida’s early critique of Foucault, and many of the themes of that debate in general, was rhetorically repeated by Spivak in ”Can the Subaltern Speak?”. In the second part of my analysis, I discuss how Foucault and Derrida in the context of U.S. academy were, rather than empirical persons, turned into common nouns well incorporated into the academic language. In this context, where Spivak appeared, I analyze how the ”notions” Foucault and Derrida was disputed. I argue that Spivak, during several years before she wrote ”Can the Subaltern Speak?”, had been trying to refute anglophone marxist and postcolonial intellectuals who criticized Derrida. These critics, including Terry Eagleton, Perry Anderson and Edward Said, had been blaming Derrida for being unhistorical, politically evasive and merely textualistic. My argument is that Spivak sought to defend Derrida towards these critics in ”Can the Subaltern Speak?”. In this context, her aim was to emphasize the efficiency of Derrida’s deconstruction as a political tool for marxist, feminist and Third world intellectuals.

Basic concepts of random matrix theoryVan Zyl, Alexis J. 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc (Physics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / It was Wigner that in the 1950’s first introduced the idea of modelling physical reality
with an ensemble of random matrices while studying the energy levels of heavy atomic
nuclei. Since then, the field of Random Matrix Theory has grown tremendously, with
applications ranging from fluctuations on the economic markets to M-theory. It is the
purpose of this thesis to discuss the basic concepts of Random Matrix Theory, using the
ensembles of random matrices originally introduced by Wigner, the Gaussian ensembles,
as a starting point. As Random Matrix Theory is classically concerned with the statistical
properties of levels sequences, we start with a brief introduction to the statistical analysis
of a level sequence before getting to the introduction of the Gaussian ensembles. With the
ensembles defined, we move on to the statistical properties that they predict. In the light
of these predictions, a few of the classical applications of Random Matrix Theory are
discussed, and as an example of some of the important concepts, the Anderson model of
localization is investigated in some detail.

Selling feminism : a study of contemporary feminist literatures, communities, and marketsHurt, Erin Allison 08 October 2010 (has links)
This dissertation explores how recent feminist authors uses their literature to create,
sustain, and expand the feminist movement through their creation of communities and
readerships. This project consists of four case studies, each of which examines how a
feminist author represents feminist identity, where she locates herself in relation to the
mainstream marketplace, which strategies she uses to circulate her representation, and
what forms of small and large feminist communities she is able to create. To develop this
analysis of feminist literary public culture, I focus on playwright Eve Ensler and her work
with the V-Day movement, novelist Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez and her expansion of the
chick lit genre, poet Lorna Dee Cervantes and her online small press, and the members of
spoken word group Sister Spit and their traveling road show. These individual case
studies, taken as a whole, speak to the ways that feminist authors are engaging
mainstream and feminist readers in ways that create and energize feminist communities. / text

Disordered Plamonics and Complex MetamaterialsGongora, J. S. Totero 05 1900 (has links)
Complex systems are ensembles of interconnected elements where mutual interaction and an optimized amount of disorder produce advanced functionalities. These systems are abundant in our daily experience: typical examples are the brain, biological ecosystems, society, and finance. In the last century, researchers have investigated the fundamental properties of disordered systems, unveiling fascinating and counterintuitive dynamics. The main aim of this Dissertation is the study of a new platform of disorder-enhanced photonics systems, denoted as Complex Metamaterials. Due to its ultrafast time scale nanophotonics represents an ideal framework to investigate and harness complex dynamics. Starting from the theoretical modeling of disordered plasmonic systems, I discuss advanced real-life applications, including the generation of highly-resistant structural colors from porous metal surfaces and the realization of early-stage cancer detectors based on surface roughness and self-similarity. In addition to the effects of structural disorder on plasmonic systems I also investigate the complex emission dynamics from non-conventional nanolasers. Lasers represent the quintessential example of a complex photonic system due to the simultaneous presence of strong nonlinearities and multi-mode interactions. At the same time, the integration of nanolasers with silicon-based electronic circuitry represents one of the greatest technological challenges in the field of nanophotonics. By combining ab-initio simulations and analytical modeling, I characterize the nonlinear emission from three-dimensional plasmonic nanolasers known as SPASERs. My results show for the first time the occurrence of a spontaneous rotational emission in spherical SPASERs, which originates from the nonlinear interaction of several lasing modes. I further discuss how rotating nanolasers can be employed as a fundamental building block for integrated quantum simulators, random information sources, and brain-inspired photonics platforms. Leveraging the practical limitations of SPASERs, I also propose a novel concept of near-field nanolaser based on invisible anapole modes. Anapoles constitute a peculiar state of electromagnetic radiation with no far-field emission and they have been recently discovered in dielectric nanoparticles. By integrating anapole lasers in a silicon-compatible platform, I discuss several advanced applications such as spontaneously polarized nanolasers and ultrafast pulse generators on-chip.

The Professional Contributions of Ruth I. Anderson to Business EducationMatthews, Barbara G. (Barbara Gayle) 05 1900 (has links)
This study explored the professional contributions of Ruth I. Anderson, retired professor of Business Administration, The University of North Texas, Denton, Texas.
The data for this study were gained through questionnaire responses, a telephone interview, and personal interviews with faculty, staff, students, and business people who have worked closely with Anderson and an interview with Anderson herself. During a literature review, many of the journal articles written by Anderson were read in order to obtain insight into the thoughts and ideas Anderson had toward business education.
The dissertation, divided into six chapters, begins with an introduction to the study. Chapter 1 includes the statement of the problem, purposes of the study, research questions, significance of the study, rationale for the study, and design of the study. Chapter 2 contains a biographical sketch of Ruth Anderson and offers a chronology of her career in business education. Anderson's educational philosophy is the focus of Chapter 3. Chapter 4 addresses her major accomplishments and contributions to business education. Anderson's impact on business education is the topic of Chapter 5. A summary is provided in Chapter 6.
This study recognized Ruth Anderson as a significant person in the field of business education. Anderson, who was employed in the field for more than forty years, is the author, or co-author, of six books and the contributor of more than eighty articles published in professional journals.
Major educational contributions of Ruth Anderson included publications, research, and involvement in professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels. Anderson made an impact on the field of business education through being a role model for former students, being a well-respected colleague, and being well known in the business education profession.
Perhaps her greatest gift to the profession was her superior classroom teaching ability. Ruth Anderson's greatest contribution continues today through the work of her former students who have gone on to be business education teachers and professional educators.

Long range order in strongly correlated systems. / 强关联系统中的长程序 / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / Long range order in strongly correlated systems. / Qiang guan lian xi tong zhong de chang cheng xuJanuary 2005 (has links)
Long range order (LRO) is one of the most important properties of physics systems, especially for a strongly correlated system. In this thesis, the long range order in a few strongly correlated systems is investigated both rigorously and numerically. / Magnetic orders in the two-dimensional periodic Anderson model (PAM) were investigated in the project. Several numerical methods including exact diagonalization, mean field methods and the constrained path Monte Carlo (CPMC) method were used here. We studied the effect of the dispersion of the impurity band on the magnetism and gave estimated phase diagrams on the band filling and impurity chemical potential plane, by comparing the ground state energies and by studying the Fourier transformation of the spin-spin correlations. / The Neel long range order in various quantum spin models was studied. A spatially anisotropy antiferromagnetic Heisenberg system was studied and a critical point Jup⊥S was obtained. When J⊥ is larger than Jup⊥S , the Neel long range order was proved to exist in the ground state of the system. Then an onsite single-ion anisotropy D-term was imposed on the above system and its effect on the existence of the long range order was studied. We obtained a critical line on the DJ⊥ plane such that above which the long range order exists. To get insight into the long range order in the two-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg model, the XXZ model and the Heisenberg system with next nearest neighbors interaction were studied. For the XXZ model, two critical couplings DeltaXY and DeltaIsing were obtained such that when 0 ≤ Delta ≤XY or Delta ≥ DeltaIsing, the Neel order appears. For the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with next nearest neighbors interaction both spin S = 1/2 and S = 1 were studied. For S = 1/2, a critical next nearest neighbors ferro-coupling Jc2 was obtained such that when J2 ≤ Jc2 , the Neel long range order appears, while for S = 1 an improved Jc2 was obtained such that when J2 ≤ Jc2 the Neel order still exists even with frustration. / Wang Yongqiang = 强关联系统中的长程序 / 王永强. / "June 2005." / Adviser: Haiqing Lin. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 67-07, Section: B, page: 3861. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2005. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 156-162). / Electronic reproduction. An Examination of Factors that Affect the Utilization of Mental Health Services by AdolescentsMurray, Nichole A. 26 January 2018 (has links)
Mental disorders among adolescents are on the rise and are among the most common chronic conditions, constituting a national epidemic. Prevalence rates indicate that 20–40% of the adolescent population in the U.S. suffers from emotional or behavioral difficulties significant enough to lead to functional impairment. Further, estimates suggest that more than 20% of the adolescent population has a diagnosable mental disorder, which significantly impacts their functioning substantially at school, at home and in their communities. Despite national agendas to address the mental health needs of adolescents, studies suggest that approximately 50 percent of adolescents with mental health needs do not seek mental health services. Framed within the Andersen Behavioral Health Model, the objective of this research was to identify and describe the factors that contribute to the under-utilization of mental health services among adolescents.
A qualitative meta-synthesis of the literature was conducted to identify the contributing factors. The goal of a meta-synthesis is to provide a greater depth of knowledge and a more extensive understanding of both the theory and the phenomena being studied. A meta-synthesis of 12 qualitative studies was conducted. Focusing on qualitative studies provides a deeper understanding of the contextual issues involved in the utilization of mental health services for adolescents.
Findings from this study suggest that need and enabling factors are important drivers of mental health service use and adolescents’ and parents’ perceptions of services, providers, and sigma are particularly important to determining use of services. The study also identified that opinions of families and peers can influence whether or not an adolescent will remain in treatment. It is critical to increase understanding of the role social networks as many adolescents suggest their network may provide some form of informal support.
It may be beneficial to focus specifically on the provision of peer-delivered support services for adolescents as well as develop and implement strategies aimed at improving perceptions around mental health. Adolescence is a critical point in time when social and emotional development are encouraged; if mental health needs are not addressed during this developmental stage, many adolescents will potentially experience more severe disorders in adulthood.
