Nanocrystallization and Amorphization of Zr Base Alloys during Accumulative Roll Bondin

Hsieh, Pei-Ju 12 July 2004 (has links)
The amorphous alloys have attracted great attention due to their characteristics and future potential. This research is intended to synthesis new amorphous alloy with high glass forming ability as well as low density. The addition of lighter-weight elements such as Al, Ti, Zr, Ni and Cu are tried. The selected vitrification methods in this study are solid-state accumulated roll bonding (ARB) and arc-melting of multi-element alloys. Although the procedures of solid-state reaction are more complicated than that of casting, the influence of cooling rate on amorphization process is not important. Various Zr based binary, ternary, and pentanary alloys are synthesized by the ARB method. Besides, two pentanary alloys are also developed by arc melting method for the properties comparison with those made by ARB. The evolutions of hardness, strain accumulation, the enhanced diffusion, nanocrystalline phase size, amorphous volume fraction, elastic modulus, and relative energy states in various Zr based alloy systems during ARB are characterized and analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), in correlation with X-ray diffraction results. It appears that compatible initial foil hardness would be most beneficial to the nanocrystallization and amorphization processes during the room temperature ARB; the influence would overwhelm the atomic size effect (i.e., the anti-Hume-Rothery rule) applicable for solidification processing such as drop casting or melt spinning. Meanwhile, the estimated diffusion rates during ARB are higher by several orders of magnitude than the lattice diffusion in bulk materials and the hardness is seen to increase with increasing ARB cycles. The last stage for the nanocrystalline phase to suddenly transform into the amorphous state is examined, coupled with thermodynamic analysis. From the experimental observations and interfacial energy calculations for multilayered films, it is demonstrated that the rapid increase of interfacial free energy of the nanocrystalline phases with increasing ARB cycles appears to be a determining role in enhancing amorphization process. The local spatial distributions of the nanocrystalline and amorphous phases are seen under TEM to be non-uniform, varying significantly in size and quantity in different regions. The diffraction spots and rings in the TEM diffraction patterns are still originated from the pure elements, meaning that the nanocrystalline phases are those unmixed hard particles left from the previous severe deformation and diffusion processes. A critical size of the nanocrystalline phases around 3 nm is consistently observed in all binary, ternary, and pentanary Zr-X based alloys, below the critical size a sudden transformation from the nanocrystalline to amorphous state would occur. Finally, the hardness and Young¡¦s modulus of the nanocrystalline and amorphous materials are estimated based on the microhardness results. On the other hand, a pentanary alloy (according to the composition of the synthesized ARB specimens) is also made by the arc melting method for comparison. The sharp peaks are still observed in XRD pattern of the as-melted alloys. Hence, the melt spinning method is followed. A nearly completely amorphous state is obtained in the melt spun alloy. The hardness readings of the prepared alloys are all significantly higher than those typically for metallic alloys. Moreover, the resulting Zr based amorphous alloys made by ARB possess glass transition and crystallization temperatures similar to those processed by melt spinning or drop casting.

Accumulative roll bonding of multilayered aluminium alloys

Al-Buhamad, Oday Hatim, Materials Science & Engineering, Faculty of Science, UNSW January 2009 (has links)
Multilayered aluminium alloy composites were produced by accumulative roll bonding (ARB) to very high strain to generate sheet materials consisting of either 32 or 64 alternating layers of Al and Al-0.3w.%Sc alloy. Based on the starting heat treatment condition of the Al(Sc) alloy and the roll bonding temperature, several different Al/Al(Sc) combinations were produced: (i) SSSS-ARB (Al(Sc) in the supersaturated condition; Tdef = 200 ???C; 32 layers); (ii) Aged-ARB (Al(Sc) in the artificially aged condition; Tdef = 200 ???C; 32 layers), and (iii) SSSS-ARB-HT (Al(Sc) in the SSSS condition; Tdef = 350 ???C; 64 layers). Regardless of the roll bonding conditions, Al(Sc) in the form of a dispersion of ultrafine Al3Sc particles strongly impedes structural changes during thermomechanical processing whereas Al readily undergoes extensive dynamic and static restoration. The major aim of the thesis is to understand the effect of initial microstructure and processing conditions on microstructural development in these multilayered Al/Al(Sc) composites. The microstructures were investigated mainly by backscatter electron (BSE) and ion channeling contrast (ICC) imaging in the DualBeam Platform and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) whereas the crystallographic nature of the microstructures were investigated by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and the various diffraction techniques available in the TEM. The mechanical properties of the materials were investigated by hardness and tensile testing. The deformation microstructure and texture of these two alloy combinations were strongly influenced by both the initial heat treatment condition of the Al(Sc) alloy whereby large-scale shear bands are generated during rolling when a dispersion of fine Al3Sc particles is present in the Al(Sc) layers. The deformation mechanism of both SSSS-ARB and Aged-ARB was strongly controlled by the relative hardening behaviour of adjacent layers. In Aged-ARB, a higher magnitude of in-plane shear stress, exceeding the flow stress of Al(Sc), was operative at the interfaces between layers; this was shown to cause the shear banding in this material. All materials were annealed for up to 6h at 350 ??C. This extended annealing generated alternating layers of coarse grains (Al layers) and a recovered substructure (Al(Sc) layers) with the substantial waviness of the layers in both Aged-ARB and SSSS-ARB-HT being inherited from the as-deformed material. While the Al(Sc) layers remain unrecrystallized in all materials due to particle pinning effects, the Al layers underwent continuous and discontinuous recrystallization after low and high temperature roll bonding, respectively. Shear banding in Aged-ARB also resulted in a reduction in intensity of the rolling texture components and had a randomizing effect on the recrystallization texture of the Al layers. The Al/A(Sc) multilayered composites were found to conform to the classic inverse strength/ductility relationship and no significant improvement in ductility (for a given strength) was evident. The barriers to achieving an excellent combination of ductility and strength (i.e. toughness) in these materials were identified to be delamination of the layers, which can be largely reduced (or eliminated) by careful control of starting materials (heat treatment condition and thickness) as well as the processing parameters during ARB.

Arbitráž a mediace v mezinárodních obchodních sporech / Arbitration and mediation in international commercial disputes

Hanajová, Tereza January 2018 (has links)
Arbitration and mediation belong to the popular methods used for the international commercial disputes. In the diploma thesis, the author mainly describes the combinations of the processes, focusing on the med-arb with one neutral. Med-arb is considered by the academics to be a controversial method. Since the topic is examined in the context of international commercial disputes, the author analyses not only the Czech law but also foreign jurisdiction and rules of the international organisations. She also refers to recently published researches, such as the International Arbitration Survey 2018 safeguarded by Queen Mary University or the reports of the Herbert Smith Freehills, Pricewaterhouse Coopers and International Mediation Institute. In the first chapters of the thesis, the author describes the individual ADR methods and their combination. The second and third chapter focuses on positives and negatives connected with the method. The effectivity of the process, flexibility, possible loss of impartiality of med- arbiter and conflict of interest are discussed. Following this information, the author presents in the fourth chapter how to work with med-arb in order to eliminate the negative aspects. She gives the attention to the demands on the mediator and arbitrator which the med-arbitrator has to...

Ger tillägg av ARB till redan pågående behandling med ACE-hämmare hos hjärtsviktspatienter bättre hälso- och kostnadseffekt?

Boletini, Faik January 2014 (has links)
Heart failure is a condition where the heart is incapable of providing adequate blood supply to different organs in the body. The underlying causes of heart failure is some kind of disorder in the heart function, and require careful diagnostics. The basic symptoms that arise from heart failure is difficulty in breathing, that aggravate when lying down, and fatigue. The patients’ symptoms and impaired quality of life can be in different stages depending on the severity of the heart failure. Heart failure is a present widespread disease with numerical superiority which is more likely to affect elderly patients. Heart failure is a very expensive condition and causes enormous costs for the society. The basic treatment of heart failure consists of ACE-inhibitors in combination with beta blockers and with additional diuretics. If intolerance occurs with ACE-inhibitors, often in the form of dry cough, then treatment with angiotensin receptor inhibitors (ARB) will be used instead. The aim of the study was to find out if additional treatment with ARB in patients diagnosed with heart failure and receiving basic treatment with ACE-inhibitors lead to better health or had any economic advantage. The method used consists of literature search studies in the Pubmed database. The search gave a total of 103 articles of which six were chosen. The criteria for inclusion was that it should be clinical trials which were not older than 14 years and that the studies should be based on humans. Two of the six studies that were chosen were health economic studies. The studies were randomized, double blind, placebo controlled and included a large number of patients. The results from the studies showed that there were no significant improvements on mortality or morbidity, when additional treatment with ARB was given to heart failure patients already receiving treatment with ACE-inhibitors. A decrease in hospital admission was seen, but at the same time there were more adverse events arising that lead to discontinuation of study treatment. The economic studies showed a higher medical service cost when treatment with ARB was added and the reason for this were that ARB drugs were more expensive than ACE-inhibitors. It is concluded that the additional treatment with ARB in patients diagnosed with heart failure and already receiving treatment with ACE-inhibitors had no favorable effect neither from a health perspective or an economic perspective. However, health economic studies that are made from a society point of view are required to be able to draw definite conclusions regarding the economic part.

Persistence of Culturable Antibiotic Resistant Fecal Coliforms From Manure Amended Vegetable Fields

Wind, Lauren Lee 14 June 2017 (has links)
The reduced efficacy of antibiotics in treating common infections is one of the most pressing health concerns of the 21st Century. Increasing evidence links the widespread use of antibiotics in livestock production to the transfer of bacteria carrying antibiotic resistance genes to the broader environment. It is therefore critical to understand the persistence and dissemination of resistance in agricultural soils to understand potential threats to consumers. The goal of this large-scale agricultural field experiment was to identify the effects of crop (lettuce, radish) and fertilizer type (inorganic, compost, raw manure) on the incidence and persistence of antibiotic-resistant fecal coliforms, a common family of fecal indicator bacteria used to track the environmental spread of antibiotic resistance. Soil samples were collected eight times over a 120-day period and analyzed for fecal coliforms utlizing a suite of MacConkey agars supplemented with different antibiotics (ceftazidime, clindamycin, erythromycin, sulfamethoxazole, and tetracycline). Given the number of samples with resistant fecal coliform concentrations below the limit of detection, analyses to identify the effects of soil treatment and crop relied on Zero-inflated Poisson Regressions. Antibiotic-resistant culturable fecal coliforms were recoverable from soils across all treatments immediately following application, though persistence throughout the experiment varied by antibiotic. Sulfamethoxazole- and tetracycline-resistant fecal coliforms were nondetectable after Day 1; this was expected, as the cattle supplying the manure amendments were not treated with these antibiotics or similar analogs. Clindamycin- and erythromycin-resistant fecal coliforms were nondetectable after 42 days but rebounded on Day 90 in the soil; both of these drugs were of the same antibiotic class as the ones used to treat the dairy cattle during the manure collection period. Ceftazidime-resistant fecal coliform levels were consistently high throughout the duration of the growing season. No statistical differences were observed between root and aboveground crops. Results suggest that soils amended with raw or composted dairy manure are at risk of contamination with antibiotic resistant fecal coliforms; however, composting decreased the antibiotic resistant fecal coliform levels of the macrolide (erythromycin) and lincosamide (clindamycin) antibiotic classes administered to the dairy cattle (cephapirin and pirlimycin). / Master of Science / The reduced efficacy of antibiotics in treating common infections is one of the most pressing health concerns of the 21st Century. Over the course of 120 days, samples were collected from field plots to identify if there were antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARBs) in the soil. This study was partially motivated as a means to evaluate the Federal Drug Administration’s Food Modernization Safety Act updated manure treatment guidelines in decreasing potential pathogenic bacteria in soils used to grow vegetables for human consumption. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria were recoverable from soils across all fertilizer types immediately following application, though persistence throughout the experiment varied by antibiotic tested. From the above findings, compost amended soils had greater quantities of total and ceftazidime-resistant bacteria. However, composting did show a significant decrease in the antibiotic-resistant bacteria levels found in the same antibiotic classes, macrolides and lancosimides, that the dairy cattle were treated with at the beginning of this study.

Reservoirs of antibiotic resistance and pathogens in bacterial communities of anthropogenically - driven environments

Caucci, Serena 23 October 2018 (has links)
The increase of antibiotic resistance against antibiotics (AB) is an alarming phenomenon threatening the human well being and heading back to the pre-antibiotic era where many infectious diseases may become again untreatable with antibiotics. There is a strong correlation between AB use and occurrence of resistances which suggests anthropogenically-driven environments as reservoirs of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB). Among anthropogenically - driven environments, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), have been linked with the increased incidence of pathogens and ARB in freshwater ecosystems. Principal goal of the study was to evaluate the role of WWTPs as environmental reservoirs for antibiotic resistance and pathogenic bacteria. In this thesis, classical and molecular microbiology methods were applied to analyse resistance levels of bacterial communities from wastewater and wastewater-polluted environments at different geographical locations of developed (German and Switzerland) and developing (Nigeria) countries. Additionally, a novel approach which makes use of a combination of quantitative genomics, Next Generation Sequencing and drug-related health data was applied to quantitatively detect antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) in wastewater and assess their seasonal dynamics. The relative abundance of ARG was not reduced by the WWTPs in the treated effluent. Effluents were responsible for significantly high levels of ARB and ARG in the receiving environment because capable of introducing and/or selecting ARB carrying ARG on genetic mobile elements. The ARG levels differed between seasons independently from the water sanitation. High ARG levels were displayed in autumn and winter in coincidence with the higher uptake of antibiotics by the outpatients of the municipality.Contrary to the ARG, the abundance of bacteria was reduced by WWTPs processes in the effluent of developed countries. The WWTPs were also responsible for the changes of the microbial community from the wastewater to the effluent. Contrary to developed countries, the poor treatment of wastewater in Nigeria facilitated the spread of multi-drug resistant pathogens in the freshwater ecosystem. These bacteria were also carriers of clinically relevant ARG contributing to the accumulation of multiresistant pathogens in the environment. All in all, this thesis shows that well established WWTP technologies are not capable to prevent or reduce the abundance of ARG in the freshwater ecosystem and poorly treated wastewater enriches the environmental reservoirs of ARG. Antibiotic resistance can spread across taxonomically distant bacteria and therefore explain the strong dispersal of ARG in wastewater effluents. These results show that antibiotic resistances are also ubiquitous in the freshwater environment and that anthropogenically - driven environments determine the incidence of antibiotic resistance. As for the clinic, tackling the problem of antibiotic resistance in the environment is fundamental. Without any action, the environmental reservoirs of resistance will increase and therapeutic failure in the clinic will irreversibly compromise the biggest progress in medicine of the 20th century.

Manufatura e caracterização de compósito de matriz de alumínio reforçado com partículas de carbeto de silício, obtido por laminação acumulativa / Manufacturing, characterization aluminum matrix composite reinforced with particles from silicon carbide obtained accumulative roll bonding

Pereira, Gualter Silva 24 November 2016 (has links)
The present study aims to characterize mechanical, microstructural and through fractographic inspection laminates Al-1100 aluminum matrix composite reinforced with silicon carbide particles, SiCp (40 μm), manufactured by accumulative roll bonding (ARB), as well as, for comparative effect, were studied Al-1100 processed by ARB without the addition of particles and Al-1100 received. Micro-adhesive wear test with fixed ball and test almost static unidirectional traction were performed on samples without scoring, and in samples containing different geometries notches. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy modes: secondary electrons, backscattered electrons, energy dispersive X-ray and electron backscatter diffraction, X-ray diffraction and computed microtomography, these were used to characterize the samples. The results indicated successful incorporation of SiC particles in the aluminum matrix by ARB process. There have been significant gains in maximum tensile strength, stiffness and maximum deformation at the time of rupture, due to incorporation of SiCp. These properties were strongly influenced in the presence of stress concentrators (notches). The resistance of the composite wear was exceptionally increased compared to Al-1100 ARB. All results were corroborated by microstructural and fractographics analysis.
