The relevance of contemporary bronze casting in Ubon, Thailand for understanding the archaeological record of the Bronze Age in Peninsular Southeast Asia

Everly, Daniel Eugene 12 April 2006 (has links)
A direct historical approach is used in this thesis to document the lost wax casting technique as currently practiced by indigenous metallurgists in northeastern Thailand. The smiths observed at Ban Pba Ao, Ubon Ratchathani Province are the last practicing members of a bronze working tradition that has been in continuous operation at the village for two centuries. An account of the processes used to create bronze bells is provided. Of particular significance is the fact that the yard in which casting activities are performed did not receive clean up operations following the bells production. As a result, hearths, bowl furnaces, crucibles and fragments of clay moulds are left scattered about the yard. These materials accumulating in one location would eventually create a mound of cultural debris. The discarded materials from the lost wax casting process as practiced at Ban Pba Ao provide considerable insight into what might be found in the stratigraphy of Peninsular Southeast Asian prehistoric sites that were involved in the production of bronze objects. The study concludes that attention needs to be paid to the stratigraphic sequences from which bronze artifacts are extracted, rather than relying on the artifacts to determine the type of process used in their manufacture.

A study in grey : grey literature and archaeological investigation in England 1990 to 2010

Donnelly, Victoria January 2016 (has links)
Through an examination of the processes and influences on the character of grey literature and its producers, this thesis explores the nature of archaeological investigation, how it is reported and the creation of archaeological data in England from 1990 to 2010 and the implications for future understanding of the English archaeological record. I intend to address broad research questions regarding grey literature and archaeology: What is grey literature? Who creates it and why? What is it meant for? Is it fit-for-purpose? My research objectives in studying grey literature reporting and archaeological fieldwork investigation in England are: •To explore the nature of archaeological grey literature reporting and its producers, the framework of its production and communication, and its impact on archaeological research and knowledge production; •To capture the developments and changes in English archaeological practice between 1990 and 2010 and their implications for the creation and understanding of the archaeological record; and •To consider potential future directions for archaeological fieldwork and reporting. I propose to achieve this using a combination of both quantitative and qualitative approaches including spatial analysis techniques, comparative analysis at a range of scales from England-wide to individual case study areas, and detailed analysis of the nature and actual content of grey literature reports alongside a characterisation of the many creators of grey literature reporting. This study will illustrate and explore the process of producing grey literature reporting as well as examining the end product itself - grey literature reports. This European Research Council funded DPhil research was undertaken within the context of the English Landscapes and Identities Project, which analyses change and continuity in the English Landscape from the middle Bronze Age (c.1500 BC) to the Domesday survey (c. AD 1086).

Memória do futuro: registros arqueológicos em tempo real / Memories of the future - archaeologyc records in real time

Chermann, Davi 27 March 2008 (has links)
Memory of the Future presents the archaeological record from the digital perspective. The aim is characterize some possibilities that interaction provides, especially on a possible change of archaeological´s paradigm research. The digital view added to Archaeology the possibility to study the relationship between space and human time, which allow the analysis of the present and the future. The digital is potentially an important methodological resource for the expansion of the Archaeology`s field, allowing the inclusion of new objects of study, made in the virtual environment. A Databank of Archaeological Information - in real time, on the Historic Center of the City of Sao Paulo, using as a model the Patio of the College, is presented as a simulation on the archaeological record in the digital environment. The main consideration of this work is that the archaeological record - in real time is a methodological resource important for the expansion of the Archaeological research, allowing the memory of the future.

The Bairro do Recife, throughout its existence, has undergone several transformations. The changes taken place in the local landscape constantly changed the archaeological record over the centuries, coming to cause difficulties in the interpretation obtained through its analysis. Thus, from the study of the transformations of Bairro do Recife, the final reports of archaeological research carried out in the area and pottery fragments collected during archaeological research of Habitacional do Pilar located there, we sought information about the changes that archaeological record and limitations that can bring the archaeologist.

Il caso dell'area dell'Università Cattolica / Transformation processes in Mediolanum's suburbium between the Late Republican and the middle imperial age. The case of Università Cattolica's area.

CORTESE, CLAUDIO 05 May 2006 (has links)
In the area today occupied by the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano, since 1986, rescue excavations have disclosed a part of Mediolanum’s western suburbium, and in particular an imperial age suburban settlement. A wide area of this settlement has been the object of this research which, combining the study of the formation processes of the archaeological record and the quantitative and statistical analysis of finds assemblages, allowed us to reconstruct the transformations which preceded its formation and those which concerned its spatial organization and activity areas distribution. In this way we have shown that the characteristics and nature of the settlement have considerably changed during the course of time, and these changes seem to shed light even on the general transformations which concern the entire suburbium of the Roman town.
