Psychological Ballet: An analysis of selected choreography by Antony Tudor

The term "Psychological ballet" has been used in reference to Antony Tudor's ballets dating from John Martin's January 16, 1940, review of "Lilac Garden" in The New York Times. Until this thesis, the psychological ballet as a genre has been overlooked and left undefined. The Psychological Ballet can be defined by: (1) using Antony Tudor's "Pillar of Fire" as a model example and (2) analyzing the term "psychological ballet" into its two components "Psychological," and "Ballet," respectively. The contribution of drama, with attention to character, is explored. Those dance works which do not fall under the category of Psychological Ballet but are works whose themes "have mental origin or are affected by mental conflicts and/or states" will be defined as Psychogenic Works.

Antony Flew é considerado por muitos como um dos grandes filósofos do século XX. Escreveu sobre os mais diversos assuntos dentro da filosofia, principalmente nas áreas da lógica, linguagem, política e religião. Publicou em 1950 o seu primeiro e mais famoso artigo, Theology and Falsification, publicação filosófica mais reimpressa do século passado e citação constante em textos filosóficos ateístas. Aos 81 anos, em uma entrevista realizada em 2004 para a Associated Press, Flew afirmou ter mudado seu entendimento em relação à existência de Deus e que sim, é possível existir uma mente inteligente criadora do universo conhecido. Mas não seria um Deus interventor como as religiões reveladas afirmavam, Flew declarou acreditar no chamado “deus de Aristóteles”. Dividida em três partes, a dissertação trata primeiramente das principais teses filosóficas de Flew em que ele claramente muda de opinião, principalmente na interpretação da filosofia de David Hume e nas críticas à teologia natural. Na segunda parte analisa as teses que ele não muda de opinião, como o problema do mal e na questão da imortalidade humana. Na terceira parte aborda as principais questões não respondidas por Flew, em relação a sua mudança. Por ter poucos escritos na fase deísta, várias perguntas sobre possíveis contradições na sua vida filosófica surgiram e, a grande maioria ele não pôde responder, pois faleceu seis anos após a declaração de sua mudança para o deísmo, em abril de 2010. _______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This dissertation deals with a detailed analysis of Antony Flew’s philosophy of religion, from the atheist theses up to his deist “conversion”, as he calls this change. Antony Flew is considered by many as one of the great philosophers of the twentieth century. He wrote about various subjects within philosophy, especially in the areas of logic, language, politics and religion. In 1950, published his first and most famous paper, Theology and Falsification, the most reprinted philosophical publication of the last century and frequent quotation in atheistic philosophical texts. At 81, during an interview in 2004 for the Associated Press, Flew said to have changed his understanding about the existence of God and that yes, it is possible there to be an intelligent creator mind of the known universe. But, it would not be an intervenient God, as the revealed religions claimed, Flew declared to believe in the "Aristotle’s god". Divided into three parts, this dissertation deals primarily with the main philosophical theses about which Flew clearly changed his opinion, especially in the interpretation of the David Hume’s philosophy and the criticisms of natural theology. The second part analyzes the theses about which he did not change his opinion, as the problem of evil and the question of human immortality, and the third, discusses the major unanswered questions by Flew, in relation to this change. Due to having few writings in the deist phase, several questions about possible contradictions in his philosophical life emerged, the great majority could not be answered by him, because he died six years after the declaration of his move to deism, in April 2010.

ÅTTA NYANSER AV ROSA? : Riksdagspartiernas anpassning efter Feministiskt initiativ efter Europaparlamentsvalet 2014.

Uppsatsen har som syfte att undersöka förändringen i användningen av begrepp kopplade till partiet Feministiskt initiativ mellan riksdagsvalet år 2010 och år 2014 hos de sittande riksdagspartierna. Utifrån detta syftar uppsatsen även till att undersöka huruvida det går att utläsa mönster i den eventuella förändringen med utgångspunkt i deras placering i det politiska spektrumet. Studiens primärkällor är valmanifest, valaffischer samt almedalstalen från de nuvarande sittande riksdagspartierna. Dessa källor har bearbetats utifrån en kvantitativ deskriptiv innehållsanalys (almedalstal samt valmanifest), deskriptiv kvalitativ innehållsanalys (valaffischerna) samt en kvalitativ innehållsanalys (valmanifesten). Resultaten från dessa analyser har studerats utifrån Bonnie Meguids teori kring etablerade partiers möjlighet att påverka framgången hos nischade partier, samt Anthony Down’s teori som syftar till att förklara varför partier väljer att vara flexibla gentemot åsikts-strömningar, även om åsikten tidigare inte varit en fokusfråga hos partiet. Slutsatserna visar att det finns en påverkan på alla nuvarande sittande riksdagspartier utom Moderaterna, och att det inte går att utläsa något mönster på partiernas anpassning till Feministiskt initiativ utifrån politisk färg. Majoriteten av de undersökta partierna har valt ett följsamt förhållningssätt till Feministiskt initiativ, vilket innebär att de valt att anamma de frågor som Feministiskt initiativ lyfter.

A study of Fulvia

Who was Fulvia? Was she the politically aggressive and dominating wife of Mark Antony as Cicero and Plutarch describe her? Or was she a loyal mother and wife, as Asconius and Appian suggest? These contrasting accounts in the ancient sources warrant further investigation. This thesis seeks to explore the nature of Fulvia’s role in history to the extent that the evidence permits. Fulvia is most famous for her activities during Antony’s consulship (44 BC) and his brother Lucius Antonius’ struggle against C. Octavian in the Perusine War (41-40 BC). But there is a discrepancy among the authors as to what extent she was actually involved. Cicero, Octavian and Antony, who were all key players in events, provide their own particular versions of what occurred. Later authors, such as Appian and Dio, may have been influenced by these earlier, hostile accounts of Fulvia. This is the first study in English to make use of all the available evidence, both literary and material, pertaining to Fulvia. Modern scholarship has a tendency to concentrate almost exclusively on events towards the end of Fulvia’s life, in particular the Perusine War, about which the evidence is much more abundant in later sources such as Appian and Dio. However, to do this ignores the importance of her earlier activities which, if studied more fully, can help to explain her later actions in the 40’s BC. This thesis is divided into five chapters. The first provides an introduction to the topic and a biography of Fulvia. The second is a review of the modern scholarship on Fulvia. The third focuses on the contemporary sources, both the literary evidence from Cicero, Cornelius Nepos and Martial, as well as the surviving material evidence, namely the sling bullets found at Perusia and a series of coins that may depict Fulvia in the guise of Victoria. The fourth is a discussion of those authors born after Fulvia’s death in 40 BC, of whom the most important are Plutarch, Appian, and Dio. The fifth provides a conclusion to the thesis, and returns to the questions posed above in light of the analysis of the sources provided throughout the thesis. It concludes that Fulvia played a significant role in events, particularly from Antony’s consulship onwards, and that her actions were deliberate and politically motivated. Antony Gormley: Contemporizing the Index

This thesis aims to reexamine the index as a sign that generates meaning in the sculptural oeuvre of contemporary British artist Antony Gormley. The artist has consistently proclaimed his work to be indexical but has never offered clarification of the term. Rather, he adheres to the definition developed in the late nineteenth century by the term's originator, Charles Sanders Peirce. This is problematic because it gives false meaning to the indexical sign in a contemporary context. By comparing Gormley's use of the term in his sculptural practice to Peirce's theories and those of art historian Rosalind Krauss, who was the first to significantly and convincingly relate the index to art, this study will attempt to provide a contemporized definition of the index. This thesis aims to offer a clarification in the meaning of Antony Gormley's sculpture and demonstrate the index's ability to offer resolution to what is contemporary about contemporary art.

This study has been limited to the three love tragedies because in them the ennobling power of love is a major theme, affecting both the characters and the plot structure. The plays to be studied are Romeo and Juliet, Troilus and Cressida, and Antony and Cleopatra.
